    What ever happened with all of this?
    Update: The dbrand vs. Casetify lawsuit, filed in late 2023 over alleged copying of dbrand's "Teardown" designs, is an ongoing legal battle with recent court filings from early 2024 indicating discovery and scheduling phases, with Casetify denying plagiarism and pointing to brand partners, while dbrand seeks substantial damages. Casetify removed the disputed products but claims originality and has filed a counterclaim, setting the stage for court proceedings to determine intellectual property infringement.

    Map makers used to call this a trap street. They would add an imaginary street into their maps and if the map was copied illegally, they would have copied the trap street as well. Similar to the signature easter eggs you included in your designs. Great work!

      When Google Maps used to rely on TeleAtlas data, they got hit by this (TeleAtlas, and therefore, Google); several map companies had their data illegally copied by TA and then used by Google. Google always took action when notified, but still...

      This is part of the reason why I love inside jokes and easter eggs in products. It's also a fingerprint. I know in the auto industry there's a growing trend to add them to windshields and official parts so that way owners can also spot aftermarket replacement parts.

  • @BensLight

    Fun fact: this is how map makers figure out who’s just copying their maps vs making their own. They usually add fake towns as their own little easter eggs and if they find those towns on someone else’s map it means they copied theirs.

    • @dddrrr7139
      @dddrrr7139 2 years ago

      incorrect, its a form of watermark. the function of a fake town and a watermark is to determine if something has been stolen. it is absolutely related to watermarks, one could easily argue directly and indirectly. @dymetex6360

    I doubt this will ever even make it to trial. There's just too much evidence against them. Odds are they'll want to settle or the judge will just call it. When that happens, you should take a scan of the summary judgment and make a phone skin out of it.

    What you've done with those easter eggs is actually an extremely old form of copyright protection. Map makers used to intentionally do the same thing in their maps to stop rival map makers from copying them and could take them to court and point out those same easter eggs. Kinda cool! It theoretically SHOULD still work in your own defense I think..

    • @josephhenderson2538
      @josephhenderson2538 2 years ago +31

      Programmers will do the same thing with their code, too. Companies will sometimes ask for a demo of a program and copy it to avoid paying the programmer, so including an Easter egg like that is a great way to win a lawsuit.

    • @Gulyus
      @Gulyus 2 years ago +82

      This is actually something older than you expect. Maps used to do it add an extra town here and there that doesn't exist) so anyone that copies would tell on themselves. Phone Books also did the same - adding people and numbers that don't exist - for much the same reason.

    I had a clothing logo and designs stolen by an international clothing company which i had trade marked officially at the IPO . Unfortunately the legal costs always put the larger business at a massive advantage. As a small producer, I was unable to afford the legal costs to fight even though I had a high chance of winning. Even then, just trying to be amicable and get an acknowledgement or credit for the design, I was ignored. I’m 100% behind you Jerry, do it for the small guys.

      Wrong, JerryRig and Dbrand own the rights to "their exact image" that they created. If you take a pic with your phone it's not the same image. Just an image of the same product. He literally explained and showed how they are exact copies, just of terrible quality.

      I've seen a lot of ads for anime specific "inspired" cases that are just stolen designs from actual artists.

      @OneSlowCbrthey have been sued multiple times for copying the shape and texture of the products they skin.
      A prime example was the PS5 darkplates dbrand sold. Sony sued them for the triangle, square, circle, and X texture embedded in the darkplates.

    • @exapsy

      @nathanielhill8156 upvoted, but i mean it's different copying the iconic rectangles, circles and triangles of sony which have been known for 2 decades and sony being a multibillion dollar company at this point (?) and different copying from Jerry and DBrant inside jokes and easter eggs and the design and work they've put themselves for many days or months.

      @eidodk 2 years ago +17

      Only in dystopian hellscapes where people have to pay for them, themselves. A functioning social safety net and a medical system will take care of that cost for you. I hear my "american" readers all chime in: "But i don't want to pay for someone elses health care"... Imagine what purchasing health insurance does.. It sure doesn't cover your health care for as long as you have to suffer heavy copays... What it actually does, is PAY FOR SOMEONE ELSES HEALTH CARE..

    • @corbinbrier0
      @corbinbrier0 2 years ago +14

      @eidodk Agreed! It's disgusting. I know a person in my group who is actually paralyzed from the waist down but insurance won't cover a chair. This should never happen. America is hell for those of us who are poor, disabled, etc.

    • @StephenFasciani
      @StephenFasciani 2 years ago

      @eidodk Yeah. Health insurance is done incorrectly here, you're completely correct. But I also don't want to pay for anyone else's healthcare. The problem is healthcare was cheaper, it was more affordable. But once the government got involved HOSPITALS started charging A SHITTONNE to make double the profit. Before Obamacare, the only thing that was tough to get was surgery. But at least you weren't taking out what student loans are for that.

    • @eidodk
      @eidodk 2 years ago +4

      @StephenFasciani You're part of the problem though. The notion of "not wanting to pay for someone elses healthcare" is exactly what's wrong with the US. That's the quintessential idea of what taxes are for - SERVICES RENDERED TO THE PEOPLE PAID FOR BY THE PEOPLE. The US is such a fearful place, you spend the taxes on the millitary instead.
      The best evidence for it being a fearful place, is that homeowners thinks they need guns to protect themselves - That is ONLY an issue in places where the country is at war with itself.
      The problem was NEVER the hospitals, it was the insurance companies. The "free competition" between insurance companies is what has created the hellscape. It's now an insurance INDUSTRY, with billions and other billions of revenue for stock holders. A state controlled health industry would be a zero sum industry, in which the ONLY thing that is necessary, is to balance the budgets. If $10 goes out, $10 has to go in.
      Until your country starts thinking more like a group, than a country of individuals, it will only get worse.

    • @eidodk
      @eidodk 2 years ago

      @sys-administratorAnd that is exactly wrong. You call the WMO Helpdesk, and put in an application. Sure - you'll not get a free pick on all shelves of wheelchairs, but if you can show a specific need for a specific model, it would likely be provided for you.

    I love the part where he said "It's rigging time" and rigged all over Castify

    I don’t know how you always stay so calm no matter what.
    Kudos to you and best of luck.

      Because raising your voice and throwing insults, curses and swearing gets nowhere.
      JRE has millions of subscribers and with plenty of evidence. What's shown in this video is more than enough to be presented to court to sue their bottoms off.
      Casetify is in big doo doo this time.

      @caniceso
      Its a Hong Kong company with quite the operation in LA which sort of make them like a HK-US company.
      This is just Capitalism at its finest, stealing and profiting, like they always do and has done for 300 years.

      They’re preparing for the lawsuit with damage control. They will still lose much money when they lose the lawsuit. Over 117 designs were stolen, so I doubt they removed them all

      So you are saying that they are fine, can’t sue a Chinese company.
      Should have protected Hong Kong 😢

      @RusticRonnie They can have all of their imports blocked and have assets seized. The company will either settle or not be able to do business in the US until they resolve the matter in court.

    "It's not about the money, it's about sending a message."
    I hope your lawsuit goes smoothly. It's actually insane how lazy the competition was with their theft haha.

    Someone steals from him and he wants to use the damages to help others. A truly wonderful person.
