There are so many options! Dreaming of JLC rendez-vous moon phase 34mm diamond bezel & datejust 31 rose two tone white dial fluted bezel but then it seems too flashy for everyday? Maybe a JLC ultra thin 36mm (new size) is less noticeable to jealous eyes👀

I totally agree with your apperceation of the He relief valve on the Omega 300m Pro. I was a Saturation diver and yes I used the He relief valve while living through decompression. on the way up in the dry decompression chamber you open the He relief to let out any ingress of Helium. But when you want to shower etheir leave your Omega 300 pro on your bunk or close the He valve before you take your watch into the shower. I f you have the Rolex Seadweller the He relief valve is automatic so you don't have to do anything the watch will bleed out Helium automaticly. But the Omega is cheaper and in my opinion looks better but that is my opinion.

I have a fascination with Spring Drive too. I’ve yet to jump into that field due to lack of funds but, have also found myself becoming interested in other ‘Electric Hybrid’ movements as in a Ralf Tech Watch I recently bought where the Quartz movement is wound by a rotor lasting up to 100,000 hours! No battery required just like Spring Drive.
I’m also with you on the 1k to 4k price bracket. There is SO much on offer in that range which is well designed and good quality.
A personal ‘like’ that has been resurrected with myself has been BIG Watches. Out of favour at present I know and having bought a 36mm Datejust in January I am currently loving Watches up to 47.5mm. Whether it’s my aging eyesight (lol) or just the ease of legibility at a glance, I think it’s probably the latter.
Always love my Saturday binge of your channel Mike. Cheers ✊

Yes, spot on with the boxes, no need for huge boxes to take up precious space. I have the impression that 5hz watches wear out faster/ easily than 4hz movement (fact check me). If so, the amount of "hz" will affect maintenance costs. For example, high-beat GS need to be sent to Japan factory for servicing whilst the 4hz movements can be done locally, at least from where (i live in Singapore). Image buying a $5k+ GS spring-drive watch only to realize later that the servicing will costs at least $500+ (more than 10% of the costs of the watch). definitely, something to note before purchase.

I totally agree with your comment on date windows. Very often they are not visually pleasing, a hassle to set and in a world where everybody needs a smartphone, whether they want one or not, almost completely useless. The moon phase is also not very useful but pretty, an absolut win. I also think that straps are totally underrated. A strap can make or break a watch, whether you want an expensive watch to fly under the radar with a safe, but inexpensive looking strap or dress up a mid-tier watch with a high-end strap. The right strap can create magic!

    Two-tone for the win!
I have been using all black G-Shock watches and other watches in silver for decades, but for my every day watch I picked up a two-toned watch a while ago, and I hardly ever use other watches now - that's how much I enjoy using it. That being said, my gold colored Casio A1000 does see sunlight quite often. Even as a pale Scandinavian, I enjoy wearing an all gold toned watch sometimes - and it doesn't hurt, that the bracelet is a Milanese type bracelet, as it's my favorite type of watch bracelet.

Just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy your channel. I've watched a decent amount of watch content on RUclips, but only discovered you recently. I wish I had a lot sooner. I enjoy your more analytical approach to watches, as well as your 'wear what you like' attitude. I have really cheap watches that have crappy movements/power reserve that I just like the look of.
I also enjoy two-tone watches more than anything, except a NATO strap. I bought my first one a few months ago, and much like ceramic bezel inserts, it can totally change the look of a watch. I can't recommend it enough to other people to try one. They are so comfortable (6" wrist for reference), and can add that extra flair turning a watch from something more dressy into something more casual.
PLEASE keep making more content, love every video you've made, and every one has something new to bring to the table. Cheers!!

I have two that I am a sucker for:
    1. METAS level accuracy - this comes from a practical stand point: METAS deviates less than 5 seconds and only on the gaining side which implies that on a two week vacation, it would not gain more than a minute and in a month, not more than two. Therefore, I just need to set the watch once if it is my daily, which is especially true on a vacation, wherein I don’t carry multiple watches. Also being early >>> than being late especially when I am running for a train and pulling my phone out of the pocket takes some seconds and ticks me slightly.
    2. CERAMIC bezels: they are just so beautiful and keep their lustre and looks for at least over a decade. When I am throwing a bunch of cash on a watch, I want it to last at least a decade. I like things that have a level of quality that helps them last for a long time despite a carefree daily use. Ceramic bezels help that for sure.

I pretty much agree with everything you stated! I feel like two-tone has gone out of fashion, but I still really like it. Two of my favorite pieces are two-tone: an inexpensive Q&Q from the 90s with a beautiful moonphase complication, and a 1988 Omega Polaris with grade 5 titanium and 18k gold inlay. Both are very classic but also have something different about them.

Finally, someone who gets the helium escape valve on the Omega SMP300! It's totally useless, even for a normal diver, the only people who would need it are saturation divers. And they're are very few of them. Like in the hundreds. But that valve turns the SMP from just another dice watch to having it's own unique look that helps it stand out. I'll take a white dial SMP over a Submariner any day.

What I like: When they make the watch thin!
The Black Bay54 & IWC Mark XX for example. More options for NATO straps and it feels premium. I want to feel like there’s watchmaker prowess and wearing a thick brick gives me the impression that they couldn’t engineer a better wearing experience.

  • @garypollard1821

    Another great video Mike.
    Here's my tuppence worth:
Helium escape valves are wholly pointless. In another life, a long, long time ago I worked as a commercial diver all around the World. I know for a fact that only saturation divers worked at a depth where the partial pressure of helium would make a HEV necessary, and they number a relative handful. I know that a few technical leisure divers (mixed gas) go deep, but they don't use expensive watches.
I never used a watch at work at all. Our bottom time was controlled topside.
All diver watches are about flex, not function, even amongst those of use who dive deeper than their desk.
    Kind regards

I am probably someone who will only be able to own very few watches in my life, so I am trying to ensure that I get as much information as possible such that I know I'll be satisfied with the limited purchases I can make.
One watch brand I've not heard you discuss yet is Fortis. I like the aesthetic of them, their movements look good, and they seem to be willing to take risks. Plus they operate mostly in that £1k-£5k space.
What do you think of them?
    Cheers!

The Seamaster 300 is on my radar because of it's unique design, movement, but also because of those nato straps Omega sells.

Oh,yeah, that Omega Seamaster edition of James Bond's Specter movie is just 🤩... I'm a particularly avid titanium fan, mini-flashlights, keychains, pens, and Watches. I even love those AliExpress mod-kits with titanium hardware. My aspirational watch grails are the Tudor Pelagos, and that Omega Specter and I even don't mind the nobby he scape valve snorkel😂.
    Thanks for the video.

My favorite thing about the watch industry right now: micro brands. Innovating, exciting, often affordable and we are spoiled for choice.

Mike, I largely agree with you, particularly when it comes to quick-release bracelets/straps, extra straps provided when buying a watch, small boxes, Spring Drive, and especially the moonphase complication. Aesthetics and design are what I appreciate most in a watch, which is why the moonphase is my favourite complication. Of course it's completely useless, but the beauty and romance of it just makes me smile. At least when it's well done.
I've been collecting since the 1990s and own more than 300 watches (largely inexpensive vintage pieces), so watch rolls are not a realistic way for me to store my watches. Up until a few years ago I was using watch display boxes that hold 24 pieces at a time, but even that eventually proved unworkable. So I went looking for alternative storage methods and found fairly inexpensive stackable cabinets, each with 5 drawers, each drawer of which can store up to 27 watches. That saved me a TON of space, allowed me to have everything in one place and helped me avoid having to move boxes around all the time just to find the watch I want. Of course watch boxes (the branded ones you get when you buy watches) are still a pain in the ass, and I store those in large Rubbermaid-style storage bins. Fortunately I have the space in my house to get away with it.
The main thing I disagree with you on is large, visible helium escape valves. In my view the Seamaster Professional is a better watch than the Submariner, but I think the Sub looks better, largely because it's not encumbered by that valve. But it's all subjective, of course. Cheers!

Never had the bucks for Rolex or Omega but have splurged for watches from movies like the Khaki Pilot in Interstellar and the SKX009 seen in All Is Lost. Like some homages with Seiko movements from San Martin, Cronos and Heimdallr, especially in dial colors different from the watches they resemble. Latest one coming tomorrow is a Thorn 39mm titanium diver with tooless removable links. Really enjoy your down to earth talks on horology.

Oris: 10-year warranty on their in-house movements; quick-release bracelets and straps on many of their references; includes a second strap or bracelet with some of their references; small, sustainable boxes that can be laid flat, made with recycled materials (and zero plastic); some references with two-tone (bronze and steel); plenty of watches under $4k.
