I work with titanium, it has less sound dampening properties than steel. This is why you can hear the movement.

I did get the Alinghi almost a year ago.
The wait for the original FXD Titanium was long, and when they announced Carbon Composite, I made a decision to get one.
I already have a Pelagos 39, and that stays on the bracelet.
I like the Alinghi blue dial. I have other black dial, black bezel watches. Months after getting the Alinghi, my dealer did call me when the Titanium black arrived, but I’m perfectly happy with the Alinghi.
Reviewers went bonkers over the rehaut inscription, but when I saw it in person, it’s barely distinguishable from the seconds.
The Carbon seems as scratch proof as anything I’ve experienced. 11 months, and I can’t find a scratch on it, and I’m not very kind to this watch.
No matter what I wear, when I get home, the FXD goes on my wrist. Comfortable. Durable.

So true about the rehaut, we're over exposed to beautiful macro shots of every watch release over and over on YT, you have to see any watch your interested in in person to really make your mind up.

I have an Explorer 2. I think it’s the most GenX watch, 1971 original (I’m 1972 born). Quirky and different and understated (esp, the black dials, white dials feel more modern). SMP, esp Brosnan quartz, is a contender as well. Interesting both princes UK wear those two watches.

I have an MN21 that I have beat around for years now. It's the best mechanical tool watch ever made. For perspective, I also have a White Gold Submariner but the Tudor is simply functionally better. The legibility on this watch is so good that it actually surpasses the functionality of a digital display because the time can be read at all angles at a glance. I'm not sure I've ever see another mechanical watch where the dial is so close to the crystal.
I have a countdown timer, while yours is a traditional dive bezel but regardless it's a crisp and easy to use functional timer. The bezel is very sharp and grippy, so if you ever do use it in water or with gloves (diving) it's a dream. The lume is phenomenal. It is very long lasting and you can actually read it in the middle of the night. The titanium makes it light and it's certainly durable, although it will scratch up. The movement has been great for me. Very accurate and no issues.
It's a lifetime piece for me. I don't have a big collection: White Gold Sub (Cookie Monster), OP Celebration, IWC Ingy Aqua, FXD, and G-Shock 5600 but this watch firmly sits as my beater, and what a handsome beater it is. I'd only really recommend the watch to people who want to really use it though. I think there are better options for a versatile diver. I recently got to try the new BB41 Monochrome and it is spectacular. I highly recommend that for those looking for a more versatile option.

Excellent stuff! Love the way you talked about your decision making process. So one of my grail for a over year has been the Tudor FXD Alinghi Red Bull Chronograph - I absolutely love the colour scheme, the FXD aspect, the ruggedness, the size (43.5mm), the functionality and the lume. But never saw one in person as I live in New Zealand. I was in Japan recently and finally got to see one in person and it was an incredibly good price. I walked away from it, told my wife and she told me that I should have grabbed it. Well upon my return to NZ I bought it online! Fantastic - apart from the strap which although being beautiful, is just too small! So it's a strap monster and gets a lot of wrist time. Footnote: - I do hit the water a lot (particularly underwater) - although I'm more likely to use my SteelDive GMT Master as it's way cheaper - my adventures can sometimes a little rough on watches - rock, crawling along stony river or sea bottoms underwater etc) but the fact that it CAN go underwater If I need to is reassuring. Also: The Red Bull branding is very subtle and you'd have to go looking for it, so it's not a problem for me.

I have moved on from the FXD MN to the OG blue Pelagos mostly due to the bracelet and I like the brighter blue.
The FXD's hands are very close to the crystal making for a much better read angle when underwater. The MN had a bi-directional bezel and since I use the bezel to time things every day I will always miss this feature on all my other divers. Something I couldn't have known without handling and FXD prior to buying (I'm in a small town with no ADs) is with my failing eyes the fully graduated bezel made it difficult if not impossible for me to clearly see zero at a glance.
I may have waited for a blue 39 but above all I love the matte ceramic bezel of the OG and FXD, really as you stated the the lack of any polish anywhere on the Pelagos is key.

I absolutely love my black FXD - super legible, massively durable, is trim thickness wise, sits great on the wrist, is lightweight titanium, a lume beast, very accurate and by changing the strap I can go from subtle to eye popping - I wear it most often on elastic single pass CNS Paratrooper straps or an Octopod system strap - I spend a lot of time in rural Latin America for work, it has become my "go to" over the past year. It works as a field watch with skin diver properties and if I stick with tamer straps it totally flies under the radar which is why I prefer the black over the blue, and imo is the best true tool in my collection - no, it is not for everyone, definitely not ideal for the one-watch person, there is no way to dress it up and if you hate "nato" style straps, it is pretty much a no go, but for my use case it is fantastic. Nice to see this watch starting to get some love from reviewers like yourself and a few others. Always appreciated the BB, but imo the Pelagos line is Tudor at its best - a true modern and unique redesign of the quintessential tool watch. I have been a Pelagos devotee for years, actually my LHD was my "work watch", but the FXD has stolen its glory. One last thing I would add: do not dismiss this watch based on it dimensions or the initial impression takes of most reviewers, imo you really need to try this watch for yourself to understand it. You will notice that the people that actually own and use it are often as effusive with their love for this watch like myself. Once again, love the content Mike!

I had the Pelagos 39, and still have the Sinn U50 (THE best tool watch!). I get the love for your version, thankfully does not have a Titanium bracelet, which was very noticeably bad on the 39.
BUT as a designer, look at the 10 on the bezel... OMG, for me it's once seen, never unseen, yes other bezels do this, (the 39mm doesn't show the 10) but since the other numbers only have 3 places around each number why put 4 each side of the 10. Type hell...
But glad you got it and love it, enjoy!

I am an owner of the FXD Marine Nationale. It's the watch that has received the most wrist time in the last one and a half years. I especially appreciate the lume. The best advice I can share is buy what you can afford and enjoy wearing, and you will never go wrong -- even as your tastes will change. This watch has a great toolish functionality and simplicity about it that I really like. The old citizen promaster model also has the vertical play in the beezle, from what I've gathered is it made to be loaded outwards in this way with the slight space so it will continue to function, even if there is a build-up of salt or debres that can get in while diving.

Hope you had a nice holiday. My holiday watch is a Sinn EZM 3. I put some fat bars without shoulders in it that I have to cut out, but I don't need to, because I love to wear it with Natos (especially at sea and the risk of breaking a spring bar). Very similar to the Tudor with its sand blasted case and black dial with only a little bit of glossy red (that I love!). Slim case (12,4mm) despite soft iron cage and a decent 47 mm L2L. And at around 2k€ you can even wear it light hearted when using power tools or working on the car/motorcycle. Might be an alternative when you're done with the Tudor.

Another consideration is security against having a watch snapped off your wrist. A bracelet is held together by a bucket full of little pins any of which can fail. A proper milspec NATO strap only weak point is the buckle pin (a genuine NATO strap is welded not sewn and has no springbars) as opposed to the around 18 pins on my Citizen bracelet.

It's light, not too boring and wears great in summer heat on a beige Perlon strap (which by the way you can get now with matte finishing!). And even though its radio control is Japan only, it works with iPhone app which simulates the signal perefectly :)

Now that is a nice acquisition Mike! It would have been very hard for me to pick between the Sinn or this but I think you have a stunning dive watch now! This really is a strap monster indeed! Perhaps the sound is due to the density of the material. Titanium grade 5 comes in at 4.43 g/cc where 316L SS is 8.0 g/cc. Just dont wear that around Jozi. You WILL get robbed depending on where you go. Even Sandton isnt safe these days. Take care man and have a great weekend!

I just bought the FXD Alinghi version and yes I was concerned with the Red Bull text but it completely disappears and is subtle enough to be almost imperceptible. Great watch, super lightweight, tough and under the radar.

Been wearing the black fxd in Dubrovnik all week - prefer it to my seamaster etc - so easy to operate will slippy sun cream hands and suits every outfit. Easy to adjust strap too

I have the same process for expensive watches. I print out the photo of the watch and put the price on it. Then I wait and see if I still like it while I build up the funds. I waited 5 years before pulling the trigger on the GMT Master 2. Boy it does not disappoint and I knew it wasn't an impulse purchase. Next up is the FXD for me as well! Try out the WOE Glomar Explorer strap on the FXD!

Congratulations for the purchase (both brains and heart involved :) and thank you for sharing. It’s the only Tudor watch I really like in the current line. Currently scratching my head for my summer watches (yes plural I take 3) in Italy soon. For sure my Seiko SLA069 (Uemura diver with the Mont Blanc, stunning white dial), and then probably the « manga » G-Shock (so fun for $100) but the battle is epic for the third slot, the « special occasion » one. Submariner is classy but common. My two tone Daytona maybe a bit too much. A Swiss Integrated bracelet? Or a stylish microbrand (just got this meteorite Nivada G and eyeing Serica)? Or a vintage chrono (old Tudor big block, old Heuer carrera, 80s Seiko quartz)? Nice problems to have :)

You ask what I'm wearing? Had a Zelos MOP Blacktip I bought in January (was going to sell it, but finally decided to keep and wear it after seeing that the bezel actually did move)......it has gotten some wrist time. Also been wearing a CW C65 Dartmouth that just came in(CW's answer to Omega's Seamaster Heritage minus the 3,6,9,12 on the dial). Enjoy the Tudor‐-glad it's your cup o' tea , 'coz it's not mine!

I'm not much of a Tudor fan since I'm not much of a Rolex fan, but I think the Pelagos is their best, and I've also considered getting the blue FXD. Maybe a BB 925, but since they're roughly the same price, the Pelagos FXD is much more compelling. But a Seamaster can be had for pretty close to that, so...

Interesting to see and hear about the bezel flex when you push it down at the edges. I bought the new BB41 monochrome 4 weeks ago and noticed the exact same flex in its bezel. Thought it was a fault but looks like it's a feature of how the watch is built, as with the FXD's. Great vid as always and enjoy your new purchase

I own several Tudors but by the time this one appeared for sale I noticed that looked at with a squint they all look very similar, and all the same without my specs. . My favourite of the bunch is the "Lefty" Pelagos. Much as I like the new monochrome 41 I won't be buying any more Tudors until they come up with a new idea.

Congratulations for the purchase and the rigorous selection process.
The "wobbly" bezel should ease removing salt and sand that can stick between bezel and case. At least, that's an explanation I heard a couple of times. I have the same feature on my Citizen NY0040 (ISO certified diver)

I’m the same way when it comes to my shopping experience. I don’t impulse buy. I go in a few times, think about it, and determine if it’s a value proposition for my wants. By the way, I got a Sinn U1 through this process.

I wonder. I mean congratulations, enjoy it. I love a titanium watch, and this is super clean for a Tudor.
However, on the Dutch watch forum, the second hand topic is awash with many, many Tudor dive watches that get bought, introduced with aplomb and gusto, and flogged again a month or maybe two later. Those watches that seem to be stickier seem to be the oddities. The P01, the North Flag, the Tudor 925, etc. etc. It will be interesting to see how it fares in the long term.
By the way, you missed the Seiko SPB317. Black, slightly darker case, not quite gunmetal, and a super clean white printed dial.

Just a theory (no data to support it) but I think Tudor is so popular that a lot of people jump on the bandwagon and potentially end up being disappointed once the hype dies off 😀😀

Mike, Im interested to know about your one in, one out watch policy, is due to reaching a particular number of watches, or overall value of your collection? 47,000 subs, you'll be hitting 100,000+ by the time 2024 is out. I considered the Pelagos FXD but wrote it off because it’s probably big on my 6.5. I never considered it as a summer watch candidate. I also sold my spb143 because the movement in mine was garbage. I replaced it with a Seiko SJE101 and never looked back. It’s the reason why I don’t lust after every new diver anymore. Also makes for a great summer watch.
