How to: Repair Nissan GTR instrument cluster where LEDs have failed
It is a common failure point with these cars that the backlight illumination for the instrument cluster stops working over time. You may see one or more of the gauges being dark or dim where the lighting has failed. Seen more often in the older cars, the issue will first start manifesting itself as one or two of the right hand side gauges loose illumination, then over time the problem moves across to the left. This affects the water temperature gauge, fuel gauge, shift indicator display, speedometer and tachometer.
In this video I show you how to disassemble the instrument cluster, and replace the backlight LEDs.

Ferguson 3T18 boombox repair

This is a repair video to fix a fault on a Ferguson 3T18 boombox from 1982. The fault is that the cassette tape deck is not working. The spindles, capstan and pinch roller are not turning. Usual problem with these old 1980's decks is the rubber belt(s) need replacing. This one has a different problem, but after seeing the damage, I would expect this is also an issue that you are likely to see. ...

    Loved the video! There are a few nuances there. At 16 minutes on the lid of the inner part you can see two microswitches. One of them, which is responsible for automatically recognizing the type of tape Metal is just at the end and prevents the lid from closing. It is bent with a metal tab, these mechanisms are assembled in boot mode. And these gears should never be touched with a screwdriver, as the soft plastic and teeth will suffer. Alpine has a special tool, a pinion, for a small rotation to put everything back in its place. Of course, users don't have it, so you should think of something soft to turn the mechanism.

    Hi, great channel. I wonder if you might have any ideas or pointers on what to look for. I got a TC-K677ES, and on playback, I'm only getting sound from the right channel; the level meters also show no audio on the left channel and only sound from the right. It does this from the headphone and rear line out. If I record to the tape its records both channel in stereo (confirmed this by playing tape in another deck) If I press the monitor button to see the source, I do get both left and right stereo sound output from headphones and line out, and the level metre shows both channels working. Only when I go back to the tape monitor will I have one channel working. I also have hum on the rear, but I think this is because I changed the motor as it was not spinning before, and I have read that some cheap motors have a ground issue and create motor hum. That's a side issue for now. I'm just trying to figure out why, playing a tape, I only hear one channel. Thank your any advice you can give.

    • @ANTandTEC

      Could be the pre-amp IC on the board, but I've never seen a faulty one before. Likely to be a bad connection from the play/rec head to the board. Wire might have come loose from the head itself. To test, swap the left and right PLAYBACK channel wires over in the plug that comes from the head. If the sound is still only on right then likely the pre-amp IC is faulty but if the sound output now moves to the left, then it's either a faulty connection to the head, or faulty head itself.

  • @radscot
    @radscot Месяц назад

    Hi. My first change was to another of the recommended APC RBC48, then I used Yuasa NPW45-12 (as they were also noted as being 'valve regulated' and they had the 6 x 18 mm recessed weakened areas on top; by failing there, that should prevent them from bulging sideways and thus getting stuck in the battery cavity) then I used Xtreme XR-7.5 FR (and I again reused the original harness) and they lasted well; they didn't have any sign of the 6 recessed areas on top (I'd forgotten about that when ordering them, but it's a lightly loaded, I changed them when the UPS alarmed and they looked fine). With these latest one having just failed, I noted that the RBC48 is currently £137 on the Amazon APC store - ouch - but that same APC store also sells APC APCRBC113 for £61 (which also have these recesses on top), so that's what I've just fitted a few moments ago. All of the ones mentioned above had the wider terminals (including the latest APC APCRBC113, which don't come with the Smart-UPS 750 harness, but which do come pre-taped together) and I see from the date label that these latest ones are showing as being 5.5 months old, so that's still okay (I think that when sitting on the shelf, they need a charge every 6 months, so I'm within that period). Every pack I've used has lasted over 4 years, but you have to watch when you get near 5 years as though they might hold up for a light load, if you put a heavier load on them they just die immediately. As I'm lightly loading them, I don't test with a high load; I just wait until the unit shows the red LED and starts to beep (typically at 3AM) then I change them. 😀

    I didn't fancy unsoldering the solenoids to replace the smaller belt you can thread it around the switch contacts using dental hook or similar. It takes a steady hand and lots and lots of patience though.

    I found a really easy way to remove the Rubber "gloop" is to use "Elbow Grease" Degreaser on a cue tip and follow that with alcohol,

    What a great design. So much better than this cheap touchscreen crap. Yeah, touchscreen was cool once, it was the future, but today it´s just cheap shit. Gimme buttons!!

    Wow this is a similar unit that was in my Mum's New Zealand assembled 1993 Toyota Corolla Hatchback! Hers had radio as well. I thought we were rich because it had an Alpine head unit

    Lovely unit. Makes me want to buy a period correct car to go around it. I wonder if the line-in is for a separate radio or CD player. Great video.

      Yes maybe. Perhaps if the 'pre-in' is switched to on, the unit will be powered up (even without a tape inserted) and the built in power amp can be used for the pre-in.
