Hi. I'm a wedding photographer based in Toronto. You'll probably hear a lot about weddings on here, film photography, and gear - but only the best and beautiful kind of gear. This channel is where I tell you everything I've learned since starting my photography career in 2013.
$3,000 vs $10,000 Wedding Photographer - what's the difference?
What is the difference between a 3k and 10k wedding photographer? It may not be what you think it is.

9 Of My Favourite Wedding Photography Poses
None basically. Both still ruin the images in post production. Mediocre post work and misleading the clients saying they are “high end”Industry needs to change. You are a premium photographer not a high end photographer. This is what people need to realize and we need to teach the consumer the difference between good work and poor work.
Great content. Much appreciated - thanks for sharing your insights 🙏
Nailed it there Luke. In year three of my business I shot 104 weddings and that was on film:) and a way simpler work flow btw. Needless to say I doubled my prices for year 4 and ended up around 70 weddings which was cool. As my skill level increased so did my prices and the most interesting thing is my venues changed to the more exclusive hotels and that was an eye opener. If you are shooting in the top venues clients also expect to pay top dollar for their photography. As a friend once said to me "I'm reassuringly expensive" :) Also worth noting no matter the price point clients want lovely wedding photos and sometimes the ones looking for deals can be the most demanding. I've spoken to photographers and videographers that are scared about raising prices understandably but in a crowded market place that could be the smart move.
are you planning to do some bus videos? that would be great
The light adjuster/manipulator you use all depends on the situation you find yourself in. Gary Fong does have it's uses, both indoor and outdoor. BTW, do you realise you can still bounce with the Gary Fong Lightsphere? Way more natural then bouncing with your flash without the lightsphere. I still like GF, but I don't always use it anymore as I have more options now and choose the right tool for the situation.
Very good video, rarely do people talk on this issue so candidly! 1. Your intentional improvement was the takeaway from this video. 2. This replication (consistent look) is what a professional distinguishes from others. It is also true in personal life. I had heard this from Rafal Weigel on portrait photography. He had learned this from another photographer.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. YES the video is actually less about 10k photographers and more about how to get better! So I'm glad you got that. :)
I'm sorry I don't think any photographer is worth $10k. Sorry 🤷🏼♀️ I can't justify or rationalise how a trade that doesn't require a University degree can charge $10k for a days work. A dentist who studies for 6yrs doesn't charge one client $10k. A doctors who studies for 8yrs + should be charging $10k but yet they don't. Sorry Luke I love your stuff but this one I just can't agree. If it works for you cudos to you but I just can't justify paying that. I just married 4 kids in 3yrs and I'm a photographer and I was never going to pay $10k for a wedding photographer. We paid on average between $3.5k and $4.5k and we got great photographers.
I agree. Wedding photography (not all) is one of the most overpaid jobs going. I'm more than happy to work for £1000 for a wedding, including editing.
Interesting perspective! A few things. It's actually not a day's work. It's more like a week of work in total. So let's call it 40 hours for each wedding. So that's $250/hour. Which yes is a lot, but in most places around the world you can only shoot weddings for half the year. So in reality, if you trying to equal that to a trades person like an electrician who can work all year round, it's more like $125/hour which I know trades that do that no problem. So in my opinion it's actually not that crazy at all. Also Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg don't have university degrees. It's not about qualifications, it's about creating a service that is demand so much that some people will be willing to pay a lot for it. And yes my dentist has definitely charged me way more than 10k. That's because they have repeat clients, and wedding photography is hopefully a 1 time deal. :) And yes, actually I said that in the middle of the video, I said there are amazing photographers in the 3-5k range.
@@lukewtcleland I personally don't believe that photographers should just rely on the 6 months a year they can do weddings and then charge accordingly to make up for the other 6months. That's not the way employment/self employment works. The majority of the world works 5 days a week for 48 weeks a year to make a living. That's where diversifying our photography comes into play for the quiet months/off season. Many many people don't make $125/hr so I'm still inclined to believe Photography and wedding photography in particular is a very over charging industry. That's my opinion. I respect your views Luke and I mean no disrespect..I do enjoy watching your videos and you're an awesome photographer!!
To each their own, nobody is forcing anybody to pay 10k and above for a wedding photographer, is there a huge market for it? Yes there is, so why not charge for it if you’re valued at that or above, at the end of the day it’s the people’s decision wether to pay for it or not, you say you’re comfortable paying 3.5k for a wedding photographer and that’s justifiable for your budget, that’s fine, but there’s a lot more people with bigger budgets out there.
Just because you can't afford and justify paying it, doesn't mean it isn't worth it.
Thank you so much for this video Luke. I just followed you a couple days ago and ive been bing watching your video. Keep posting man, I'm so glad I found you
You're welcome! I love it! I'm so glad you've found them helpful!
Not much. Hype. I know 30+ potential $10k photographers who make crap money. We work 40-50 weddings a year not like these lazy $10k ones who do 5-6 and don’t have the experience… there you go $10k photographers have less annual experience year over year so are actually not as great. There’s your answer.
That's great you can work 40-50 weddings a year and not burn out! Interesting! I don't know any 10k photographers who only do 5-6 weddings.
Thanks for your thoughts Luke. I might just look at that Light and Airy preset. I really like the look it creates. I just need to book a few more weddings to justify it :)
Awesome thanks! Totally! Book those weddings! :)
Do you use your 50 mm lens for indoor ceremony too? How about if location for the ceremony is dim light? Would you use a flash?
I know what you mean about having to really think when using the v1 I think is because they can be used in 2 modes 1 for a trigger for other flashes , I also have a lot of ad 100 and they work with out having to think, and they twice as bright as the v1 thanks for making this video
New follower here. A really informative video at last. Great cheat sheet.
I admire your honest experience, but from a used of Godox flashes for a few years hearing the bad thing number 1... Man, just read the manual. It is a professional technology. It is not intuitive. It is not easy to learn just from using. Read. How. To. Use. It. Second, they are really easy to understand. You should honestly know how to use them after 1-2 days of shooting. I'm sorry, but come ooon. 🙂 The bad section of the video seems like trying to find something bad so badly it didn't actually work.
do you use auto white balance when shooting no flash?
Hello and THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THIS! I'd LOVE to know the best settings for Nikon mirrorless cameras (the z9 and z711 in particular). I used the profoto aix flashes wihen i used Nikon dslrs and they were wonderful (yes on ttl don't kill me!) BUT DO NOT WORK on the mirrorlesses. I've spoken at length with profoto and it's all Nikon's fault as it's been ove 2 years and they still haven't fixed the problem. Therefore my question is what are the best settings for indoor on camera flash photography for nikon mirrorlesses! Thank you so much!
Hi! I've been shooting film since the 1970's, I loved to see your excitment with this first roll! Great photos, by the way! Lots of people create a mystique on shooting film to make it look like something much more complicated than it actually is. Even developing your own film and darkroom printing are both much easier and simple than it seems. Hope you continue and evolve to developing and printing. it's amazing to enjoy the process and manage it. I also have an F100 and love it too! All the best!
My goal is to make my clients had a fun time with me. I don't want them to think when they leave that they didn't have a good time.
As an attorney, I made certain to advise one of my closest friends who is a photographer to not only include the fact that the images belong to the photographer but to bring that line to their attention by including a block to initial next to that part. It's important that there is no ambiguity in those terms. The images belong to the photographer. They have exclusive rights to their product. Raw files, edited files, publishing, printing, etc. They all belong to the photographer.
Please create a new video with a whole lot less of all of the you and all of your voiceover with a whole lot of not you and a lot of what you are referencing in this tutorial - visuals to back up all of the extended language that you are talking about in this 5 minute video that is over 15 minutes in duration ....
12:50 good shot, did you went all the way from 1/256 to 1/1 amd tested which setting was suitable when taking this shot?
Anyone that use this lens in a small studio ? I need one and I need it to be not that heavy .
this is wonderful; thanks for this! how do you decide when to push the iso up vs down? also, the "CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD" link doesn't work (not clickable) for the free cheat sheet - hope you could fix that soon! :)
It seems to me that many of your problems would be solved by switching to Profoto. If you are earning a decent living from your wedding photography, you owe it to yourself and to your clients to invest in equipment that will work day-in, day-out. The return on a single wedding presumably is enough for 2 Profoto A10s (and possibly the Air remote). No equipment is 100% reliable, including Profoto, but they have an extensive network of service agents and hire places. The Profoto has another advantage, based on your criticisms of the Godox: the set-up and functionality is the most simple and intuitive of any lighting manufacturer. The menus on both the units and the remotes couldn't be simpler, and the system is very reliable. Everything in clearer - great displays, a minimum of buttons, easily accessible menus. You just have to pony-up the cash. Btw., I have Godox equipment, including a V1, and it hasn't failed me, but then, I am not using it as intensively as you are.
People keep saying oh she showed how her photos look so you know what her style is but to be honest if you were not there you would not know how far off the colorimetry of her photos are. She may have thought that these people were very tan people on a really golden lighted day and when she gets a completely tinted sunglass version of reality for 8k she's going to feel ripped off. She could have just offered to provide the photos with either auto white balance from the camera or Lightroom instead and not really cost any time. Wedding photography is a Service not a Art form in my opinion.
Totally get it, the menu system is convoluted and not well thought out. Profoto is meant to be a lot easier to use. These flashes have been good for me though, just got to think hard every time i use them!
Please consider testing the Godox (yes I know, another Godox!), 860 iii (3). I have never liked the V1 in comparison as it was an obvious take on the Profoto speedlite, albeit 'affordable'. Where I feel the 860 iii, is an improvement to the previous 860 ii (2), in so many ways. There are a few areas where the intuitiveness can still be better, but for a robust, feature-packed light that has a battery that can last 2-3 events without concern, a modeling light that makes more sense AND is again indispensable in darker venues to allow you to see your subject and even help clients take pictures (because there are always those that want their pics NOW). Because I am very active at my gigs and use the Magmod light dome, I have had to replace the metal hot-shoe on my Sony version a few times, the negligible cost ($20) is nothing for a light I have been able to rely on for years now. I have considered getting and trying the Profoto A10, but it has been hard to justify the cost compared to what I have been able to get out of the 860iii's. I have 4, which is less expensive than buying a single A10.
READ THE MANUALS. If you use technology make sure you really know it. That way you can relax and focus on the photography without wrestling with what is going on. Not knowing exactly how to get the best from a device means you are not really free to make the right creative choices. Face up to the task of making the tech work FOR you. It is a habit you know you need to cultivate if you are a professional photographer. Just don’t let it become anything other than an item you can move past.
I was using my V1 at a wedding this past weekend. Had the bride and seven bridesmaids standing there for a picture and I hit a button on the V1 and it went into some funky mode screen I didn't recognize and had to stand there for 5 mins with 8 people looking at me while I hit every button on that flash trying to figure out what the heck I did. So yeah i agree with what said about the confusing menus and too many buttons.
Add something similar happened to me once while doing a shoot simply hit the reset buttons reset my channel and my power and I was back up and going in less than 2 minutes
I have a V1 in for repair now as it was failing to fire intermittently and then failed altogether at the end of one seasons use (with only about 4 events covered). Not an overheating issue and puzzled my local camera store. Been in for weeks with little feedback from Godox. If repaired I’ll use it for so long as it then lasts but would not buy again.
Very right on the intuitiveness, it's like the designers brainstormed the ways to make it as least intuitive as possible. Also the label of the button is in between two buttons, I keep inadvertently flashing people passing by lol. AND I WISH THE LOCK WAS A TOGGLE INSTEAD OF HAVING TO HOLD A BUTTON. Having said that, there is no Nikon alternative, it seems the camera brands have given up on speedlights. The Godox system is very capable but still relatively affordable (you can get a whole set of Godox flashes and triggers for the price of one Nikon SB-5000).
Bro… get two Flashpoint nano triggers. Flashpoint has awesome customer service. Same Godox product from Adorama.
Have to agree about the controls when in Manual mode, when in the moment, I find them a pain (esp as I need reading glasses)... But what's the alternative other than ProFoto and selling a kidney?
There is a use case for both. If you need the 1.2 bokeh wide open it’s beautiful. The 1.8 is much easier to carry about and does 85% of what the 1.2 will do. It’s a bargain. But I’d never sell the 1.2 for the wide open 1.2 magic. I’ve taken some of my best photos with it. Great video agreed with you 💯
I have a V1 and the biggest issue for me using it on camera is that some part of my forehead would bump the control wheel and my flash would change mode from TTL to something else. Several times per event. I purchased the Neewer Z2 which is also round but has a completely upgraded interface which is so much simpler. It is cheaper than the V1 and way easier to use.
Many points are fixed by the V1 Pro and the X3 Trigger.
I have another con for you, Luke. UNACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I bought the Godox V860 Mark III and it worked fine and had all the same pros as your V1s. Then, after about two years, I could not get the flash off the camera. I tried many times and properly, but no. So, not I'm stuck. I go on youtube and found a few photographers with the same problem and found that I could order a new Flash foot and change it my self. I watched those videos and I knew I could do it. So, I go on B&H and look it up. Then, I learned that it is not in stock and it is a custom order, 2-3 !!!MONTHS!!! to receive it!!! I also checked Adorama and my regional dealer Hunt's Photo in MA, same requirements. And, AND, they charge you $20 + shipping and tax for the replacement, because it's out of warranty, Insult to injury. So, I get the foot (3 MONTHS AND 2 DAYS) and notice the connection ribbon is tiny; actually smaller than tiny and also very thin. I think, maybe, about 1/8" wide and really thin. Then I notice the female plug connection on the flash is tiny and actually recessed in a hole/recess of sorts. What does all this connection talk mean, It was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to try and get the male ribbon into the female plug in the recess of the flash. Also, note that the female plug was not standing up, but rather it was laying flush in the recess. The flash did work, but to this day, I don't really know If I pushed the ribbon all the way in or was put in straight. I took some flash lit focus Bracketing pictures of a flower and it worked, firing the flash each time. But, then it would only fire on the first shot. I think that happened with in camera Stacking, while just bracketing shots was the one that worked each time. I assume all this is user error and I will go over the operations of the flash again and I will ask Olympus about using flash with in camera Stacking vs focus Bracketing. Now, what do I do if I want to add flashes? I do like my transmitter with the LCD and do like the features of the flash; what do I do? I don't know. CAVIET EMPTOR.
the build quality of Yongnuo speed lights is rubbish. I bought a couple and the plastic on both battery doors broke. I had to secure them with Duct tape.
The trigger indeed isn't intuitive. The Godox X Pro is usable and have some great features. I realy like the X3 one but in regards of design they made some special choises lets say. Resently used the V1 from a friend but we couldn't get it to work via the transmitter so we used it on the hotshoe and worked just fine. Buttons and settings arn't intuitive when using it for the first time but i think you can get used to it. Also use the AD400Pro love it will get a AD600 next
Luke I share your dislike of the way the V1 is controlled, I've not had any of the problems you've had but will look out for them. Be interested to see what you choose as replacements.
I have the same problem lately that is not firing , which system will you get next?
I thought I was the only one who was intimidated using the V1. I am glad that I heard it from a professional photographer. I have difficulty sinking in my mind with those buttons every time I use them.
I agree. The UI of the V860III and the V1 is poorly thought out. Another issue I have is when shooting in portrait orientation, the V1 head wont' stay in position if angled. It sags down under the weight of the head. Yes, the V1 is great for the price, I get that, however I have to agree with Luke - the UI is clumsy and the toggle wheel is rubbish. I bet it won't be long and Godox will have a UI and button layout more like the Neewer Z2.
Plus, I don't like click-bait promotions for videos. - BAK -
I don't think it is Godox's fault that you cannot or will not read a manual. Godox has a new X3 trigger that may be easier for you. And Westcott sell round-had flashes, but I don't know how easy they are to use. If you write the basic settings on a card and put it in the flash case, you might speed up the "turn on" process. Finally, look up Markus' video on the AD100 Godox. If your flash in on a stand, the AD100 may be perfect. -- BAK --
Not sure about your problems Luke, but I love my V1. Have used it for two years on all of my gigs/events/portraits and outdoor HSS fill-flash. Never had an issue. I also use the more expensive trigger that you have and it's really great. I'm also trying the smaller, cheaper TT350n flash - they are really awesome. When I shoot gigs outdoors, I have one flash on each of my Z nikons. These little square flashes are great because they have full TTL, and most importantly HSS. I use the Nikon 28mm, AFS 1.4E lens. Even outdoors in bright light those small flashes synch right up to 1/8000th sec. I use the eneloop pro rechargeable AA batteries and I get as many shots out of those as I do for the V1 rechargeable battery. Not sure why you find them confusing - once you've reset the settings a few times, it's normally dialled into your brain. I think anything else is going to cost you a fortune.
With the z6iii out and prices on older bodies going down, im debating to upgrade from my z6. I shoot occasionally so im really trying to justify buying the one instead of the z6ii. Dont get me wrong, it being new w/ better tech justifies the price but for what I do, I think the z6ii would be the way to go and then use that price difference and get a nice prime.
You get what you pay for. If you pay 20% of the price of a ProFoto ($200 instead of $1000), you'll get... I'd say ... _more_ than 20% of a ProFoto. Just don't expect the same quality for a fifth of the price. Godox flashes are in my opinion the currently best option for amateur photographers - especially because they offer a "complete" system of flash equipment from speedlights to studio flashes. And they can all be used in combination, and you can also for example use a Godox Nikon flash trigger to trigger a Godox Sony flash. However as a professional photographer who uses the equipment for multiple events a week, you'll probably want to invest a bit more money.
In reality, price is also set based on marketing and production/design costs. I'm sure the wages in Sweden are a couple of factors higher than the ones in China. Costs are much much lower with Godox, therefore the price is also lower. Price is not 100% connected to quality. It think that should be clear by an overload of examples in any domain, unless you're very young.
@@caleidoo As a manufacturer, however, you cannot afford to bring expensive, poor-quality products onto the market - at least not over a long period of time. Otherwise, you will soon be bankrupt. Since ProFoto has been in business for 50 years or so I think it's a safe bet to assume their product have good quality - and this is also what professional photographers usually tell me when I ask them.
@@stefan_becker I explained to you that lower price does not equal lower quality by definition and price is more than quality alone - it's compensation for all costs. But where exactly did I say that Profoto sells bad quality?
Rectangular heads give a perfectly even spread - if you use them right. Do you really think we put up with uneven coverage before round heads lol?!
Mostly good points and just a skill issue. That's not bad at all.
Be a man, just learn how to use them and stop whining on youtube
