I shoot weddings primarily as well. Trust me, going from the z6ii, which I shot since launch in 2020, to the Z8 was a huge eye opener when it came to autofocus speed and reliability. I didn't know what I was missing! I'm sure if/when you get the z6iii with the new autofocus you'll be hooked! It's especially good during receptions and also allows you to just focus on composition and capturing moments. I put my preorder in to use it as a backup to the Z8 but I think it could definitely be used as a primary camera if you want 2. I say get it! lol My 2 cents.
Also the silent shutter. On a wedding day, the shutter plays a role in the psychology of taking photos. When I’m directing the bride, I have the Z8 make the shutter noise. But for candids, I turn off the noise and people are more relaxed.
@@MichaelSeneschalThis is such a good point. I also use the silent shutter during indoor ceremonies or churches where the sound can be distracting. Even though I like the 45mp for dx crop (I use primes) I made the 24mp work for years! I kinda miss the z6ii a little lol.
I was a Nikon shooter with a D850.for 9 years, but began to need good AF in video, so moved to Sony. The difference that good AF has made to my working speed has been fantastic. You really can't underestimate how much excellent AF helps. It's great to see Nikon now finally catching up with Sony and Canon. The only slight issue I've seen is one highlighted by Jared Polin, that the eye detect can slip if hands or object move in front of the face, say like a boxer. But this is probably a niche situation
@@markshirley01Yes, fast, reliable autofocus can definitely change the way you shoot and make things more efficient over the course of a wedding day. Tbh, I think the z6iii should do perfectly fine in a slower wedding environment compared to boxing where hands are quickly and consistently flying in and out of someone’s face. I was able to get a good hit rate with the z6ii (albeit you really have to work and massage that autofocus during reception lol).
As a wedding photographer myself. I say you should get the Z8. I bought it for the wrong reasons. Although the one I actually use the most is the 1/32000th “shutter” at iso 64. I can shoot my f1.2 lenses in any lighting at any time of day. That’s something I use all the time
You can allready load custom colour profiles in to your Nikon Z camera. Also some fujifilm profiles. That is not new for the Z6iii. I prefer to pick up a Z8 later in the year over the Z6iii. The price point is really similar. Either a Z6iii or Z8 is great anyway.
I think at 45mp the Z8 is not really the best for weddings. The size and weight is also not the best for a 8-12hr day. On top of that this camera will be way better in low light and the file sizes are going to be so much better for weddings. The new focus system is a must if you have a z6ii. I got a ZF and 2 x Z6ii and only want to shoot with my ZF, it’s just a joy to shoot.
The Picture Control Profiles are barebones limited. You can only control BCS and Curves. It's not at all like the Fuji recipes (which does include WB). The new Flexible Control features Color Blender & Color Grading. It's almost like LUTs but not really.
@@Martin-N-TraceyI shoot the Z8 for weddings and the 45mp (although not needed) is actually welcomed. The weight is something to consider in honesty but because I only use primes, the ability to crop without losing quality is nice. Also, there’s been some deep dives into the difference between Lossless, HE* and HE and there’s little to no visible difference between the three but a huge difference in file size. I was using HE* (≈33mb files) since launch but recently switched to HE (≈20mb) now that I see I’m really not losing much of anything at all in file flexibility.
I agree with you Luke on the z6iii...as a z6ii shooter i have 2 of them and i preordered it the z6iii and can't wait to try the z6iii myself.. the cloud thing is amazing becausr i shoot lots of events and this is much needed
RAW video is very flexible in post…if you use well corrected cine glass. But stills glass can often require a lot of in camera correction which can get lost in RAW processing. Most often you will want to film in N-log which will bake in the lens corrections but provides a lot of latitude in terms of final color.
I so appreciate your transparency of not knowing exactly what they are talking about but still talking about how you feel about it! You are just the best!! 🫶 Thanks dude!!
As a Z9 & Z8 owner, if I didn't have those, I'd be all over this Z6iii launch 🎉 I'm hoping the feature of adding your own custom presets to show in-camera will be a firmware update soon (&/or whatever that app was).
Hi Luke, I've been following your channel for a while now. Great videos, really helpful tips. This question is not related to Z6III, rather it's my Z6II. I myself as a photographer (fairly a new one) using a Z6II. I have one huge issue with Auto eye focus feature. It always catches the eye of people in the background, not the subject I am trying to capture. I sometimes miss really good moments because of this annoying issue. I am using the box thing some times to narrow down the focus area but even so if someone is in the background also is inside the box, my cam would pick that person's eye. Is there a work around this that you've figured out? Could you please help out if you have. Thanks in advance.
I have the Z6 and Z6ii. Waiting for the Z6iii I got the Zf and the Z8. Looking at the reviews and specs of the Z6iii has just about convinced me to get another Zf.
100% this. The price gap of 700€ for video capabilities only is not worth it to the Z6III from the ZF. The ZF is pretty much the same camera for stills and does a great job for video + it is really stylish for event work.
24.5mp is the sweet spot for weddings, smaller files and better low light performance than the Z8 because of the lower MP. Nikon knows this. As a wedding photographer the only advantage of higher MP is that you can crop in, but most of the time we’re not cropping in 100%, we’re doing small crop here and there so it’s unnecessary to have a 50-60mb file 🤷🏾♂️!
Oh definitely. I think it's plenty. And slightly better in low light performance, annnd space/file size is much better when shooting thousands of photos.
I have the Z7 which I purchased on sale for $1k off about 1.5 yrs ago. I love it but the AF leaves something to be desired. I’d like to sell it to help pay for the Z6III but I have a project I need to complete with it first.
You know how the Z6ii has that point tracking focus, where you assign it to a function button, it brings up a box and that box will track with the subject? The Z6iii has that, but it’s called 3D. 3D is better because it’s the same tracking, but it INCLUDES eye AF as well. :) :) :) :) :)
Interesting! That's pretty cool. I get a little stressed when my focus moves around. for weddings I prefer a little less automated things. But that included AF sounds interesting for sure
Been waiting for Nikon to come out with a FF camera with flip out screen. Almost went to Sony with A7RV because of this. I do have Z9 and love it for pro shoots, hoped Z8 had a screen like the A7RV. Skipped Z8, got excited with the Zf but concerns about ergonomics got me to hold off and see what Z6III will offer. Pre ordered ZIII and will be using it as my travel and video camera.
My thoughts on the Expeed7 after upgrading from the Z6ii (to the Z8, but the Z6iii is the same). First 2 minutes = The Z8 focuses the same as my Z6ii… pffft, the Z6ii focuses fine. After first 2 minutes = I’m never touching the Z6ii again.
Please give a genuine 😅 feedback.... M so much torn between s5iix and z6iii ...just the video features! Photos both is more than ok. Btw its not a full stacked sensor like that of a xh2s....its partially stacked...
Did you preorder it? Once you try the new focus system you’ll never go back. I have the new ZF and I never want to pick up my Z6ii. You don’t even know what you’re missing until you try it, then you’ll never go back.
No not yet! I'll probably wait until one of my cameras die and then get it. One of mine is getting up there in actuations, so it will probably be soon. Hahha
@@lukewtcleland makes sense, I usually try to sell my cameras before they loose all value. So I’m selling my z6ii hopefully for $1200 and that justifies the purchase of the Z6iii at almost half the price 🤷🏾♂️ but I definitely don’t really need it since the ZF is working great with the added grips
3:12 To that point, Idk your set-up, but invest $30-40 (USD) in an EYE-CUP to replace the stock Nikon eyepiece. It's a gamechanger for bright/harsh sunlit days &/or glare.
I shoot weddings. After over 3,5 years with Z6II and now with Z8 I can tell without even seeing in person Z6III that it will be perfect camera for any wedding photographer. Z8 is fantastic nut it,s actually a little too much for weddings. Z6II was missing two things IMO. It was of course better AF performance and better ergonomics - I personally like bigger bodies. That's why Z8 sits in my hands perfectly.
For Video, you as a RUclipsr won't need the full RAW recording. If you try to use RAW you'll fill up your memory card in no time, it's just so much information. I'd suggest shooting your videos in H.265 10-Bit Log. It'll give you more colours then then regular video (which is 8-bit) and you'll be able to correct them better like you're hoping for :)
New cams are hyped so much these days. I fell from the Z8 only to find it’s just a mediocre camera😳. Much prefer the Z5 and have done weddings with it!
