From your first video, I've gained a deep understanding of using flash. I used all the techniques that I had shot for the wedding, and I was surprised by the results of the images. However, I need to learn more about off-camera flash since I'm not confident using off-camera flash.
Bonjour Luke. Oups. Merci pour vos vidéos. Bonne continuation. ANNE.
Yes, very good idea!
I participated as a second shooter for a wedding, few weeks ago, and my main struggle was to set up properly the on-camera flash in order to freeze the action on dancing floor. Also, we had a lot of DJ laser moving lights, with different colors, different intensity, I had to photograph straight in those light. I returned back home with a lot of blurry photos 😥 (I used the shutter speed mainly at 1/200 sec + on-camera flash, for the sync with my flash). Yep, some advices in this direction would be more than welcome. Thx!
I would be interested in a recording of the class if possible. I'm not a professional wedding photographer so I don't want to take someone's place but I am curious about flash and want to get better at it.
Every time I try to use flash, I run into a few problems, in no particular order.
1. I don't know which gel to use to balance it with the ambient light.
2. The flash exposures are different even when everything is set to manual. I'm guessing it has something to do with the way flashes recycle but I always fall back to continuous lights because I know my shots will look the same every time. The white balance also subtly shifts between shots. I have 2 Godox flashes and they both do that. I only shoot manual everything.
3. The situations I shoot in are fast paced, I don't have time to keep taking test shots and adjust, so I never know what flash power to use or where to bounce the flash to get the look I want.
Basically, I find flash to be unreliable, unpredictable, and inconsistent.
I would love to sign up! I am curious how much the brand of the flash matters in terms of collaboration with specific cameras? How do you use flash without interrupting the moment like if your subjects will blink of discomfort, do you just let them know prior that you are going to use flash? How do you use flash outdoors let’s say the bride and groom and between you and the sun. You’ll have backlight from the sun(at sunset) and you want to brighten the subjects? And last question how to do edit the subjects to counteract the washing out of color of your subject due to flash?
Great idea but I won't sign up because I'm not a professional wedding photographer, so I don't want to take someone else's place but I would advise anyone wanting to sign up to do so. But it's great for any photographer. As I sat through the first technique you went through I thought where is this going and by the end of it I was like, wow; simple but extraordinary. I tried the technique just for a home event. Best indoor photography I've ever done. It doesn't just teach use of flash for one scenario, it teaches use of flash and how to control it, just as general knowledge. Most science breakthroughs in history have been described as extraordinary and beautiful in their simplicity. You've done something like this in your explanation of how to use flash. I know I'm ranting here but it was one of those insights you receive every now and then and after the lesson or the insight you realize something special just happened. Oh you mean I can tell the flash what to do and the ambient what to do? Cool!
Bouncing vs direct vs handheld
Would loveee to sign up ❤
Cool!
I want to share some of my own struggles, especially during the wedding night parties.
I approach the night with confidence, ready to set up my flash, telling myself I’ll keep shooting until I get it right.
However, I quickly become nervous when reviewing my shots. I worry that they're overexposed and look too 'flashy,' which leads me to switch everything to auto and take flashless pictures with the DJ lights.
While those shots can sometimes look cool, I know they stem from my lack of skill.
I've taken multiple flash courses, including those by Tailor Jackson and Magic Wedding Photographer (which I paid for), but I still find using the flash awkward.
I also saw multiple youtube videos like yours. Here are some of the major challenges I still face after all those courses:
- Flash Power: I struggle to determine the right flash power. Bouncing the light isn’t always possible, and pointing it straight at people makes me anxious about blinding them.
- Adjusting Flash Power: I feel like I constantly need to readjust the flash power every time I change my angle, which seems excessive.
- Understanding RAW Images: I'm not accustomed to seeing RAW flash images; I usually only see processed ones. This leaves me questioning the quality of my shots, especially when they look awkward fresh out of the camera.
- Godox V1 Add-Ons: The various add-ons for the Godox V1 are completely uncharted territory for me, especially since I’m still learning to use the bare flash.
- Dynamic Shots: I’m intrigued by the cool effects you can achieve with moving subjects and dynamic backgrounds, but I’m unsure how to create those effects myself.
I hope this isn’t too much for a comment, but I find your project incredibly interesting and would love to contribute.
My name is Pauline Vandewiele from Belgium, and I've shot my first six weddings.

My biggest fear each time is those night shots, as I’m very scared of my flash-'skills'!
If you want I could send you a thorough document that I could work on where I give feedback to the flashcourses I have already done.
I signed up to the class notification, maybe I can be of use
Thank you for the great content!
Wow, hey Pauline! This is great! Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know what you'd like to learn. I think these are really good questions, that I have taken notes, and added all your questions to be answered in the class. I hope you can make it to the class! I think I can give you a lot of confidence in how you use your flash.
If you want to send more info you totally can to hellolukecleland@gmail.com that would be really interesting to see how I can help you where other flash courses have not helped. I took a look at your galleries, and I think you're doing a great job for just starting out! Keep going!
Thanks Luke. Balancing flash with ambient seems to be quite tricky for many people so that mifght be a great topic to include.
Yeah great point! That is a tricky thing to do for sure, and that will definitely be in it. Thanks!!
Hello and THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THIS! I'd LOVE to know the best settings for Nikon mirrorless cameras (the z9 and z711 in particular). I used the profoto aix flashes wihen i used Nikon dslrs and they were wonderful (yes on ttl don't kill me!) BUT DO NOT WORK on the mirrorlesses. I've spoken at length with profoto and it's all Nikon's fault as it's been ove 2 years and they still haven't fixed the problem. Therefore my question is what are the best settings for indoor on camera flash photography for nikon mirrorlesses! Thank you so much!
I have a winter wedding coming up on December, 20th. Wedding is a 3pm so it's going to be dark an hour after ceremony start. The venue for the wedding ceremony and reception is in a local hotel which has very little natural light. I will definitely need to use flash. I'm shooting the wedding solo so need to be able to figure out what intensity of flash I'll need and it will either be mounted on camera or hand held. I'm absolutely panicking big time. I need your help!
Totally! Make sure to sign up for the masterclass it will definitely give you the tools you need for that wedding!
@@lukewtcleland I've already signed up. Hoping to be a bit more confident by the time December 20th arrives. Looking forward to your Masterclass.
@@IrishBelieber21 awesome! you've got this!
One of my concerns using flash during wedding photography is when i need to change the flash setting in between for different scenario real quick, and also making the flash outcome to look more natural, and also using flash to take group photo with natural outcome, thank you Luke!:)
Really good points! Yes, changing between scenarios can be scary! But it's doable! And flash looks AMAZING when you know how to make it look natural. I willl be going into that in depth!
Group photos! That's a good one. - ADDED!
TTL and Speed light
NOTED!
I would love to know how to use my flash when I hold it in my hand angling downward but it’s triggered by my camera if that makes sense?😂
Yes you made very simple hence it’s popular 🎉
Thanks!! Yes I'm really excited for this class, because I think I'm taking a lot of complicated topics and I've been able to narrow it down to a very understandable way.
How to get it soft enough. Even on the lowest setting, it always seems so "flashy"!
Using manual and being quick enough to change settings
I haven’t even tried using flash yet because I’m so intimidated. So I don’t even know what questions to ask! I guess I’ll need help with everything from connecting the flash to my camera… to knowing how to adjust the settings.
I’ve shot 5 weddings without flash! My camera has AWESOME ISO capabilities… so it’s worked out ok. But I do feel a bit hamstrung and I really want to use flash so I can improve even more!
Awesome that you've shot 5 weddings! Yes, it's very doable to shoot a wedding without flash. But you can make your images way way better if you know how to use it well. Yes I'll be going over the basics as well, included all the key elements to a flash you should know how to use.
ahhh so sad that I'm not even close to your area
It’s an online class!
using flash with good wb..im always stressful when its ome to wb
WB! Yes it's hard for so many people. I'll be covering that in depth!
I feel confident using 2 to 3 off-camera flashes, but I still want to learn from you as you tackle issues raised by others.
My next learning GOAL is to learn to use TTL flash metering mode with multiple units but with varying power of each unit.
By this, I want to achieve uniform control of all-flash units (up/down) at the same time, for different moods by varying from one dial control (the trigger unit).
I don't use multiple flash units for weddings. HOWEVER, I use a LOT of multiple units when I shoot interior photography. Which I think is another class I'd like to do in the future.
But I will definitely be going over remote units, as well as TTL.
@@lukewtcleland Thanks Luke. I learned quite a few things from your channel.
@@lukewtcleland pleaaaaaaaaase do interior photography! that's so interesting I can't find any good info about this on youtube and I am an interior architect, this would be super interesting!
@@BindingTales wow! okay! haha my wife has been telling me to do one for a while and I didn't think anyone would be interested! So what would you find interesting? Like how I photograph interiors, how I use lighting etc?
@lukewtcleland, that’s the issue-interior architecture is a very niche field, and I often hear people echoing your sentiment: “nobody cares.” But we do care (so much), especially since there’s such a lack of information available!
One of the first things I believe is necessary to focus on is how to compose photography. Most interior architects already have their own approaches or training in this area, which makes it important for a non- interior architect to understand this designer way of thinking. So composition is a very important one for non-interior-architects. The next important thing is mastering aspects like lighting, decluttering spaces, identifying the right tools, and choosing the best lenses and flash options. Personally, I prefer interior photography that utilizes a two-point perspective, as it helps keep interiors clean while showcasing the design and flow effectively. Things like your tips to crop at the table (you said this in your roast-and toast video are things that stick with me, being an interior architect.
in my case; I'm an interior architect with a cool camera. What do I do now? I have my projects that are finished and would like to photograph my designs, what tools do I take with me and what are the interior-techniques to make images of interiors rather than people?
It's a fascinating topic that remains largely unexplored on RUclips. After nine years in the industry, I’ve noticed a significant gap in content that addresses these specific needs, in the way I like it. I mean there is content on it,... but the kind of clean photography that I'm talking about? it's nowhere explained.
here's some reference photographer's I'm talking about that I would love seeing their behind the scenes of (not including you because I don't know where to find your interior photogrpahy) :
