Building A Wood Pallet Surfboard
For this build, I wanted to challenge myself to build a surfboard with a single pallet. Wood pallets are easy to find and often free. So it's a great resource to experiment with even if the wood is terrible. This board ended up only being 3'3"x 16.5", more of a body board than a surfboard. I could have used more than one pallet to make it bigger however I wanted to test the waters and see if I could make something only using one pallet. Will it surf? who knows. If it does I know I can make something better using more than one pallet. Going with a sealer instead of glassing may cause some issues but I really wanted to make this as cheap as possible. If I need to I can always glass it in th...

Making Surfboard Fins from a Cracked Log
Просмотров 7645 месяцев назад
These might be my favourite fins I've made! I made them from a cracked maple log that I filled with black epoxy. To fill the cracks I made a mold that I then poured black epoxy into, similar to how epoxy river tables are made. For these surfboard fins I wanted to use up the fibreglass tabs I had made in a previous fin video. The fibreglass tabs are made with 36 layers of 6oz fibreglass and epox...

      @WaveWasters 14 дней назад

      @@asce2273 Thanks! I went back and forth on adding foam to it especially where I didn't glass it. In the end I decided to go without. • @callalilycollective
      @callalilycollective 14 дней назад

      How would foam inside make it more buoyant? You're adding more mass to the same volume. Maybe it would help with thermal swelling and contracting to lower the loading on the glue joints. I could see it adding some structural support on deck loading for hollow frame and skin would board though.

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters 14 дней назад

      @@callalilycollective Only makes it more buoyant when it eventually leaks, which is why I considered it😆. Other wise your just adding a little bit of weight/structural support. I could also be wrong though.

      @milospotuzak3251 10 дней назад

      But this is chambered wooden board, with this method of construction you usually won't add in any foam. What you mean probably is different type of construction when they shape a board out of EPS foam and then they glue on the wooden rails and vaccuum bag the wooden skin deck and bottom... if I am wrong I would be happy to be corrected. Cheers. Anyway Matt great build! Looking forward to watch some surfing vid of this little beast :)))))

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters 5 месяцев назад

      When I started making fins years before I started the channel I used roving a lot. Some of my best fins used it but I always found it hit or miss. I think its because I was using slow set epoxy it would shift a little or cause the glass to bubble. I found it worked best glassing one side of the fin then the other. Once I got into vacuum bagging even with this crude setup. I found I was getting better results glassing both side of the fin at once without roving. It also cut glassing and sanding time in half with better results aside from some leading edge bubbles. I've been experimenting with resin infusion which may be an even better option.

      Not to bad, when this was filmed I think water was still above 40f. Thanks! I'm think I may do some similar videos on old boards since I'm not sure what builds I'll be able to to do next year. Luckily I have two more fins ones filmed.

    Those were done good sized waves Matt! You tamed them like a kid playing in the backyard! You can shred brother! I amazed at how “in touch” you are with your equipment. Must be nice to have that much experience under your belt. I’m 6 seasons in this sport and I’m still chasing a “green” ride and a carved bottom turn…lol! Anyhow, always a pleasure to watch your videos. Carry on! Cheers, John

      Hahaha thanks john. Lots of time in the water trying lots of boards and fins has helped with figuring out what works for me. Hopefully with your new board you will be catching lots of green waves.

    They really turned out to be a nice looking fin, I'm definitely gonna try a little denim somewhere. My old simmons had the tracking problem in waves with more power too. I ended up having to put in extra plugs slightly further forward with 0 toe and heaps of cant, it didn't like getting out on the face as much but it was nasty in the pocket. Got any ideas for your next project?

      @@WaveWasters that cool wood boards are a whole step up in skill and tools, I certainly won't be attempting one😄 but from what I've seen of your workshop you know your way around wood. I look forward to seeing it come together

      @@ManOfSauce Yeah its a different way of thinking compared to foam. I'm trying two different ways but using free wood so hopefully I can get something that floats.

    When I'm comparing the denim fins to the keels, I'm referring to these keels I made: ruclips.net/video/6hPlnHdLes4/видео.html In the future I'll to get some footage of the different fins as I'm talking about them.
