Another sick video. I use the original gorilla glue for my glue ups. It shapes relatively easy. I can write a book on stringerless Verse stringer and flex but IMO there isn’t a need for a stringer if you use the appropriate glass schedule. Looking forward to the shaping vid. Yew!
Thanks! I've tested the gorilla glue for the board I'm doing next to make a 9' blank. Shapes easy but the epoxy I feel like is between stringer-less and a stringer. I've noticed on boards I've surfed a lot. The epoxy stringer is slightly proud where the foam compresses around it. Similar to a wood stinger only way way less pronounced. I'll have to try the gorilla glue stringer for a board and see if I notice more flex.

Wax paper or parchment paper can work. However I found that it sometimes stuck, and the resin didn't always cure as clear from the wax/texture. A better cheap alternative is big plastic freezer bags similar to sandwich bags. I like to use 6 mil poly vapor barrier but I have it on hand already. If you just want a flat surface you can make one using a silicone mat or use packing tape or tuck tape on a flat board.
I can't remember the exact density any more, Its been awhile since I've ordered it. But it was a bit denser then 2lbs per cubic foot if I'm remembering correctly. The company makes it for various things one is for floating docks. For glassing I'm using a double 6oz top and 6oz bottom. The weave of the glass has more fibres going the length of the glass. Which in theory gives more strength threw the length of the board but would also stiffen it a little.
@@BarlitosC Yeah, typically I do one layer of 6oz on the bottom. I've surfed overhead waves with them but not barrelling hollow waves. We get the thick really cold water waves, then more steep tropical stuff. If your surfing waves that are eating everyone's boards you could try using double 6oz if you don't mind the extra stiffness and weight.

Another option is glueing blocks of recycled EPS together, it's used alot for shipping protection. Or you can always order a blank from a surf supply place.
Very cool build Matt! It reminds me of the days when I used to cut out foam wings for r/c planes. I used to curse the "dip" or "drag" of the hot wire as it seems to stretch when it gets hot and leave a bit of a concave in the wing. It was a learning experience and I finally got the hang of it. I see you used a 120VAC hot wire...am I correct? Really looking forward to seeing how this comes out. An old friend and I made a windsurfer using 2" foam XPS sheets ( I think that's what they are called...the pink or blue hard foam building insulation ) laminated together. It was a real pain, first of all gluing the sheets together and then secondly dealing with the glue in the seams when you cut the board out in the foam. The board turned out OK and it was tough. If you dinged it you didn't have to worry about that type of foam absorbing water. In fact, my friend, who used the board, broke the nose off of it and never fixed it. He just kept on windsurfing it like that! He also tried to drive in his garage one day with the board on top of his Forerunner and hit the fin on the garage door frame. It didn't hurt the board and the board didn't have a stringer either. He moved out west and I actually have that board behind the garage of my house...lol! Good Luck! Cheers, John 😎👍
I'm just using an old extension cable for the wire. Im using an old battery charger running at 6V dc I can't remember the amps but it works perfect with the welding wire I'm using. There are lots of better ways to make one I'm just using what I have on hand. Making wings I suspect needs to be more accurate for the foils then a surfboard blank. I find I have to be careful of the ends with the wire sag. You should take that board out and see if it will surf :P
@@WaveWasters Ahso...gotcha on the hot wire rig...that makes sense now...cool! I actually have 2 boards out back. I know YOU could surf them...not me...lol! They both need some TLC as my friend tried to refinish the first one we made and he made one on his own and didn't put a nice finish on it. It worked but it looks pretty raw as he used micro balloons or some type of light filler in the resin and that looks like crap...literally as it was brown. I may take them down to Brian as he makes boards. There are also others down that way who are experimenting with making their own boards...they might take them on as a "special project". I may have to get them out and look them over...who knows what may become of them!
Mainly it was cheaper then buying a 2 foot wide chuck of foam this big as at the time it was I think a standard size they cut. It's also easier to move around two 4'x8'x1' sheets than one big 2 foot wide sheet.
I found an EPS manufacturer that wasn't a crazy distance from me. I heard they are fairly common so if you look online you might be able to find one near you. They often focus on insulation for homes so if you check your local hardware store's eps you might be able to find your local manufacturer's name there.

I've done 8' no problem but this blank is thinner and the design has a weaker spot to it. But if the design works should be super fun.
now those are some loooong clamps to hold the blank :o Great video !
Picked them up just for gluing blanks together. I've seen people use bungee cords but I like the bars for keeping the two sides aligned.

hey question, why even do 2 pieces if you don‘t put a stringer in it? wouldnt it be easier to just cut out 1 piece?
