Building a Cork Composite Surfboard in the Back Garden

- A board built with EPS foam, wall cork, and fibreglass. It was made as a birthday present for my girlfriend.
EPS is incredibly cheap, lightweight, and really easy to get hold of (this block of foam came from the local Wickes!). There is some epoxy-laminated glass fibre tape laminated onto the EPS, to give the board a bit of extra strength, and to set the rocker angles during the build.
Cork is a natural material, that's great for sandwich composites like the one seen here. It soaks the resin well for minimal weight gain, whilst also being impact resistant and great in compression.
The cork was glued down to the EPS with expanding polyurethane glue. its really easy to get a consistent, reliable coverage this way. This means the EPS is well protected from the Polyester resin.
The board was glassed with Polyester because of the optical properties, ease of working, and cost. it allowed me use fabric inlays and resin pigments without being at risk of UV damage.

Epic build man! Wow
THAT ...was an awesome job. I just walked in from the garage , experimentinf with resin and cork for a boat mod. I'm lovin it. You're a genius! That looks really Boss!
I'm surprised more like this hasn't been done before. Good idea and skills, well done!
the best board construction i ve seen! I will try it to improve kitesurfe wave board resistance
Amazing result
Where did ya get ya wide cork from seen cork in
B n Q but not as wide as that
Fabulous idea well done you
I went to a tile store. Cork is used as an underlayment and it is cheap. Three foot wide sheets.
