  • This is how I install future fin boxes in my surfboards using my homemade wood jib. I am not a professional by any means but this is the way that I found works best for me. It uses a simple wood jig and use two pretty easy-to-find router bits. Someday I'd like to get the one pass bits designed for future's boxes but this method is a cheap alternative to the expensive bits and router kits.

Another sick vid man. Your clips deserve more views than what they’re getting.

Thanks Sam! I'll have to try and get some footage of surfing it. I've really been slacking with taking the GoPro out. Just get too stoked to get in the water and forget it.

Hiya Matt, Sooo cool to bump into you on Casey Willax's live chat last night! I didn't know you were a CDub fan! I used to watch Casey a lot when I was watching Ben Gravy...I'm kinda "watched out" of those guys for now tho...I do catch one of their videos from time to time and my timing last night was perfect! Fun to watch you work your magic once again in surfboard construction in the ongoing "How It's Made" process. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers, John 😁

I check out his content every now and then. I just saw he was live and figure I would pop in while I was working on a video. Pretty sick he has his own Board now.

Thanks for the helpful vid, man! Do you possibly have a vid or source for making the futures template?

I don't have a video on it yet but it could be a good one to make.
For this jig I made the template by attaching to strips of scrap wood to the base. They are spaced the same width as the router base. This allows the router to run in a straight line. I then added one of the ends to stop the router. I then marked out the fin box length on the jig from the end stop. I then added onto that distance, the distance from the router bit(rabbit bit for the flange) to the edge of the base doubled to the jig and added the other end stop. After that I marked out the box length between to the two end stops and cut out the shape of the box. If everything is correct the Rabbit bit should cut the exact length of the flange and the other bit will cut the box depth.

Hopefully that explains it well enough to figure it out, and I didn't make it more complicated then it needs to be😆
If you have my questions I'll try to explain it better.
