Surfing A Door

  • I had this old folding panel door that was falling apart and I wanted to see how well it would surf. The door surfed better than I thought it would however being a hollow panel door it filled up with water pretty fast. Which made it really heavy, and slow to paddle. The door also started to split, but towards the end of the session, I was starting to figure it out. I think I'll try this again with another door and hopefully some larger waves.

    Very cool
Too bad you don't live in Europe.
The round top doors from some of their Romanesque architecture would really smooth out the turns or better still one of those pointy tip catholic church doors to give you more tail hold when it starts walling up🤙

That would be sick to try, I wonder if I can find any like that around here. This was just a super cheap folding closet door, it had lots of holes so filled with water quick. I was surprised how well it held an edge, not as mush slide as I thought it would have. But the sloshing water on the inside felt pretty weird haha. I'm going to see if I can find a some better doors to try. Something solid that won't let water in would be ideal.

Haha...you're gonna put board shapers out of business and make contractors wonder why they are having to replace so many doors on houses these days...LOL!!! 🤣🤣🤣 You're a hoot Matt! Just wondering...does your closet now have a surfboard for a door? Teehee... I needed the smile you just put on my face bro...thanks for the wholesome entertainment! Cheers, John 😁👍

Hahaha I don't think you will see too many doors floating in the line up anytime soon. Once they fill with water its a nightmare to paddle. If I can find a soild wood door it might go better.

@@WaveWasters I didn't want to criticize, but I didn't think that type of door was the best to try...but you did it anyhow...waterlogged or not...amazing! 😮

@@funafter5081 I was surprised it didn't snap but it had more damage after surfing then before. It was already falling apart so it's not like it was useful as a door any more.

Great vid and doors surfing!! Really surprised how good and rapidly you managed to surf them! But maaan, at least you could use some The Doors song for this video :D haha

It took a couple wipe outs to figure out the lack of rocker for the length, but it worked better than expected till it filled with water. Would have been a good choice for music haha.

I could... but that takes away the fun of going out and finding breaks on your own. :P

Based on a few comments bellow, it would be cool to 'discover' shaping conventions, starting from a door.
Does nose outline make any difference? Does tail outline make and difference? Etc.
You could round the nose and see if it stops turning, then ride it backwards and see how a round tail changes it
Then make the other and a point and ride in both directions.

That would be really cool to do some day! I'd probably have to build a board that's door like and hire a filmer. But it's a project I'd love to tackle, just need some extra money to build/get the doors.

You should try an old fridge door... it's like a finless mini simmons 😅
You know the ones with rounded edges.
I did it and was very surprised

It's on my list hahaha, so is a cooler lid but they are hard to find. I want to revisit the door again if I can find a couple more.

What size fridge door did you surf and were you able to 360 it?

    • @danielbarbieri8199
      @danielbarbieri8199 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@WaveWasters
I don't remember exactly the size, but it was like 5'2" x 24" wide.
360... I didn't try, I'm not a good surfer, it was a bet with a friend years ago. At this time I was surfing with SUP only, the challenge was to take off and pop up. I did 180 accidentaly, I imagine that 360 will be easy for you.

@@danielbarbieri8199 That's sounds like a really fun size! If you got to your feet and went a little ways I bet after a few sessions you could get it. Still super cool to hear about someone surfing a fridge door. Hopefully I'll come across one in my search.
