The Creeper Trail: After Helene
The Creeper Trail, Damascus VA:
Abingdon to Damascus
Prior to the hurricane, The Virginia Creeper Trail was a 35-mile multi-purpose rail trail. Located in southwestern Virginia, the trail ran through Damascus, from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia, near Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and the North Carolina state line.
Damascus is a small town with a BIG claim to fame: Several renowned trails intersect within our town limits, bestowing the honor of "Trail Town USA". As these trails pass through downtown Damascus, they bring along people, stories, and culture from all walks of life.

Great drone footage! We've done the Whitetop to Damascus ride several times and are heartbroken about the damage. Count us in for a group ride in the spring.
We had reservations to ride last summer, before my wife took a tumble and broke her wrist. So we plan on trying it again this summer. And then while we are out there day trip some of the AT high points.
Great video, Bane. Can’t get down there anytime soon, but made a donation to the Virginia creeper trail conservancy. Best of luck to those in the region in their recovery. Pat
I bet you pay more attention to them next time

Thank you Bane! Loved the ride you shared today and letting everyone know what's happening and to help support this beautiful town. 💗
This is so sad. Riding the Creeper Trail is such an experience. I am so thankful I was able to do the White Top section and soak up the beauty. I hope it comes back stronger than ever in the future. I will plan to come back and do the open portion to support Damascus!
Keep us posted on that spring ride, never rode the trail, but looking forward to riding it. Got a few friends interested to ride, so keep your channel posted, just subscribe to your channel. Thanks for sharing
@@crewznn01 I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! And thanks for subscribing!

Great job, shots are so atmospheric!! Love it 👏👏

I love being frugal as you.. I enjoy sleeping in my Hotel Sienna.. saving money.. but I also like visiting mom & pop places.. Small town Cafes, bicycle shops, and great eats.. I want all these places to be in business when I get back ✝️💫😁
@@billysbikesbrews7183 I grew up really poor, and after having kids any money I did have went towards them. I still feel like I have to justify any money I spend on myself. It’s weird, and probably needs some therapy to deal with lol
@ I’m faraway from being rich.. the older I get the more I realize Less is Best.. I tell my wife all the time no gifts.. let’s make memories.. Less Junk More Journey 🚐🚴♂️😎🌞💫
@ yea. I’m a bit of a minimalist at this point myself. Backpacking gives you an idea of what you really need, real fast lol I can afford to go eat and stuff now, it’s just a mental gap feeling like I have to justify it
Always wanted to stay at the Old Mill Inn.. I heard great things about.. rainy bike ride on the Creeper Trail.. what a different & Amazing view 🚴♂️😎
Hello Bane. Is the section of trail you are riding in the beginning of the video and old rail line? It seems so level and well built it could be an old rail line or even a road at one point in history.
@@lotsoffish yes! It’s a rail trail! At one point it was a rail road that bright timber down out of the mountains when they was logging the area
Snd yes bane, i will be coming up to ride the creeper trail. I will be supporting the town by shopping there. I love Damascus. I always get a tee shirt and a few beers. Ill bethere there after Christmas .and I'll do the group ride. Please let me know
Been following sense the cranberry snow trip thanks so much for what you are doing , I shared you last video to all my followers on FB and IG close to 20K , I’m some what local to Damascus bout 30min , it’s so devastating the damage , I just got done a week or so ago riding from the Maine border to southern va rising money for the Appalachia community’s teamed with ALDHA 2,000 total which was so amazing. I would be down for the group ride if I’m in the area , also let me know if you end up on the New river trail in the area it’s part of the Grayson gravel long haul it also has tons of damage but I’m 2miles from it in Draper VA
@@mischiefonthetrail8961 I biked the new river trail earlier this year when all I had to do was bipass the bridges they’ve don’t maintenance on. I just found out recently that it was damaged too. No plans currently, but I’ll likely come check it out soonish too. Thank you for following along and commenting, and more so for helping to raise awareness.
When you do your group ride next spring, I'm in.
Found your channel @3 months ago, what you are doing on the creeper is awesome!group ride would be fantastic! Bless you Mr Bane I like and I’m subscribed 😂🚴🏿♀️🚴🚴🏻♂️
@@keeperoftheflame4209 really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment, thank you!
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍
It’s definitely important to support any trail town, especially the one’s that were devistated. Looks like you went down hard on that bridge? Guess that’s the price you pay for quality content.
@@kmccarr yea, I landed hard on the bootie lol I control the drone with my right hand, and steer brake with the left…front brake * slick bridge = bad idea lol
Love the drone work and music, very relaxing.
@@bobhomer5008 thanks for watching! Trying to pick out the music is the hardest part
Good video and great message. Well done! Gotta love that slick wood 0:15 Ouch!
As a local resident & owner of The Bike Station in Damascus, MANY THANKS for your time and making people aware that we’re all still here, trying to hang on till next season. We would love to see you & as many riders as possible enjoy this beautiful trail ! DAMASCUS STRONG!! ❤
Hang in there guys
@@wendyrichardson5200 can you tell me if there are any campgrounds going to be opened this spring?
Hey, dude, when did you bike the green briar rail trail. Was it recently, and if so was the trail in decent shape. And it's got to be really cold out there
Sounds like a great idea! Keep us updated would love to join the ride
Thanks for spreading the word about the Virginia Creeper trail update. It's been about five years since i've been on the trail. I feel fortunate that I was able to do it at least five times from White Top to Damascus and twice from Damascus to Abington.
You’re a good man!! I’m in for a ride in March/April time!! Go Damascus 🙏🏻🚴🏽
I had reservations at a campground there in Damascus and had to cancel I was so devastated for everybody there . No answer now . I keep praying for them
Thank you Do you ever see incumbent trikes ? I ride an incumbent trike with an assist if I need it. I want to ride there so bad .
@@conniehoyle2669 yep, I’ve seen them!
No idea that part is open. Was set to come to Damascus back in October with my son but a medical issue got in the way. You let us know what time in the Spring and we will be there!
Why do I watch you, because you make biking fun and show lots of scenery. I'm 77 and my biking days are over for any distance so I video your.
@@bobhomer5008 thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Thank you so much!
I go up there and do over nighters a lot, and rode the creeper a few times. I'll keep it in mind to get up there and ride the 1st warmish day soon - and the group ride sounds neat too!
If I’m not mistaken, the Town of Abingdon maintains the trail from Abingdon to Alvarado. The little park there with the Gazebo in Alvarado is a Town of Abingdon park and allows camping. Then the town of Damascus maintains the trail from Alvarado into Damascus. So shout out to the town of Abingdon as well. The half you rode is usually the half I ride when I’m able to get away for the afternoon. That part has its history too when the tornado took out the trestle at the farm. Oh and the gates, I’ve come to learn how to stay on the bike when going through them. :)
@@chrislang7146 I tied to focus mainly on Damascus cause Damascus is actually dependent on the town, where as Abingdon isn’t. Damascus is in serious trouble without the trail, Abingdon won’t fail without it. (Especially since that side is open)
@@TheBane1979oh yeah I definitely understand. But it’s reassuring that Abingdon takes such pride on their part as well (politically speaking). :)
I see that the New River Trail is also partially closed from hurricane damage. Anybody know if the damage is as extensive as on the Creeper Trail?
@@rickhagen433 I can’t be as extensive, hopefully.
Count me in on the group ride plans !! Thank you for another fantastic video and for helping to spread the awareness of the damage done by Hurricane Helene this past September. I’m good with anytime for the group ride and will be there to show my support and to of course personally meet the RUclipsrs that inspire me to bikepack and ride the trails.
I have hiked some of that trail in the past, this is just awful to see. Will it ever be the same again?
I rode this a week before the storm, heartbreaking to see it now. I’ve been going up to Damascus to ride the Creeper and the mtb trails for thirty years. I hope I get to ride it again one of these days but I’m really not sure it will happen.
@@ostekuste3646 make sure you continue that tradition and bike the open section!
That is terrible ! That trail was such an amazing experience and peaceful
I took my son on a day trip up there in the 90s. So very devastating to see the destruction. This was not a natural disaster. Geo-engineered weather. Stay Damascus Strong!!!❤
My husband and I, along with two of our grandchildren, had a great trip visiting and biking the Virginia CreeperTrail. My husband and I have returned many times. This video broke my heart, and I was filled with raw emotion. The Virginia Creeper Trail is really special to us. So, we would like to volunteer to help out in cleaning the area. You can reach us at the email above.
@@annrlackey9615 if you check the description of the video, you’ll find info on helping!
From Kansas: We rode from upstream of Damascus and back just last year-were camping at Grayson Highland. We were wondering how the Creeper survived-clearly, it did not...how sad.
Thank you for this video. I was wondering about the trail conditions, and sadly, they are much worse than I imagined. I had just ridden the whole trail twice on a random Thursday and Friday in September of this year, and it was one of the best days I had ever experienced on a bicycle. I will definitely be back to ride what is rideable and support the community.
Bridges are always slicker. As a year round commuter its something you have to keep in mind. They'll have black ice quite often.
This is VERY sad! I think that the rebuilding will take a low priority given the road/bridge destruction in the area and at age 68 I really doubt if I will ever be able to ride it again? The whole rail to trail concept is based upon the existing railroad bridges and infrastructure and most of that is simply gone!
The section from Abingdon to Damascus is still open and rideable and it’s uniqueness on its on merit it you’d like to ride it
@@TheBane1979 I have cycled that section but truthfully it doesn't compare to the 17 mile Whitetop-Damascus section. Of course if I lived near there I would ride it but coming from Ohio It doesn't warrant the drive.
@@123gmor you could be right, but my assumption is the money to repair the trail is going to be coming from a different area and department than that for the bridge. When I was there a couple van loads of forest rangers was out assessing the damage, so it gives me some hope that it’s going to get done
@ you’re right, it doesn’t compare to the closed section, but it’s better than most rail trails. It would be a long haul, but other things could be planned to make it worth the time. I biked the greenbrier the day I before headed here. (I’m also from Ohio, but I’m as far south in Ohio as you can get)
@@TheBane1979 I'm in Cincinnati and live 3 miles from the Little Miami Trail and with all the trails in SW Ohio I really don't need to travel to ride nice trails. The section from WhiteTop to Damascus however was unique and worth the drive. I had actually planned to ride it again in September but didn't get around to it thinking of course that I could do it anytime in the future, very sad!
I have loved the Creeper Trail for years. This video is heartbreaking. I will be happy when they ask for donations to rebuild. Such travesty. It is still a beautiful place in my opinion. Gorgeous country. Love the Bike Station!
This makes me so sad! My family has many wonderful memories riding this trail 😢
One of my favorite places. 💔
A little voice over letting us know where your are while filming would have been helpful. I have several dozen pictures if anyone wants copies. Dating back to the mid 90’s
I partially avoided mentioning where I was, as I didn’t want to encourage any one else to feel encouraged to get there
And I Never Got To Check the Creeper Trail Out Before it got Destroyed....I Guess I waited Too Late Huh....People Around A Lot of East Tennessee Don't Realize Just How Much It Effected This Part of Southwest Virginia Too...Thanks For Posting this....I'm From Greene County Tennessee & Many of The Nolichucky River Banks & Bridges were Destroyed as Well As some Lives Lost & Many Homes.
I've always enjoyed riding mountain bike's and hopefully one day they will have all of these trails interconnected so one may ride around the country and never touch a highway. Bike's and regular traffic don't mix.
Just keep in mind while watching the video it’s been almost 3 months and most of the help has been from their fellow Americans but the politicians who represent the people on Capitol Hill think they deserve a 40% raise. Mind boggling isn’t it!!
I'm from Florida. I had a chance to ride the trail from Whitetop a few years ago. What a beautiful place! It's sad to see what's happened to the trail and the area. Thank you for posting this video documentation of the Virginia Creeper Trail.
A video that says it all! I can't recall how many times I was struck into silence and just mouthed the words, "OMG!" More than sad, tragic, apocalyptic. If the Damascus to Whitetop part of the trail is your livelihood, the economic impact must be near total right now. Good luck to us all. I hope it comes back, but it doesn't look good.
