- Bike touring the GAP
This is the second part of my trip, DC to Ohio. Previous video was of the C&O Canal.
The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile rail trail between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cumberland, Maryland. Together with the C&O Canal towpath, the GAP is part of a 335 mi route between Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.

This is one best Allegany Pass videos ever made! The drone footage is amazing and you don't see this in other videos! A must watch!

It’s so nice to see the sights you filmed from Cumberland up !! It was raining and foggy all day for me the day I rode both the up and the down to and from Cumberland.

I agree with the other comment about being one of the best GAP video’s on RUclips. Blue skies, along with a beautiful trail sure help with getting that quality content. I rode up that hill from Cumberland on my recumbent trike a few years back and took about 3 1/2 hours. Last year I did it the other direction on 2 wheels and prefer that ride down much more. I’d do the GAP every year but I grew up and played along that entire trail before there was a trail, so I’m a bit partial. Excellent job!
@@kmccarr it’s definitely one that’s on my list to ride again! Must have been pretty awesome running around the tracks before they converted it!
I grew up near McKeesport (when it was a little better than it is now😳), so seeing the entire valley from along the rivers is cool for me. All the other towns I would be around backpacking, camping or hunting back in the day. That entire trail will always be special to me, maybe because I’ve been gone so long. Again, really nice job on the video. Hope to catch up when you come to FL.

The beauty of doing the GAP is everyone’s adventure is different.. there’s no wrong way to do it 😁.. but you said you were frugal then get a hotel in Homestead.. you probably saw it.. you passed a nice Campsite in West Newton.. they also have a great restaurant called Gary’s Chuckwagon in West Newton.. awesome breakfast.. sounds like you got a hotel to do laundry 🧺.. look forward to seeing your journey home 🚴♂️🏡 .. hope you find some donuts 🍩🤪
@@billysbikesbrews7183 yea, I got a hotel on my 5th day. I apparently passed some laundry mats but didn’t realize it.
The room was definitely so I could do my laundry. I walked around the hotel in a towel washed every thing.
I’m in Ohio myself. I enjoy riding the Great Miami River Trail & the Little Miami Scenic Trail
@@lifeat10mph7 I’ve biked the little Miami scenic trail back during the last eclipse! We’re definitely spoiled with all the paved bike trails in Ohio!
WOW! So I didn't get out of Cumberland until almost noon that day. I was fixing a flat, cleaning up, and fixing things that morning. That hill was KILLER. It was the closest I got to quitting that whole trip. I had done 93 miles the day before and had to go up that mountain on the sunniest part of the day. I WANTED TO CRY. I only ended up doing 32 miles on that Monday and stopped off at Maple Festival Campground in Meyersdale just before dark. That stupid mountain ate up most of day four of the trip for me. But I made it! And so did you! Tuesday was a chilly morning AND was my second biggest day of the trip to Pittsburgh. I rode 90 miles that day from Meyersdale to Dravo Cemetery campground. I took the cheap route and camped there because it was the last free campsite before Pittsburgh. So on the final day (day 6, Wednesday) I started my day at 3:30am! I rode all through the morning for 26 more miles and got to Pittsburgh as the sun came up around 6:30am. I then boarded a train back to DC at 7:30am. It seems like you got into Pittsburgh sometime between 9am and noon? Crazy how we were on the same trails for 6 days and had completely different trips! Not that it was a race, but it seems you beat me on DC to Cumberland by just a handful of hours and that I beat you Cumberland to Pittsburgh by just a handful of hours! I guess that means we need a tiebreaker ;)
Anyway, great meeting you on the trail. Watching your videos was such a fun way to relive the trip. It was neat to compare my progress against someone else who was out at the exact same time. Seemed like you were always 10-30 miles ahead of me depending on the day! WHAT A FUN TRIP!

How was the train ride home with the bike?
@@TheBane1979 Super easy actually! The loading in Pittsburgh was better than the transfer I had to do in Philly, but we pulled it off with no issues!
From Wheeling, I ride the Panhandle/Montour trail, along with the Brooke Pioneer/Heritage trails all the time. I hope you do the "ride home" from PA again. You will ride right past my childhood home on the Heritage trail. Those damn trains woke me all the time as a kid. I do coffee every mornin, along with preworkout powders and protein shakes later in the day. You're not babling at all, your commentary adds to the video. If I had known your dates and times, I would of rode along with you while in the northern panhandle area. The flag recovery was awesome. The bike shop guy in PA, typical of a shitsburg person. If you needed to stop for anything bike related while in wheeling, my boys at Wheelcraft (Andrew) would fix you up with anything you need. Looking forward to the next 300 miles!

Great video with Quality Content! Nice commentary without too much blabbing. The spectacular drone footage and the various angles are first-class! Thank you for sharing views that can't be seen from the saddle. You were knocking on the door of the SNG (guy or gal) Hall of Fame when you stopped for the flag! What I want to know is do you still have your Crocs? Safe travels back home! We'll be following along. On we go!

Awesome videos! Ricky from Lawrenceville, GA. Have you rode the Erie Canal Path? Last year four of us rode from Niagara Falls, to Buffalo, to Albany and then to New York City. 630 miles over 10 days of riding. Absolutely beautiful!!!

Great video! Not sure if you have ever biked the Natchez Trace? I definitely recommend! We had an amazing time on that one!
We will be in Southern Ohio this weekend riding the TOSRV route from Columbus to Portsmouth and back again. This is a great ride also!

I am from Connecticut. The trails here are mediocre at best. I think you should come ride the Cape Cod Trail and while you are at it, ride the Shining Sea Trail and the Cape Cod Canal Trail, too. Love your stuff, Bane. You and Bryan should get together and ride - that would be fun!!

@@Ev3_6 I get asked about the camp stuff a bit. I tried to get more camp stuff on my last trip but I ran out of time, and it rained/snowed on me.
I got stuff coming of my bike set up, the differences between the Arkel and Ortlieb bags that I have, and stuff on what I’m wearing.
I’ll get more camp stuff out, even if I have to just go out and set up camp just for the info!

@@vicelse8980 from Pittsburgh, take the panhandle trail over to Weirton WV. From there you can cross the Ohio River and ride rt 7 south.

I did a round trip to Chicago, all pavement except surprisingly, some state roads in Indiana which are still gravel in some areas and two to St. L on US 40. Very little traffic as I-70 parallels it. The fun part is it goes thru all the little towns. All in the late '80's.
I found SE OH to be some of the best road riding in the US.
Did you go into town while at the Outflow Campground in Confluence? Last time I rode through, they had a laundromat. Confluence is probably my favorite trail town along the GAP. Did your tent get pine sap on it from camping underneath the tree?
@@chrislang7146 nope and nope. I hadn’t checked for the laundry mat so I didn’t go in town. No issues with sap luckily.
@@TheBane1979 confluence is a slow paced town. Has a little town square with a picturesque gazebo. Stuff that you’d see in Hallmark movies. It’s been a few years since being in confluence , so I’m not sure if they are still in business, but they have a little mom and pop diner, library and bicycle shop. Plus not too far from the campground up the main road, there was a little road side shop that makes good hamburgers and ice cream. Plus some swimming on the other side of the dam. Sure it was too cold when you went through though. You did some big daily mileage though. Oh and forgot, confluence even had a Dollar General.
Oh and to answer some of your questions, I live in NE TN. Before then, lived in north central WV and also Maryland. Been riding since the early 80’s. I think my favorite trail ive ridden is Kokosing Gap Trail.

@@princepage632 I’m a veteran service representative. I work in the process of claims for service related disability. I don’t get to pick my hours, but I work 4 days a week, get all fed holidays off (which makes for 4 day weekends) and I basically only use vacation hours for these trips

How do you secure your belongings overnight? Or do you not?
@@steven-np8wd my electronics come in the tent or hammock with me, I run a bike cable through the frame and peddle of the bike and I have a thin cable I made that attaches to the and comes in my tent or hammock as well. Any one stealing the bike would have to carry it, moving it would pull my cable to alert me. (At least that’s my assumption). The cable won’t stop a determined thief, but I think it would be enough to wake me up if they tried to remove it. It’s also actually hard to see the cable when it’s dark, I’m just assuming I’ll wake up lol

@@TheBane1979 my bags are10lbs each in the rear , and about 7 each in the front. i am loaded with about 34 lbs total
