When you look deeper into both series, there aren't that many similarities BUT on the purely surface level, both Sun Eater and Red Rising are very similar. They both have extremely badass male protagonists narrating their tale in first person in an epic Greco-Roman inspired space setting. But other than that, they're pretty disimilar. But you have to keep in mind, that surface level comparison is what makes a lot of fans on one series pick up the other. I love both series but for completely different reasons. Red Rising is fun, cheesy and full of action while Sun Eater is a lot more introspective, philosophical and much deeper. It sucks that fans of one series tend to shit on the other so much. In terms of prose, Sun Eater is much stronger but I think Red Rising's prose is very underrated. It is so personal and visceral. I personally like the side characters in Red Rising a lot more than I did in Sun Eater and I think Pierce Brown is much better at epic grandscale action which I'm pretty sure I have heard Chris admit he is weak at. but I don't think I have read a protagonist in fiction quite as compelling as Hadrian Marlowe.

Please, please.. stop putting snow crash on cyberpunk lists. Snow Crash isn't cyberpunk, it's nonsensical satire that makes FUN of the whole concept. It's written by a man that looks down on cyberpunk and can't stand the idea that his most popular book is snow crash. I don't understand why so many people don't seem to get it.. it's so obvious from reading the book. I remember being super hyped for snow crash, almost buying that very beautiful hardcover/deluxe/anniversary edition. But deciding to try reading it on my ereader first. Boy was I glad that I did. It immediately became clear to me that this was a satire. It wasn't a serious cyberpunk book. It made fun of the genre and took something that's already pretty over the top and pushed it to 11. I also just really disliked it. Looked up the writer and some interviews and it was painful how much he seems to hate the whole idea of cyberpunk and how much he hates that snow crash is his most famous book. DNF'd it and I don't understand why it's on cyberpunk lists since you'd expect books on these lists to be actual cyberpunk books that appreciate the genre, not that satirize it. Like, it makes no sense to make a greatest fantasy books list then put a book on there that is clearly making fun of fantasy by a writer that looks down on it. P.s. I wish that easton press was available outside of the US. Their FAQ claims they've shipped to "collectors in 130 countries" but when you go to checkout the first thing they expect you to give is a US postal code. It's very disappointing since they seem to make some of the prettiest truly leatherbound books out there. EDIT: Do androids dream is also not cyberpunk. The movie is cyberpunk. Because that's what cyberpunk is, it's that late 70's to early 90's sci fi aesthetic, reaching it's height in the 80's. It's a corpo dystopia with a very particular punk aesthetic. Without it, it's not cyberpunk. There is modern cyberpunk, but there is very little. Takeshi Kovac is a a very successful example of modern cyberpunk for example. But there is really very little cyberpunk literature out there. That's why these lists are generally mostly non cyberpunk

Neuromancer was such a hard follow for me because i felt like so many times the author just expects you to connect the dots. There are parts especially following molly where i got super lost and had to go back over it time and time again to see where i messed up or what i could have missed. Fun story though and once i got the hang of it the later half of the book really came to play.

I am lucky to have been completely vilified for some of my early work. I have one Amazon review, a one star hate review from a local who never even read the book. I was mad at first. I got over it, and I count myself lucky for those bad experiences giving me the thick skin I have now. The only reviews I don't want now are the three star ones. One star and five stars I will welcome both equally. But that's what you get when you write satire in 2024. Satire!

Sir, right off the bat you are telling me you've only read 10 indie books lol. I appreciate being included on the list and I hope my next book only improves your view of my work (the next two novellas are being rolled into a single novel as well). The one after this series is going to be a cozy fantasy, so it's heartening to know I'm able to pull it off when I wasn't purposefully going that route when I set out writing it. I'm currently reading Sealed Empire (bought it due to your interview with him). It's such an interesting world and I can't wait to hit that transition from medieval to sci-fi. The medieval setting is done so well that I can't believe it's going to make that turn. I haven't gotten to the other books yet, but they have been purchased or are on the list! So many awesome covers and inticing worlds to dive into! I will be starting Wistful Ascending after I finish up Suneater, hopefully in the next couple of months. If I could offer up another indie Sci-fi to put in your TBR, Vermilion Flames by Adam Fernandez. It's another post Earth setting where humanity has colozined other planets in our solar system. I loved the characters, plot, and the prose is great. There are several times I had to stop and admire how well something was phrased. The audiobook was amazingly well done as well.
