The MBTA's Latest Experiment | Boston Railroading Explained Ep 4
I wonder why MBTA never decided to just extend the Red Line over this route. I LOVE the trolleys but that would save passengers from having to change.
So that's why I'm seeing Train tracks while I'm on the Number 1 heading to Harvard
Its speed seemed to be 120 MPH.
Not from Boston but I have seen a train go across the bu bridge in person when I was in Boston in 2022. It was some sort of maintenance train thing idk. I was there for a month and that was the only time I saw anything on that bridge.
Just had my first encounter of the Readville Switcher zooming by Lansdowne to the shock of bemused out-of-towers! It instantly reminded me of this video and I had to explain to them that it was the old shunter!
@@rosarioyeen1371 hey cool!! Its always such a fun train to see
Cyclists hate flex posts.
“see u out there in the high iron”
1990 driving pike west after work that yard would gleam with rail cars in the afternoon sun.
It would be interesting to see if you can get a tour of the train shed at the Alewife station.
Nice video
I'm ready for you to dontge E line and when you do please talk about why it stop going to forest hill.
It was very busy under Conrail with several CV trains per day (TOFC Trains)
that’s average speed…
7:57 miles spotted lol
Who won? Love the video❤❤
I remember when Beacon Park was busy with intermodal traffic in the early 00's. We used to throw beer cans in the passing GM's from late night allston backyard parties. Cool theres traffic but what a shell of what it used to be.
I remember those days as well.
Lovely video! Just last night I saw one of those Amtrak cars that are single level that run in the Midwest at north station. There was also a 50 year anniversary locomotive.
If you caught on, there was a F40PH Downeaster heritage unit.
This is the best video thank you so much
MBTA Commuter Rail vs. Amtrak MBTA vs. Amtrak (Which train will race to North Station first?) 3:25 Amtrak Lose! Amtrak Downeaster Lose! MBTA Commuter Rail Won! MBTA Wins!! 3:38
Didn’t realize we had freight service here in Gloucester! Wish we still did!
Hey great video! Also do you know or have heard anything on the recent move of MBTA 904?
Yea its heading up to NHN as far as I know. I wasnt able to see any of the moves sadly, too busy
I used to live on Cambridge Street right by this yard.
i like the shoutout
I was hoping you would notice
When I was a young boy of 6. My dad took me to Fenway and we were on the Mass pike and I saw the old Beacon Yard. And it was the Penn Central back then. And if you watch the Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen. You can see the same yard as it was back then. and it was very busy too, I hope one day you go to Kornwesthiem Germany, To the Classfication Yard. Where my mother's dad worked at. My grandfather he went all over Gemany pre-war and post war. And some of the units he drove are still running and working hard too.
I live in Connecticut, drove the Mass Pike to Lowell in summer 2023 for an internship, and took the train into Boston from Worcester twice... I got lucky in that I avoided the worse summer traffic volume. But suffice to say, three lanes on the pike, 290, and 495 got backed up from time to time. Very inconvenient, risky, and not a good use of taxpayer money when crashes, impaired driving, and congestion are the results. They really need to turn this yard into a transportation hub. Preferably an auto train hub so that the surrounding highways and roadways are relieved of some congestion. Are there tracks from the yard to the ones used by North Station? Is this yard the solution to creating a true Washington DC to Maine Amtrak route? If not, then make it another transportation for trains and busses that aims to provide commuters and travelers another means of entering and exiting the city. Fewer cars = less impaired driving, crashes, safer roadways, etc.
nice catch. Thank you for sharing this.
Love your videos. Speaking of the old Allston Depot, that should definitely be re opened as a train station...?!...quick ride from Allston to Back Bay and South Station
They almost did put one there! The work to add a station serving the area ended up being what lead to us getting Boston Landing station. I feel like an additional stop at Allston Depot would be a good idea if and when the line is ever electrified.
@@pokemonred2005 Yes..but I think the Allston depot (later pizzeria Regina) was originally built as a train depot. Why not reopen that and provide another option to get from Allston to downtown Boston..
Was this a former NYC/Boston and Albany Yard?
Nice video.
What a great job on the video . Thank you. Looking forward to more of your adventures.
Thanks for sharing
Fantastic and informative video! Thanks so much for documenting this. As a former Lower Allston and Brighton resident & railfan, I’m excited to see Beacon Park getting use again. I used to watch trains there all the time in the 90s and early 2000s. I was frequently at that intersection of Cambridge and Linden, the west end of the yard where you were. Really have been enjoying your videos, keep up the great work!
Allston depot would be better known to locals as “The Sports Depot”
Less rail yards means more trucks on the streets.
I thought that land was to be used by a university, or like that. So the RR got kicked out, or moved--- so that it can resume rail use??????????
I miss going to Regina in the old historic passenger station and watching freight trains 6 feet from the window..
Worked that yard many times out of Springfield..
9:57 I was riding on the Worcester local #519 and wondered why we were outbound on track 5 instead of track 7 and why we passed two engines that were on track 7 at that point. Thanks for posting this since it cleared that mystery up. 😊
Thanks for documenting this. Please keep us updated.
The concrete pad that those dirty dirt cars sit on used to be a small intermodal yard before CSX moved that operation to Worcester ma and combined that operation after CSX expanded that yard in 2012.
Cool video! (also, yellow Lamborghini sighting at 7:42 on the right heading down the Pike)
Didnt know I captured a cool car as well! Nice
This the springfield Mass Albany NY Line. Thur The Berkshires October Mountain.
Great video. Thank you for your efforts.
Glad you enjoy!
@@BostonByRails Is there a 1,2,3? Can't find them.
Interesting to see how at 7:00 your camera suddenly starts to match the pulse-width modulation of the headlights (or did they turn up the brightness?)
Yes they brightened the headlights
“dirty dirt” is a fun phrase
Isnt it?!!
