Ayer: The Home of Boston's Freight Rail Yard, 35 Miles West | What Remains Ep 3

- With Boston's lack of freight rail, one may wonder, does freight rail serve Boston at all? Well, Ayer Massachusetts, a town 35 miles northwest of the city holds one of Boston's freight yards. Cars are shipped here from as far west as Chicago, Illinois, and as far north as Maine.
Enjoy!

the way NS & CSX work in Ayer is a function of NS forming a joint venture with PanAm years ago where they bought 50% of the joint venture PanAm Southern that gave them rights and ownership in the tracks where they connected in Mechanicsville NY all the way to Ayer and other lines along the way. CSX acquired PamAm a couple of years ago and with that deal owns 50% of PamAm Southern which NS wanted someone else to manage so CSX would not just move traffic away from the joint venture over to their 100% owned tracks that run from ME through Ayer and over to Worcester out to Selkirk yard
The infrastructure is/was there. Makes absolutely zero sense to put trucks on the road from Ayer and Worcester. I understand some will talk about the low clearance bridges, but that could be easily remedied in 2024.
Wow, I had no idea this yard existed, love to see it in good heath as well. (Also loved that train crew)
I really think Boston should’ve kept the freight yards in or around Boston. The amount of intermodal trucks on summer street all day and every day is pretty bonkers
loved your video today. I live near Ayer/Shirley and found this info very informative and I know where the trains are going to and coming from. Keep up the great posts!!!

I've been to Ayer station a few times to ride on the Nashua river rail trail. And I've seen the big freight yard from satellite view maps
You should make a video of Worcester Massachusetts 2 freight train companies yards
That engineer at 9:32 got me, hilarious
I was waiting for thit
I miss the days of multiple intermodal freight trains coming through my hometown back when Beacon Park Yard was still in operation. Great video!
It's still sitting there doing nothing, Harvard hasn't done anything. They should just bring it back!!
Where is it
Right along the mass pike in the northbound lane after the Allston overpass, you can't miss it! ;-) @@briansaxby5357
Thanks!
Allston, MA
Thats an EKYRail E bell. I don't know why its mounted on a dash 9.
Awesome Vid! This will definitely get me motivated to see Ayer!!
Nice video. Some editing feedback, any text on screen, you want it to stay up long enough to read everything twice.
A lot of people don’t realize that Boston is actually quite small. A lot of the infrastructure the city relies on is out in the suburbs.

Cool video. Csx has a small yard in Boston city limits at Readville as well
As a westford resident , I had no clue that m427 made that type of move, I noticed lately more trains in the town but I never knew it was possible may cause of this
There was a CSX yard right by Storrow Drive until a few years ago. Not really sure why they ripped it up.
Its like beacon park got sold for corporate greed or something....
2:21 uhm sir your marker lights
very interesting
Boston does have s small yard but not used much irs mostly for locals
I'm a local from the area so its cool to see a video on Ayer. Also find it kinda funny seeing CSX using dash 8s that are formerly MEC/PanAm but then also formerly CSX (the local engine and the middle engine in the set for M427). CSX had sold the engines to PanAm a while back, then before they were repainted, CSX just bought the whole railroad and so now the patched engines are back in CSX's roster and results in this weird image of a CSX locomotive having its logos patched over despite being owned by CSX.
Glad you enjoy! And i know, its so funny the way csx got those locos back 😂
I’m sure they didn’t want them and they won’t be around for too long!
Cool, I run these tracks all the time. Looks like you got a great day.
You should check out east Deerfield too
I remember i was out on the same day but we somehow kept missing each other
Is the Ayer Tower manner?
By your channel is interesting I like it you popped up in my inbox feeds so I watched a video and learn something it wasn't very educational I enjoyed. How often do you put videos out? You go to different yards or just stay at one.
Im glad you enjoyed! I put videos out ever 2 weeks on sunday. I mainly film in the boston area, but sometimes my adventures take me out of state, or even country!
the guy with a traffic cone on his head lmfao
9:33 YEEEEEEEEAAAAAHOOOOOOO
Doesn't Worcester yard also serve Boston?
it does indeed! I plan on making a video about that, that I will add to the series later on, however I havent been there in quite a while
@@BostonByRails that sounds interesting. I'll be watching for that video.
i think 264 and 265 will have trackage rights once the connector from richmondville to voorhesville ny is in place ,csx now berkshire and eastern will take it east from mechanicville til then
that is the place i all has watch the MBTA and freight
coolest engineer ever!!! :D
This was great
the horrors of may 29th 2023
What’s wrong bout it?
6:31 :O
FYI, Ayer is locally pronounced "Air," with one syllable.
Oh dear! Let everyone in ayer who watches this video know that I am truly and humbly sorry!! As a new englander, I should know better than to assume to prononciation of a city name 😂
8:18 no one’s gonna mention the NSX?
