Bits & Pieces Quilting
Канада
Добавлен 14 апр 2019
My name is Michelle and I have been a maker and creator for as long as I can remember. Inspired and taught by my mom, I learned to knit, crochet and sew at an early age. My mom was always sewing and I grew up in the heart of southern Ontario Mennonite country, so quilts were everywhere. I started by hand quilting whole cloth quilts and eventually moved to machine piecing and quilting.
Today, quilting is my passion, creative outlet and stress management strategy. I love the play of colour, design and texture in quilts. Scrap quilts with their variety of colour and fabrics are my favourite and the inspiration for Bits & Pieces.
Visit my website at www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com, follow me on Instagram at: bitspiecesquilt, subscribe to my RUclips channel and send me your thoughts and ideas for additional content.
Enjoy the process and make the most of your fabric bits and pieces. Happy Quilting!

Mathemagical - A scrap-friendly free quilt tutorial
Grab some scraps and let’s make the Mathemagical quilt! This is scrap-friendly and fat-quarter-friendly. It would be an amazing way to showcase a specific theme, or a line of coordinating fabric. I’ve made this pattern using Star Wars fabrics and Harry Potter fabrics and it looks great.

Faux Cathedral Windows - Easier than it looks! Free quilt tutorial

This is a fabulous quilt that takes a traditional cathedral windows design and simplifies it. The impact of the circles across this quilt is impressive. I’ve also added secondary windows for an even greater impact. This takes a bit of planning and some attention to detail, but the effort is worth it. I’ve also adapted the approach to make an even easier version which will be available on my web...

I’m a USNavy veteran. I made my own quilt of valor. I have mine hanging in my foyer!
What is the measurement for your borders?❤
Beautiful job, a cathedral window is on my bucket list. My Tante Nanny taught me to do needlepoint and she said the back should look almost as good as the front. With all the seams pressed open, it looks great, thanks for bringing back that memory from 50 years ago.
This is the pattern I have been waiting for to use up my fat quarters! Thank you!
This is a great quilt pattern as it shows off the fabric. I have recently acquired some magical Norwegian Forest fabric by Arne and Carlos for Lewis and Irene Fabrics and have been hunting for a great pattern that focuses on the fabric rather than the pattern. I think I've found it so thank you.
What amazing quilts. Those racoons put a smile on my face, will be a wonderful gift to a cancer patient. Thank you for making these amazing quilts and gifting them. Everyone needs to have a hug from a quilt, to make their day/night a little brighter. You do amazing work, and your instructions are so detailed, thank you.
Wow! What a great tutorial. Its a beautiful quilt.
A beautiful quilt - excellent tutorial - thank you 🤩now subbed
Thanks so much for the fantastic video and pattern!
Michelle, I LOVE this quilt. I'm about to make a cat quilt for a friend--twin size--and this will make the perfect--well, purr-fect--backing for the quilt. (I plan to piece cats for the top, so it will be two-sided.) I have TONS of cat fabric that's starched and ready to cut up and I'm so glad I saw this before I started cutting. I'll have to decide about directional fabric--whether I don't want to worry about it or have all the cats upright, but I can look at that as I cut stuff out before I put the "grout" on. These are excellent instructions and JUST what I needed to get out to the studio and get started! It's supposed to be a Christmas present, so I need to get moving. Thank you so much! I've downloaded the FREE pattern. Thank you!
nice. Thanks for sharing such a video. I've been thinking about different motifs I might be able to do on a quilt/quilts I'm about to quilt.
Awesome job!!! Love it
Thank you so much for this video. It makes making scrap quilts so much easier. I love the process. You are genius.
Yes, I would be interested in the pattern you said you could right using the bordered 5" centers. I live in Alabama and have made many QOV tops that a friend has quilted for QOV US.
Beautiful technique...I maybe trying this on a pillow, table runner, or PURSE PANEL. It's too challenging for me on a quilt at my age, 😆❤❤❤, Michelle's great teaching! 🎉
❤️❤️🫂 this quilt pattern. I have many fat quarters I need to use. Thank you!😊
This is such an enjoyable way to quilt... you have made it so easy for us that are new and old to sewing. My problem was that I kept dreaming of purses to make with all that fabric and even the scraps, LOL. Therefore, I had to watched several times and then sent it to my sisters. Love your videos and appreciate your boo, boo's. Mistakes are how we learn 💯 ❤😊THANKS FOR SHARING
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. One of my daughters and I have decided to collarate on some quilts. She does beautiful embroidery by hand, and I quilt. These 8.5 inch pieces would be perfect for show casing her work. Thank you for the tutorial also, it is very useful.
What a wonderful idea Virginia! I get to collaborate with my mom from time-to-time and it is a real gift to be able to share my passion with her. Thanks for watching.
Love this. Great pattern. I looked on your website and loved all of the quilts you made in this pattern.
Thanks Eileen! It is really versatile and would suit a lot of different fabric themes. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.
I can’t wait to make this! I’ll be retiring early at 64. Can money be made selling quilts?
Oh Cindy... Don't even start that debate!!! 🤣 Make them because you love to make them and give them to those you love. That will ensure it remains your hobby and not another job!! Thanks for watching.
❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing! Your quilt is beautiful!
Thanks Kathy! This is one of my all time favourite scrappy patterns and I've made a ton of them with different fabric themes. Thanks for watching.
What a great tutorial. Very detailed and totally understandable. Thanks so much for sharing. Looking forward to trying this one.
Thanks so much Debbie! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Great video! I'm hoping to do an 'I Spy mathematmgical quilt!
That sounds like tons of fun! I'm sure whoever gets to play I Spy will love it! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing. ❤
I couldn’t find this pattern on your website. What am I doing wrong?

One more pattern into my to-do list! Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial and the pattern. I enjoy making quilts to donate. This looks like such fun, but not too difficult. Yay!
Hi Priscilla - It is fun and easy! I hope you dig into your scraps and give it a try. Thanks for watching.
Wow!!
Thanks Lyn! A bit of work, but totally worth it!
Lovely! Thank you for all the math! This should help put a dent in my mount scrape more! ❤
Thanks Kathy! Dig into those scraps and get started!! It's a fun and easy project. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant!! xxx
Thanks Alexandra!!

Great instructions! Also want to tell you that I loved looking at your website - wonderful!
Thanks so much Eleanor! That's so kind of you to say. I hope you will give or some of my other patterns a try.
Oh Michelle... I love the work you do and the creative ideas you have. I've been wanting to try this particular block for a while, but never trusted myself to get the illusion right. Your clear instructions have inspired me to finally give it a try! Thank you so much for sharing...❤
Hi Brigah! I hope you give this a try! I have complete faith in you. Take your time and enjoy the process. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video, and pattern. I'm in the process of sorting my DC and Marvel fabrics for my "comic " book quilts. Can't wait to get started on this project. Thanks again!
Hi John..... I'm so curious.... will you mix the Marvel and DC universes?? Is that allowed or strictly forbidden? 🤣😉 I hope you enjoy making these projects, because I suspect you are headed towards 2 quilts! Thanks for watching.
@@bitspiecesquilting Am I that transparent? With comic quilt 3, there will be mixed universes. I will have many extra blocks cut. Thanks for the idea.
Thank you first time watching.
Hi Donna and welcome! I hope you find other interesting videos on my channel (and more free patterns on my website)! Thanks for watching.
Love this!
Thanks Freddie! I hope you will give it a try.
@@bitspiecesquilting I definitely want to! :) It's on my list of patterns I want to try.
I remember playing with my grandmother and great-grandmother's old wooden spools. They were like blocks, but stacked into columns. I bet some of them were from the 20s and 30s.
Oh wow - what a great memory! And you clearly come from a long line of crafters and makers! Thanks for sharing Joshua.
What a great tutorial love fabulous job! Thank you
Thanks Lynn! Thanks for watching.
I LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing ❤
Thanks Linda! I hope you give it a try.
I love this pattern! Your quilts are beautiful! I have been wanting to know how to make a quilt like Mathemagical for a long time!😀
Hi Gletha! I hope you dive in and give this a try. Be sure to download the free pattern. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Michelle, what a fabulous quilt! So kind and generous of you to share this with us especially free. You have certainly put a lot of time into it. I have pre quilt also, haveny used it too much except for my hundred day, hundred blocks quilt; but I will definitely use my fabrics to try layouts for this Mathemagical quilt. You are amazing, so glad I found you through Brenda’s Mount Scrapmore.
Thanks G!! I really appreciate your kind words and support. Brenda has been a great inspiration! Thanks for watching.
Quilting newbie, you do make it look easy. I have a box of my mom’s cut fabric. I need help. That is why I watch.
You can do this Evelyn! This is a great pattern to use larger scraps. And you should check out my video and pattern for the scrappy four-patch trellis quilt - it uses A LOT of small pieces. Dig in and get started - I have faith in you!
@@bitspiecesquilting Thanks, I will. My mom was a great quilter. Not great at color selection but I think this pattern would make her selections look better. thanks again
Brilliant! Well done video of an exciting pattern. Thank you.
Thanks Pat! I appreciate the support.
Thank you for the pattern and instructions! Beginner quilting wish me luck😁♥️
You've got this Lydia! You can do it. Be sure to download the free pattern, take your time and enjoy the process.
Can you QAYG on this sections beginning quilting
Hi Lydia - I'm not really sure how I would approach this as quilt as you go.... You could maybe do a small section as a table runner with this technique, but I can't really imagine how to do the whole quilt. 🤷♀️
I wish I could give this a hundred thumbs up! I've been keeping an eye out for a quilt for my bed and I think I found it here! Love, love, love it! Thanks so much!
That's so exciting Wendy! Do you have a theme, or a fabric collection in mind? I'm glad this turned up at the right time for you. Thanks for watching.
@@bitspiecesquilting I'm thinking gray "grout" and some aqua squares and rectangles. Maybe a two color quilt? Or maybe a mostly aqua fabric line with a few other colors? I'll know it when I see it!
Sounds like your vision is coming together!!
This is amazing and soooo beautiful ❤️❤️ thank you for sharing this
Thanks Elaine! It is a super fun set of templates and I've enjoyed working with them.
A very clever way of making a flexible design! Those Tula Pink fabrics are so beautiful!
Thanks Future Cat!
What size are the black ones ?? You gave the length dimension but what is the width of them ? Wanting to make one of these with my scraps but can't figure it out
Hi Elaine - the free pattern is on my website with all the dimensions. The border pieces are 1.5 inches wide. You will need pieces that are 4 inches, 5 inches, 8.5 inches and 9.5 inches long. Thanks for watching.
This was a good way to use up these fabrics. That left them large enough to enjoy their designs.
Thanks Becky! That was the reason for the original design - I really wanted large pieces to show off the fabric. I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
I have a question. Could a layer cake be used for this as well? I have a couple of layer cakes that have some beautiful large prints and then many smaller coordinating prints. I hate to cut the larger pieces because I’m afraid I will lose the beauty of those prints. So wondering if those could be used as larger pieces with the smaller prints cut into the smaller units, if that makes sense? Great video! Thanks so much!
Hi Mindy. You can definitely use a layer cake, but just be aware of the amount that will be left over. Most layer cakes are 10x10. The largest pieces in this project are 8.5x8.5, so you will have 1.5 inches off each side of each layer cake piece as extra. Then the rectangles and squares are 4x8.5 and 4x4. You will have some additional pieces (2 inches and 1.5 inches) left over from your layer cake squares. There are lots of things you can do with these left over pieces, so if you decided to use your layer cakes, be sure the save them!!
@@bitspiecesquilting I’m honestly not as worried about that little bit of waste as I am about cutting up the larger patterns. Vivid by Jason Yenter. Just. So. Pretty!!!😍 Thanks for confirming that it is doable!
Just googled the collection - Oh WOW!! Really beautiful. Might be fun to pick your favourite bright colour and use that for the border fabric to make it really pop.
