I was hooked on Fat Quarters, as they are my most favorite to collect. Even before you said what was needed for background I pulled out a 10 FQ bundle of Unicorns. cute cute cute ! I make many baby quilt tops for charity and tis is going in next, Thanks Michele. I will make the reg size just for time sake,
Hi Carylanne! I'm so glad you like this. And I'm sure the organizations that you sew for really appreciate the baby quilts! What a wonderful contribution to your community. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Elizabeth! The smaller ones are my favourite too. But with 48 of the larger blocks, you would get the same impact and a bigger quilt! Worth considering.....! Thanks for watching.
Hi Benette - that's my view, exactly! 48 smaller blocks make a great baby quilt and 48 larger blocks make a great size for an adult. Thanks for watching and I hope you give this a try.
Hi Amy - it really is fairly quick and easy to put together, especially if you are making a baby quilt. With only 20 blocks in the larger size, it is quick. It takes a bit longer to make the 48 blocks for the smaller size block, but totally worth it! Thanks for watching.
I love how you have reversed the Irish chain to have predominantly blue. So effective. And the smaller chain quilt is gorgeous. Thanks so much for this idea.
Thanks so much Mary Jane! And welcome! I hope you find other fun and interesting videos. And don't forget the free patterns on my website. Thanks for watching.
I just went to your site for the pattern, I LOVE the small one that is in all different colors, I will copy that idea for sure. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Sara! My dad always said to measure twice and cut once! If you are trying to squeeze out as many blocks as possible, it's important to measure first. Thanks for watching.
Hi Shannon - it's my favourite too! In the future, I'll use the larger size block to make an adult-sized quilt, and keep making the smaller blocks for baby quilts. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Cynthia! Another viewer just suggested even smaller!! Not sure how I feel about that. But the larger blocks are perfectly manageable, I think. Thanks for watching.
Hi Jammie - I agree! I think 48 blocks is the perfect number for the chain pattern. 48 of the smaller block makes a great baby quilt and 48 of the larger block makes a great adult quilt. Thanks for watching.
I made this reverse Irish Chain using 2 & 1/2” cuts for the four patch. Then 4 & 1/2” square for the next pieces & finished with 4 & 1/2” by 8 1/2” for the final big pieces. Finished to 12 & 1/2”. I’m making this into a king-size quilt.
That sounds amazing Carlene! I think through all the comments and input, most of us have concluded that the right sized block should be used for the right sized quilt... the small size for a baby quilt, the medium size (from my video) for a mid-sized adult quilt like a throw or a double, and perhaps the large size, as you've calculated for a large quilt like a king! I'm sure it will look amazing. Thanks for watching.
Hi Denise - linen would look so sophisticated, I think. And I love Cathy's work at CatBird. She has that sophisticated look in her projects. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much Jean! I think the smaller blocks are my favourite too, but I really thought working with such small pieces would be more trouble than they are worth. But I loved the result. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Jennifer. I'm really glad I decided to try the smaller size. I was worried it would be too fussy, but I think it's actually my favourite, especially for a baby quilt.
Thanks Vicki! I've learned the hard way to measure first (or measure twice and cut once - as Dad always used to say). And even then, with my "design as I go" process, I often end up a bit short and have to figure out how to deal. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing your creative brain and the pattern you created. I have a fat quarter bundle of most lights and will use a complimentary solid for the chain. Your videos are a pleasure to watch and learn!
Another good one Michelle. I particularly like the smaller version, it’d be great for lots of scrappy pieces as they would all ‘mush’ (technical term!) together. Also love the new hair cut!
Hi Alison! At first I thought the smaller one would be a bit nuts - that the pieces would be too small to work with effectively, but once I started, I had the same kind of moment! And I'm glad I tried it. The smaller one is now my favourite. Thanks for watching.
Hi Marlene! Looking back on it now, I think I'll stick to the small size for baby quilts (with 48 blocks) and use the larger size, also with 48 blocks, for adult-sized quilts. Thanks for watching.
I love an Irish chain. This is a fresh take on it and would make a great scrap buster. Thank you. Both size are wonderful since I cut my scraps in all sizes from 1 1/2 inches to 5 inches in half inch increments. I have lots of 2 and 3 1/2 cuts as well as 1 1/2 and 2 1/2.
Hi Tammy! Sounds like it's time to dig into the scrap drawers! After making both of these, I think I'll stick to 48 blocks - 48 of the smaller ones for a baby quilt and 48 of the larger ones for an adult quilt. They seemed scaled appropriately like this. It was a good experiment! Thanks for watching.
Hi Linda - definitely give the smaller size block a try!! The four-patch blocks use 1.5 inch pieces and the rest are 2.5 inch pieces. Totally worth it!
Hi Michelle! I really love both quilts. And my preferred look for a design like this is reversed, so you've made them just as I would. I get bored with quilts that have a lot of white background. I'm definitely getting your pattern and heading over to the drawers that hold my fat quarters!
Hi Beth! So glad you like this! And I agree - there is far too much white or beige background out there. I once heard Maryanne Fons say that in India, pink is a neutral and I think she made a quilt with bright pink as the background. That has stuck with me, and while I haven't tried a really wild background yet, it would be good to stretch the imagination and experiment a bit. Thanks for watching.
Michelle what stunning quilts they remind me of the sea with the white tops to the waves. So useful that you workout for us how to get the required blocks from even the small fat quarter. Thank you for inspiring x
Thanks so much Claire! I wanted to show the importance of measuring twice, and cutting once!! Just like my dad taught me. I'm often surprised at how inaccurate the starting fabric can be. I've found 5.25 inch charm squares and jelly roll strips that are closer to 2.25 rather than 2.5. Best to be prepared from the start of the project! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Jeane! The smaller one is my favourite as well. I didn't think the smaller pieces would be fun or easy to work with, but I was wrong! And the extra effort is worth it! Thanks for watching.
I love this quilt. Thank you for all the cutting instructions ❤I am one of those insane people who loves to salvage the smallest of scraps. I can see myself using this block in a tiny version with scraps. ❤😂
Now that's a really interesting idea.... really, really tiny.... hummm. The math would likely be 1 inch squares for the 4-patch blocks, and then 1.5 inch pieces for the remainder. Not sure how I feel about that. But it might just end up sticking in my head until I give it a try. 😜 Thanks for watching.
Hi Katie - they are my favourite too! I think I'll stick to the smaller blocks for baby quilts, and make 48 of the larger blocks for a larger quilt. Thanks for watching.
Irish Chain is one of my favorite and the reverse looks amazing. I really like the little one, because it has so much more of the chain. Both turned out gorgeous. Thank you!
I'm glad you like them! You could always make 48 of the larger blocks to get the same look as the smaller one, but as a bigger quilt! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Susan! They both look good scrappy, but the small one has such great impact in this baby size. It's my favourite of the two. Thanks for watching.
Like them both, but I love the small blocks!! Don't know if I would be brave enough to try it. Lol I'm so glad your video popped up! You got my creative wheels turning!
Hi Faye! You can make the smaller blocks - I'm sure of it! Just take your time cutting and make sure you use a perfect quarter inch seam. I have faith in you. Try a test block and see how it goes. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Socorro! I think the smaller version is perfect for baby quilts and I'll make 48 of the larger blocks for an adult-sized quilt. Thanks for watching.
I absolutely LOVE this pattern - I just learned a friend is pregnant, and so it’s perfect timing for me to make a baby quilt! And I agree - the larger quilt would be beautiful, too. Loved both the bigger and smaller blocks - just beautiful!
Hi Lynn - I think your reasoning is perfect - a larger quilt, use the larger blocks. A smaller quilt, use the smaller size. You will get a similar impact in the end. Thanks for watching.
Hi Rose - as my dad always said, "Measure twice, cut once!". I'm always surprised at how variable the size of things can be. I've used charm squares that are easily 5.25 inches and as I show you in this video, some pretty skimpy fat quarters. Measure first! Thanks for watching.
Hi Cathy! The smaller block is my favourite too and I thought it would be really hard to work with the little pieces. But it wasn't that tough. Try a test block and see how it goes. I have confidence in you! And you can all trim or square up as needed.
Hi Mary Jane! I agree! I love scrappy quilts and while the blues all coordinate, they were all just fat quarters I found in the bin of fabric my friend asked me to make baby quilts from. So not exactly scraps, but not fully planned and coordinated either. Dig into the scrap bin!
I’ve been looking for a jelly roll pattern for some Liberty like prints and I think the small one will work with the strips…I’ll be testing a square in the morning ❤ Thanks!
Oooo!!! Liberty-like prints. Sounds amazing already! You will have to trim some of the strips down to 1.5 for the 4-patch blocks, but it sounds beautiful already. Thanks for watching.
❤❤❤ the smaller one❣️❣️❣️ 1.5 seems a bit crazy … unless you are talking about scraps and maybe making your 4 patches as a leader/ender bonus project. All of a sudden it’s not so crazy anymore 😂
Also, as someone who lives with multiple large, hairy, mud lovers 😉… I’m not a huge fan of a lot of white in quilts for myself. Your reverse Irish chain is perfect ❤
It looks as though your fabrics were prewashed. If so would you share your process on that for us? Both quilts are nice but the smaller one looks so cute and "dainty".
Hi Connie - I always prefer to prewash as much of my fabric as possible. I don't like working with fabric when it has the various starches, stiffeners and anti-fade chemicals in it. Generally I wash everything larger than a fat quarter. I don't wash charm squares, 2.5 inch strips or 10 inch squares (usually). The fabric does fray, so you will loose a bit off the edges, but that's fine for me. I have no specially washing technique - just toss it in with the family laundry. Although I usually air dry fat quarters. But yardage goes in the dryer.
Impressive cutting
Thanks Carolyn! As my dad always said (and dad's everywhere, I think), "Measure twice, cut once!". So true in this case. Thanks for watching.
Loved them both
Thanks Pauline! They are really beginner friendly, and I love quick and simple patterns that have such impact. Thanks for watching.
Love them both! Now I know why I've been saving all those 1.5" and 2" squares! 😊
Thanks Beckee! Time to put them to good use! Thanks for watching.
Beautiful, I ❤them both sizes: thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks Amal! I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
Love this! I really like the smaller ones. Thanks
Thanks Elizabeth! The smaller ones are my favourite too. But with 48 of the larger blocks, you would get the same impact and a bigger quilt! Worth considering.....! Thanks for watching.
Great use of fabric!!!
Home run as always.
Love your videos, keep up the good work
Thanks so much Ryan! Really appreciate your support.
Great instructions! For a way to use fat quarters I’m all in!
Thanks Dee! Fat quarters are great for these, but scraps will also work. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.
I like the smaller quilt blocks with the small quilt. I think the bigger blocks will look good on a bigger quilt.
Hi Benette - that's my view, exactly! 48 smaller blocks make a great baby quilt and 48 larger blocks make a great size for an adult. Thanks for watching and I hope you give this a try.
I love little things so that little quilt is amazing
The smaller blocks are my favourite too. Much easier to make than I thought they would be.
Nice color choices. Thank you for the demonstration. 😊
The blues just jumped out at me as I was looking through the collection of fabric I had available. Thanks for watching!
So sweet! I love both sizes! Seems like a fairly quick quilt! ❤
Hi Amy - it really is fairly quick and easy to put together, especially if you are making a baby quilt. With only 20 blocks in the larger size, it is quick. It takes a bit longer to make the 48 blocks for the smaller size block, but totally worth it! Thanks for watching.

I love that smaller version!

Thanks so much Birgit! The smaller version is my favourite too. Thanks for watching.
Michelle, too cute. Both sizes. 🎶💐💖🫂
Thanks Carla! Hope all is well with you.
I love how you have reversed the Irish chain to have predominantly blue. So effective. And the smaller chain quilt is gorgeous. Thanks so much for this idea.
Thanks Jenny! I love the extra drama from having the white chains - and it's a great chance to show off some fabulous fabric. Thanks for watching.
I wish I could hear you
Just discovered your channel today and immediately subscribed. You explained this process beautifully, and I've saved this video to my quilting files.
Thanks so much Mary Jane! And welcome! I hope you find other fun and interesting videos. And don't forget the free patterns on my website. Thanks for watching.
Love the smaller squares
Thanks Sally - they're my favourite too! Thanks for watching.
Love this, even the smaller block one as well. Just lovely!
Thanks Laura! I love an Irish Chain and I love how this feels more dramatic than using a white background. Thanks for watching.
I just went to your site for the pattern, I LOVE the small one that is in all different colors, I will copy that idea for sure. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Jeane! Always make the most of your fabric bits & pieces!!! It works well with scraps!😉
Thank you for your knowledge of how to cut the fat quarter to get the pieces and I love the reverse Irish chain you made ,definitely will try 😃
Thanks Sara! My dad always said to measure twice and cut once! If you are trying to squeeze out as many blocks as possible, it's important to measure first. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Michelle, I love them both!
Thanks G!! I hope you give one (or both!) a try. They are fairly quick to make and I love how they have turned out.
The smaller one is my favorite! Never thought about doing a reverse Irish chain but I’m definitely going to try it.
The smaller one is my favourite too! I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.
I love the smaller block. Really nice!!
Thanks Rebecca! It's my fav too. Thanks for watching.
I love the smaller version!
Thanks Kathleen - it's my favourite too, especially for a baby quilt.
What a great video! Love your fabulous instructions! Thank you for the patterns. ❤
Thanks very much Nancy! That's very kind of you to say. I hope you will give one or both of these a try.
I love the smaller version the best
Hi Shannon - it's my favourite too! In the future, I'll use the larger size block to make an adult-sized quilt, and keep making the smaller blocks for baby quilts. Thanks for watching.
I love your hair along with your videos!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the 2 quilt patterns. They are beautiful.
You're welcome Robin! I hope you give these a try. Thanks for watching.
Very pretty. I never go to pieces that small so, yes instane, but you do you. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Cynthia! Another viewer just suggested even smaller!! Not sure how I feel about that. But the larger blocks are perfectly manageable, I think. Thanks for watching.
Those blues are beautiful! (So is your 💇) And the smaller blocks are a great way to use those 1-1/2 in scraps I have!
Hi Linda! Thanks so much! I really love the smaller blocks as well. Thanks for watching.
The smaller one is really sweet!
It's my favourite too! Thanks for watching Wanda!
I like the smaller size better for the baby quilt but the larger block for the other sizes . Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jammie - I agree! I think 48 blocks is the perfect number for the chain pattern. 48 of the smaller block makes a great baby quilt and 48 of the larger block makes a great adult quilt. Thanks for watching.
This makes a beautiful quilt. Thank you.
Thanks Arvetta! It is a great in so many sizes and versatile for so many fabric themes. Thanks for watching.
You're a sweet blessing! Beautiful work!!
Thanks so much Catherine! I really appreciate your kind words. Thanks for watching.
I need to make a baby quilt and this is perfect for it! Thank you so much!
Yay! Thanks Jacky! Will you make the larger or smaller blocks?
@@bitspiecesquilting probably larger.

That's lovely! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Wanda! I hope you will give this a try.
Great video and instructions Michelle.
Thanks Peggy! I hope you will give this a try - it's a lot of fun.
Your hair is so cute! Your hair color is beautiful.
Thanks Vera! I got tired of colouring it about 5 years ago and was really happy with what grew out. Good genetics, I guess.
This looks perfect for a linen quilt, (made from linen shirts, a’la the CatBird Quilts) since linen prefers right angles. So lively. Thank you!
Hi Denise - linen would look so sophisticated, I think. And I love Cathy's work at CatBird. She has that sophisticated look in her projects. Thanks for watching.
@@bitspiecesquilting How very kind of you, Michelle! ❤ (and @Denise11Schultz too!) Thank you both!
Hi Michelle, I love the version with the smaller blocks. The new hairstyle is very cute as well. Have a great day.
Thanks so much Jean! I think the smaller blocks are my favourite too, but I really thought working with such small pieces would be more trouble than they are worth. But I loved the result. Thanks for watching.
Nice! 🌹🌹🌹🙏Love 💙🔵blue colour ! Great quilts!!!🥰
Thanks Liliana! I'll definitely make the little blocks again for a baby quilt, and the larger blocks for adult-sized quilts.
Absolutely love this tutorial.
Thanks Anna! That's very kind of you. I hope you give this pattern a try - the results are worth it!
Always a very clever girl , the colour amazing , very modern quilt fabric buying scares me , but love the sewing
Thanks so much Patricia! I appreciate the kind words. Don't let the fabric scare you! You know what you like. Trust yourself and enjoy the sewing.
Love the smaller size!! Beautiful ❤❤
Thanks Jennifer. I'm really glad I decided to try the smaller size. I was worried it would be too fussy, but I think it's actually my favourite, especially for a baby quilt.
I like the smaller one the best
Hi Cindy - it's my favourite too. Thanks for watching.
Love the smaller one of course blue is my favourite I love the reverse colour it is striking thankyou kim

Thanks so much Roxanna! I hope you have fun with this pattern. Thanks for watching and for your kind words.
Another good one Michelle. I particularly like the smaller version, it’d be great for lots of scrappy pieces as they would all ‘mush’ (technical term!) together. Also love the new hair cut!
Thanks Patricia! Maybe this will fit into your scrap-busting September sewing plans? An mush together is a perfect technical term!! Hope you are well.
When I first saw the smaller size I had a bit of a wow moment. It looks great. Thanks for this.
Hi Alison! At first I thought the smaller one would be a bit nuts - that the pieces would be too small to work with effectively, but once I started, I had the same kind of moment! And I'm glad I tried it. The smaller one is now my favourite. Thanks for watching.
I LOVE the smaller blocks. Great idea Michelle!❤
Thanks Michelle! They are a bit more work, but totally worth it.

Oooo!!! Liberty-like prints. Sounds amazing already! You will have to trim some of the strips down to 1.5 for the 4-patch blocks, but it sounds beautiful already. Thanks for watching.
❤❤❤ the smaller one❣️❣️❣️
1.5 seems a bit crazy … unless you are talking about scraps and maybe making your 4 patches as a leader/ender bonus project. All of a sudden it’s not so crazy anymore 😂
Also, as someone who lives with multiple large, hairy, mud lovers 😉… I’m not a huge fan of a lot of white in quilts for myself. Your reverse Irish chain is perfect ❤
Right?!? That's exactly the right kind of thinking Cynthia! And they were a lot easier to make than I thought they would be.
I love this!! Large, hairy, mud lovers to NOT need white quilts! Thanks for watching Cynthia!
