I think I like the star layout the best. I really don't like using a white background in a quilt. Think I will try it with another background color. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Cynthia - I was surprised how good the star layout looked on camera versus in real life. The star was actually hard to see. And I'm a creature of habit, so I went with my standard layout. There are so many colour combinations that would work well for the background fabric and the scrappy strips. Enjoy!
I'm excited to get started on this. We did 58 Christmas pillow cases for a seniors project and somehow I ended up with the scraps. This is a perfect project for them. Thanks!
Thank you for a lesson in how to piece more efficiently. Both finished quilts are lovely. Also love that you call your fabric a "collection" and not stash. Such a nice connotation Michelle.
Hi Delia - you know, I never noticed before, but you're right. I don't really use the word stash when I'm thinking / talking about my fabric. It really is a collection - things I have added and curated and "de-collected" over the years. Thanks for watching.
Absolutely thought this was gorgeous I am just not confident that a scrappy quilt I might do would turn out so awesome. You do an awesome job thanks for the handout great of you to do all of this for us.
Hi Loreen! I'm sure your scrappy quilt will look great! The secret for this one is to be sure there is a difference between your lights and darks. Mediums don't work really well in this project. And pick a "theme" for your scraps..... maybe it's Christmas like mine, or brights, or cottage, or ocean, or wild flowers. If you can select your scraps based on some sort of "theme" it makes it easier to see a cohesive final project. But crazy scrappy can also be brilliant too! Have some faith in yourself - I'm sure it will turn out well.
I have something that I tell myself...it might not be what I pictured in my head but it'll be something. And because it's handmade it'll be something amazing ☺

This just popped up on my YT feed this morning. Your final choice is my favourite. I have made numerous log cabin quilts but never the half log cabin. I think I will make one next year. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
This showed up tonight and I'm looking for ideas for my scraps. I've only been quilting about five years or so and never knew what to do with scraps. Eventually, it occurred to me that I could just make another quilt out of the scraps from a quilt I just finished, but that's not always the case. Some patterns call for a LOT of fabric and only about half of it is used. Very disappointing when I've spent so much money on the fabrics. You just gave me a wonderful idea and I will be doing this pattern. It looks so easy in that I can trim as I go rather than cut it all out and hope my seams work out. Thanks for a great video! I think this pattern is going to be a go to pattern for me!

Just came across your videos today. Love your direct approach--steps are easily explained. Thank you. Do you have aproject sheet for the half-log cabin? I perused your website and didn't see one. Thanks for the help with layout. Like you, I'm trying to finish up the smaller bits of Christmas fabric that are hanging around.

I used a white thread to quilt it. It is my favourite thread from a company called Can Sew (in Montreal). It is fairly thin (in terms of quilting and sewing thread) but I really like it. There are some additional close-up photos of the quilt on my Instagram (bitspiecesquilt) where you can see the white thread on the red fabric. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the scrapbuster! On the layout with the star in the middle, what do you think would have been different that you would have chosen that one? I would like to try that one, but I want to do it right, so what would you suggest? Different color? Different background? TIA
Hi Kay - great question. I think there are a few things that might have helped for the star layout. The first is likely a bigger quilt - with a layout of only 6x8, it doesn't give the star much space to "shine", so a larger quilt might help with that. The second is that I'm a creature of habit and I like what I like, so my standard layout for these blocks is what I usually use (I know - I need to break out of habits!!). Contrast is also important, but I think that's well covered in these blocks, so not likely an issue. Thanks for watching!
Hi Cathlyn - for me this is only a half log cabin block. A full log cabin block in the traditional style would have two sides with coloured / printed pieces and two sides with background pieces (and the red square in the centre). Or if you put the coloured sides on opposite sides, you would have Courthouse Steps. They are all excellent options to use up scraps!
Hi Denise - these blocks are really similar to half-square triangles, so any setting for those will work here as well. There are tons of possibilities and it is worth trying a few layouts before deciding on the final version. Thanks for watching.
Hi Sall - It could absolutely be made with jelly roll strips. You would have two options - either add a few number of rounds (rows) to your blocks, or have a much bigger quilt! Each option has its merits. Do a test block with some scraps and see if you prefer fewer rounds or the larger block. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ana Maria - I start with 2 inch strips. When you sew them using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, the final size of each strip is 1.5 inches. Thanks for watching.
Hi Judy - not yet. Part of the technique is to "guestimate" and use the lengths as they fit. But the math isn't too difficult. After sewing your 2 inch squares together to start, the next pieces should be 3.5 (one light, one dark), 5 (also one of each), 6.5, 8, and 9.5. Thanks for watching!
Hi Kim - my favourite one is the lighter one, which is a Fiskars mat. I likely bought it on sale at either a Wal Mart or Joanne Fabrics in the US many years ago.
Hi Wendy - you can definitely use 2.5 inch strips! Your blocks will get big fairly quickly and there won't be as much detail, but it will still look great. I've often wondered what it would look like with 1.5 inch strips...?? Likely a lot of work and fairly busy, but might be worth a try once that scrap bin gets full! Thanks for watching.
Hi Ella - all the strips in this project are two inches wide. You could do the math to cut each strip to the perfect length, but I prefer the approach I demonstrated in the video to cut them off at length as needed. Thanks for watching.
Привет 👋 Очень красивые работы! Можно Вас попросить включить субтитры на русском языке 🙏 мне трудно понимать английский язык. Я только учусь шить, мне очень хочется повторить за Вами дорогая 😊 За ранее благодарю.
What a beautiful quilt. I liked all the layouts, each had their own special effects. Brenda from Conquering Mount Scrapmore sent me, looking foreword to the project you are doing together.
Thanks Diana and welcome! Our Community Round Robin project is coming along well and we are working on getting the final details together, the blocks made and the videos filmed. It's a process! Thanks for watching.
Hi Ella - I'm sorry this was challenging for you. If you haven't already, perhaps printing the pattern (free from my website) and following along with the pattern might help. Or start with just one or two blocks and follow along with each step - watching and then doing might help clarify the steps.
Hi Sky Maiden - good question! I guess I've always seen it called a half log cabin, so stuck with the name. I just used Google images to search for both "half log cabin" and then "quarter log cabin", and many of the same images came up both times!!! I guess we all need a bit of geometry lesson! Thanks for watching.
I think this is half (even though it looks like a quart square) because in a full log cabin you have 4 strips in each round but here you have 2 strips in each. Just my thought.
Hi Erika - it is very rare to see a completely original quilt block. Quilters build on the knowledge and designs of those before us and while we might use a new tool, or a new approach, it is still a traditional craft with lots of history.
Your tutorials are always so easy to understand. I love your process and layout. I loved your mom’ version as well.

❤❤❤ thanks
Thank for watching Cheryl!
@@bitspiecesquilting Thanks! More blocks will be doable.
Hi Kay - just be sure to keep the layout to an even number of blocks - your star won't be centered if you use an odd number of blocks.
I'm wondering why you call it the half log cabin when you are making a whole log cabin block?
Hi Cathlyn - for me this is only a half log cabin block. A full log cabin block in the traditional style would have two sides with coloured / printed pieces and two sides with background pieces (and the red square in the centre). Or if you put the coloured sides on opposite sides, you would have Courthouse Steps. They are all excellent options to use up scraps!
❤Beautiful ❤
Thanks Marlene - it's an easy project and I hope you will give it a try.
What about the layout w a square in a square?
Hi Denise - these blocks are really similar to half-square triangles, so any setting for those will work here as well. There are tons of possibilities and it is worth trying a few layouts before deciding on the final version. Thanks for watching.
Can this be made with a jelly roll? I saw you called for only 2” strips in your pattern? TIA
Hi what are the sizes of the pieces red and white? And what is the final size when you sew together?
Hi Ana Maria - I start with 2 inch strips. When you sew them using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, the final size of each strip is 1.5 inches. Thanks for watching.
Has anyone asked this question: is there a chart showing the length of the 2” strips to reduce scrap?
Hi Judy - not yet. Part of the technique is to "guestimate" and use the lengths as they fit. But the math isn't too difficult. After sewing your 2 inch squares together to start, the next pieces should be 3.5 (one light, one dark), 5 (also one of each), 6.5, 8, and 9.5. Thanks for watching!
I really liked the first layout like your mom did
Hi Eva - I'll tell her! She'll be thrilled that people liked her layout. The pinwheels are really pretty.
I like the first one better
Hi Phyllis - that's the magic with these blocks - so many options! Thanks for watching.
Where did you find your cutting mat?
Hi Kim - my favourite one is the lighter one, which is a Fiskars mat. I likely bought it on sale at either a Wal Mart or Joanne Fabrics in the US many years ago.
can a 2.5 inch strips be used
Hi Wendy - you can definitely use 2.5 inch strips! Your blocks will get big fairly quickly and there won't be as much detail, but it will still look great. I've often wondered what it would look like with 1.5 inch strips...?? Likely a lot of work and fairly busy, but might be worth a try once that scrap bin gets full! Thanks for watching.
What is the size of the white ?
Hi Ella - all the strips in this project are two inches wide. You could do the math to cut each strip to the perfect length, but I prefer the approach I demonstrated in the video to cut them off at length as needed. Thanks for watching.
Hi Angela - thanks for watching. I'll see what I can do about subtitles. Best wishes!
@@bitspiecesquiltingспасибо большое ❤
What a beautiful quilt. I liked all the layouts, each had their own special effects. Brenda from Conquering Mount Scrapmore sent me, looking foreword to the project you are doing together.
Thanks Diana and welcome! Our Community Round Robin project is coming along well and we are working on getting the final details together, the blocks made and the videos filmed. It's a process! Thanks for watching.
please get a different cutting mat it is very hard to see your block when you tri
Hi Patricia - I love the grey fiskars mat for cutting; it is my favourite of all the cutting mats I have. Thanks for watching.
As a Beginner I am confused. You didn't make sense to me.
Hi Ella - I'm sorry this was challenging for you. If you haven't already, perhaps printing the pattern (free from my website) and following along with the pattern might help. Or start with just one or two blocks and follow along with each step - watching and then doing might help clarify the steps.
Why is it called a half log when in actuality is a quarter of a log
Hi Sky Maiden - good question! I guess I've always seen it called a half log cabin, so stuck with the name. I just used Google images to search for both "half log cabin" and then "quarter log cabin", and many of the same images came up both times!!! I guess we all need a bit of geometry lesson! Thanks for watching.
I think this is half (even though it looks like a quart square) because in a full log cabin you have 4 strips in each round but here you have 2 strips in each. Just my thought.
Just because of Christmas fabric, you didn’t show nothing new.
Hi Erika - it is very rare to see a completely original quilt block. Quilters build on the knowledge and designs of those before us and while we might use a new tool, or a new approach, it is still a traditional craft with lots of history.
Love these! Pinwheel is my fave. Both are beautiful.
Thanks Janet.
Beautiful
