How to make a Disappearing Nine Patch - Free Tutorial

  • Today I'm making a disappearing nine patch quilt, and using up every one of the bits and pieces from the 20 fat quarters in the bundle. With some creative piecing, and some border fabric, I was able to make two complete quilts from the 20 fat quarters. Each quilt is 57x69.
    A free pattern is available for download on my website at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com.

    What a great tutorial, you explained it great, kept it moving keeping it interesting. I usually lose interest with videos that go on and on with added rehashing. You are a great teacher. If we don't understand something we can always rewatch. Again your teaching style is great.

    This is great. I have🎉 done the disappearing patch. There are so many different ways to do it. You can get some really awesome blocks. You can also use same material in same position in each block and makes another total different lay out. I did one that you start upper left block leave in place ,upper right block turn once, bottom right turn 2 times then bottom left turn 3 times. Really varies the layout.

      Hi Connie - I love that there are so many ways to use the same simple design. It's really magical the difference some fabric placement and block twisting can make! Thanks for watching!

    I found it very helpful to see the way you cut the fat quarters without losing the grain of the fabric. I always struggle with that.

      Thanks Laura. I get annoyed when fabric is t printed straight (especially “designer” fabric) Sometimes there are choices and compromise to be made, but straight of grain is always my preference. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Sue - getting the fabric on straight of grain, no matter how it is printed, helps with overall accuracy and sewing pieces together. Getting those pieces laid out as straight as possible is a good habit to get into. I hope these tips help. Thanks for watching.

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Liz - it's a quick and easy approach that works for me. With garments, you run into huge issues if your grain isn't straight. It's not as critical for patchwork, but does make things easier overall. Thanks for watching.

  • @dialarkingsley3924
    @dialarkingsley3924 6 месяцев назад +1

    I love that you addressed straight of grain. As a garment sewer that is number one..getting back into my sewing, especially quilting now that I'm retired, jelly rolls & fat quarters etc was all new to me and I wondered about buying precut bundles of these. Tx for the info. I'll be sure to subscribe. Watching you from Ontario, Canada.

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Dialar - thanks for watching and commenting! I always get frustrated with fabric that is stretched or not printed properly and it can feel like such a compromise sometimes between getting the straight of grain or the print straight. Obviously straight of grain is critical in garment sewing, but a little more forgiving for patchwork. If you watch some of my other videos, you will notice that I'm not a big fan of the smaller pre-cuts (smaller than a fat quarter). The variety is fun, but so many companies add pinked edges to charm squares, jelly rolls and layer cakes and I hate those - they throw off the measurements and drive me nuts.

    That's brilliant! I actually haven't used fat quarters mainly b/c I thought there would be a lot of waste. Thanks for thinking outside of the "block" and sharing this with us! As I continued watching the video I saw that you cut a 1.5" strip for your scraps. Have you ever made a binding using a 1.5" strip and a 1.75" accent strip to create a faux flange binding? I love to use those bindings and it can be made scrappy with the Kaffe fabrics using the teal as the 1.75" to create the flange.

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  8 месяцев назад

      Hi Marsha - thinking outside the block!!! I love that! Thank-you. I have tried the flange binding and will absolutely need to re-visit that technique. Thanks for the reminder. I always hand stitch my binding (on the back) because I don't like the way it looks when done by machine, but the approach with the flange makes a world of difference and I'll have to try that again. Thanks for watching.

    Can’t wait to see your finished quilts 🤩 And you are right about not noticing that some pieces are ‘pieced’ 👍 Perhaps you might notice with less patterned fabrics, but we probably all should make the most of our fabrics by using them like this 😃 Great idea 👏👏🇬🇧
    And you could use those leftover pieces in the quilt backing 🤔

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  Год назад

      Hi Glynis, I really wanted to make the most of every piece to get two tops. I haven't done much experimenting with the "after quilt" as Karen Brown from Just Get It Done Quilts calls it. I've seem some backings that look almost as good as the front... worth a try!

    Beautiful! A new technique for me to try!! I am also a "waste not, want not" quilter (aren't we all?) so those tiny leftovers go into a pillowcase to fill and donate to a local pet shelter to be used for a dog bed.

      Oh my dear!!! There are no rules in quilting - ever!!! If you manage to get fabric together with batting and backing and it lands on a the sofa, or a bed, it's a quilt. If that fails - you can call it fabric or fibre art, or the first steps to future greatness. Don't let anyone tell you there are rules or that your project isn't perfect in its own way - imperfections and all!!! Truly! We have enough stress in our lives - we don't need stress in our hobbies and passion as well. ❤️❤️
