Using the bonus triangles to make pinwheels is such a good idea. I’ve just made a TON of tiny HSTs from bonus triangles (and I have no idea what I will do with them). I wish I had seen your video first! Oh well, I know for next time
REALLY nice pattern. Thank you. I love making 4 patch, 9 patch etc without having to have a neutral/background for every other square. This will use a nice bit of scraps!
Hi Debbie - there is still a good amount of background in this one, but if you make the scrappy border, it really makes a dent in the scrap bin. Thanks for watching!
I have been looking for a pattern to use for a scrappy quilt for my bed and I think I found it! I've never done a scrappy quilt and want one, thought I was going to do a log cabin but it just wasn't clicking. This one clicked! Great pattern, thank you.
Thanks Cindy. I'm always amazed as how well the scraps eventually go together. There is often a moment where I think.... eeek.... but it always seems to work out in the end! Thanks for watching.
I loved that you did this with basic tools: no fancy rulers or pens. This is very helpful for those of us who don't have much to work with or space to store it. Lovely pattern.

Excellent podcast. So many fantastic bits of information that will be invaluable for a new quilter. The pattern is really interesting even for an experienced quilter. Thanks.
Beautiful scrappy quilt. I love scrappy!!! I just started quilting a little over a year ago and I am totally addicted!!!! Love this and just may make it in the near future. I am still in the throes of collecting scraps. Thank you very much for sharing!!

Very much enjoy your tutorials I have so many scraps every time I try to cut them into usable shapes I get a little overwhelmed thanks so much for sharing ❤
Just dive in Alison! I promise, even without any sort of theme or plan, they will come together and look great. Take the leap of faith! Or.... pick a theme of some sort... maybe beach, or Christmas, or cozy cottage, or wildflower meadow, or spring garden, or brights, or carnival, or???... or something that will help you pick scraps along a theme. Have fun with it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Ellen! The little half-square triangles as just too small for me, so I really like the hourglass blocks. I have a bonus project almost finished to use them, but there are already a few patterns on my website with ideas. Thanks for watching.
I try to make 2 quilts a month. I don’t let mine accumulate. I set three bins, one for salvages, one for cut offs, and finally “leftovers” after the quilt is done. The cutoff/wastes are used to fill up donated dog beds. You would think i would have so much based on what I sew. None of my threads go in the trash. Every “bit and piece” gets used up about every two months.
l have 2 scrappy quilts in the making. Both are mystery quilts, 1 l was 11 blocks short they have been made. The other l just started. Hi Paula! Glad you like it! It really is easy and despite loving scrappy quilts, I'm always a bit surprised when the chaos comes together into a great final product. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Jeri! It's amazing how much fabric it uses it and I love having a entire quilt (except the background fabric) come out of the scrap drawer. Thanks for watching.
This is gorgeous and thanks for sharing the tutorial. I probably would have cut a 4.5” strip for that last block. Now I will think about doing something like that for a minute before I do it!
Hi Corgikat! I've discovered that pattern writing can be hard - you have to make some assumptions and that includes the width of fabric. Sometimes there is as little as 40 usable inches and sometimes as much as 44. But I hate to "waste" fabric - or add to my scrap bin unnecessarily. A bit of forward thinking and quilting math can really help. Thanks for watching!
That turned out beautiful, I have been making scrappy 4 patches with my left over 2 1/2 inch strips and squares and put them in a pile, now I know what to do with them. Thanks for showing us how to make those hour glasses, I usually sew the long side and make into pin wheels, but I like the look of the hour glass better.
Hi Diana! Sounds like you are already half way there if you have a pile of four patch blocks already! I hope you give this a try - and the free pattern is on my website. Thanks for watching.
Found your channel last night. Loving your simplicity and ease of your description. I’m a long time quilter OBSESSED 🤩 with scraps. I take everyone’s scraps that I know! LOL. Thank you!
Ok, I believe I have “enough” blocks sewn in all Christmas fabrics. I need to rent space just to lay it out! I have too many dogs and two puppies. If I get down on the floor, forget about sewing, it’s play time in my house. Thanks for the inspiration. I also used the off cuts and made 1.5 (triangle) into pinwheels that I used for trim on a Christmas panel.
So exciting Sally! It's scrappy, so don't worry about a layout - just sew them together and it will look great. I can only imagine what dogs and puppies would do to a bunch of quilt blocks on the floor!!!! What a riot! If you are comfortable, I'd love to see a photo of the finished quilt top - bitsandpiecesquilting@gmail.com.
Your mind is a beautiful thing! I'm learning what makes a scrappy quilt workable. My problem is, I keep my smaller pieces in a zipper pouch next to some larger pieces in the same color family. To store bits of extra tiny pieces, I've resorted to a plastic grocery bag. Others might through them away, but I still see their value.
Hi Nancy! Thanks for your kind words, and I'm glad to hear you are working with your scraps. Sometimes it takes a while to come up with the fabric organization system that works best for you... and that might change over time as your interests change. Keep having fun and trying new things! Thanks for watching.
I really like this it’s scrappy but doesn’t make me dizzy. Adding this on my to be made list. Yep I save all my corner cuts for either hourglass or pinwheel blocks since I started watching you.
Hi Jean! I think the impact also comes from choosing fabric along a "theme" - whatever the theme might be. It gives it a bit of a sense of unity. And then the background and trellis units are really neutral, so the overall impact works. I'm glad you are saving your hourglass blocks! The bonus project will be out soon, and there are other hourglass block patterns on my website. Thanks for your ongoing support.
Hi Shirley! You can totally do this! Download the free pattern from my website: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com and give it a try. It's beginner friendly and don't over think the scrappy-ness of it all. Thanks for watching.

Hi Peggy - glad you like it and hope you will give it a try!
Where is the printable downloadable pattern? I subscribed to your site but can’t find the PDF for this quilt.😮
Hi Crissie - if you click "Patterns" in the top right from the main page, it is the last pattern (most recent) added at the bottom. The direct link is: static1.squarespace.com/static/642d617e6e6ac86b4bbb1a23/t/660e9073704c6540acdb7b14/1712230529392/2024+Four+Patch+Trellis.pdf

Me too! There is always a moment during construction when I think....yikes that's a lot of different fabric.... but then it all magically comes together and looks great. Thanks for watching.
