i use old store receipts for paper backing. much thinner and easier to remove after sewing. no extra cost either1
For background dilemma, use white low volume scrappy fabric. I've got about 4 different ones in one quilt. Unless you really look, you can't tell the difference. All you see is the "movement".
Love that idea!
That is what I always do, use multiple fabrics for background. It always looks good.
When my friend retired, he gifted me all his "work shirts". These were long-sleeved dress shirts in pastels and mostly white 100% cotton. He was going to live in t-shirts and cargo pants forever more.
I used them all as background alternate blocks with my scrappy crumbs. Even as alternate columns for a Chinese coin pillow, the difference is not readily evident. Figuring out how to use up the cuffs and collars was fun too. Small bits of coffee prints and a beige pillow case combined with all those shades of white made for muted blocks. 🍄🍄
I believe if you paid for, or received gifted fabric it’s not meant for the trash! Even the stringiest of strings can be used in filling a project. The crumbiest of crumbs can be collaged into a frame. Good quality cotton is too costly to throw out!
What is that American pharmacy that gives ludicrously long receipts? Nip in and buy some chewing gum!!!
I use water soluble interfacing for both crumb quilts and string quilts. There's no need to tear anything away and it's fairly inexpensive as I wait for the sales. It's also much easier to sew with than paper.
Me too, it’s great. Stabilisers your work and no need to remove.
Fantastic idea! I'll need to try this out ASAP!
Me too, mainly because I wouldn't make it if I had to tear paper away. It's been a game changer for me
Where did you find the water soluble interfacing? I have never tried it. Thank you.
@@YvonneCole-ok2rc I don't know what other people use but I use gypsy quilter scrap tape. Hope others will reply what works for them too.
I LOVE CRUMBS!!!
If I'm doing a quilt, you can just quilt your scraps right on your batting. Then just add your backing and binding. 😊
I love crumb piecing, so relaxing, thank you for a new idea to use crumbs, good luck on the king size. I'm working on a king size with 5x10 rectangles, making a shadow quilt. I wish us both luck
Good luck! Lol
Dryer sheets is my go to for quilt blocks.
What a great idea!
OK they are plasticised but using them as backing will keep them out of the landfill for tge next 40 - 50 years
I make mine on paper tape for an adding machine. It’s about 2-3” wide, and you can sew a long strip of crumbs. No cutting large paper down to size, easy peasy.
I have a ton of scraps from EPP that I sewed to adding machine tape. Then I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. I don’t like all scraps (it’s Tula pink so looks like rainbow barf) but nothing else excited me. I think I’m going to try this, but maybe use some of the solid jelly roll strips I have laying around…. Great video!
Another awesome video. I’ve tried this before using adding machine tape, but never really finished any project with the crumb strips. I like the idea of using neutral fabric in between the strips. I think the reason why yours look so fabulous is because your choice of colors is excellent. Because they are from a collection, it looks way better than mine would.
Personally, I LOVE scrappy crumb quilts that are a jumble of everything and anything; but every time I tried to make one, my brain couldn't agree. I tended to over think and analyze my selections. Once I started keeping scraps in collections everything started clicking and became inspiring! Lol (but if someone else threw everything in, I'd LOVE IT! Lol)
@@MoonkinStitchery - I think that is what makes your videos and process unique. Your projects are simple, yet sophisticated. Your teaching style is no-nonsense and straightforward. The results speak for themselves. I am always anxious to see what new tips and techniques you so generously share with us!
I like the idea of more controlled crumbs. I wonder if anyone has used old paper patterns for the paper….
My adding machine tape crumb strips are about a yard long each. I create fabric by sewing the long sides together. About six strips. Then I remove the paper. After cutting out the pattern, I back each piece with interfacing. So far, I've made masks, bucket hats, pin cushions, pencil pouches, coasters, narrow table runner, pockets (for aprons) and toss pillows. No two things ever look alike.... Lol
I love sewing tiny pieces of fabric. ❤ thanks for the idea. 😊
It’s a crazy crumb quilt! So creative!!❣️
Thank you! 💜
Keep on going! I am eager to see the complete king size quilt. 🙌🏼
I'm making a quilt like this. It's fun to make.
Thank you for teaching us such a cool technique. Looking forward to trying it!
Another great video…. I think I hear my crumbs calling me ❤
That is a great technique, I like it and will be doing that pattern. I have soooooo many crumb pieces. This will be an interesting way to use them up. Thanks for sharing. ❤
You are so welcome! 🤗
Excellent! I am late to this video but I already got the pattern before I even started watching. Edited to add that I conveniently have a large pack of 8 1/2 by 11 newspaper weight paper that I bought from Amazon. Currently this paper is being used for my rainbow string quilt, which is a work in progress.
I love this. Haven't done any tiny pieces yet but want to try this.
I love this little patch❤
I love sewing scraps & you have some awesome patterns. Thank you
Glad you like them! 😄
Love the effect you have created. Looks fantastic.
This is perfect for my scraps and looks so great by separating with a solid. Thanks for sharing your free pattern!
This turned out so pretty, I love it!
I have been quilting only 6 years, but I recently made a top 50 x 60” from all scraps (no background) and barely dented my leftovers. I’d bet most quilters have plenty enough for several scrap quilts.
My goal is to make a 100% pure scrappy quilt one day. Lol
This is so awesome! I have tons of crumbs and now I know what to do with them.
Brilliant! I've always loved scrap/crumb quilts, but it's so good to see them used in a little more organized way.
Very informative and easy to follow. Thank you!
Sweet way to use up all those scraps!!!
Love this tutorial!
This is a great way to use up scraps. The pattern is easy also.Thank You for the video.
Very clever , thankyou , always enjoy your wonder full idea
Many thanks! 🤗
Nice idea. Thank you for the video 😊
What a fun idea! Thank you for such a great video 🤗
I made a small cut next to each side of the seams. This helped me start the paper removal process.
Oh, that's a brilliant idea! I need to remember that! Lol
Great tutorial. ❤
My aunt would use the rolls that are used for receipts, it separates from the stitches easily
I love scrappy projects! ❤ This is a great block. Thank you for taking the time to share this idea! 😊
Excellent, thank you!
I love this! I have been starting sewing my crumbs in to large pieces - I think I’ll cut them down and do your pattern. So much faster! Thank you for the tutorial and idea 😊
Great lesson on crumbs! SO , I have made a strip quilt in this method. Duh..!😅.
Let me get started. Thanks!!!❤
Love your videos and your presentation. Do pleasant to listen to.
I finally made my first string blocks using scraps. Omg it’s addicting.
I did make as many as I could and then placed them all in a bin like yours and I’ll keep adding to it. Now excited to use this method for all those crazy pieces. I have seen where someone used adding machine tape but don’t think it would be the correct width for this pattern.
Thank you sharing a your amazing talent with us all!
Just cut your background strips the same width as the tape. Or have any width background strip to get your blocks the size you want.
Wow! This is awesome! Thank you so much for the tutorial, pattern and idea.
You are so welcome!
I love this!
Love this and I specially love the fabrics you're using. Thank you.
Thank you! 😊
That's so creative
New subscriber here. 😊 I'm dying to do a crumb quilt... I think this would also work really well as a Quilt As You Go style.
Oooo! Love that idea!
That's the seam roller I have (and the one I recommend). It's way better than any of the wooden ones on the market because it's a bit heavier, so it flattens the seams more easily.
Definitely! It's also perfect if you like making quilt bags, cork / vinyl bags, etc. too! 💜
I made my own from a broken tortoise-shell (plastic) hairbrush that I found outside JoAnn's Fabrics one day. It was mostly handle, and I put it in my vise and smoothed it down. Works great, and it was FREE!
Wow, nice! Thanks!
I like it!
Lovely...thanks❤
You're welcome 😊
💯👍 с удовольствием вас смотрю ,
Thank you! 💜
i enjoyed your video. I especially like how the background fabric sets off all the busy crumbs.. Just a thought--you could use adding machine tape and avoid the need to cut all that typing paper.
Yes, or as others suggested water soluble stabilizer so you don't have to remove any of it since it will wash off later on. 💜 (Rolls have been added to my shopping cart! Lol)
L❤it, thank you so much for sharing 😊
Always! 💜🤗
I love..love to crump quilt! I find that I don’t have to use a foundation of any kind if I starch. I want to suggest, if I do use a foundation..the paper from Social Security Benefits books the government sends out each year to us retired folks, is great paper for foundations. Ask your retired family to save them for you👍😂(KH)
Ohhh! Very intriguing! What a great tip, thank you!
❤❤❤
What is the primary fabric collection used in this video? I see it's Art Gallery Fabric, but what line/lines? I absolutely love it!
The season of tribute, listen to your heart collection.
What is that background fabric you use? I love it so much!
Page turner by art gallery fabrics. 😊 (It I can recall there is a grey and creamy/yellow available.)
Another great quilt block. For a king size quilt, why don't you use 12 1/2" strips? Make your strips bigger where you won't need as many.
Sure, you could do that. Scale the block to whatever size you'd want.
You can drop your stitch length down, I use a 1 and it prefer-rates the paper making it super easy to remove
I don't use paper, instead I use lightweight fabric or even light colored flannel.
That will be a nice weighted quilt! 💜
Great idea
How much yardage is required for American king size quilt...if you are not using any kind of precuts
Love it but I sort by color and size, my brain won’t let me just dump them together. Thank you for the pattern
I did not see the free pattern link.
www.moonkinstitchery.com/product-page/crumble-weave-crumbs-scraps-pattern
I want to get the pattern but I can't because they said that my phone number is wrong. I did put my rights phone number in.
You might be putting your phone number in the wrong format?
May I ask why you say "Do not iron it!" Is there a reason behind it other than convenience?
While you're piecing the iron can warp the paper causing it to distort. Thats why I iron at the end. ☺️
Where is the pattern?
Link in the video description.
Всё хорошо, но зачем так много говорить, без остановки! И без слов всё понятно 🤗
Thanks for professional presentation. And thank you for not making us watch you sewing.
