    Thanks for demonstrating how to fix a wavy block. I've sewn a couple like that and have been frustrated trying to fix them. It shows that we're all human and that with patience and care, we can conquer the waves!

      Hi Dotty - I love this!! Conquering the waves! I'm tempted to re-name the video! Thanks so much for watching.

    Michelle as always your honesty and sharing the not perfect is so helpful.
    It is the way you show how to fix them so they are the right size is so useful.
    No more putting them aside as they aren’t right . Thank you x

      Thanks Claire! After the first one turned out so badly, I thought it would be a good "teaching moment" on how to go back a few steps and fix things. This was just one approach and really good for something that is generally flat and not too large. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks, Michelle. Sometimes a (fairly) simple final border helps to define the more complicated borders on other blocks in this quilt-along. Thanks, also, for explaining to all of us who are (sometimes) less than perfect in our seams how to make the best of things. 🙂 (Psst! Brenda sent me...) 💙💛💙

    Those turned out beautiful. Thanks for giving such detailed instructions on making bordered blocks the size you need. Showing how to use 2 rulers to square up was very helpful. I agree some material you just have to keep even if you don't have a plan. That scrappy borders turned out amazing. Thank you for all the time you have put into this project, it has been fun. Have a blessed weekend!

      Thanks so much Diana! I still have trouble getting things perfect after all these years, so having some tips and tricks to make things work is helpful. I hope you are able to use my ruler trick. I don't want to buy tons and tons of different rulers when I can make due with what I already have. Thanks for watching.

    Your string pieced feature looks so good. I used a single fabric, and ended up adding extra embellishments because it needed more interest. I should have just followed what you did!

      Nah - make it your own! I was super keen to "stick to our rules" and work from my scraps and things I already had and this seemed like a great way to use some existing string pieces. Looking forward to seeing the big reveal for all our projects!

    ❤ when I started quilting I was told to put the border on top so it didn't wave. Thought this might help you with your blue block.

      Thanks Sheila! For a larger quilt I aways measure my quilt so the borders are the same size and fit the average length of my measurements. If I need to "encourage" something to fit, I was always told to put the larger piece on the bottom so the feed dogs can help easy in any bulk. If everything it fitting perfectly, I was but my border piece on top as well. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting video Michelle to see how you ‘fixed’ up your block. As always with quilting there is no right or wrong way just different ways to approach things to get the result you want in the end. And it is the end result that counts. Gosh, I do anything to make it work out in the end! Another approach to add to the mix is I would have used the first border after the churn dash as a compensating strip and got the block back to true size then and there. Your seam issue might be that your machine is still in transit and you are using a different machine? Do a seam check test. Just a thought. It’s hard to jump from one machine to another and expect perfect seams right off the bat.

      @bitspiecesquilting  4 месяца назад

      Hi Patricia! I wish I could blame it on using a new machine, but sadly, no - just an overall inconsistent seam allowance. 😟 And honestly - I was a bit too lazy to try to do the math the make the first strip a coping strip. I was taught the metric system in school, so sometimes fractions of inches is still hard to work through. Thanks for watching.

    Michelle you did a great job on this border. Yours turned out great I think. Yes you had to fiddle it, but it's all good in the end. My border do not have the pieced portion. And I am late with the comment because we were busy all day on Thursday with our friend's daughter's wedding.

      Hi Kelley! I can't believe that after all these years of sewing and quilting, I still have trouble getting my 1/4 inch seam right. I was glad to find a work around to make everything fit. Hope you had a great time at the wedding.

    I think you should’ve size the borders like you would a large quilt. You measure in three areas and take the average. then you have the Border or the longer piece at the bottom so your feet dogs can ease it in. You do have to pin in order to kind of distribute the ease. That’s a beautiful piece with that piece order.

    • @bitspiecesquilting
      @bitspiecesquilting  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi Nellie. There is definitely more than one way to fix a problem like this and your approach is how I always add border to a quilt. I always measure to be sure. In this case, I needed to end up at a specific size, so I would have still needed to cut the last border wider, but measuring for the exact length rather than trimming at the end would have ensured they were square. I was lucky that I was consistent in my inconsistency. Thanks for watching.

    I could relate to so much of this video right now as I am making a Christmas medallion quilt that starts with a 17" panel center. I'm on round 4 and the pieced strips are slightly too long, probably because my 1/4" seems weren't consistent. Oh, well 😅. I'll figure it out and no one will know but me! Note: I also can't talk while I'm cutting 😂. Thanks for your excellent videos ❤
