I get what you were trying to say in this video but there are times when your message is misconveyed . These stories are two different stories with two different messages. That share similar settings and conflicts. There are times in Dune the movie and the book where Paul tries to avoid violence. He eventually chooses to walk off in the desert and monologues about his disgust at visions of a jihad. There cliched action scenes to grab the audiences attention at times in Dune yes but there also parts of extended dialogue. There are parts in the book and movie where Paul tried to avoid violence. He laments the thought of a jihad. I think both are trying to get us to be weary of leaders and our own actions.

Two of miyazaki's works remain as some of my favorite movies of all time, "Nausicaä" and "From up on poppy hill" and I don't know why, but those two have stuck with me for a majority of my young life, as I've only recently reached adulthood, and I think those two films really shaped my young adult life, they'll probably remain my two favourites for the rest of my life

Thank you for this comment! I’m really glad you enjoyed it, it seemed like you got something out of it! In terms of the presentation, I should preface that what I meant by that comment is that there isn’t a lot in terms of the way the film is shot or its visual look that really stands out. When you look at a Miyazaki or Takahata film, you know in an instant that it’s a film they directed because of their unique style. I don’t really get that vibe from this movie as it feels more in common with something like arriety or the cat returns. This is definitely better than those two, but it still feels the same aesthetically

@@timjongunproductions thank you for the thoughtful response! I see now more of what you mean, but I still think if we had more material from Kondo we could appreciate his characteristics more. In fact, perhaps my favorite example of what Miyazaki famously called “ma” is in Whisper of the Heart, when Shizuku is returning home after embarrassingly telling to herself at the library (there are more in the movie, but I like this one best and I believe it’s longer). Also, I’d say there are quite a few stylistic similarities between When Marnie was There and Arriety which we can possibly attribute to a distinct style of Yonebayashi-I’m aware you’re not a huge fan of those movies though

Too bad you didn't mention the impact of who I'd argue to be the most important character and mother-figure in the movie. Younger Kiriko. She's the one who truly taught Mahito how to live. She showed him that no matter how flawed the result of someone's efforts are, their resolve is still worthy of respect on its own. This is why Mahito apologizes to the granny dolls after witnessing Himi save the blob people (even if she killed some in the process) which is arguably why he finally acknowledges Natsuko as his mother.

I'm glad this critique is more focused on the poorly integrated exposition than accusing it of queer-baiting. What matters is how Anna's relationship with Marnie Jr develops her character, but I think it actually reveals a bigger issue which is that the central story lacks meaningful drama. Anna's forgiveness actually doesn't work because she has no reason to resent Marnie Jr since they were seperated metaphysically. It had more to do with unfortunate circumstances than an innate flaw in Marnie Jr's character which isn't an effective way to express how being a caring person is what makes you worthy of love. That's why I'm going to pull up my trump card and say that the better story about self-worth is actually Marnie's entire storyline, but unfortunately, it was reduced to a means to conveniently strengthen Anna's resolve to live a better life than challenge it. I wouldn't say it's manipulative (this implies that what they're doing is potentially harmful which I think is wrong. It's just misguided priorities because they're obciously trying to spread a life affirming message), because it doesn't dismiss everything that came before, even if the reveal was contrived. It's thematically appropriate and served its purpose narratively despite the conclusion to Anna's arc already being pretty hopeful on its own. Maybe the arc should've been centered around decoding it instead. Also, make a video about the Evangelion Rebuild movies. I beg you.

I read somewhere that Miyazaki made this movie after having finished the manga Nausicaä and the Valley of the Winds because he wanted to tell the story again. He finished the manga in 1994 and this movie came out in 1997. He started the manga in 1982, though, and while both it and Princess Mononoke shares the same theme about enviromentalism, the manga is from the viewpoint of a younger (and perhaps a little more naive) Miyazaki. As he was making the manga and the 80s gave way to the 90s, he started to feel that the ideas and statements in it didn't really line up anymore with the personal beliefs he had aquired. He was commited to the story so he followed it through but immediately after finishing it he started making Princess Mononoke. It basically tells the same story but is a little more nuanced in it's execution. It tries to show, like you say, that the people destroying the environment are just normal people. War doesn't have to be the main reason the environment gets torn apart and the solution is not as easy as "Stop fighting and give love a chance!" Lady Eboshi, despite being the main villain, is trying to do something good, at least from her POV. She is taking care of the outcasts and the fallen in her village but in order to do so she sacrifices the environment and killing the spirits of the forrest. Miyazaki shows us that there is no black and white, only grey, and if we are going to stop this we have to work together, not constantly vilify each other, before it's too late.

Frank Herbert also wrote about how Dune is meant to be a warning against blind faith in charismatic leaders, as he says "Dune was aimed at this whole idea of the infallible leader because my view of history says that mistakes made by a leader (or made in a leader's name) are amplified by the numbers who follow without question." Paul's rise amongst the Fremen leads to a Jihad that kills billions in the known universe.

The problem is NETFLIX, they pretend to be correct, and That 70's Show was the opposite of those "actual values", I only remember Leia and Jay because theyre Eric/Donna and Jackie/Kelso kids...but they don´t have a great essence, Leia could be a empowered geek woman (a female Sheldon) and Jay and double hollow man...totally opposites. The chinese gay is another Regina George gay cliché that doesn´t make me laugh (and I`m gay). Anooother problem is that in 70`s show we see the problems between father and son...here the father doesn´t exist...Eric saying "I`m going to kick your ass" was the only time that I laugh in this show. The comedy has died, when you can´t make a parody of make a joke of everything...you shouldn`t touch a series that take the life of rebel kids and turn it into a Disney Channel crappy sitcom

I agree the fist 2 acts are a terrific exploration mental health and illness at a young age, there's a real understanding of what it feels like to experience that as a child. However I really believe there's value in the ending. I don't think it's artificial sadness but an honest look at how mental illness impacts those we love despite our best efforts, how older beliefs and stigma negatively impact recovery. She was cut off in a sanatorium while she tried to process her grief and ended up hurting her own child the same way she was hurt, something she never wished for which is made clear in her interactions with Anna. But learning how her grandmother kept trying to do better, how she gave Anna all the love she could in the time she had left, matters. Anna till this point believed she was just a bother to her biological family, someone not worth looking after, which makes it possible for her to think her foster mother's love is artificial. So learning Marnie choose her, wanted her and loved her, starts to heal some of that pain and she's able to accept that her foster family does love her. There is value in this film, and it's worth a watch. Mental illness is not romantic. It hurts you and those you love, and this film doesn't shy away from that or baby it's audience with a false idea that it'll all just magically be okay. What it does do is show that there's always hope. Marnie got to have joy and love again, and she took the chance to show love to her grandchild, and we get to see that that mattered. sorry for long comment, I have so many feels about this film as there's such a lack of sensitive explorations of mental health. Thanks for discussing this film! I loved your description of Anna's journey in the first 2 acts and and the clip editing was excellent :)

Hey, thanks so much for leaving this comment, and don’t apologize for it being long, I love seeing shit like this in the comments sections of my videos. I definitely see your point, and I so badly want to agree with you, but they went about communicating these ideas you mentioned in the final twist so poorly that it came across incredibly manipulative and insincere, at least to me. You can definitely make an argument for everything you mentioned, but for me, there were so many better ways they could have done all this and they chose the most frustrating option. But again, that’s just me, and it’s at least great that we agree on the first 2 acts being good!

I did not mind that twist at all and it really touched my heart. It's literally why i love that movie so much. I had a very strong connection to my grandma growing up and i realized way before that so called third act that Marnie is her Grandmother. The movie even hit harder when i watched it a second time with my boyfriend who is a bit of a more neutral person emotion wise but even he got it. He noticed it way before i did watching it the first time. They do hit you with a LOT in the end, like you mentioned that "fake sadness" but i think it does its purpose. It shows that someone can try to do the right thing but still fuck up, that there's more to the people who you think are mean. I cried in the middle but not in the end. I didn't feel sad but honestly hopeful. I do wonder if that movie has only that effect on people who are a bit older though. It's not about "getting it" with intellect but with life experience and the emotions that come with it. So i personally would still absolutely recommend watching that movie...but maybe not so much to someone who isn't in their mid 20s yet.

That’s an interesting point and I’m glad you shared it! While personally I don’t really get a hopeful vibe at the end (that was way better explored in the middle), it’s interesting you got that out of the film. I’m just one dude with one perspective so I can’t really speak for anyone else, so it’s really great to read stuff like this and get other viewpoints. Thanks!

I actually first watched this movie when I was around 11 and it was one of my favorites. But I think if i would have watched it for the first time at my current age, I wouldn't like it as much because after people watch many different stories with better plots they start to compare and therefore think that a movie is good or bad. But when the plot of a movie reflects your own experiences in life in a way, its a whole different story because you can emphasize with the characters. Actually thinking back, I think I might have emphasized with Anna too which might be a reason why I had liked it so much as a child

Although I don't think it was a perfect execution, nor a perfect adaptation of the source material, this is still one of my favorite Ghibli films because of the themes involved. I am sad that it's such an underrated film, but I am infuriated by the people who try to reinterpret this wholesome films into qu33r p3d0 !n¢3$t fan fiction that come up in RUclips and Google search.

I was so confused when they were in the silo and it all went crashing down from there.

Well tbf this movie was based off a book 🤷🏽‍♂️

Sure, but that doesn’t really have anything to do with what I talk about in the movie. Tons of great Ghibli movies are based on books, but that didn’t stop them from having great endings

I’d say still give it a watch because, again, I’m a gigantic asshole that takes the fun out of movies and you should form ur own opinion

I didn't like the twist at the end that much either but for me it was because their relationship seemed more romantic than platonic. I figured they just kept to book's ending. Which is true except that in the book Anna sent her daughter away because of WW2 and she married her cousin. Both changes are understandable lol

I see why they removed the cousin-marrying, despite the fact they queer-baited with a girl and young version of her grandmother who cared for her as a baby, but I'm surprised they removed the WW2 element given how prevalent the theme of war is for Studio Ghibli. Maybe they were afraid of typecasting themselves? ;-)
