    This is most likely recency bias, but my current ranking is Suzume > Your Name > Weathering With You. As mentioned before, Suzume radiates Ghibli/Miyazaki vibes, which made it more enjoyable and digestible for me. I really dug the road trip aspect and was vibing with the quieter, down to earth moments as well as the large, fantastical moments. That said, I need to rewatch and reevaluate Your Name and Weathering With You before committing to the ranking. Lastly, I’m so glad I went in completely blind, because I was not expecting a sentient chair (a pleasant surprise that I was all in for).

      Respectable ranking, and all the reasons you gave for liking Suzume over the other two definitely are justifiable, and I definitely loved the movie for those reasons too, I just connected with your name and weathering more, which is why I have them higher up, but glad you enjoyed it man

    Personally I like Suzume more than WWY but it doesn't eclipse your name as Makoto Shinkai 's magnum opus for me. I pretty much agree with almost everything said in the video, except two things:
    1. The pacing in Suzume is very good imo and I felt constantly entertained, even the part in the second act was fun for me. WWY for me had worse pacing as in it takes a while until the story kicks off. In your name and Suzume, Shinkai managed to intrigue me from the get go. The only things I think were a bit undercooked are Sota as a character and his grandfather (plus their duty as doorkeeper). Especially since Suzume's backstory is directly tied to the earthquake and tsunami that served as inspiration.
    2. The second statement I would disagree with is that Suzume is the "least Shinkai-like" movie of Shinkai. That title is still held by Children who chase lost voices. It's true that Suzume tones down the teenage romance stuff, but it still has enough "Shinkai-isms" that make it undoubtedly Shinkai's work. Children who chase lost voices however is still the "ugly duckling" of his career.

      Thanks for this comment man. I guess for me the reason why I prefer WWY over Suzume was just that I connected with the characters in that one more than I did the ones in Suzume. I actually liked how the supernatural shit doesn’t happen until the 2nd half, so until then you have time to connect with them.
      Not to say that I don’t think the characters in Suzume weren’t interesting or well-written, just overall a personal preference. I agree with your points about souta and his grandpa tho, but like you said they more than made up with that with suzume’s character herself.
      And thanks for letting me know about Children Who Chase Lost Voices, that’s one of the few Shinkai films that I haven’t seen so I’ll keep that in mind when I get around to it

    Yo Tim! I was WAITING for your review and I can say, I wasn’t disappointed. This is definitely a movie I want to see more and hopefully pick up more on the messages at the heart.
    Suzume is definitely another beautiful and solid entry in his filmography.

    Spoilers:
    To me, i loved everything about the movie, however I do felt like one common thing was in common with Weathering with you was the ending. The ending of Weathering with you was controversial because this guy who met a girl for the first time and sacrificed the world. I do understand it's unfair, however consequences are consequences, and it's kinda the same here. Suzume took him out of the keystone pole? rune? hole? even though it may cause devastation. Yes it's unfair, however the consequence is much greater, and I also didn't like how they kinda completely removed the Cat's feelings. I felt like we were given hints that the Cat was also a human with emotions and Suzume was like idc about you so i'ma make you stay in eternity and get this guy i love. But i love everything about the movie, my favorite moment was the Aunt confession scene.

    • @timjongunproductions
      @timjongunproductions  Год назад +1

      Yeah I see what you mean about the ending, but I feel like the cat also made that choice voluntarily, and imo I liked that it mirrored the ending of weathering in that the main character makes a selfish decision, but it’s at least justified and it mirrors these themes that Shinkai likes exploring about how love overcomes all odds. I personally loved the ending but I see what you mean.

    • @christophercafe8464
      @christophercafe8464 Год назад +3

      How was it a selfish decision when she stated she was ready to become the Keystone herself to save Souta? The Diajin then realized that he had received the admiration from his favourite person Suzume and decided to become the Keystone once again so Suzume wouldn't have to. So clearly nothing like Weathering. The ending of WWY fit that narrative perfectly just like this did in Suzume

    I watched Your Name, enjoyed it, then pretty much forgot about it. Mabye it was because it was overhyped.
    I can't stop thinking about Suzume and will definitely remember this one.

      @timjongunproductions  Год назад +1

      That’s totally fair, personally I don’t agree as I love Your Name and it’s still my favorite from the guy, but I totally get ur perspective, if it’s not for you it’s not for you.
      But I do agree that I also can’t stop thinking about Suzume. I already want to rush out to see it again.

      @@timjongunproductions But it doesn't have anything to do with Suzume's plot. And it is not even his worst movie. I just watched Beau Is Afraid, and that is a lot worse... hahaha...
