Hey all, it's been a while since my last video, sorry about that, but hopefully, this video where I talk/complain about Studio Ghibli's The Secret World of Arrietty will compensate for my absence.
Also yes, it took me this long to finally realize that I might need a new mic, so I'm currently on the hunt for a new one. In the meantime, enjoy the sweet, raspy audio of a weeb talking about Arrietty.

The music in this movie has the sauce though. It's so good.
That’s great if you feel this way, don’t wanna take away ur experience. I just didn’t get much out of it
@@timjongunproductions The movie do be lacking in the story area
I haven't even seen it yet but I remember the music being featured in a top-ten video and I still recall it. Really catchy.
@@yggdrasil2 Would highly recommend if you like celtic and folk type music.
Arrietty is my Favorite out of all of the Ghibli Movies :)
That’s cool, everyone has their preferences!
I stand with you
@@timjongunproductions Goes to show that everything is someone's favorite ;-) And it's valid unless it's Earwig and the Witch (which I actually enjoyed more than I expected, but I was bracing myself for the worst of tortures, and the story completely collapses).
who said !!! WHO SAID ITS NOT ONE OF MY FAVOURITE GHIBLI FILM! its so pretty and so much details in every scene
You’re free to like it, that’s fine, it just doesn’t do much for me
I feel they could have done so much with this world than what they did but they fell short, really short. 😊
I completely agree
How much you wanna bet it would be my favorite
1000%
Saw this a few weeks ago and it was cute but it was also incredibly bland. "Sauceless" is the perfect way to describe it.
Glad you agree, you summed up it pretty well. It was cute but I’m not gonna remember this (in t minus 1 day)
Arrietty is actually my favorite. But I do agree with you, I still think it could've done more but I still like it
That’s fair! It’s fine if you love the film, but I just have a lot of gripes either way with it cause it could have been more
It feels nostalgic to me in a way that some of Ghibli better films dont quite.
Its definitely a shallower experience than the rest.... but I think that simplicity doesn't have to mean mediocrity always.
Still isn't my favorite though, not disagreeing with anything you have said
I think that’s a totally fair thing to say. Personally I don’t mind Ghibli films that are simple just as long as they go beyond just being cute and fun for families. Like Kiki and Totoro are very simple films, but they also have a lot to offer aside from asthetic
Never heard of a movie being described as sauceless and love that phrase LOL ill be honest this has got me wanting to check it out to see how bad this movie could be as I do love a lot of Studio Ghibli movies, great video though man
As I said, it’s not necessarily bad, it’s just really mid and forgettable, and while that might be ok for some people, that is unacceptable to me. But glad sauceless might take off. Glad you enjoyed it lol
I love ittt
I suggest watching it without the high expectations of a "Ghibli" style movie. This reminds me more of a classic old live action kids movie, that was animated decently with fine performances.
After seeing this film for the first time in the theaters as a big Ghibli fan myself, I tacitly have to agree with your video. I thought “Arrietty” was decent, but not a peak Ghibli film, and definitely not as good as “When Marnie Was There”, Yonebayashi’s other film from Ghibli. I think the emotional moments between Sho and Arrietty was where the movie shined the most, but that’s about it. I’d honestly prefer watching “Ponyo” (my least favorite Miyazaki film) over this any day.
Glad you agree, and yes I’d rather rewatch Ponyo in a heartbeat over this film. And I have some thoughts about when Marnie was there coming soon, so be on the lookout when that vid comes lol
@@timjongunproductions Yes, I’m curious to see what you thought of “When Marnie Was There”. 🙂 Although I know we might not agree on the film, I’m open to seeing your perspective on it, and how you think the film holds up in contrast to Miyazaki or Takahata’s work. I’ll be keeping an eye out! 😉 In the meantime, I’ll have to take a look at your other Ghibli reviews! 😁 If you’re curious about what my favorite Ghibli film is, it’s “Castle In The Sky”, by the way, with “Howl’s Moving Castle” a very close second. 😀
I watch it for the art n world building , cause i love exploring stories of characters w different perspectives frm us.
There is a theming of classism n the less fortunate in the plot, its just really subtle. The main motive of The Borrowers is always of survival in the book series. The plot of the movie is just an adaptation of 1 book frm a series of 7-10 book journey.
The most mediocre Studio Ghibli film
I agree!
Exactly how I feel about Arrietty. I wanted to absolutely love it, but it has the same problem as Earwig ironically. To me, it feels like the plot is just picking up speed as the movie ends. I understand it was based on the first book in a series, and that’s totally fair, but we never got anything in the way of a sequel that built off the ending. I hesitate to call it a cliffhanger, but I felt like I was just being left to wait around for the rest of the story, which never came. I don’t hate it, though. The only Ghibli film I hate (so far into my viewing) is Ocean Waves.
Yeah I think you perfectly summed up how I feel about the movie. Not horrible or anything, just painfully mid
It’s surprising that this is the first Ghibli film that I’ve seen that was just mid. I will also be referring to movies based on their sauce level for as long as I live.
Everyone movie should be rated by sauce level instead of numbers. That’s the dream
Lmao bro, movie just started at the theater. 🎭
Coincidence? I think not
I don't see it this way! Arrietty and Sho have great character development! Both the characters come into the story with different perspectives of the world. And by the end of the movie, both take each other into account and grow as people from it. Sho learning from Arrietty to fight for what he loves. And Arrietty, I feel, became a more mature person. She realized that the real world is dangerous. Uuuum with the parent's critique, did we watch the same film? The dad is not a "worrying" parent. He actually was a great father and person the whole film. Calling it a complex beautiful orchestra pieces in Arrietty "kids" pieces is SOOOO disrespectful. Listen to ANY new Disney movie that came out in the past year and then come back and listen to Arrietty. Maybe you don't like the harp or string instruments? Like I dunno, you're critique makes me feel like you didn't give it a chance at all. Like when you describing the concept you quite literally said what MAKES it good?! Like the recipe is good BECAUSE IT WAS GOOD! Dialogue is great, and not in your face. They use show don't tell throughout the film multiple times in subtle ways. The relationships all are extremely memorable! I EVEN REMEMBER THE FUCKING CAT'S RELATIONSHIP! Calling this "sauceless" and other vague insults doesn't make this a great critique for me. Like I would be fine with you shitting on Arrietty but give real reasons and examples. I agree with studio ponoc's movies being really mid. Also, earwig was TRASH. But don't come after Arrietty! It does have Ghibli magic! Slow paced, beautiful movie with all the key elements. I agree maybe Arrietty could be a more complex character but I think for what the movie is she fits quite well.
ONE MORE THING! Sho being sick gave Arrietty perspective. He is fixated on death while she is fixated on survival. It makes a great conflict between characters! Making their friendship by the end of the movie more rewarding! The best movies are when characters philosophies clash and I think Arrietty did that.
