Nikon Z8 | Photographing Swallows - How did it do?

Hello folks. I hope you are all well. Swallows are definitely in good numbers at the moment and being that we are between the summer birds who have left and the winter birds that haven't yet arrived, it has been the perfect opportunity for me to try and get some swallow in flight shots. I, too, bought the Z8 instead of the Z9, also about 4 months ago. I came to Nikon from Sony, so I wanted a smaller camera to be a little closer in form to what I was used to. I briefly considered the Z9, primarily for battery life, secondarily for ergonomics, and thirdly, for built in GPS. Regarding the ergonomics, I realized that, while I had a battery grip attached to my Sony A9, I rarely used that camera in vertical orientation. GPS would have been nice, but I don't really need it as I don't do a lot of traveling. Regarding the first point, battery life, I find that a spare battery in my pocket is way cheaper than a battery grip, and preserves the smaller form factor I was after. I find the Z8's grip plenty large to be comfortable without a grip (not the case with my Sony A9). BTW, starlings have black beaks in winter. They turn yellow during breeding season due to carotenoid pigments, which they get from they diet (more insects in summer, which are richer in carotenoids from eating leaves). Lots of birds that are yellow, red, or orange get their brighter feather colors from the carotenoid pigments, which are the same pigments that give autumn its characteristic colors.

Some stunning super sharp images Richard. Unfortunately, as I have mentioned to you before, your editing suite is way above my technical understanding. My editing is very basic and the thing I miss most is to improve the background as you have to give that extra contrast to the Bird. With the starling I loved the improved background but personally I think you missed the plumage on the Starling, perhaps a bit too light. Just my opinion, a very underrated and beautiful Bird.

Absolutely enjoy using both or any systems you wish. It’s your hobby and how you go about pursuing it is your affair. This said, if you have not tried asking OM Systems for a loan of the Olympus 150-400 F4.5 and the Mk 2 OM-1? I only mention this because if you are using a dedicated de-noise program it might be the case that you could use the OM System for your wildlife photography and use the Nikon for other aspects of photography where weight, portability, speed to acquire focus across all settings is not the primary consideration?

Baan Maka is great! Well worth the trip for anyone who likes nature and is in Thailand. I was fortunate enough to spend 3 days there in Feburary this year. I only had the RF100-500 lens with me so F7.1! Low light shooting was hard as you said. Your PF500 F5.6 did very well.

@@RichardCookphotography You're welcome. I didn't go to ban song nok, thought I think I went past it a few times. While at baan maka I visted Lung Sin's hide and Bird's hide, I'm pretty sure from your video you went to one of them as I recognized it. I went in the mornings due to other commitments and was told by other guests that afternoons are the best time to go. They saw a greater variety of birds than I did in the mornings. One to remember for the future. I also went on a guided tour of kaeng krachan with 'Son' and saw asian elephant, sun bear, gibbons, and lots of birds. All organized by baan maka. I'm guessing one of the kind girls was Games?

Nice job Richard! I would recommend trying the v.1.7 firmware for the OM-1. I feel like it noticeably helped the AF when used with “All Targets” mode. For Hummingbirds I use to have to use something like the “Large” AF area to prevent it from locking on plants in the foreground and sides of the image. I am using it for most of my images now. I tend to look at gear a lot but really I am very happy with the OM-1 and the 300mm F4 with both TCs. To get significantly better images would cost quite a bit and I don’t know that I’d be any happier.

Hi and thank you for the heads up about the firmware update. When I get some time I will do it. You are right about the OM1 and 300 ...it is an excellent set up and is totally enough for nearly everyone. The only reason I got a Nikon camera is I had collected some great Nikon gear over the years that I was eager to use..,if I didn't have the Nikon gear I would have just stuck with my OM1🙏

Have you tried setting the Oly focus sensitivity to -2 to make it more “sticky” and AF speed to +1 or 2, it may not drop AF so much for BIF
