The Nikon Z50II for bird photography - a great option ??
Hello everybody and thank you for watching this video. Here, I share my thoughts about the recently announced Nikon Z50II. I have an interest in this camera because I use to own the original Nikon Z50, a camera I really liked using. I share my opinions on how this camera might do in terms of bird photography. No it isn't a professional grade camera and it isn't going to match flagship cameras especially for birds in flight but it might make a nice back up camera or even a great option for a beginner looking for a lightweight option with some nice features. Hope you enjoy the video!

Awesome imagery and commentary on this very capable camera. I'm a retired weekend warrior event photographer coming from full frame Nikon D3, D7000, D300. I used both full frame and DX sensor cameras. Of course back then the full frame and Dx were both 12mp sensors. thus the crop mode of the full frame did NOT match the quality of the DX D300, DX7200 etc... I used them in sports and weddings and concerts. No one knew difference between the two except in low light the D3 was KING! Now I ventured into mirrorless with Z50 and I love the camera paired with Z 24*70 | 2.8s , my F adapted Voightlander 58 and 40 mm along with kit lenses and finally 180-600mm. Im new to wildlife so I shoot with z 50 with good results. I do use it as if it was a Dslr. No Ibis and bird detect makes it a challenge but I have goten pretty clean results. I truly hope the D500 replacement punches above its weight. Nikon is really doing well in widlife photography area. and us old pros wish for it sooner than later!

Thanks for the video. I own both the D7500 and Z50 and use them for my bird photography. However I prefer the D7500 over the Z50 for most of my shoots as I feel more comfortable with it, having had it longer than the Z50. But now with the Exspeed 7 processor and the superior focus tracking I can't wait to own one. As for IBIS - no problem... never had one in all my cameras from my 1950s rangefinders, the 1960s twin-lens, the subsequent SLRs , the DSLRs. I guess I won't miss what I haven't had. I, too, bought the Z8 instead of the Z9, also about 4 months ago. I came to Nikon from Sony, so I wanted a smaller camera to be a little closer in form to what I was used to. I briefly considered the Z9, primarily for battery life, secondarily for ergonomics, and thirdly, for built in GPS. Regarding the ergonomics, I realized that, while I had a battery grip attached to my Sony A9, I rarely used that camera in vertical orientation. GPS would have been nice, but I don't really need it as I don't do a lot of traveling. Regarding the first point, battery life, I find that a spare battery in my pocket is way cheaper than a battery grip, and preserves the smaller form factor I was after. I find the Z8's grip plenty large to be comfortable without a grip (not the case with my Sony A9). BTW, starlings have black beaks in winter. They turn yellow during breeding season due to carotenoid pigments, which they get from they diet (more insects in summer, which are richer in carotenoids from eating leaves). Lots of birds that are yellow, red, or orange get their brighter feather colors from the carotenoid pigments, which are the same pigments that give autumn its characteristic colors.

Hi Richard. As a dedicated OM1 user I’m really pleased that you seem to have rediscovered your rig as I was a bit concerned that you had forsaken it for the Nikon. A very interesting video comparison and it has reinforced my opinion that the OM1 ticks all the boxes for me at least. Thanks for sharing.

@@davidguy6823 Hi David. Yes still love my OM1 for many uses. As I’ve said before if I didn’t already have some great Nikon glass that I wanted to pair with a good camera…I would still be using my OM1 only. I was a Nikon user who tried M43 as a trial / back up…the fact that it totally surprised me and I then stopped using my Nikon stuff for a while is a testament to M43. Thanks and take care🙏

Thanks Richard! I think many of us have a story of a Bangkok cabbie! The high ISO look pretty good. Any denoising post?

Great stuff Richard! I was blown away when all of a sudden you had the video of the rail. You nailed him! It made the hunt feel like I was right there with you. I also enjoyed when you brought out the potential mosquito repellent. I spent my career working on mosquitoes and I have to admit I'm not sure if that was a proper mosquito repellent or a room deodorizer. Finally not to whinge because I think you do a great job. But I think you could push the shutter speed up, and the ISO up and use a Denoising software like DXO or Topaz and it might make your life and your photos better. Keep it going mate. Cheers, Scott.

@@ScottRitchie-bw9ls cheers Scott for a great comment. I do often raise my ISO to pretty high levels but felt on that particular day that I didn't want to go too high because for birds in flight the detail is already lower than stationary birds and really high ISO can compromise that. Did you see my last video where I shoot at iso 25,600?

Thanks for sharing, like those shots for swallows, I got Z8+ 180~600 zoom, but couldn't take the picture for swallow in a good condition, I got your word, prefocus, will try it next time. Curious about the setting you made, did you set up the priority by S ? And let ISO go auto?

@@ironmanjimmy Hi and thank you for commenting. I was in manual mode...I just decided that I would try 1/2500 and F5.6 and keep it at those settings. And yes auto ISO👍👍And yes yes pre focusing is soooo important!! Thank you🙏
