Completely agree. The OM1 does not have an expiration date and is still a great camera. I was really looking forward to getting the new lens, but I feel OM System's pricing for a rebranded and tweaked full frame Sigma lens is outrageous so it's a pass for me.
Spend a little more get the 300mm pro. Can use the 1.4 and 2.0 TC sharp as a tack and a tiny bit lighter than the 150-400 of course not as flexible not as $$ either but I love both lens ❤
Richard wise and honest words.... the OM ambassadors and dealers the first to get the new model will tell you how great it is !! as they said when the OM 1 came out... I am sure it is a very good BUT I love my OM1 I will put the extra money towards the 300mm f4 ......
And get the best lenses. Even used like new 300 will rock your socks off. Lately I have seen used like new 150-400 for $1000 less. Buy from reputable sites not eBay private parties. Even with an OM mark 3 slap a pro lens on there, yeah no bird setting but ya know ya get what ya pay for. I’m such a novice and I’m getting good shots but raw needs proper editing as well.
Since I bought the OM1 - 15 months ago I haven’t checked out any camera reviews until the G9ii - it’s that good. The OM1 is exceptional as a birding camera. I used the 300mm f4 + 1.4 TC for a year and bought the 150-400mm f4.5. In retrospect, the 300mm + 1.4 converter is more than enough. The bigger lens gives you a bit more reach but not much. Both are as sharp as each other - no difference. However the 150-400mm lens is a must have for video but not stills because you need a variety of focal lengths for editing. The new MKii isn’t enough to upgrade because the video features haven’t been improved. I don’t sell my photos or print posters. The OM 1 is all you need.
I agree with you 100%. Besides that when I researched replacing my Sony gear it was to get a lighter setup as a walk around bird stills photographer. The OM-1 reviews by ambassadors and others invariably put lighter weight as a key advantage of the OM-1 followed by AF and then other features that come in the package, eg fps, pro capture, ND filters etc. Many also said that with modern day Denoise software low light was not the issue it use to be. These same people are now defending the new camera and lens. 2400mm with a x2tc? How often do you want that. What happened to heat haze at even 600mm ffe being a problem. Plus two stops for light. Plus carrying around a tripod. Certainly not a camera to buy if you already own an OM-1 just buy the OM 300 f4 PRO and x1.4 TC. As you and others say, master what you have and if that is an OM-1 you can do great things. The flexibility of the OM 100-400 for frame filling closer shots is pretty good too. If I didn’t have an OM-1 I would buy the mark ii, but not the lens.
Refreshing to see a non-biased video. I watched several of the Olympus ambassadors and all said they would upgrade (surprise!) but I just can't see it for the minimal improvements the camera offers.. I just bought the OM-1 a couple of months ago and it is so far above my skills that I'll be keeping it a long time. Loved the comment where you said "save your money and spend it on a good trip" (or something like that). Excellent advice! Thanks for posting.
I agree with everything you said , the OM-1 is brilliant as is the 300mm f4 , i looked at the new 150-600mm but i even doubt it will be sharper than the 300mm with the MC-20 2x converter plus its heavy ,i get shots with the 300mm because it light weight and fast and i do not want to lose that.
Thank you Stephen. Yes the 300mm is not only super sharp but its size and weight make it so practical and convenient. I often hold it low down with 1 hand. Take care🙏👍😀💪
Honestly the G9II made filming a lot easier for me than with the OM-1 version 1. LOL I must be lazy 😂. I didn't lose much on this trade-in luckily. I didn't regret it, as the AF is far more stable for video in the G9II. As I also do sometimes commercial filming the AF is far more trustworthy now and I feel more confident when using it. I still have one OM-1 for stills. Next week I have planned to go for a demo at a nearby camera store. Than I will have the chance to decide if the upgrade is worth it.
@@RichardCookphotography Today I was able to try out the OM-1II. Something I noticed was that there was a different font in the viewfinder. Unfortunately circumstances did not make it possible to really try out the OM-1II for birds with the 150-400mm. Outside the store there where almost no birds or they were too far away so the bird detection did not recognize them. Because it didn't have the proper AF settings programmed it was hard to compare. It took me quite a long time to do it with my own camera. The 150-600mm felt well build and a nice upgrade from a 100-400mm. In my case I won't buy it as it is heavier and bigger than the 150-400mm. I also didn't like the external zoom. The good news was the store owner said that OM-system is investigating to see what is possible to add to the OM-1 mark I via firmware of the features from the mark II. I didn't verify it with the OM sales rep. Don't know which source it is from. Really hope it is true. The second hand value of the OM-1 they offered by the store was crappy. They offered me a 1000 euro. That is just 45% of the original value for a camera with very low shutter count and minor wear. Spending another 1400 for a relative small update. I will wait personally for what OM will bring later on.
@@eelco6587 Interesting findings. I think sitting tight for a while might be a good idea…you could still buy it down the road…once more is known about its performance. 🙏👍😀
I purchased two OM-1 cameras in the last few months for my wife and I, but kept our G9’s which still are perfectly fine for general photography. Partially on your recommendation I picked up a mint used Oly 300mm from MPB and have been very pleased with it. Thank you. I will not be getting the new OM-1 mk II as it is just too soon after our cash outlay for the apparently incremental improvements. Do you still use your Nikon D500 with the 500 PF lens? I can’t seem to let mine go even though the Oly 300mm with the 1.4 TC seems to equal in sharpness.
I still have both the D500 and the lens and also can’t get rid of them. I haven’t used them for a while but definitely want to again. I haven’t left Nikon permanently yet… just keeping an eye on them from afar. Thanks for stopping by🙏👍😀💪
I fully agree with what you said and I will not buy the new Mark II but as an OM-1 user I sincerely hope that, as they have always indicated and promised us, an update will also arrive relating to AF only because AF tracking on people was already poor originally (compared to other brands). The OM-1 is a fabulous machine and I would buy it again and I also understand that the release of this new model was a must in order not to fall behind the releases of competing brands (see Panasonic G9II), but the promises should be kept.
Having never watched any of your previous videos before till this appeared on my feed . Imo It's good to see an honest Togger on this site . Decided to Subscribe ..
Hi Richard. I’m certainly not saying they aren’t worthy photographic tools… I mean I haven’t even seen them. I’m just stating I don’t need them. However I’m very happy for you to experience that lovely feeling when we get a new camera or lens and play with it for the first time. Enjoy them both👍🙏😃
A very practical video and I like your philosophy of “do I really need it?” I am very much the same. I was thinking about getting the OM1 but all my pictures are for personal use and I am happy with what I take even though the OM1 would be a significant upgrade. With me it’s the same with watches. Do I really need another watch?
Thanks so much Lawrence. If you are happy with your pictures…then there is really no need to upgrade. All camera released in the last 10 years can take great pictures👍🙏😀
My thoughts exactly Richard. To me it’s a very limited upgrade of a camera which I regard as absolutely fit for my purpose in its original iteration. Also the lens is a beast much too heavy to spend all day carrying. The 300 mm is a brilliant lens and I would not swap this for anything else. My credit card will stay firmly in my wallet! Your iPhone shots are excellent showing that the person behind the lens is what really matters.
You make a good point that one should develope their skills, and optimisew thier current kit, before jumping to the next best thing. My only caveate would be if the upgrade really corrects for asome shortfalls in the orginal camera. I use Canon R5. And the rolling shutter is shocking! You have a good eye and sense of composition! (from your pics).
Thanks so much Scott. You are of course right regarding a genuine upgrade…if one is struggling with the camera and a different camera will definitely provide better results.. most people would upgrade including me…in my case at the moment I see no need. Can still develop my skills using my current gear. Thank you again and take care🙏👍😀💪

Hence I avoid buying used luxury goods in person.
I agree with you. New gear doesn’t make you a better photographer. A new version of a camera doesn’t make the previous one bad. The new lens has taken a lot of heat for being too big and heavy. It is 200 grams heavier than than 150-400 Pro. It doesn’t seem so bad to me. I do not recall a weight discussion on the white one. I have the 100-400mm. If I hadn’t I would buy the new 150-600 more reach but most important sync-is. Will I buy an OM-1 mark 2? Maybe but I will have to sell one of my OM-1’’s first. I do not need 3 bodies. :-)
Some good points. I wonder if you could trade in one of the OM1s and add some cash for the mkII. If I had just the 100400 I would also consider the 150-600 being that the 150-400 is a lot of money. Good luck with your decisions. 👍🤞🙏
I hope not because I still really enjoy the original camera they made. I haven’t seen how much it is going to cost. I will check online. Thanks so much for the comment 🙏👍😀💪
Great Channel Richard and fair comments regarding whether the new upgrades on the OM-1ii are worth upgrading to.I personally love using the OM-1 having left behind Canon full frame R5 to go Olympus and i am well impressed with the quality from these M43 files, and do not regret the change.Yes the OM-1 is still a great camera and it will continue to be appreciated by many Olympus / OM-Systems users..Yes i agree the camera should have had software tweaks to improve the focusing, and facial recognition...I experienced this as a Canon user..they bring out 5D4 and we scream , yeah the 5D3 should have already been a 5D4 because of poor focussing issues 😃 I will buy the new version OM-1ii because they have refined and improved an already great camera! plus added a few software tricks that i can use.We all have to decide if the upgrades are worth spending on now, or wait until we see better value for dollars spent.
Amazing shots nice compositions with the iphone I recently have the 15pro Max it does 48mp or 12mp low light they call it raw goes up to 30s so might give it a go for some astro when the UK sky is a bit better. I agree with you on the lens choice 300mm F4. The zoom definitely doesn't interest me either, it's very odd a heavy full frame design Sigma clone of a Sony variant. OM1 II isn't upgrade enough. If they had added 4k120 maybe. The Grad ND seems a very nice addon though not a deal breaker. UK grey market a new OM1 goes for £1185 an OM1 II they want £2194. I think the older one might be a better buy anyway even for someone new looking into it.
Thanks so much. I’m sure that 15 pro max could get some great results. Would love to give the 30 sec a go and see how it does. The Oly 300mm is still such a compelling choice. Thanks again Take care🙏👍😀
I agree with what you’re saying, I’ve just came over to Olympus a few weeks ago from Sony to go lighter. Happy with the OM-1. Not interested going back to a heavy lens (2kg+). Be interested to find out if the autofocus in the OM-1 MK2 is a SUBSTANTIAL improvement over the current OM-1 (I guess it probably isn’t substantial). I’ve found the OM-1 bird AF is very good for my needs and skill level. I’m interested to see if Panasonic respond and bring out a physically smaller Leica 150-600mm for the M4/3. 😉 I may (or may not) buy the new OM-1 ii in the next 18months or so if and when the prices come down substantially or when Olympus do their cash back promotions. But I’m not in a rush to replace this OM-1 that I purchased only a few weeks ago.
Hi Tony and thanks for the comment. I think it is very sensible…sit tight and wait and see if anything really compelling comes up and in the mean time keep enjoying the already great OM1. I have a load of vids using the OM1 so feel free to peruse at your leisure!👍😀😀🙏
Agree. 150-600 would be fine if I shot from hides. I hike with my gear. Had a big sigma in past when I shot canon to heavy. OM-1 ii. Jury still out. Would not jump on right away for sure because like you say there are a couple trips I want to do and would rather spend $$$ on that. Like you am very happy with current OM-1 and 300 f4 for my wildlife photography. Cheers
I feel the same way and am quite happy to stay with my OM-1. (Actually I am looking forward to an OM-5 II as a backup body, if it comes out as a shrunken OM-1, as previous releases would suggest!) A quick question for you Richard: are you usually shooting birds in SH2 25fps then? I tend to just use silent sequential as I oddly prefer the blackout between frames as visual feedback. But I am considering switching to an SH2 mode if it will give me more shots in focus.
Hi and thank you. No i only use SH2 in 50 fps and that is rarely. I am also usually in silent sequential and switch to SH2 for those rare moments that something good and fast is going to happen. Take care🙏😀👍
OM-1 Mk II doesnt need to be shot at 50 fps -there is an option for 25 fps using SH2 or a few lower frame rates when not using ProCap SH2, alll adequate for the serious shooter for wildlife........
I think you do a fantastic job with your OM-1 Richard and I doubt the Mark 11 would benefit you..... I still live in hope of upgrading and the OM-1 or OM-1 mark 11 would benefit me immensely......especially the IS as I have a tremor caused by chemo which still hasn't gone! Also other features would help me because of my declining eyesight (caused by Glaucoma and chemo).... It's been a bit of a blow for me going from some pretty good macro shots to crappy shots because of the tremors! Also lousy night shots (aurora related) because I have issues manual focusing on the light source available..... May I add, the OM-1 will cease production with the release of the OM-1 Mark 11 so once current stocks are sold....there will be no more OM-1 produced.....that was released on the OM-1 site....
Hi Susie. I didnt know that about the OM1 ..2 years seems quite a short shelf life for a new camera. I hope for your sake and others who are interested in buying it…that that is just a rumor. It seems like some of the features on the original and new OM1 would be really beneficial to you. The IS on mine is really good. I hope 2024 sees some improvements in your health so that you can get out and take some photos and maybe even get a new camera. Thank you and take care. 🙏🤞💪😀🌸
I am reserving judgement until a few independent reviewers get the hardware. If the OM-1ii AF is noticeably better then I might get one. Or not. Better video AF would be appreciated. I will probably hold off on the lens as well. I think I would end up disappointed with it. I had a Sigma 150-600 Canon EF that I used with my R6 for the better part of a year while the RF 100-500 was hard to find. It was a perfectly nice lens handicapped because of Canon’s 3rd party policy. It caused inconsistent AF. Not the lens’s fault. The OM version is somewhat more compact than what I had so I don’t think the size would be an issue but I have gotten used to a really sharp lens with the 300mm F4. My Sigma was sharp but not as sharp as the 300. For that kind of money I find it to be a reasonable option.
Hi Rod and thanks for the comment. I am hoping the AF has definitely improved and as I said I think there will be some nice feature improvements. If when said independent reviewers get hold of it and if they say the AF has improved massively…I still think I won’t get it. I just can’t justify buying a new camera every 2 years. If I was rich that would be another matter. Can totally understand why people would want it though especially if the AF leap is significant🙏👍
As I tried to verbalize in the video…the camera could be really good and some of the improved features look interesting but not enough for me to spend a lot of money on a camera I had no plans to upgrade to. Take care 🙏👍😀

When I saw new OM lens, started to check those FF bodiez again...
What lens are you using now?
@@RichardCookphotography Mainly Oly 300mm f4 +/- mc14. Not like I am complaining, Oly tools are good, but future for this system is becoming hazy...
@@nikaberzina2478 The 300mm is a wonderful lens though. I try not to be completely fixed onto 1 brand.. always good to have options
Great video I agree with you Om 1 is a great camera
Thanks Keith🙏🙏
I am sticking with the om1 mk1 also some very nice shots there mate the Iphone does take some very nice pictures 👍👍
Cheers Wayne. I appreciate it. Both the IPhone and the OM2 take great pictures. They should do me right for the foreseeable 🙏👍😀
Got it in one 👍😎
Thanks Mike. Take care🙏👍😀
That’s great advice, thank you.
No problem. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Appreciate it🙏👍😀
Cheers
Thank you. Yes the current OM1 is still a great performer and fun camera to use. That new lens would be quite heavy for hiking I think👍😀🙏💪
You are right thank a lot
Thanks, Glad you agree!
@RichardCookphotography We all try to improved our gears but not ourself 555
OM-1 Mk II doesnt need to be shot at 50 fps -there is an option for 25 fps using SH2 or a few lower frame rates when not using ProCap SH2, alll adequate for the serious shooter for wildlife........
The original also has this option. SH2 can be shot at 25 fps instead of 50. Thanks for your comment👍
Honesty. Love it.
Thanks so much. Take care🙏👍😀
❤ love the video I agree with you 💯
Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great day and why not check out some of my other vids🙏👍💪
Are you aware that you can change the FPS in SH2? I found that 25 FPS is just right.
I am aware yes. I usually just switch between silent sequential 20fps and SH2 50fps. Thank you🙏👍😀
I am reserving judgement until a few independent reviewers get the hardware.
9:46 - What I hear you saying is you really want this new OM-1 mark ii. 😂
As I tried to verbalize in the video…the camera could be really good and some of the improved features look interesting but not enough for me to spend a lot of money on a camera I had no plans to upgrade to. Take care 🙏👍😀
Nice images.
Thank you. The location is nice…I didn’t do much🙏👍
i may force to upgrade to mk2 because of the human AI, the om-1 face detect and eye af was not reliable
If it’s better that would be a good reason to upgrade for sure👍
👍👍👌👌👌👌✌✌😊😊❤❤

I'am in the mid sixties, and have dysleksia. Therefore I prefer to use emjoys....@@RichardCookphotography
I don’t see much worth the upgrade. Most of the core components are the same.
Thanks for the comment. Yes that would seem to be the case. I’m not saying the upgrades won’t be beneficial to some but just not so much me👍🙏😀
