If I was going to build new instruments. I would take into account modern scientific ways. I would follow Doctor Nagyvary's work with woods and varnishes. I would use CNC routing machines to route the basic shapes from what is known and then use traditional methods to fine tune it. I would use modern glues instead of hyde glues. Of course the purists will scream to high heavens but all you need to do is to prove them wrong. Very fine instruments should be for the common folk also. The old makers did this with their level of tech available. Why should it stop with them? I bet someone will find a better material than pine woods form a specific forest in Italy soaked in salt water. Metalic alloys perhaps. It will be a hybrid that takes the best of all worlds.

Is that just a standard bar of soap that you use to keep glue from sticking to your form? Or is it a bar of wax or something else?

Please tell me how to find the location of the bass bar? It's the same way, like a violin?

Lucas, you take for granted the amount of time and effort that goes into producing such a beautiful instrument that mimics the human voice from bass/baritone all the way up to soprano. Lucas, is there such a thing as a world cello registry? What does the serial # 10735 signify? Was this cello built in 1943? My cello was built in Germany. Please advise me.

Thank you for these wonderful videos. Really lets one appreciate just how much work and craftsmanship is going into a fine instrument such as this! I'm just wondering, what is the original weight of the plates, and what is the final weight? It seems like a lot of beautiful maple is being discarded in the process... probably can't be avoided, but still a little sad. Wouldn't it be nice if you could "scoop out" some of the center stock for making smaller instruments? (Not practical, I know...)

Hi there. These videos are extremely helpful for me as I am a complete novice at building stringed instruments. Did you build your own forms? If so, do you have videos on how you created them? Templates, measurements, etc.? If I can buy them (or the templates to build them), where can I buy them?

The akusticus is really a very good tailpiece for many cellos -- not even considering the low price. I. would say that for rather bright sounding instruments it could even be the best option. For me I do have a bois d`harmony on a cello which is rather dark sounding and it is a bit brighter or maybe can produce more overtones than the Akusticus. I am not really convinced that the two other wooden tail pieces introduces here are better options for this very cello, but i guess that could have something to do with the sound my computer produces ( have to listen with good headphones again I. guess)...

What about resale value? When this sustainability fad peters out nobody’s going to want an instrument made from fake wood. Why not just use aluminum? Ugh.

thank you so much for your comparison that is from the point of view of an amateur sound engineer and musician, very satisfying: you made a very comparable recording setup, side by side on the same piece and cello. Amazing work! And it put an end to debate for some that tailpiece is not significantly impacting the sound but for loudness and response. The sun is clearly different in these examples. I wish there were more videos reviewing them. I hope that you might consider do some more in the future. Very impressive work on that. The reason I looked at your video is I am curious about a cello I have that has a bass bar with two high spots, above and below about where the bridge is and it dips in the center where the bridge is, not the standard shape. I do not know the maker so i was wondering if you know who the maker would be by that unusual bass bar design. It has a restoration label dated in the 1940's by someone in Philadelphia. thank you good luck

Why do you make the back out of two pieces? I’ve heard one piece is better. Is that not true?

I saw the flexible taper pattern jig you used to mark the back/top of the scroll, is something like this commercially available for sale?

Winner is the bogaro and clemente, cello sounds better and from the way he played, I can tell that he felt more comfortable to play on that endpin since he was playing much more in tune and relaxed. Thanks for the video ! Next time I’m in Cremona I’ll visit you :)
