    The idea of these videos is to give a "realistic" view on the whole process involved in making an instrument and not just the "fun" part, as well as showing how much attention to detail and time is necessary during every step of the construction.
    These videos take a long time to make so comment, like, subscribe if you like them so I know to keep making more!

    Great videos, thanks so much for sharing. I held my breath at various points, as any mistake would be so expensive in time spent and materials - but your technique is obviously not going to allow that!

      Thank you very much for your comment (that helps the channel a lot!) and for your kind words :)
      Haha, it’s strange but when I look back at the videos I feel like it’s far more risky than when I’m actually doing it 🙃

    Hey, Lucas! Long time no see! Anyway, I was holding my breath the whole time you were sawing and cutting out the f-holes --- you make it look so easy!!!! They came out BEAUTIFULLY! By the way, I finished my cello at the end of July (took me 8 months to build it!) --- it was the greatest experience, it came out okay, and now I am teaching myself to play it (slowly). I am loving your posts here on building this cello!

      Hi!! It's nice to hear back from you!! :)
      Yes, I saw it and I'm sure it was a lovely and exhausting experience! Something you'd like to repeat? Or once in a lifetime event? (and 8 months is not much! Trust me haha)
      How is playing on it going? I know it's not the easiest instrument to learn!

      @@LucasFabro Thanks for getting back to me! It WAS one of the best experiences, and definitely challenging and exhausting (but in a good way). I had no idea it would take that long --- the funny thing is, when I made the label, of course I had to glue it in way before the cello was finished, so I was making a guess as to when it would be finished, since I always put the finishing date on the label. I guess-timated July 2021, and, sure enough, I finished it on July 31st! Weird, huh? As for will I repeat it....no, I very much doubt it, as it did take such a long time, especially as I now am concentrating on learning how to play it (just on my own, with books and RUclips videos, no teacher --- too expensive to take lessons). I had a teeny-tiny head start, as I have played violin ever since third grade, so, while cello isn't quite the same, I still had some basic ideas of how to hold the left and right hands somewhat properly and naturally, and I already know how to read music. It's been fun.

      @@kathmatsushita haha, I just hope you didn't rush it only so that it could fit in July 21 :p
      I only put the year on my instruments, and many times it's "wrong", in the sense that I might put '21 because it's when I'm closing the soundbox but I actually finish the scroll or varnishing and setting it up in '22. But I guess it's the same for most of us.
      I'm glad that you're enjoying it and that you don't find it so difficult!

      @@LucasFabro That's funny...No, I didn't rush it. In fact, I had kind of forgotten about the "July" I had put on the label; then, when I finally DID finish it, it only then occurred to me that I had made my deadline!!! Ha ha. The varnishing (Hammerl oil varnish kit) took me about 1-1/2 to 2 months to totally "finish". I just bought the Suzuki method books for cello a couple of days ago, and just yesterday found a RUclips playlist that has cello accompaniments to all the pieces in the first 3 Suzuki books --- I find playing along to some accompaniment is so much more fun than just doing the exercises alone. I was wondering.....do you play the cello?

    Lucas, I have a question about the f holes. Are they shaped that way for any particular reason? Is it just decorative? Could they be another shape and still perform the same function? Thank you for this series! I am truly appreciative of the time and effort that went into producing the videos!

    • @LucasFabro

      Thank you so much for your comment and your questions!
      I guess the answers are yes and no. It's decorative, but it's not just decorative. If there were no f-holes then the sound wouldn't come out of the soundbox which means there'll be no sound!
      At the same time, could it be another shape? Sure, in the previous instruments they were "C" shaped. Would changing the shape also change the sound? Absolutely. Making the f-holes even a few millimiters wider, narrower, shorter, longer, etc. has an affect on the sound.
      Keep in mind as well that the pointy part of the f-hole indicates the position of the bridge.
      Thank you so much again for the nice comment!

    I have a question that might appear strange. Is the tape on the templates non-acid? Or it doesn't matter for wood, the varnish and other materials, which will be used on top of the place where the tape might have transfered acids on the wood? Almost forgot to say that it's very interesting to watch. Fantastic video and work

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  2 года назад +1

      To be completely honest, I've never really thought about it, but the answer is most definitely not. If I tried to varnish straight after just the way it is then yes, it could be a problem, not only the acidity but also the fact that...well, it's glue haha. But as the tape stays there for a very very short amount of time and it's only in contact with the msot "superficial" layer of the wood, which is then going to be refinished anyways, then it's not really an issue.
      Thank you very much for the kind words and for leaving a comment :)

    Very nice video, very nice F holes!
    I have a question I've been thinking of for a while, this might be a good time to ask it:
    When you are copying Fs from an original instrument, I have no idea if the Fs on the back of a Strad poster is taken from an image or traced from the violin, but I assume it's a flat image like what you're using here. Don't you get a fair bit of deformation/squeeze on the F when you're already seeing it from the top and not square on the hole, and then drawing it back on a curved surface?
    And also, do you position your F holes by thedistance to the center or the distance to the edge? I have just used the center distance, but I think a few of my Fs end up looking a bit too far from the edge, especially since I've started doing higher archings. May not be an issue, but I would like to make a compromise if increasing the upper eye distance is not detrimental?

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  2 года назад +2

      Thank yo uvery much! And they are very good questions!
      In regards to the Strad posters then I'm really not sure, I think that they're supposed to be square to the f-hole but many times I've seen that if you put them on top of the photo of the instrument they look exactly the same. What I do is trying to modify them a bit in advance by taking the measurements that they're supposed to be or something like that. I tried with Autocad but wasn't super succesful yet (I'll keep trying though). In the case of these f-holes I'm using ones from another instrument by the same maker but that are much nicer and the photos were already correct.
      To position them, the first thing I always do is marking the diapason and then taking the distance from the center to the eyes. Then the other things are less important to me (but I'm guessing this is a personal approach). That being said, with cellos the distance to the eyes is not as clear and "standard" as it is with the violins, so it might be that you have to increase the distance from the center to the eyes indeed! Sorry for the answer not answer haha

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 2 года назад

      Haha, I know it's not an easy one, but I did actually learn something from your not answer anyway :-P
      I think the approach you describe is pretty much what I've been doing, but I still think sometimes the distance from the top of the F to the C looks a bit big. I'm thinking the width of the "wing" must be somewhat important to especially the top of the instrument. But then again, so is the width between the eyes, so I'm still a bit torn :-P

    • @LucasFabro
      @LucasFabro  2 года назад +1

      @@Tostra1997 Oh, yes! I guess you can say that size...I mean, distance, matters :p
      That area in between the f-holes and the borders can influence on the harmonics so much, and the overall flexibility of the instrument as well...But of course, that will also happen by changing the distance in between the eyes...so it's a tricky one haha

    • @Tostra1997
      @Tostra1997 2 года назад

      Haha, I bet!
      Can you roughly say what effect each distance has? II would imagine a smaller distance to the edge makes the wings less stiff and make the overtones/top register softer, but more quickly responding? And making the eye distance wider might make the tone broader/more powerful, but "stiffer"? Is that reasonable to think?
      I haven't experimented with it, so those are just guesses 😛
      And of course... In the end, everything is a compromise, and there is no perfect solution. I know ;-)
