1 Simple Drill to Improve Your Step Phase
Just like the simple hop phase cycle drill, this step march drill can be a game-changer in improving your ability to hit and maintain positions - and speed - in your step phase.
Don't think that because it's a simple and easy drill to do that it's not impactful. Pay close attention to your positions and posture, and this can help you triple jump further.

    So I recently reworked my run up and all my phases (mainly 1st) and so I carry speed significantly better. However it feels way to fast for me to get a real 2nd or 3rd phase. I just end up sort of quickly stumbling through the 2nd and 3rd after the 1st phase. Is there anything I can do to help with that.

    With such low height the weight force could be incremented of few points percentage..something very few compared to an average squat performed by an elite sprinter which is even again less compared to the weight force producted in real athletic motion

    YOU’RE BACK!!! Yessss. I’ve been hoping you’d come back with your quality videos soon. I love the in-depth explanations. How many times would you say you’ve programmed these position drills into each week of your training? Also, can you show us how to do the double and single arm over that female athletes typically learn?

    • @oolamigoke
      @oolamigoke 18 дней назад

      Glad you’re enjoying the detailed breakdowns, and glad to be back! I would do these drills during the warm up before every jump session so you can rehearse the proper mechanics, then apply them soon after. I can also do a video covering that arm technique, but it’s not something I’ve ever used… so maybe I’ll do a review of an athlete who does.

    Awesome glad you are back. Please forget to give your thoughts on double arm vs single arm in TJ. Asking because I notice girls typical stick to single arm and I was wondering why.

    • @oolamigoke
      @oolamigoke 18 дней назад

      Female jumpers tend to use single arm movements because the general consensus is that “they don’t develop enough force using the double arm”. This may be true at younger ages, but I don’t think it truly applies at the elite level. Case in point: Thea LaFond (2024 World Indoor Champion and 15m jumper) has been using the double arm technique for years now to great success. She and I were actually training together around the time when she decided to try out the double arm technique. The rest is history. So I think the reason why women tend to use single arm technique over double arm is at least in part to them being taught that at a young age. However, when they mature physically and develop strength, they stick with single arm because it’s what they know, not because they’re incapable of using the double arm. Hope that helps!

    • @oolamigoke
      @oolamigoke 18 дней назад

      Used well, they’re great! Uphill is good for resisted running which can develop power. Everybody can benefit from that. Downhill is great for overspeed work, but that should probably be reserved for more experienced athletes.

    • @oolamigoke
      @oolamigoke 29 дней назад

      This is correct👆🏿 I’m cautious about how I cue the drop leg, because when you cycle properly with the active leg, the drop leg *should* take care of itself. I’ll see what I can do about a video for it though.

    Thank you so much, Olu! I may be watching this 4 years into the future, but I must say, your focus on quality over quantity has brought real value to many individuals, myself included. To be honest, I think that the impact you made was (and continues to be) much more powerful than the impact of many of the bigger youtube channels out there - simply because the advice you give is so applicable and genuine, and the audience you have really wants to hear it. I did wish to share a brief story of mine, in case you don't mind. When I started out in the triple jump my 8th grade year, I had never done sports before. I spent most of that year (and my freshman year of high school) in utter pain. I was way behind all of the other athletes at my school, and my triple jump was on the lower end - 30 feet at best. I wasn't sure if I should continue, but I decided to stick with it to improve my health, if nothing else. However, I never stopped working at my improvement. My sophomore year summer, I worked out every morning, doing plyometrics and weightlifting with the soccer team. That got me into shape fast, but I wasn't used to having so much power. I sprained my wrist, my ankle, and my hip during my sophomore year as I got used to having a different body, and I did my best to recover each time. As I hit my indoor track season, I was shocked to realize just how much improvement I had made. I hit 37.5 feet before states, and even though I didn't make it in, I was able to have some fun and enjoy my time at every event. Then, between my indoor and outdoor seasons, I found this channel, taking the first piece of advice I gathered: bounding, bounding, bounding! I did as much bounding as possible during my outdoor season, and I was able to hit 39 feet before it was over. Though I know I will most likely not be a serious competitor beyond my high school or college years, I have learned one critical thing from track and field - I have to push where it hurts the most. There are few ways to become exceptional that don't involve working past weak areas and tough times. So again, thank you, Olu, for everything that you do. I will continue to refer to this channel as I finish out my high school career. It is a truly inspiring piece of work.
