i did watch both 1989 and 2024 to see which version i like . And i do prefer the 1989 anime . So now i'm going to read the manga
After I saw the headline that Ranma 1/2 is getting a remake on Netflix, I clicked and watched all of it. Show is hilarious 😂
I like both of them. It's cool getting new ranma content even if it doesn't feel like the old anime. Honestly I'd rather have the new one feel like a different adaptation instead of just retreading the old show.
The problem isn't that it's different, the problem is the fact that it is ironically retreading ground that the original already covered just in a less interesting way, at least to me. If you disagree with that that's fine. I just don't want there to be any misunderstandings about why I compare these shows and why I prefer one over the other.
The remake for the whole Cho episode sucked ass. Directing in the OG is still king.
I can't even tell if OG UY has filler. They're really good episodes maybe a few I didn't love but they're not bad I just didn't enjoy them
I hope it's just a matter of cramming material that has already been covered, and they'll get better soon when story goes beyond what we've already seen. The HxH reboot got much better art and music by the time the Chimera arc is progressing. Meanwhile, the new art style and music in Kenshin are not (yet) that interesting. As a biased fan of the original, what puts me off the most is Kenshin's voice and Megumi's more generic design.
Lum isn't entirely innocent in the original anime but I think the animation team had a soft spot for her so some aspects of her character were softened just a little. She's still pretty posessive of Ataru, she's got a bit of a history of not being the best friend or self absorbed sometimes. But the OG anime is far kinder to her character. Which is fair because for Takahashi - Lum was originally this one shot character and the series was gonna have other wacky things happen to Ataru as part of the series with Shinobu as the long suffering girlfirend. After one chapter without her - the Okatu fans sent so many requests for her to come back that Ateru's friends were originally written in as those Otaku that just really wanted Lum back - which happened for the following chapters after. The original takes a bit more from the original manga and they stay more "straight" with the Manga so you get more of Lum being not only posessive, but also being almost deliberately malicious against Shinobu or Ataru. Where the OG anime generally tries to have Ateru or someone else do something on purpose or via misunderstanding to earn her ire.
The new series has a lack of comedic timing which the original excelled at. They cram way too much into these new episodes and the show suffers because of it. The teacher your referencing in the new series, is the teacher later in the original series though. He is featured in some classic episodes as well as Beautiful Dreamer.
I am really confused on how anyone who loves the 90s version could say anything positive about the reboot. The colours are awful, the animation a complete disaster, the drawing, the new OST is so dull whilst the old one was so iconic. For me it’s a complete fail and all the fun aspect of the old one is totally failed and missed !! 🥹
Speaking as a creator. Poor Takahashi, it's a shame how western society is butchering her hard work :(
XYZ is available on Netflix in Hong Kong!!
they should have just remade the original in 4k. that would have been all
I can't stress enough that greninja could've thrown the shuriken at the ground and have won.
Thanks. I've been wondering what people think of the new version, and it's been so long since I've seen the old one this really helped. One thing you didn't mention is the music. I prefer the music from the old version. I though maybe I was just being nostalgic, but now I'm sure. It was better before.
Yeah the music was phenomenal in the old one. I mentioned it once but I probably should have gone into some more. It was a big part of the feel of the original show and it's approach to conveying the romance in the story. That young innocence and sweet nostalgia is so present in the og soundtrack.
The whole feel of OG FMA was better from the concept of the Homunculi to the war dramaesque sound track. The ending was really the only thing that drug it down for me.
There was no need to remake Ranma 1/2 -- what Netflix should have done was buy the right to the original anime and then continued the story -- like Ranma and Akane in college or something like that... or actually married.
The original Ranma 1/2 has a better opening. I like the first one the best and for the dub version the same voice actor who voices light Yagami also voices Moose. It’s quite funny. 😂
i feel like the new one match better the series but the old one while i think he is weaker in term of visual and direction he still got that iconic feeling that the remake will never get
I feel like the og is funnier, the new one is more serious and the manga is a balance of both
I feel like there two reason the story move faster compare to the og anime 1 the og anime had less source material to work with 2 they wanna focus more on the story instead of the drama aspect of the og but I am sure they will have a ep or two next season to work on that drama a little bit
The detail on the oldone is amazing.
As someone who's watched the orginal and remake, I prefer both same with Urusei Yatsura. Annoyed with people constantly whinning about its not like the original, if you dont like it then dont watch it. Jeez, just go read the manga
If you don't like hearing people discuss which show they like better between the og anime and remake then just don't watch videos on that subject. Why leave comments like this when you could just click off the video? I'm not saying you can't have this opinion, I just find it extremely hypocritical when people rely on this logic not realizing they are doing the exact thing they're criticizing others for.
I cannot imagine the pressure and expectations of trying to adapt this iconic show, and satisfy old fans and newcomers. I admit that I'm still wondering WHY anyone would choose to do this, but it's not like I'm upset about it. I just hope that in this first season they can really make it "theirs" and that it can stand on its own merits.
I understand your take here, but I would only agree with you, but only if they had paced this to fit 6 episodes it should have been, versus thr 25 episodes it felt like it was (was 20+ eps?). With that being the case, it it made the shift very jarring and boring; going shift from and action/adventure drama to a incredibly slowly paced philosophical drama, bromance, and tragic unrequited love story - all with a DEEP decline in animation & art quality. Again this season should have taken 6 episodes, not the long slog that it was. This was worsened by the ever distracting tremendous decline in animation quality, and art quality in general - something which onl6 exacerbated my disinterest. I did managed to get through it, but I can't say I enjoyed it. While "Brave" it may been to make a lower-budget second season, to a acclaimed first season that revolved around brutal combat-centric drama, to be show show based upon pacifist & self-discovery while farming; wise it not (I'm my humble opinion). It almost felt like they made this on the cheap while waiting for the Manga to release more chapter. Or maybe they were just milking the IP before delving back into the plot points that most watchers were interested in, so they made this to fill the gap on shoestring budget. I don't know the cause, but this was some of the worst pacing I've ever actually watched; I was hoping something would spark onlur Main Character into action, or move the plot foward farther then: mire talking, more farming, and an impediment to farming. Instead, we got a bromance and tragic unrequited love story - which would have been fine, in 6 episodes. The ending 3 episodes would been better suited as the suited to pad out to half the season, and the boring ploy develoments, that were obvious from episode 2, could have been tied in a 1/3 the time spent on them. The only unpredictable was, is out.maon chatacter going to remain a boring bystander or do something in line with his training and behavior from season one. That is where the tension and story should have been focused.
The lack of heart is why i dropped the remake after just one episode. Its missing from the way they talk too
Watched Brotherhood first because everyone said it was better. It was good, but the tone always felt off. It was clearly referencing the Holocaust, but approached it from a childish view. I didn't watch '03 for the longest time because it was 'the same story' but a coworker finally convinced me. '03 got the tone perfect, and that's what makes it so much better.
As someone who watched the original version of the anime and read the manga it's actually pretty disappointing remake. The original had it all the character design, funnny moment's, the serious moment's a peak anime in my opinion which is funny because at the time i didn't even know what anime was but the remake felt rushed it was literally blitzing through the arc's it had minimal humour and let's be honest with the exception of rio, amidamaru and faust the new character designs were atrocious.
I remember being a little kid watching the Pokemon XYZ anime, and whenever Ash and/or one of his Pokemon got captured by Team Rocket, or basically anyone else, I’d yell at the TV screen and go “hey! Let them go! Leave them alone! I don’t want them to be captured forever! I don’t want Hawlucha to be captured forever! Just give them back to Ash already you stupid idiots!”
The original is always the best..... 👍🏻
0:34 what about YX kalos quest as well?
i watched the og anime run first then read manga, then remake. and you explained what i was feeling when i watched the remake. idk the dates but it's likely the og anime ran alongside the manga (as was normal back then) so the og anime had more breathing room to develop the relationship scenes. the remake is pretty faithful to the manga and because it aired more than a decade after manga's publication it packs a lot more story in an episode. direction wise i prefer the og anime. politics wise the remake (so far). pacing wise the manga. watch the og anime if you like more romance flavour. the remake for cool action (the og has this too) but has quicker paced episodes. read the manga if you get tired of the og anime's filler eps (it has a lot) and impatient for waiting more eps from the remake.
I have to Disagree the Ending MAGNIFIES the flaws to Massive extremes, Everything you said about Scott and Ramona undermining themselves is turned to 1111% in the ending and they made NEGATIVE PROGRESS.
Yeah, honestly, I think I wrote what I did about the ending to try and give takes off some kind of credit when it really didn't deserve it.
Erased: Yeah Ending was nasty and not even for the whole Mystery side of it. The Oh he went into a coma and became paraplegic because we wanted to Usurp expectations and ruin the happy ending that was Wrapping up. Charlotte: Never watched cant really say shit. FMA Veridian: Nah that ending was Amazing Straight up, Not canon but amazing AU ending. Shaman King: .... Yeah i only saw the Remake in full but Damn Even i have to say Killing Hau was a FAR FAR better ending. OG wins there. Btoom: I am just as lost as you. I didnt really care much but its ending works and was 100% sequel bait. Eh I feel its just because it was left un answered and Sequel baiting is typically a bad way to end. B-B-B-BONUS: Ao no Excorcist: I like the ending but the Revival seasons are showing me there was WAY MORE to the story than how its OG Anime Ended.
why fix something thats not broken, right?
Great video! And not because I mostly agree with your conclusions, but because I finally I found a video that has an actual analysis of the two adaptations. Most content comparing both obsesses with 1 to 1 comparisons of certain scenes and don't think of the greater context and the choices made on that level (the short comparisons get a shitton of views) One thing that I want to add and that I'm sure is of interest to you is regarding the animation in both comparisons. In short the old adaptation of Ranma 1/2 is an historic production for the anime industry, whereas the remake is just above average for today's standards. The reason for this is simple, in 1989 Rumiko Takahashi was one of THE mangaka of the moment and Ranma 1/2 was her new series so naturally the animated adaptation would gather the greatest talents of the industry at that time. Studio Deen was one of the best studios of that time and had experience adapting manga of Rumiko Takahashi (they previously did Maison Ikkoku and the latter half of Urusei Yatsura). For Ranma, they put their best in house staff in important roles e.g. their star animator Atsuko Nakajima debuted as character designer in Ranma, Kazuhiro Furuhashi was a regular episode director and is responsible for the best episodes of the whole series, among others. Additionally they had excellent freelance animators contributing regularly. Examples include Norio Matsumoto, Tadashi Hiramatsu, Atsuko Ishida, Masayuki Kobayashi, among many others (you can look up these names in animenewsnetwork to see their other works). In contrast, the remake has reliable staff but it's far from being a gathering of the most standout animators of the current industry (like Frieren or JJK). So literally the old adaptation is more sakuga than the remake. For example look at Akane's first big fight against the male students of her school in episode 2 of both versions. In the old version, it is more ambitious in everything: shot composition, number of moving characters, fighting choreography, number of cuts and is executed almost perfectly (i.e. has no animation errors). On the other hand, the remake's version of this fight is very underwhelming. This is also telling of the better adaptation choices made in the old adaptation because making Akane look like a proficient fighter here is more important than flexing on the female Ranma vs panda Genma fight of episode 1. Also, 11 episodes of the remake have aired so far and there is not a single sequence of animation that matches this one from the old adaptation. If you are interested in the animation and industry side of things when it comes to Ranma I'd gladly tell you more about it!
I actually wanted to touch on this topic a little. I didn't know much about the history behind it, but I did feel like the animation was really good in the original Ranma and specifically I felt it with Akane's first fight. Though I couldn't fit it into this video, I'm glad you brought it up and the way you dove into it was just about how I felt about it I think. It's interesting to think that studio deen was one of the best at the time, but it really shows. Another example of a well animated fight in the old version is Ranma vs Ryoga. I remember being really impressed with that fight visually in a way the remake just didn't capture.
@@etheri0n959 Oh yeah, the Ranma and Ryoga fight in episode 8 is pretty good (directed and storyboarded by Kazuhiro Furuhashi by the way). The action storyboard is very dynamic and flows very well (when they climb up and fall down from the fence is smartly edited). But in my view, only considering the stuff that the remake will cover, the most impressively animated episode of the old adaptation is Shampoo's first episode. It's constantly moving from beginning to end and there is a lot of detail in the debris animation after every hit. Also, some important stuff if you still want to make videos is to cover the horrendous misinformation there is about the old adaptation. First, many claim that the mangaka Rumiko Takahashi hated the old adaptation because it had so much filler and did changes to her story. She apparently hated it so much that she forced the anime's cancellation after 161 episodes. But that is just completely made up, confirmation bias BS because Rumiko has actually said in an interview that she loved the Ranma anime (www.furinkan.com/takahashi/takahashi20.html ) and many later manga chapters published after the anime ended actually took ideas and plot lines from anime original episodes. To top it off, the last panel of the manga is based from the final scene of the last anime episode. The other big misinformation is that the anime takes a big dip in animation quality after the first two cours, which is very wrong. Yeah, there are some episodes where the quality dips which of course there are since it's a long runner anime that aired 161 eps without major breaks, but the consistency in animation quality is among the most stable out of any long running anime. What happens is that as the series progresses, the animation staff drew designs more loosely and started deforming them more and more, which people associate with dipping quality (like Naruto vs Pain, actually an important animator from that fight was a regular Ranma animator lol). There are also regular sakuga episodes which gather the best animators of the team and have them go all out. I'd say that basically half of those are full anime original episodes (not surprising since the anime staff can create specific scenarios where the animators can go all out). Well that's enough for now lol, sorry for the wall of text.
Nah it's not a problem. This is really interesting stuff and I'll definitely make use of this if I make a future video. The interview with Rumiko is especially helpful. I've really gotten tired of people saying the old anime is disrespectful to Takahashi's vision and this interview kind of dispells that idea so thanks!
Dunno, I didn't watch the OG anime, but read the manga and so far I love the remake. It's snappy, looks beautiful w. the unique Rumiko Takahashi artstyle and so far I ain't having any complains. I wouldn't be fond of a slower pace and a stronger focus on Ranma's & Akane's relationship high & ups, cuz spoiler alert: The romance doesn't get resolved. A lot of the story strings aren't getting resolved, cuz Takahashi loves open endings and Ranma has the most aggregious one
Shiba Raito is sooo cool
I grew up with the original anime and the one thing that really through me off is the front door is in the opposite direction.
Detailed and simple VS Flashy and Shallow. There is just something about Old Techniques that just WORK better with LESS. The Hall scene is a perfect example. The 4 Background frames used are the same though out the scene. There is minimal movement and hard cuts with Talking heads but the Frameing alone sets the story and the scene is a PUNISHMENT They are NOT supposed to move because of it. But what really cinches it is the 3 Scrolling cells as it introduces the scene Its a detail NOT Need and Cheap to make with only 3 cells moving at different speeds It shows us going INTO the scene while telling us everything (As a JP student or in the know of their culture norms) what is going on without words.... NEW Version is Dynamic, lots of movement, technically superior, and so many backgrounds and angles for each flash and the Onomatopoeias the new version likes to use on screen to emulate the Manga and Comic feel... But There is Zero Framing to tell the story We see the same hard cuts, and the talking heads but its generic the hall shifts in placement for those two and consistency is low, Ranma and Akane move about teasing each other neither taking the punishment at all serious a complete contrast to their Original and Manga versions. The Quick cuts into the scene is the cherry on top. Honestly i have seen this in all the Remakes lately and even long running series... I call it the ADHD Effect. We cant have a single quiet and slow but DETAILED moment when we need it. And that Hall scene NEEDED that slow but Detailed scene. And yes I know After Ranma's first OG Season it start going down hill animation wise and the FILLER HELL of Ranma shows up. A ton of Improvement can come from there and this Mappa Style would work better in tone THERE where comedy is nearly the entire focus.... Well until the main plot shows up again. Which At least the OG still did bump the animation again during those points. But i have a feeling New Ranma is going to be like FMA:B and Hunterxhunter2011 As addons for the Non animated arcs that just speedrunned the OG Made Arcs poorly. Hybrid Anime seems to be the norm for my Generation now. taking Episodes from different versions and making the best Most Manga Accurate version themselves. Also Dont @ me HunterXHunter99 Is leagues better than 2011.
I saw the original anime at least 4 times but that was a long time ago. I really enjoyed the remakes but...I decided to rewatch the old ones after watching the remakes and I was surprised by how much funnier they are despite it being my 5th or 6th rewatch. The new ones are enjoyable but I agree the way the scenes and jokes are portrayed make the comedic timings not as good. It's like information is just being presented. While I've never read the manga and I can sympathize with manga readers for the new one being a closer representation, I'm the type that doesn't think the anime needs to parallel the manga. Motion picture is different from stills so it makes sense to change things up to tell the story in a way that benefits the respective formats.
... I like Conqueror of Shamballa myself.. mostly for the music. I watched it when it came out.. as a movie alone, it's not very good. As a conclusion to the show, it's good enough. I thought the parallel between our world's nazi and what was happening in the other world gave context. One world did a genocide cause of hate.. the other was going to do a genocide to stay young. As someone who knows a little bit of history....I believe the film was relying on the audience understanding of WW2. A Japanese audience may be more familiar with it... because they joined the Nazis. And for the window.. I believe the window was broken to show that even in a university, they aren't keeping things together. Germany was facing a depression due to them trying to pay the ally nation.. so schools and universities were not maintain and people were starving and angry.
Absolutely agree! Especially on the Humonculos difference between the source material and the 2003 anime. Much more meaningful having them be the products of failed human transmutations attempts than just Father's extra emotions. Overall the underlying human message of the 2003 one is much better even if not always handled well. The 2009 adaptation, evening having the extra knowledge from source or the 2003 comes across too superficial and action oriented to me. The irony is I probably would have liked the 2009 edition more if it had come out in 2003 when I was younger with less patience for a slower story. But I think over time the 2003 adaptations take would always win as the better humanist story.
Someday, Ash and Serena will travel with Brock ❤
XYZ and Journeys were the ONLY time ash actually had a decent battle-ready team.
I was a big fan of Shaman Kong when it came out back in the day, but I couldn't last five minutes through the remake cuz the voices in English and Japanese were trash. Maybe I'll check out the original show.
After watching the first 11 episodes of the new series, and having seen the old series when I was younger, I'm not entirely sure what to think about the remake yet. I can see and agree with most of your points, the original series had better timing and characterizations, and the animation style of the late 80's/early 90's had a wonderful aesthetic to it. The new series seems a bit flat, a lot of the comedy seems forced, and it really isn't grabbing me as an anime to want to pursue interest in it (if it wasn't for knowing how the original went, and wanting to see how the two compare, I probably would have stopped watching by episode 4). I think one of the main concerns is Ranma himself, his newer incarnation seems much more feminine and meek, often getting his butt kicked, unless in defense of Akane, he also seems much comfortable in his girl form, whereas the original version was much more masculine and prideful, even a little arrogant, but it helped add to the charm of the character and was fitting for a teenage boy, especially one with a warrior mindset(like a competitive martial artist). Original Ranma saw his girl form as a curse and was always searching for a way to end it, the remake shows female Ranma almost more then male Ranma, not really making the audience sympathetic to his plight and making it feel like he is comfortable in his girl form, rather then burdened by it. I feel like the majority of these changes comes from that the series is being made in connection with Netflix and aimed at audiences outside of Japan(unlike the original), that favor messaging and strong feminist characters over male ones, as has been the trend in western film making and animation for several years. I think among anime audiences, the original will remain more popular, with the exception of those who are too young or haven't seen the 1989 anime and are simply too used to modern animation styles, and will feel the original is too dated.
I watched the 90's anime, all the OVA's, movies, and then read the manga.... Love the remake. The things you dislike were the original scenes from the manga, like Ranma going to apologize to Akane only to cut it to the stairs. And it's true, the OG added new scenes to I guess flesh out things a bit more, which works well sometimes.... But wasn't faithful to the manga at all. Which is where you would get inconsistencies like Shampoo showing up before Mikado and Azusa (which resulted in Akane having a flashback of a fight that hadn't happened yet), new characters like Sasuke in place of Gosunkugi (which didn't work like in the Romeo and Juliet arc), filler eps, and the worst thing: mischaracterization. You said the OG felt more like they were falling in love, but I disagree. To me it feels jarring as hell to see them acting like that, and then fighting over the stupidest things. Akane was done so dirty in the OG anime, especially later seasons, that it's not even funny. I was genuinely surprised at how sweet she was throughout the manga, and how she does a way better job of showing she likes Ranma than beating him up because she's jealous. And this is true for other characters like Shampoo, who says and does some hilariously unhinged stuff in the manga and who was nerfed as hell. It may seem the pacing of the OG is better for now, but that gets thrown off the window real quick bc of the fillers imo. Don't get me wrong, I love the OG and that will never change. There were scenes from the remake that I do think the OG did better, but I think long-term the remake is gonna really shine in comparison to the dumb fillers of the OG.
the remake is what i remember reading in the manga
Can you do one on wonder egg prioritys ending cuz I didn't make sense
Didn't watch wonder egg priority and I don't really want to in the near future. I only make videos on subjects that personally interest me.
@etheri0n959 that's fair
The new adaptation sticks much closer to the manga, but at the same time, it toned downmuch of the humour, like Kenshin's funny expressions. Though they managed to make him more goofy again in the second season
