The great thing about the og show, in my opinion, is that it expanded on Takahashi's manga and then managed to detach itself from it a bit. Some of the best episodes are anime original ones which took some risks, like the one where all main characters were on an island and killed off one after another, or the episode focusing on Ataru's mother which built on the concept of a dream within a dream years before it became mainstream in the west.
Sadly that's why I'm not overly impressed with the remake. It's based on the manga and the anime did nearly every episode better. Even Lum is better, in the manga she's a cute alien. In the OG anime she's a super star, everyone stops and drools and she notices, clearly notices, but pretends not to.
Those two very famous episodes have one thing in common: Mamoru Oshii. He was able to deviate from Takahashi's work and inject his vision into it... which Takahashi didn't like very much. You can see the same influence in his work in Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor. When Oshii left the second half of the series came closer to Takahashi's vision but didn't have the wild flights of fancy any more. The pinnacle of UY are the first two movies: UY is closer to Takahashi's vision but in grand scale, and Beautiful Dreamer is purely an Oshii roller coaster ride.
@@stuntmonkey00 I knew about all of that, I'm a UY fan since the late eighties (and I have GitS & Patlabor on Laserdisc), but it's good for others to know the reason for why some of the TV episodes of the original show are so good (and Beautiful Dreamer is a masterpiece in my opinion).
What's interesting in the new character design is that they are trying to take a stab at Takahashi's original intent for Lum's hair. In the original manga, Takahashi had wanted Lum to have iridescent hair, but the animators for the '81-'86 series said there was zero way they would be able to achieve that, so the compromise was made to give her green hair.
@@Jumpoable I've only seen the clips of the new series shown here (as opposed to roughly 100% of the original) - the incandesent hair is nice, but WTF with the overall Pastel color of everything including the thumbnails of the show? Seriously... I think the hair thing is cool, but why does the artsy-fartsy stuff have to spread to rest of the world? If I find and watch the new version, I mostly hope I can tolerate that pastel look by learning to ignore it.
"Challenge Ataru to a game of tag for some reason" The reason is that the name of the game of tag in Japanese is "Onigokku" which literally means "Game of the Oni", so of COURSE the Oni would use it as their national sport and the invasion challenge.
@@etheri0n959 I was just pointing out that it's literally the punchline to one of the jokes, as the series is chock full of Puns (For example, "Sakuranbo" being written in kanji that mean "The Deranged Priest" but he insists on being called "Cherry" in English, because That's the more common meaning of the word, and the fact that "Ataru" means "you're going to get hit".)
its actually done more often then then you think in Anime in fact in Dragon Ball Z the original Dub not the KAI remake when Goku Falls off of Snake way and ends up in HFIL/Hell in order for Goku to escape their and go back to Snake Way/King Kai's Planet Goz and Mezu end up challenging Goku himself to a Game of Oni/Tag in that 1 DBZ Episode and Goz and Mez in DBZ are Demon's ones that after Goku beats them at Tag in that 1 Episode their never really shown again in any Dragon Ball Z episode.
Urusei Yatsura getting a modern adaptation gives me hope that Ranma 1/2 will eventually get one too, preferably one that adapts the manga chapters that the original anime and its OVAs haven't already covered
Ranma's manga ran on for a few more years than the series, and even included a Final Chapter finale storyline, that UY got in the movies but Ranma never did on TV. (Granted, given Rumiko's self-cribbing, it was almost the exact SAME ending story, but..)
@@ericjanssen394 Cant blame her that much though, I think thats just the norm in ending romcom stories back in the days and if they ever did redo ranma 1/2 it would have put fans in a lot more closure if they did an original ending.
As a pole-vaulter, I can add to the humor of the original that Ataru when vaulting, defies the laws of physics by swinging in the opposite direction that he should be. In fact, aside from his take off, everything else was pretty much the OPPOSITE of what you're supposed to do. That joke killed me because I knew most people wouldn't really catch that unless they knew how to polevault.
@@etheri0n959 It will never stop amazing me how much thought was put into jokes that, at first glance, seem like they had no thought put into whatsoever as they all are really sudden and seemingly come from out of nowhere. Seriously, the original had layers of layers of humour and that's just lovely.
These were my thoughts about the execution of the comedy as well. The original anime knew how to do random, out-of-nowhere physical gags. It’s supposed to be this “anything is possible” kind of charm. The inclusion of many more characters will improve the repetitive, sitcom nature of the pilot. But it’s that repetitive nature in a different, unpredictable setting that made the original like comfort food: no plot or character development needed, you just want to see what they do best in every new bonkers situation. The new remake is doing fine so far, but you’re right, it’s also trying to add naturalism to some scenes instead of parody, and it doesn’t work as well. But there’s still lots of episodes to see, and it looks like a lot of thought and care went into it.
@@michaelyakiwchuk43 Yeah I enjoy the way they changed the episode, it was very similar up to a point and then it just goes waay into its own wild path then it manages to resolve in a familiar way (Ataru dropping the bell on Mendou so Kurama knows he's VERY afraid of the dark and claustrophobia underneath his confident, handsome ladykiller exterior) They've definitely nailed the humor of the OG for the most part while also reinventing it. Im wondering when exactly they will introduce Ten. They introduced Mendou BEFORE Ten which I'm not against, I just think it's an interesting way to keep fans on their toes while also reinventing the direction of the OG episodes. I'm looking forward to it and Im so glad this anime is getting a reboot at all!
fun fact: The first 2 seasons and 2 movies of Urusei Yatsura were directed by Mamoru Oshii and Kazunori Ito, who went on to direct/write Ghost In The Shell, Jin-Roh and Patlabor
Mamoru Oshii is also the TV series chief Director. He also changed a lot of the series different from the original Manga that Rumiko Takahashi says the TV series is Oshii’s Urusei Yatsura not Rumiko Takahashi’s UY. Oshii even added Anime only characters like Megane and the Lum Stormtroopers, also the teacher Onsen Mark is also Anime only character.
I'm going to give the new one some props. Because unlike a lot of remakes/reboots, it is actually good. Just don't get enough of these things that actually are made by people that care. It's just going to come down to pace and what works better for people. A slower 100+ episode burn or a faster 50-ish episode run. Well I suppose modern versus classic animation will also play into it, but I'd say the pacing will be the big thing. So far, so good for the new show. It's been a good deal of fun.
The original Urusei Yatsura had the talents of animators and comical genius' of Dirty Pair, Project Ako, and even Inzer One. Its very hard to capture that lightening in a bottle again as these creators made huge contributions during and after the 80s! That said, Your video is awesome! You have a great appreciation for the original and point out how the reboot differs in its comedic timing, yet unique enough to a visual splendor! I appreciate that. I'm glad Lum is getting newer exposure, so here's hoping the new fans give the original a shot!
It seems to me the new series is trying to be more compact than the original series. For example, while the first story is the same for each, the 2nd story of the new series "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" is identical to the first story of episode 6 of the original series, "Black Hole Love Triangle". So rather than updating all the stories, they're just updating the "best" ones (best being subjective, of course).
For better or for worse, that seems to be the trend with remakes. They compact wherever and as much as and they can. The furuba remake was going great until they decided to condense the climax of the story :(
They mimicked the old style so well that my mom picked up anime again. She watched sailor moon and the original series when they first aired so you can guess her excitement.
I love both of them! My husband collected Urusei Yatsura in the 1990s he owns all the animeigo vhs then dvd the viz mangas and we were so happy to hear lums song in instrumental with the new series! I said it before but i hope we get some of the classic episodes done in the new series!
I gotta say, as good as the old show is, The new version did a pretty good job of cleaning the art style up. Lum's colors pop so brilliantly in there! Especially with the bright oil slick shine to her green hair. If anything, I may watch the new version just for that aspect. I find it so interesting comparing an artist's current style from how it was back in the day.
Part of the reason the narratives, cinematography, visual direction, and even humorous beats were brighter and fresher in the original is that Showa era animators and directors were, more often than not, fans of Western and international films and TV whose only realistic creative outlet for their fandom was the budding animation industry. Many of them hail from the post-WWII generation of children who voraciously consumed the wave of American and imported foreign entertainment that flowed into the country in the cultural vacuum following Japan's defeat. The pool of inspiration they drew from in creating their works had much, much wider breadth and depth, informing everything from the way scenes were set up, to the kinds of gags that could be used, even to the directorial styles as they would play out, etc. If you go back to read interviews from this generation many will cite inspiration from works ranging from "Wanted: Dead or Alive" to "Star Trek" to "Dungeons & Dragons" to Russia's "The Snow Queen" to classic Errol Flynn swashbucklers like "Robin Hood" and even "Roman Holiday" starring Audrey Hepburn. With the "Bubblegum Jidai" of optimism and prosperity there was also a glut of money to indulge auteur's fancies, so more risk taking and creative development could take place. The current generation of animators in Japan, however, are by and large otaku, e.g. they're narrowly interested in Japanese anime & geek pop culture, and consequently don't have the same scope of influences bearing on their work. What's more in these "Lost Decades" of recession since the bubblegum economy popped, teams are often working with smaller budgets in a very matured industry that produces everything by committee, so they often fall back on safe approaches instead of trailblazing whatever capricious whimsies come to mind. Such constraints and dilution of the creative process lead to tamer works that are what some call a "self-cannibalization" of Japan's animation culture.
Which explains the recent controversy regarding Chainsaw Man's director trying to detach himself from anime culture in favour of western influences and how it's welcomed in the west but not as much in Japan. Not a Japanese person myself so I can't say which is a better approach, but as long as great content gets released I'm not complaining.
As a newcomer to the series, starting with the new anime adaptation- I gotta say I simply just enjoy the anime, it almost just feels like/gives me the vibe of one of those childhood shows that you could just binge.
Just leaving a comment to help out the algorithm in letting more people see your videos. you have a very relaxing style, something that I enjoy watching
I actually prefer the slower set-ups in the OG, the slow-burn character development and taking their time with the dramatic plot (Lum getting used to life on Earth, Ataru gradually warming up to Lum, Shinobu getting more and more fed up and starting to pursue Mendou when he gets introduced, etc etc) balance out the breakneck and absolutely batshit shenanigans that go down in nearly every episode. It's like Mamoru Oshii sat down with his team and said "... but how can we make this shit EVEN CRAZIER?" and I'm all for it. Best anime, 10/10. Remake isn't BAD per se, it just.... it's a very pretty remake with great visuals and audio. The writing just isn't on the level of the original show, and thats' a pity...
The new show is subtle, in the style of the later episodes, with cool Ataru and cute Lum, where the old show's S1 tried to be Manga-Wacky: New Episode 1 won this OG vet over when Cherry, after telling Ataru his face is a bad omen, ends up a walking bandage-mummy instead of being beaten ugly--The timing of the gag could have been straight out of an early Sgt. Frog episode. 😂 (And for years, the subbed Sgt. Frog was one of the few shows that deserved to be compared with OG Urusei.)
Fun Fact: Th original show was directed by Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor. The guy knows how to be hilarious if he really wants to
So just an FYI regarding the art style, the original manga ran for about 9 years from the late 70s to late 80s and the character designs varied and changed over that time and right up until now from commercial and anniversary appearances. The Lum from the original series first episode follows her original design, while the 2022 is the later manga/anime/movie appearance. Same thing can be also seen in other anime over the years, where anime evolved the character designs over time like the mangas they adapt (check out Kenshin's design over the anime/manga). I actually read the original Urusei Yatsura manga, along with a bunch of her other works (late nineties scanlations times). It's a prime example of a manga that was never written with an overarching story and changed over time do to fan reaction, where in the beginning it was about Otaru and Shinobu's relationship being interfered with and schemes by an obnoxious foreigner (*cough* classic Japanese xenophobia) and then changing to focus on Otaru and Lum's relationship, because people loved her character and even sympathized with her (Shinobu getting her own love interest). Rumiko Takahashi really has a talent for making incredibly unlikeable characters likeable and I can see where the idea that this was Japan's Simpsons came from.
as a fan of both the og anime and manga i will say that as the series goes on the comedy comes less from the core love triangle and more from the supporting cast. think of the series less like archie and more like the simpsons where there is a massive supporting cast of zany characters each with their own quirks. The main love triangle of ataru x lum x shinobu gets dropped pretty early on in favor of more lum-> ataru-> every girl every guy-> lum. they have also really toned down ataru in the new anime. in the original manga/anime ataru is a total scumbag he harasses women on the daily and he is a character that it’s really hard to feel any sort of sympathy for. In the new anime lum comes off as much more of a yandere and ataru just her hapless victim. It hurts the comedy a bit imo but its still early in the anime’s run so we’ll see where things go. in the early parts of the manga lum is pretty crazy but that gets toned down a lot over time, so im interested to see how the anime adapts later manga material when the characters are much more settled in their dynamics and personality. the new anime has also toned down the craziness a lot. 90% of urusei yatsura stories start with pretty mundane problems that get turned into utter chaos because lum’s “solution” to most problems is to pull out some crazy alien tech that she does not know how to actually use properly that ends up making the problem worse, or because one of the side characters comes in to make a simple problem worse because of their character goals and quirks. so far the new anime has felt more safe and straightforward. they dont seem to have any plans to adapt some of the crazier chapters, and imo that kind of makes the series feel just a bit more generic. Still though i am just really pleased to get to see these characters again and the animation is gorgeous. i am really excited to see where the new anime goes
@@etheri0n959 haha yeah me too there are actually a lot of manga chapters that never got adapted in the og anime so my biggest hope is that the new anime focuses on those
It was always gonna be a struggle and a challenge to bring Ataru’s character in front of a modern audience. Funny enough, it’s gonna make Jariten’s lack of consequences even worse. We’re gonna have another generation that hates that little oni toddler
The original UY was the Simpsons before the SImpsons golden age existed. It was sly, intelligent and was ABSOLUTELY LOADED with historical and pop culture references, let alone biting critiques of daily Japanese life. It was exactly like the Simpsons, I supposedly kids show but one that adults would get something out of as well.
Urusei was on my sorta like "I know about it, and in some universe I'll probably watch it, but, idk if I can commit to it" list, the reboot kinda made me wanna watch both, and, I have to say that I kinda got stuck into the OG a bit. Not gotten too far as I'm a hard watcher, but, one thing I feel that flows in both of the series is that: You can tell the people behind the artwork care. Part of the charm when watching the OG was the huge labour of love feeling that eminated from it, which I feel was captured fairly well in the new version. I'm partially conflicted around Ataru, when I first made my mental note of comparisons between the two, I was partially glad that in the reboot they seem to have made Ataru less, well, Ataru. At first when watching the original he kinda grated on me a little bit, but, as that died down in terms of intensity and unfamiliarity, I guess, I feel as if the change kinda takes away from a huge source of 'misfortune' which often ends up in a good gag or two. Them stripping stuff out is maybe good flow wise, especially as some of the first few episodes have some halfs which seemed slow to me, kinda sad that we missed some stuff, but, otherwise, I can't entirely fault them. Defo interesting to keep watching this, as much as I'm still tilting my love towards the OG.
If i am right the original 90's anime was animated by Studio Pierrot the studio behind Bleach. And the remake was by David Production. I didn't know Pierrot has been around the industry for that long.
Honestly, the OG Urusei Yatsura had Simpson levels of visual humor which made it great. Another great moment is when Ataru is disguised to get away from his family, and the television he's watching shows he's missing with his current disguise to out him out. In the remake they tone it down and the pacing of the joke is off. The new version is fine, but watered down a bit.
What i think is great about lum's new design is that it really reflects (haha) rumiko Takahashi's original inspiration for lum's hair being the back of a CD. I love that we have the technology to properly portray that now
My biggest gripe with Ranma is that Ranma is put into situations against his will and then villainized by those around him for being put into those situations, 90% of which he could probably talk himself out of if he wasn't such a hothead. Not to mention NONE of the bully characters, Kuno siblings, Mousse, nor Happosai EVER get ANY kind of commupance. Half-way through the series Ranma and his family actually have a chance to get rid of Happosai, who has been constantly causing legal issues for the family, getting the cops called on them constantly, and AKANE of all people makes sure that Happosai gets absolutely no damage done to him, whilst simultaneously calling Ranma a letch for accidents beyond his control. I'm gonna be honest, I never read the manga and only watched the series fully once, but I hope that in whatever final ending Ranma gets, he bails on his father, Akane and the Tendo dojo and goes with Ukyo, the only female character that actually likes and respects Ranma as a person. Like ok sure Ranma would still have to deal with Mousse and Shampoo, unless he finds a way to get them off his back, but Ryoga would probably calm down a lot of Ranma just up and left Akane, not to mention getting the Kuno siblings off his back as well as dumping his scummy father as well as never having to deal with Happosai ever again. Like I said I hate how Ranma is forced into these BS situations and then villainized because someone forced him into them. I wish it was more like "Oh this was just a huge misunderstanding, allow me to explain what really happened." but that's not how it goes, and the main cast outside of Ranma, Ryoga, Ukyo, and Shampoo are the epitome of "Fucking braindead." Sorry this is just something that has bugged me for years and I needed to vent.
@@hafidb4934 Shampoo is equally as boring, also I'd say Ranma appreciates Ukyo's cooking enough that it'd make him want to learn himself. Also remember that Ukyo is Ranma's childhood friend and that they have the healthiest relationship out of ANYONE in the show.
@@megaman37456 Shampoo boring? Lol she's literally what makes the show with her twisted and crazy plans so yeah she's not boring. Ukyo barely has any screentime and Shampoo is the more popular girl on the show so it's settled in my Book.
I'm actually reading the whole manga of Urusei Yatsura And honestly while Ataru at the beginning is "faithful" to Shinobu I don't think it's a couple that can actually work, there are cases where she shows immense superficiality when it comes to love relationships, even with the person who would bring her the worst Wedding ever (Sakura Boyfriend) she is on board with that because he is cute She isn't that better than Ataru, and I'm happy that after Shutaro introduction they actually move on and don't date anymore, the gag is still there sometime but really rarely, which is some nice character development and change in Character Dynamic And while Ataru will have numerous relationships in the series (and his "commitment" to Shinobu in the beginning isn't the only time he does crazy stuff numerous times for other girls as well, so saying that it's wrong to judge him for some separated degenerate moments isn't a valid argument because he will do the same exact thing to a lot of others female characters while being a degenerate, so his "faithfulness" doesn't actually mean much, at first I had some doubts about Lum's actions too, as she got involved in a romantic affair of 2 childhood friends pretty close to each other (despite the huge dysfunctionality of the relationship) and she ended up getting married to him for a misunderstood explained, but from there on with literally every random girl and with Lum who proves herself more and more a perfect wife it's just fair for him to be punished by her) none are ever genuine or lasting, as pointed out in the story itself Lum is the only one who truly care about him, and he has to understand that She is the answer to his problems but he doesn't want to admit it And as the series progresses both Lum and Ataru get closer to each other and become less mean towards the other, I don't even remember how many volumes ago Lum used her electric shocks as a sign of affection after understanding that humans don't handle electric shocks well and nearly killed Ataru (other Character Development) She start as annoying for him in some ways, but after a while she became the best thing in his life, it's just that Ataru is an idiot who don't can't or won't understand it and then things go wrong because of that By the way, I'm at chapter 164, and while at the beginning I didn't liked at all the humor of the series, the more I read of it the more I actually enjoy it, I hope it's the same for You because I'm having really a lot of fun
As someone who just went through the entire run of the og anime a few months ago, I can say that the show is very much a sitcom. So the status quo never changes much, other than the addition of a few new characters. What makes the series so good is the surreal scenarios the characters end up in. There's an episode where they accidentally eat drug-like mushrooms in class and the whole class ends up having a weird talent contest thing. There are a ton of episodes that are just that weird and they all have this lighthearted comedy to them that makes it a very easy watch. As far as the new anime goes. After watching the first 4 episodes so far, it is very good. Funny, good looking and great sounding. While still following the story of the original, they change things enough that you can't just predict the next episode. That being said, I think the original anime is better. Even though the first 50 or so episodes are basically 2 stories within each episode, the pacing felt better. The new show feels more rushed. But the new show just started so the kinks can be worked out and it may end up being better than the 80s version (probably not, but it is possible) All that being said, I haven't read the manga yet so I don't know which animated version is closer to Rumiko Takahashi's original vision.
Takahashi Sensei wanted Lum to have iridescent hair, but the studio obviously couldn't do it back then, so they went with green. Lum's scintillating hair in the 2022 version makes her appear more otherworldly & alien, & that shimmering sheen perhaps ties in with her bioelectric powers.
The author realized her mistake early on then spent the rest of UY attempting to cover it up. This deprives Ataru of his heroic nature as he seems to understand the mistake and tries everything he can to not profit from his accidental villainy. The new anime does its best to cover up the crime that happens in front our eyes, but both Ataru and Lum know that if he somehow is able to take back the wish he imposed on her then she would revert back to her original personality and kill her so-called Darling. It's a risk he accepts, but that she won't.
@@chadchinaman7544 Takahashi didn't consider the implications of Lum being forced to love Araru through mind control. She thought it was just a one-off gag.
I like the new take on the show it has a much more faster pace then the long ass storyline of the original. I can see this remake only going for 50-100 episodes but anything at this point is a blessing
The "doomed to fall into a state of monotomy" by the Streamer is B.S. He admits he hasn't seen much of the show, so he shouldn't be making such lame ass assumption. As is, I'd concede that the original 192 episodes + is a long time to watch, but it is nothing but original in the extent to which it constantly keeps choosing new plots. This is Sci-fi, and Sci-fi is all too often about saving the lives of the main characters or the entire world. Although UY is every-so-often about saving the world, especially in the first few episodes, the main plots tend to move toward chasing women, food, how Atari is really an idiot, how it really does love LUM, and all the weird characters he keeps encountering, which BTW, are probably based on the way the Japanese see many foreigners... I'm guessing with many of the girls being symbolic of different characters. Atiru himself is based on a foreigner in that he's loud and emotional and won't speak in a serious pitch-limited fashion that way he does/should in the few episodes where he if briefly transformed into what is clearly indicated to be an attractive man, as he suddenly starts speaking with seriously and with Japanese-typical limited tonal qualities I'm kind of rambling here, but the point is, the original has so much diversity, near I nor you should expect me to do it justice by listing things here and now.
the OG show is one of the first animes i watched as a kid. but trying to watch it now its just annoying how nothing ever progresses and nothing really happens and i get bored really fast.
Its cool that the new Urusei Yatsura follows the manga more, but i like the 1981 anime more. It has better acting. I also like the characters Megane & the rest of Lums Stormtroopers. ❤
But, i want ranma 1/2 back. It at least has the fighting and those were pretty intesting at times. That and Ranma would roast the shit out of akane and that was pretty funny.
I never watched the original but I love the attention that this anime is getting (judging by the 100k+ views) because I thought this anime would be so underrated and no one watching it because the formula is too old or something, and because how many great animes airing this season too. As for me, I originally have no idea that this is a reboot anime, I just happened to love David's Production anime like JoJo and Fire Force so that's why I'm here and I don't regret it.
Good analysis but the black hole thing happens in the original too, only it takes until episode 5 or 6 for it to happen. You see, they skip a TON, and that’s what happened to manga publications with a ton of small independent chapters. Urusei Yatsura’s original 1981 adaptation seems to be an exception to that rule with its whopping 195 episodes and its 2 segment in 1 ep format in the first quarter. Manga is comprised of 34 volumes so that meant a large part was adapted but i doubt all of it. For example other anime from the era skipped large parts of their story or shuffled them around to make sense like 1987’s Kimagure Orange Road and its 48 eps 8 ova and 1 movie but 18 manga volumes that i watched and read simultaneously but the anime jumped a lot of chapters
the 80s anime didnt adapt properly either certain characters were introduced earlier then they actually were in the chapters mostly being Jariten (hate him btw)
The remake has also cut out a lot of content, but since it's an episodic comedy that doesn't matter so much. The original anime kept more from the manga. However, don't stay attached to the Shinobu Ataru relationship as that eventually just goes away in favor of Ataru and Lum. Which wasn't the idea at first but the fans loved Lum so much that Rumiko made the change.
@@amandaslough125 This one originally. That was supposed to be the intention before the fans caused her to switch it up. And I supposed Bleach, but I'm an IchiRuki shipper at heart.
The fact that they didn't hard censor the original jokes that could be considered "problematic" by the Twitter sphere (before Elon buy it) make this new adaptation great.
I like how they almost didn't change the original artstyle and classic visual gags. Also I like how this new generation is gonna fall in love with one of THE original waifus
The only issue I have with the new Urusei Yatsura is that it feels slightly rushed with the shows story progressing quite a bit faster than the original
I really hate the new design. Yellow eyes that don't pop against her skin and barely noticeable eyeshadow. Her original eyeshadow and eyes popped and grabbed your attention.
There’s a lot of things I love about the new one but idk what it is I just like the older anime better I’m actually rewatching the old one because of the new series released and I do like the new one but idk it’s a weird mix feeling there’s a charm the old one has that isn’t there in the new one but in the end I still love this anime
now that we're 5 episodes in, I think I actually prefer this modern adaptation. We're still getting a large chunk of the characters introduced to us, but I feel like the dynamics between them all are much more balanced, even if it doesn't have that classic feel. Moroboshi, to put it simply, isn't so much of pig anymore and Lum is no longer the saint, but a cute and clingy girl which really feels a lot more natural.
Ataru was chosen for the game of tag because he’s the unluckiest human on the face of the Earth. No joke. Dude was born on Friday the 13th, which is also when Butsumetsu happen to fall, _and_ in the middle of an earthquake. He was basically cursed from birth and it’s hilarious.
2 things 1: I hope they remake the episode “Full of Sunshine - Full of Amours” in this 2022 version and 2: if they’re gonna English dub this anime in the Future then they should also English dub the 1981 version and no not the British dub version I mean English whether from Viz Media or Crunchyroll (Funimation)
Sadly this remake cannot capture the magic of the OG anime because its faithfully following the manga. The anime improved upon the manga due to synergy with the voice actors and writers involved. Megane for example is a crazed ball of hilarity in the OG anime, but in the manga he's little more then a background character.
As far as im aware, each of the Characters experiences subtle and gradual character development. Tiny steps of course, as can be expected from this type of story...but one might wonder how this modern take will approach it. Theres a good video i'd recommend but i feel like doing so right now would be a disservice to the experience. Or idk, thats just my opinion. You got all the right tools to make your own assessment. Especially with this new take on it.
I DEFINITELY agree that the new one lacks the absolute chaos that the original 80s anime had (random explosions, jokes that come at you out of nowhere, visual gags) which was what made Urusei Yatsura so great. Correct me if im wrong about this but im assuming all of those were Mamoru Oshii's own flair for the original anime, and since this reboot is closely following the manga more, the lack of chaos is understandable. I was also pretty surprised at how tame Ataru is in this new reboot since he was absolute trash in the original, which i personally think added to the humor since it justifies that he 100% deserves every bad thing that happens to him in the episodes 🤣 but then again we are only 5 episodes in, and im looking forward to seeing some of my favorite episodes be adapted!!
@@etheri0n959 oooh so the time period is the same as the original? Kinda got confused with the opening. I thought they were going to modernize things like sometimes happens with remakes
The some reason about why a game of tag... In japanese the game of tag is called Onigoko (the game of the oni, which is a japanese monster in between a demon and an ogre) which the alien species are... Oni... so IT IS their game...
I'm not a big fan of lum's dance in the new one. It looks like those silly modern pop love idol dances. The old one had a discotheque charm to it that can't be replicated.
Going with the whole "Video game" theme of the OP, I thought Lum's pop-idol scene in the OP was supposed to be her Hatsune Miku moment. (Admit it, we still confuse the two sometimes, and the producers may be guilty as well. ☺)
@@ericjanssen394 It's kind of like this: the new OP begins with animated versions of some of the original manga panels and pixel artwork from old UY console games, then shifts into a sequence with the UY characters in a present-day setting complete with 2022-era technology such as smartphones (the "idol concert" scene is within this part), then at the very end it shifts back to a scene in the usual early-'80s setting in which is Ataru waking up in the morning (implying that the preceding scenes were a dream sequence).
Its a serial you really shouldn't be watching a large number of episodes at a time. It was made to be enjoyed by an audience who's exposer was spread over a long period of time. Serials just aren't made to be binged
You know, I didn't get into Uruse Yatsura until the remake came out and after watching what's out for the remake at the time of me writing this comment, I decided to check out the original anime and I really enjoy it. Usually I'm not a big fan of animes that're pure comedy or at least the kind of comedy that's present in Urusei Yatsura but I've been used to Rumiko Takahashi's brand of comedy she puts into her animes and mangas so Urusei isn't all that different except it's more comedy based than nearly all her other properties.
It's not really fair to call the relationship a love triangle so much as Lum just being a psycho. Shinobu and Ataru are already together. Anyways it will be interesting to see who they get for the English Dub if that ever comes.
I never watched the anime in the first place. Just got some clips on yt and it is the wildest shit I've ever seen. I am really not into anime manga so I'm kinda blown away whatever the hell is going on here
I don't really care for the MC's personality, but I do love Lum! I watched one of the old movies and just loved her character. I would willingly watch this show just for her!
OG had better comedic timing, better pacing (characters were given longer and proper introduction thus jokes just hit better) not to mention that voice acting was superb. In new one almost every single character with expressive temperament (maybe except Lum and Ataru) were butchered and made sound generic. Ram is probably the biggest downgrade: in OG her V/A would goes from calm, quiet, sweet and tender to serious, loud, furious and scary back and forth. Sometimes it's leading to situations were she spits crazy threats with her girly, cute voice or tries to keep peace while her voice is almost going off. In remake it's all gone - she sounds like a normal, typical girl and when she goes mad she just sounds like a mad teenager. In og? Sweet idiot transforming into maniacal psycho xD
This may be a nitpick, but in the old, the music isn't as serious during some moments in the first episode, but in the new one it is stupidly serious. I hate it. It kills me because I know it isn't a serious show.
Urusei Yatsura is a story that does develope over time but then again it's a romantic comedy tv show. People may not like this, but most anime are CARTOONS first. Which means that there always has to be a return point for the characters for it to be a syndicated run. Of course you're smart enough to realize that so don't think like I'm talking down to you personally.
Except Urusei Yatsura came out 10 years before, so actually, it's Ranma that got the inspiration and definitely not the way aroud. Shampoo is a clear expy of Lum, to name one.
That sounds really cool. I love it when adaptations do stuff like that. Following the manga is safe, but it take balls to do your own thing.
The great thing on the new version is..... There is no Ten(yet?)
Yeah her scintillating hair makes Lum appear more otherworldly & alien, & that shimmering sheen perhaps ties in with her bioelectric powers.
Her new hair is so pretty !
But really does not translate well into figurines 😰 a few of em got it ok looking but not quite right
"Challenge Ataru to a game of tag for some reason"
The reason is that the name of the game of tag in Japanese is "Onigokku" which literally means "Game of the Oni", so of COURSE the Oni would use it as their national sport and the invasion challenge.
I didn't mean that as a flaw with the show. If anything, I liked the fact that it didn't make sense because it was supposed to be funny
Then we find it funny for different reasons than on its original nuance in its original language.
I didn't know that haha. Thx for sharing!
Lum's design, hair coloring and animation are the main reasons I watch the show. She's too good damn it. XD
They really outdid themselves with comp in this new adaptation.
I assume you mean "why you're watching the new version", but I wish you'd be more specific. BTW, where are streaming/watching the new show from?
the op is also great! i really like this new adaptation
The voice acting too
Urusei Yatsura getting a modern adaptation gives me hope that Ranma 1/2 will eventually get one too, preferably one that adapts the manga chapters that the original anime and its OVAs haven't already covered
Ranma's manga ran on for a few more years than the series, and even included a Final Chapter finale storyline, that UY got in the movies but Ranma never did on TV.
(Granted, given Rumiko's self-cribbing, it was almost the exact SAME ending story, but..)
Ranma 1/2 is a big risk so I think they'll stick to OVA's for it.
We need an anniversary movie covering the Saffron arc AND the final one being fixed. The og anime never ended.
@@ericjanssen394 Cant blame her that much though, I think thats just the norm in ending romcom stories back in the days and if they ever did redo ranma 1/2 it would have put fans in a lot more closure if they did an original ending.
Gives me hope for a revival of the Kinnikuman anime
As a pole-vaulter, I can add to the humor of the original that Ataru when vaulting, defies the laws of physics by swinging in the opposite direction that he should be. In fact, aside from his take off, everything else was pretty much the OPPOSITE of what you're supposed to do. That joke killed me because I knew most people wouldn't really catch that unless they knew how to polevault.
That's really cool. Thanks for telling me that. Makes my appreciation for that joke even greater
Yeah. I'm excited to see where it goes. Can't wait to see all of the whacky scenarios from the manga
@@etheri0n959 Ok, just finished the latest episode with Mendo. I think the remake is in its groove now. Much much better. 😂
@@yeetuspogimus2023 KuramaHime looks SO HOT in the new anime.
fun fact: The first 2 seasons and 2 movies of Urusei Yatsura were directed by Mamoru Oshii and Kazunori Ito, who went on to direct/write Ghost In The Shell, Jin-Roh and Patlabor
Jin-roh the wolf brigade?
The furuba remake was going great until they decided to condense the climax of the story :(
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some of the early episodes were definitely not as good as the later ones.
They mimicked the old style so well that my mom picked up anime again. She watched sailor moon and the original series when they first aired so you can guess her excitement.

@@zacharyalvarez5564 Urusei Yatsura. They both have the same name. The original is just way funnier and Lum is sexier.
Yeah her scintillating hair makes Lum appear more otherworldly & alien, & that shimmering sheen perhaps ties in with her bioelectric powers.
Benkyou ni narimashita.
(And for years, the subbed Sgt. Frog was one of the few shows that deserved to be compared with OG Urusei.)
ngl the new version makes her more like an alien with the hair especially. i think the exact opposite with that point Lol
I wouldn't know about the loss in charm in the new anime since I didn't read the manga, but hopefully it lives up to people's expectations.

It's one of the oldest studios. Also the original anime aired in the early 80s, not 90s.
I wish it was more like "Oh this was just a huge misunderstanding, allow me to explain what really happened." but that's not how it goes, and the main cast outside of Ranma, Ryoga, Ukyo, and Shampoo are the epitome of "Fucking braindead."
Sorry this is just something that has bugged me for years and I needed to vent.
Ranma should go with Shampoo. She's the best choice not Ukyo. Ukyo IS boring and she doesn't share the same interests as Ranma.
@@hafidb4934 Shampoo is equally as boring, also I'd say Ranma appreciates Ukyo's cooking enough that it'd make him want to learn himself.

@@megaman37456 Shampoo boring? Lol she's literally what makes the show with her twisted and crazy plans so yeah she's not boring. Ukyo barely has any screentime and Shampoo is the more popular girl on the show so it's settled in my Book.
i haven't watch the anime yet but i love the like 80"s style animation
I'm actually reading the whole manga of Urusei Yatsura
And honestly while Ataru at the beginning is "faithful" to Shinobu I don't think it's a couple that can actually work, there are cases where she shows immense superficiality when it comes to love relationships, even with the person who would bring her the worst Wedding ever (Sakura Boyfriend) she is on board with that because he is cute
She isn't that better than Ataru, and I'm happy that after Shutaro introduction they actually move on and don't date anymore, the gag is still there sometime but really rarely, which is some nice character development and change in Character Dynamic
And while Ataru will have numerous relationships in the series (and his "commitment" to Shinobu in the beginning isn't the only time he does crazy stuff numerous times for other girls as well, so saying that it's wrong to judge him for some separated degenerate moments isn't a valid argument because he will do the same exact thing to a lot of others female characters while being a degenerate, so his "faithfulness" doesn't actually mean much, at first I had some doubts about Lum's actions too, as she got involved in a romantic affair of 2 childhood friends pretty close to each other (despite the huge dysfunctionality of the relationship) and she ended up getting married to him for a misunderstood explained, but from there on with literally every random girl and with Lum who proves herself more and more a perfect wife it's just fair for him to be punished by her) none are ever genuine or lasting, as pointed out in the story itself Lum is the only one who truly care about him, and he has to understand that
She is the answer to his problems but he doesn't want to admit it
And as the series progresses both Lum and Ataru get closer to each other and become less mean towards the other, I don't even remember how many volumes ago Lum used her electric shocks as a sign of affection after understanding that humans don't handle electric shocks well and nearly killed Ataru (other Character Development)
She start as annoying for him in some ways, but after a while she became the best thing in his life, it's just that Ataru is an idiot who don't can't or won't understand it and then things go wrong because of that
By the way, I'm at chapter 164, and while at the beginning I didn't liked at all the humor of the series, the more I read of it the more I actually enjoy it, I hope it's the same for You because I'm having really a lot of fun
But the new show just started so the kinks can be worked out and it may end up being better than the 80s version (probably not, but it is possible)
All that being said, I haven't read the manga yet so I don't know which animated version is closer to Rumiko Takahashi's original vision.
Where did you watch it from? Cause am having a hard time finding where I can watch it
Takahashi Sensei wanted Lum to have iridescent hair, but the studio obviously couldn't do it back then, so they went with green. Lum's scintillating hair in the 2022 version makes her appear more otherworldly & alien, & that shimmering sheen perhaps ties in with her bioelectric powers.
I think the old has it's ups and downs, and I sure can't wait to see how Yatsura's modern adaptation goes!
I will give the new anime credit in that it managed to adapt Lum's iridescent hair.
What mistake?
@@chadchinaman7544 Takahashi didn't consider the implications of Lum being forced to love Araru through mind control. She thought it was just a one-off gag.
@@henrycobb When was Lum being forced to love Ataru through mind control?
@@mahguvnah7403 ISTR a reference about using that technique to get a wish from an oni, but I can't find it at present.
I like the new take on the show it has a much more faster pace then the long ass storyline of the original. I can see this remake only going for 50-100 episodes but anything at this point is a blessing
46 eps are confirmed
Such an underated anime thats getting such a mass following
0:12 bro I don't mind having "MAPPA eyes" to work on Takahashi-sensei's stuff.
As for me, I originally have no idea that this is a reboot anime, I just happened to love David's Production anime like JoJo and Fire Force so that's why I'm here and I don't regret it.
he' hair is so pretty too, so colorful and its so glossy that in itself is otherworldly.
"conveniently triangular shape"
Uhm I'd hate to burst your bubble but a shape formed by connecting 3 points will always result in a triangle.
Yeah. Makes sense. Though I was glad they pushed the black hole thing to the first episode. It was really fun and great way to kick things off.
the 80s anime didnt adapt properly either
certain characters were introduced earlier then they actually were in the chapters
mostly being Jariten (hate him btw)
@@BillPlunderbonesTew8 no one should or can like him. This character is just so annoying !!
@@BillPlunderbonesTew8 nahh Ten is one of the best. he's a chaos merchant
@@rdablock there are better chaos merchants in the series
The remake has also cut out a lot of content, but since it's an episodic comedy that doesn't matter so much. The original anime kept more from the manga.
However, don't stay attached to the Shinobu Ataru relationship as that eventually just goes away in favor of Ataru and Lum. Which wasn't the idea at first but the fans loved Lum so much that Rumiko made the change.
Name a story where the main character meets a colorful, otherworldly girlfriend and he _doesn't_ pick her over the normal, girlfriend next door.
Idk anything about these shows but they have pleasant art styles that are nice on the eyes
Lum basically turned into zerotwo but half clothes.
I like how they almost didn't change the original artstyle and classic visual gags.
Also I like how this new generation is gonna fall in love with one of THE original waifus
The only issue I have with the new Urusei Yatsura is that it feels slightly rushed with the shows story progressing quite a bit faster than the original
They're different shows. Both good.
Lums new design is very close to her old design from near the end of the series or the movies.
I really hate the new design. Yellow eyes that don't pop against her skin and barely noticeable eyeshadow. Her original eyeshadow and eyes popped and grabbed your attention.
also similar in appearance to the character design used in the middle-to-late parts of the original manga series
The remake is better if you watch the original first
I have finished ranma1/2. It’s great. Comedy never die.
Interesting
There’s a lot of things I love about the new one but idk what it is I just like the older anime better I’m actually rewatching the old one because of the new series released and I do like the new one but idk it’s a weird mix feeling there’s a charm the old one has that isn’t there in the new one but in the end I still love this anime
Hasn’t gotten old to me lol it’s a fantastic show
now that we're 5 episodes in, I think I actually prefer this modern adaptation.
I cross my fingers for Maison Ikkoku references at least once 😅
Sadly this remake cannot capture the magic of the OG anime because its faithfully following the manga. The anime improved upon the manga due to synergy with the voice actors and writers involved. Megane for example is a crazed ball of hilarity in the OG anime, but in the manga he's little more then a background character.
This show kinda snuck up on me in the Fall season, but its always cool to see such a classic show reimagined
90s/80s anime are the besst
i can't stop watching the opening animation either
I hope ranma 1/2 gets rebooted too
Do they explain why the characters are using ancient phones when in the intro they have smartphones? Which time is the remake set in?
The intro is made for more modern audiences. But the anime itself was first made in 1980.
@@etheri0n959 oooh so the time period is the same as the original? Kinda got confused with the opening. I thought they were going to modernize things like sometimes happens with remakes
@@jbgra2566 yeah. Pretty sure it's the same time period as the original
Glad people are starting to like it
Oh and the outro music for the remake is straight 🔥 just for no reason, out of nowhere, lmao. xD
Every time an episode ends, it's time to boogie down!
The some reason about why a game of tag...
In japanese the game of tag is called Onigoko (the game of the oni, which is a japanese monster in between a demon and an ogre) which the alien species are... Oni... so IT IS their game...
Hmm, this is one of those series I put on my PTW list. Hopefully I'll get around to it eventually.
I'm not a big fan of lum's dance in the new one. It looks like those silly modern pop love idol dances. The old one had a discotheque charm to it that can't be replicated.
I get that. It's a part of the opening where you can tell it was made for more modern audiences
Honestly, the original design of Lum gives off the feeling of the uncanny valley, no, really, It feels like she's looking into your soul
This dude said “200 episodes” like that’s anything at all
Its a serial you really shouldn't be watching a large number of episodes at a time. It was made to be enjoyed by an audience who's exposer was spread over a long period of time. Serials just aren't made to be binged
I love Urusei Yatsura! I called her Lum!
She's my lovely girl!😍💘
For me I was expecting they add more modern setting in the reboot version
You know, I didn't get into Uruse Yatsura until the remake came out and after watching what's out for the remake at the time of me writing this comment, I decided to check out the original anime and I really enjoy it. Usually I'm not a big fan of animes that're pure comedy or at least the kind of comedy that's present in Urusei Yatsura but I've been used to Rumiko Takahashi's brand of comedy she puts into her animes and mangas so Urusei isn't all that different except it's more comedy based than nearly all her other properties.
And you can’t forget the bbc dub of the original… it’s effing epic!
It's not really fair to call the relationship a love triangle so much as Lum just being a psycho.
Shinobu and Ataru are already together.
Anyways it will be interesting to see who they get for the English Dub if that ever comes.
Watching the orginal and new. Liking both. MC reminds me of Tomoki from Heaven's Lost Property.
The MC of this anime is basicly Morty, but an Anime character.
I never watched the anime in the first place. Just got some clips on yt and it is the wildest shit I've ever seen. I am really not into anime manga so I'm kinda blown away whatever the hell is going on here
watch both 1st OG and 2nd remake
The 80s one drawing is God ish. The new one is just so ordenaly.
The original is far superior. The only thing I like about the new one is Lum's hair.
Of course you're smart enough to realize that so don't think like I'm talking down to you personally.
have you ever thought that this is kind of Ranma 1/2 completely flipped over? i mean Look at Lum doesnt she look a lot like Shampoo?
Except Urusei Yatsura came out 10 years before, so actually, it's Ranma that got the inspiration and definitely not the way aroud. Shampoo is a clear expy of Lum, to name one.
