We found a lot of the history stuff on a Japanese Golden Bat fansite, "The Sarcophagus of Atlantis" (ogonbatter.web.fc2.com). Turns out there's a TON of pre-war Golden Bat kamishibai by different artists, all stemming from the original, created by Ichiro Suzuki (not that one), and drawn by Takeo Nagamatsu. However, thanks to the war and less-than-ideal storage, not many original kamishibai survived the bombings. The ones you see nowadays are largely either brand new or reproductions of old ones. @@KasumiKenshirou The character, name, and pre-war kamishibai are public domain. The '66 movie is owned by Toei, and the '67 anime is owned by Asatsu DK, which absorbed the show's production company in the 90's.

I love the idea of a superhero who is just an esoteric force that no one understands or can control; he just shows up, destroys the villains without trying, and then leaves.
The different iterations of the character in media, different names for different languages, the inability of the franchise to get a new mainstream outing despite its popularity while also being one of the more obscure characters and also managing to be referenced action serieses to this day, and the unfortunate amount of lost media, ironically adds to the feeling of legend and mystery of the character both in canon and real life.
A skeleton, that doesn't talk, is invincible, beats up and destroys all the evil, with a crazy laugh - the most brilliantly simple idea for a superhero.

Wonder if that's where the got the laugh from for the movie Danger: Diabolik, which was probably the reason why the one Golden Bat film was released as Diabolic in Italy.
In México this character was known as "Fantasmagórico" and was broadcasted in the mid 70s, like it said in the video. Is one of those things that mexican fathers don't remember very well, because Ultraman and Princess comet was the icons for that generation, but if you casually mention a tv show with a golden skeleton fighting, they may respond with a spooky laugh.
My mom kept telling me this was her favorite show growing up as a kid! She's also from Mexico. Can't believe she's watched anime before and liked it growing up, like mother like son LOL.
Lol Korean here. My dad was born in the early 60s. When he was a college student, his nickname was Golden Bat (황금박쥐) because he had this tendency to appear and disappear randomly, in seemingly impossible timeframes. Didn't know that the OG Golden Bat was basically an invincible skeleton.

In an age of reboots and remakes, why the hell hasn’t this guy been brought back yet? I just learned about him and I immediately want to see a modern take on Golden Bat.

Theres a metric f*** ton of concepts and influence from the anime boom in the 80s and 90s that could be better adapted with this generation's production teams and techniques. And alumni that statistically worked on or around the original projects, and some insight into the directors original story beats. After seeing Devil Man Cry baby, I'm convinced the "weird anime" period has so much untapped potential and legacy just waiting to be brought into modern anime. Maybe not as direct adaptions (a lot of them were pretty LSD fueled and marginally coherent by the last half), but many can be reworked to keep what made it unique, and build a working story around it.
golden bat is like that one hero who doesnt require any credit or fame, he just purely does it because hes an absolute legend. And then he goes to obscurity when he isnt needed. Truly a character.
As you mentioned it, Golden Bat is known in Latin America by the name of "Fantasmagórico" and he is my dad's favorite hero of all time. Ever since I was a child, he told me the stories about this golden skeleton guy knight who emerged from the tears of a young lady in distress in the shape of a bat, and how powerful he was. He also mentioned his maniac laugh and how he wore a cape identical to Dracula's. For years, I've been trying to find some info on this character, but the only thing I could find was some of the very few remaining latin spanish dubbed episodes on youtube, because it seems the rest were burned in a fire caused by the 85s earthquake in Mexico City. If I knew his true name was Golden Bat, my research could've led me to him sooner. My dad has stated that ever since he watched this show, no other superhero have ever surpassed him before his eyes, and now I know he was saying the truth. Indeed, Golden Bat may be the greatest superhero of all time... Dad will be so happy to know his favorite superhero has such an important legacy :)
@@MinatheRaichu Thank you all for your kind comments :) Yes, I told him about this and the true origins of his favorite hero. He was very happy to know he came to existence prior to all the other superheroes, and a bit surprised too. Now that I brought it up to him, he told me one big reason he loved Golden Bat so much was because "he didn't talk at all", giving him a more genuine and solemn image. I strongly believe my dad is very fond to the idea I like to call "The essence of the hero", which part of it is the capability to speak beyond words through actions, and I believe Golden Bat portrays that idea very well. He asked me if I could find the series for him, but unfortunately the original Latin Spanish dub version is lost. I found the complete series in Italian dub, perhaps I could make some Spanish subs for him.
If we're talking "dark ages", we technically have Gilgamesh, Herakles, Beowulf, King Arthur.... And surely many more less popular classical heroes. Golden Bat seems to be one of the first modern retakes on these old stories, that in the 1960s exploded into the superhero scene.
Gilgamesh isn't even from the dark ages and is about the oldest hero known from the Epic of Gilgamesh which is from the time when the Babylonians were around, so around 3000 something B.C. How is that even close to the dark ages? Hercules is from the time of the Ancient Greeks, which would be around 1000 something or 500 BC. King Arthur and Beowulf are the only ones from around the middle ages. What does anyone on here even mean? I at least know the first guy, Arkaye Ch. was making a joke. Lycan Ferret you ruined it in a bit of dumb way even though the joke is already kinda dumb
One fun fact not mentioned in this video: before Golden Bat, there was a series of kamishibai featuring the protagonist named "Kuro Batto" (Black Bat) who is a bad guy and a phantom thief. In the final chapter of the series, he is beaten by Golden Bat who appears out of nowhere and is even stronger than Black Bat. It was the debut of Golden Bat, and the sequel featured him as the protagonist. The original kamishibai was lost during WW2 and there are no surviving images of how Black Bat actually looked like.

I just picked up the Japanese Batman manga and the first villain Bruce faces is a skeleton named Lord Death Man who is laughing nonstop and keeps rising from the dead. Pretty sure he's based on Golden Bat.
I'm from Italy, and we had tons of old anime represented (due to low-budget for local TVs), and Golden Bat (was about to write Fantaman) was still aired on TVs till 2010/14, and since i watched a LOT of the episodes, here's the general episode layout: Something happens People die Good doctor with kids: oh no, people are dying, what a shame Little girl who woke Golden Bat up gets in slightly danger from afar: GOLDEN BAAAAAAT!! Golden Bat arrives and beat the heck out of everything and everyone while laughing it off Golden Bat flies away Doctor and kids: another job well done
Oh, and let's not forget Dr. Nazo proclaiming "THE WORLD IS MINE!"... not sure if it's in the Japanese version to tell the truth, but in the Italian dub, he kept screaming that at least once per episode!
This character perfectly fit the description of a show my parents used to watch. In Poland it was known as Fantomas and apparently aired at night with all the more brutal/edgy stuff. My mum told me once, she fainted from the excitement, when once she hid in the closet, to watch it with the adults. Kinda hilarious if you ask me
Fantomas is a different character created earlier, a master thief and what we'd know today as an "anti-hero", but a character that heavily inspired the family of scare-the-crooks-senseless hero to which belongs Golden Bat, The Shadow, The Phantom, and the hero that brought it into the superhero age, The Bat-Man.
This has so many elements from everything, that I'm not convinced that this isn't just a time traveler going back in time trying to make a popular show

I would hold The Phantom as a Costume Hero. Since he do not have any superpowers. But costume heroes lead to superheroes. And of course the lines get a bit blurred with some superhero really being costume heroes using super science. But I guess the key there is super science.
Wow! I grew up in Baja California, Mexico in the 70's and my brothers and I used to watch this show on local TV. It was called Fantasmagorico and was dubbed in Latin Spanish. Whats more, a friend from school had a plastic figure with a detachable cape and baton! I remember asking hims where he got it, but that was so long ago that I can't remember what my then, friend at primary school answered. You had to wait until transmissions started at about 1 O'clock in the afternoon everyday. Every time the local TV channel would start transmission, an off-voice anouncer would read the whole listing of shows, soap operas, news programs, etc for that day, so I would stay every day and listen to the listing and see if Fantasmagorico or any other TV show of my liking would be showed that day! That was back then. I remember going to one of the local movie theaters and watching a full 2 hour long movie about Fantasmagorico, I must have been like 7 or 8 years old back then and my father took my brothers and I to that screening... So long ago, like 1972 or 1973...
I'm from Brazil and I was born in 2005, my father always told me and showed me many old animes like the Eighth Man and Fantomas/Golden Bat himself, I feel proud to know these legends from the past and I must certainly thank my father, I will show this video to him, for sure he will be very happy.
My dad always reminisces of “Fantasmagorico” he was born 1959 in Dominican Republic. He said it was huge back then and everybody watched it, often compares it with how big Dragon Ball got here in Latin America. I like when dad talks about it because he gets very excited and i can see how much he loved it.
Many writers are worried about making their main characters too powerful or competent for fear that it will make their stories uninteresting. Golden Bat thinks these people are cowards and cackles madly as he beats them with his stick.

Golden bat was made at a time when Japan was on thin ice with everyone. The great depression ruined their economy, but their military was stronger than ever. They got very imperialist, slowly taking over more of asia. Golden was a very clear product of the time. Citizens were in dire need of some quick entertainment, and Golden bat being invincible embodied the japanese military, the one good part of Japan at the time. Even the musketeer outfit was a product of the time, as Japan had been obsessed with European culture due to the Dutch being the only outsiders allowed in for centuries. The shift towards the "modern" design came after the second world war, when American forces brought their comic books and cartoons to Japan, which rubbed off on creators.

There was already a lot of manga and anime in Japan before the war. They are properly exhibited in museums. The idea that everything has its roots in America is a kind of illness.

I actually got to see a live kamishibai of Golden Bat in the International Manga Museum. The worst part about it is IT NEVER FINISHED. The original author never finished the story! He's particularly well known as the precursor to Batman, to the point that the first ever Batman comic was downright plagiarized from a Shadow story, to the point of having traced artwork from it. I rewatched this video because Golden Bat just got announced as a playable character a board game called Unmatched Adventures and I didn’t expect to ever see him pop up in any modern media.
The character is very popular in Brazil, among people in their 50s-70s. My dad (born 1949) used to tell me about FANTOMAS all the time when I was a kid, and I had seen pictures in magazines. My dad said he was the most powerful character ever, and now I see what he meant. Had no idea about the character's history, many thanks for yet another fantastic video! My dad is sadly no longer in this world with us, but watching the video made me remember him fondly. Heck, maybe he is in heaven, where all Golden Bat lost media is freely available... cheers Kenny!

It's amazing how far the cultural ripples can reach. Somehow the impact of some guys on a street corner doing what basically amounts to a puppet show for a handful of kids at a time has reached and influenced me, some dude in an American cornfield on the other side of the planet almost a century later. Makes you wonder if we'll have some kind of impact on the world we weren't anticipating long after we're gone.
I have no idea if it's the same character but... I grew up listening to French radio shows, and there was one that featured a skeleton that laughed called "Fantômas". So I think there's even more lost media on the radio as well!
That one is based on a villan called Fantomas based on a French book from 1913. Also had a skull mask on and most likely caused some countries to adopt the name for Golden Bat due to the similar appearance.
If you want to me technical, “Golden Bat” would probably be considered the first “Modern Superhero”. The first “Superhero” would be considered “The Epic of Gilgamesh”. The first recorded hero of literature. He had supernatural powers, fights “evil”, goes on epic quests and adventures and even learns lessons that make him a better leader and person when he comes back hime from his adventures.

I remember reading a golden bat manga years ago, and thinking it was insane but really fun. Then when I researched the franchise behind it I felt like i went insane with how old it was and how much was lost. And then I lost the source of that manga. My dad collected a lot of old movies and when I showed this vid to him he got that spark in his eye thinking he had it somewhere. We ended up watching the 66 film when I took him out on vacation that year. Very dumb, very fun. Just occurred to me today that was the last dumb movie binge I did with him before the big C got him. Technically there's an unpublished comic called "the super man" from 1933 if you wanted to get super specific, but Golden Bat still predated that by 2 years. First super hero worldwide is (I THINK) is springheeled jack from the penny dreadful comics.

This sounds like "Journey to the West" but with science. Golden Bat is Sun Wukong. He's got a magic staff, basically unlimited powers, and fights a monster of the week. Billy Bat by Naoki Urasawa seems to be at least partially inspired by Golden Bat and one of (spoilers) plot points is that Billy Bat is ancestral, having been represented in cave walls

I grew up in Japan with this. One of, if not the, coolest characters. It was kind of a joke, because the mysterious girl would call him by saying, "Bat-san, help us" (Kohmori-san, tasukete), which became a jokey catch-phrase for us kids when things were screwed up. But the Golden Bat was never anything but the coolest. All he did was laugh that sinister laugh (which was something everyone mimicked as well) and kick butt. Everyone from those days knew the opening lyrics from the cartoon: Where, where, where does he come from, Golden Bat? Only the bats know. (Doko, doko, doko kara kurunoka, Ogon Batto? Kohmori dake ga shitteiru.) Ah, memories! LOL

Saitama from 1 punch man is literally modern man Golden Bat. Gold Suit, Cape, wind power with said cape, Bald head, skeletal looking face, Invincible as heck, Very unbothered demeanor... The similarities are too close to be coincidental. Saitama's cape was even supposed to be red, originally, but was changed to white once the series got picked up. Golden Bat's 6th name is Saitama.
The next time we hear from Kenny he's gonna be a guest on Joe Rogan; talking about how Golden Bat was depicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls and how the Hadzu people of Africa mention Golden Bat appearing 300,000 years ago when men were still covered in fur. When James Cameron descended the Mariana Trench in a bathysphere and discovered a giant metallic door at the bottom: inside there was a room where Golden Bat was engraved in the wall by a pre-human civilization, and the only other person he told about this was Kenny. Nasa is going to land the Perseverance Rover on Mars, discover evidence and artifacts of an ancient alien civilization that was destroyed by nuclear holocaust, and one of the few things remaining will be a giant golden disk that contains an entire season of Golden Bat. The contents of which will be e-mailed directly to Kenny.
Soon enough Kenny will be notified about a 2 minutes clip of a lost Golden Bat episode hidden in the Cosmic Background Radiation, etched by a primordial intelligence from a time before time.
I hear that the figure of Golden Bat is engraved into the core of the Voyager space probe, so that extra terrestrials can appreciate him when our civilisation is long dead.
Well, now I know about Golden Bat. And you know, he's vanished like he apparently always did after saving the world that one last time. Logically, despite the aura of mystery that surrounds him because he's so obscure despite his popularity at the time and in various places around the world that did get him, it stands to reason that some day, Golden Bat will be revived again.

Well, the English dub intro to Phantoman has utterly infringing similarities to the intros of many Hanna Barbera shows. The similarities between said intro and such songs are some of the reasons why it got deleted off the face of this world!

There's a few things we cut for relevance and time, like "Dark Bat", Bat's rival in the '67 anime; or the monster Belobog in Shin Megami Tensei "if" having a cape and cane in direct homage.
We found a lot of the history stuff on a Japanese Golden Bat fansite, "The Sarcophagus of Atlantis" (ogonbatter.web.fc2.com). Turns out there's a TON of pre-war Golden Bat kamishibai by different artists, all stemming from the original, created by Ichiro Suzuki (not that one), and drawn by Takeo Nagamatsu. However, thanks to the war and less-than-ideal storage, not many original kamishibai survived the bombings. The ones you see nowadays are largely either brand new or reproductions of old ones. Give that site a look if you're interested.

Wonder if that's where the got the laugh from for the movie Danger: Diabolik, which was probably the reason why the one Golden Bat film was released as Diabolic in Italy.
In México this character was known as "Fantasmagórico" and was broadcasted in the mid 70s, like it said in the video. Is one of those things that mexican fathers don't remember very well, because Ultraman and Princess comet was the icons for that generation, but if you casually mention a tv show with a golden skeleton fighting, they may respond with a spooky laugh.
Also, "Zeeeerooo", because the villain was named Dr. Zero in Spanish.

Theres a metric f*** ton of concepts and influence from the anime boom in the 80s and 90s that could be better adapted with this generation's production teams and techniques. And alumni that statistically worked on or around the original projects, and some insight into the directors original story beats.
After seeing Devil Man Cry baby, I'm convinced the "weird anime" period has so much untapped potential and legacy just waiting to be brought into modern anime.
Maybe not as direct adaptions (a lot of them were pretty LSD fueled and marginally coherent by the last half), but many can be reworked to keep what made it unique, and build a working story around it.

As you mentioned it, Golden Bat is known in Latin America by the name of "Fantasmagórico" and he is my dad's favorite hero of all time. Ever since I was a child, he told me the stories about this golden skeleton guy knight who emerged from the tears of a young lady in distress in the shape of a bat, and how powerful he was. He also mentioned his maniac laugh and how he wore a cape identical to Dracula's. For years, I've been trying to find some info on this character, but the only thing I could find was some of the very few remaining latin spanish dubbed episodes on youtube, because it seems the rest were burned in a fire caused by the 85s earthquake in Mexico City. If I knew his true name was Golden Bat, my research could've led me to him sooner. My dad has stated that ever since he watched this show, no other superhero have ever surpassed him before his eyes, and now I know he was saying the truth. Indeed, Golden Bat may be the greatest superhero of all time... Dad will be so happy to know his favorite superhero has such an important legacy :)

@@MinatheRaichu Thank you all for your kind comments :) Yes, I told him about this and the true origins of his favorite hero. He was very happy to know he came to existence prior to all the other superheroes, and a bit surprised too. Now that I brought it up to him, he told me one big reason he loved Golden Bat so much was because "he didn't talk at all", giving him a more genuine and solemn image. I strongly believe my dad is very fond to the idea I like to call "The essence of the hero", which part of it is the capability to speak beyond words through actions, and I believe Golden Bat portrays that idea very well. He asked me if I could find the series for him, but unfortunately the original Latin Spanish dub version is lost. I found the complete series in Italian dub, perhaps I could make some Spanish subs for him.
I like how this started with an obscure anime and proceeds to explain how Golden Bat is responsible for ALL MEDIA SINCE THE DARK AGES.
If we're talking "dark ages", we technically have Gilgamesh, Herakles, Beowulf, King Arthur.... And surely many more less popular classical heroes. Golden Bat seems to be one of the first modern retakes on these old stories, that in the 1960s exploded into the superhero scene.

One fun fact not mentioned in this video: before Golden Bat, there was a series of kamishibai featuring the protagonist named "Kuro Batto" (Black Bat) who is a bad guy and a phantom thief. In the final chapter of the series, he is beaten by Golden Bat who appears out of nowhere and is even stronger than Black Bat. It was the debut of Golden Bat, and the sequel featured him as the protagonist. The original kamishibai was lost during WW2 and there are no surviving images of how Black Bat actually looked like.

Wow! I grew up in Baja California, Mexico in the 70's and my brothers and I used to watch this show on local TV. It was called Fantasmagorico and was dubbed in Latin Spanish. Whats more, a friend from school had a plastic figure with a detachable cape and baton! I remember asking hims where he got it, but that was so long ago that I can't remember what my then, friend at primary school answered. You had to wait until transmissions started at about 1 O'clock in the afternoon everyday. Every time the local TV channel would start transmission, an off-voice anouncer would read the whole listing of shows, soap operas, news programs, etc for that day, so I would stay every day and listen to the listing and see if Fantasmagorico or any other TV show of my liking would be showed that day! That was back then. I remember going to one of the local movie theaters and watching a full 2 hour long movie about Fantasmagorico, I must have been like 7 or 8 years old back then and my father took my brothers and I to that screening... So long ago, like 1972 or 1973...

I'm from Brazil and I was born in 2005, my father always told me and showed me many old animes like the Eighth Man and Fantomas/Golden Bat himself, I feel proud to know these legends from the past and I must certainly thank my father, I will show this video to him, for sure he will be very happy.

My dad always reminisces of “Fantasmagorico” he was born 1959 in Dominican Republic. He said it was huge back then and everybody watched it, often compares it with how big Dragon Ball got here in Latin America.

Golden bat was made at a time when Japan was on thin ice with everyone. The great depression ruined their economy, but their military was stronger than ever. They got very imperialist, slowly taking over more of asia. Golden was a very clear product of the time. Citizens were in dire need of some quick entertainment, and Golden bat being invincible embodied the japanese military, the one good part of Japan at the time. Even the musketeer outfit was a product of the time, as Japan had been obsessed with European culture due to the Dutch being the only outsiders allowed in for centuries. The shift towards the "modern" design came after the second world war, when American forces brought their comic books and cartoons to Japan, which rubbed off on creators.

I actually got to see a live kamishibai of Golden Bat in the International Manga Museum. The worst part about it is IT NEVER FINISHED. The original author never finished the story! So we were left with "To be continued..." I was so sad.

I rewatched this video because Golden Bat just got announced as a playable character a board game called Unmatched Adventures and I didn’t expect to ever see him pop up in any modern media.
The character is very popular in Brazil, among people in their 50s-70s. My dad (born 1949) used to tell me about FANTOMAS all the time when I was a kid, and I had seen pictures in magazines. My dad said he was the most powerful character ever, and now I see what he meant. Had no idea about the character's history, many thanks for yet another fantastic video! My dad is sadly no longer in this world with us, but watching the video made me remember him fondly. Heck, maybe he is in heaven, where all Golden Bat lost media is freely available... cheers Kenny!

It's amazing how far the cultural ripples can reach. Somehow the impact of some guys on a street corner doing what basically amounts to a puppet show for a handful of kids at a time has reached and influenced me, some dude in an American cornfield on the other side of the planet almost a century later. Makes you wonder if we'll have some kind of impact on the world we weren't anticipating long after we're gone.
I have no idea if it's the same character but... I grew up listening to French radio shows, and there was one that featured a skeleton that laughed called "Fantômas". So I think there's even more lost media on the radio as well!
That one is based on a villan called Fantomas based on a French book from 1913. Also had a skull mask on and most likely caused some countries to adopt the name for Golden Bat due to the similar appearance.
If you want to me technical, “Golden Bat” would probably be considered the first “Modern Superhero”. The first “Superhero” would be considered “The Epic of Gilgamesh”. The first recorded hero of literature. He had supernatural powers, fights “evil”, goes on epic quests and adventures and even learns lessons that make him a better leader and person when he comes back hime from his adventures.

Then when I researched the franchise behind it I felt like i went insane with how old it was and how much was lost. And then I lost the source of that manga. My dad collected a lot of old movies and when I showed this vid to him he got that spark in his eye thinking he had it somewhere. We ended up watching the 66 film when I took him out on vacation that year. Very dumb, very fun. Just occurred to me today that was the last dumb movie binge I did with him before the big C got him. I grew up in Japan with this. One of, if not the, coolest characters. It was kind of a joke, because the mysterious girl would call him by saying, "Bat-san, help us" (Kohmori-san, tasukete), which became a jokey catch-phrase for us kids when things were screwed up.
But the Golden Bat was never anything but the coolest. All he did was laugh that sinister laugh (which was something everyone mimicked as well) and kick butt.
Everyone from those days knew the opening lyrics from the cartoon: Where, where, where does he come from, Golden Bat? Only the bats know. (Doko, doko, doko kara kurunoka, Ogon Batto? Kohmori dake ga shitteiru.)

The similarities are too close to be coincidental. Saitama's cape was even supposed to be red, originally, but was changed to white once the series got picked up.

Well, now I know about Golden Bat. And you know, he's vanished like he apparently always did after saving the world that one last time. Logically, despite the aura of mystery that surrounds him because he's so obscure despite his popularity at the time and in various places around the world that did get him, it stands to reason that some day, Golden Bat will be revived again.

Italy always got the best intros. The music they made for Sailor Moon still makes me laugh from just how ridiculously good it is. Like they just had to get to a 6 to be perfectly acceptable and they just up and went and rolled perfect 20s because they could.
@@Krystalmyth That's true, although we consider the 90s a dark era when it comes to anime TV openings. The golden age of Italian anime TV intros went from the late 70s to the middle of the 80s.
For a number of reasons, by the 90s (and beyond) ALL the TV intros were cheaply made with synthesizers by a tiny group of the same people, Sailor Moon came out at the height of this era.

Well, the English dub intro to Phantoman has utterly infringing similarities to the intros of many Hanna Barbera shows. The similarities between said intro and such songs are some of the reasons why it got deleted off the face of this world!
@@SlapstickGenius23 Ah that makes sense. "Fantaman's" intro was actually different, as we usually rewrote all intro songs ourselves and made entirely new intros (Heck during the 90s and early 2000s, sailor moon had 5 different intros, and all very good too if I may add)

There’s also a manga, drawn in the classic style that features a remarkably similar character to golden bat. He is an ancient warrior forged from Orichalcum who after defeating the ultimate enemy became lost to time and forgot his memories. Having revived in the modern day hew get about his daily life as an odd jobs man, all the while unknowingly being stalked and assailed by henchmen of the ultimate evil doer. Afraid that he will regain his memories and seek revenge.
That's what came to my mind at first. The manga was called Wahaman.

Oooohhh...Imagine he's an alternate-universe The Batman Who Laughs, one of which, is a fusion of an ancient god of order and an ancient god of chaos, his counterpart.
Batman was inspired by The Phantom. I wonder if there's any connection between Golden Bat and The Phantom? They are awefuly different though, aside from some versions of their names being the same, and both featuring skulls, and both achieving ridiculously unbelievable feats albeit in different ways.

It is often said that his intellect reminds people of Sherlock Holmes, his origin story and modus operandi remind people of Zorro and his dark and brooding personality remind people of Dracula (especially the Gothic Horror stuff), but even then, it's still oversimplified.

He's back in board game form! In Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze (2023), you get to chose him as one of your heros to fend off against the likes of the mothman, skunk ape, jersey devil, the blob and even an alien. Great to see he's not forgotten
