I don't mind them both, they both have their charm and I admire that the reboot is trying to do something different to appeal to both old and new generation fans
Yeah, old one was a show that put Mamoru Oshii in people's view, and inspired a ton of people with its animation, and the new one is a nostalgia fueled cashgrab, they both have their merits.
@e1622zelda I mean, maybe it's good, I'm not arguing that. But it's not directed by Mamoru Oshii, and isn't that stylistically varied, interesting or daring, its a straight forward manga adaptation, as far as I know, and og show was much more than that. I think the new one just won't stand the test of time, like the old one did, because of how daring it was. The first 10 or so episodes of the og are pretty bad though, and then when Oshii left it also became less interesting.
Both of them are good there is no better version. Both of them are have there charm. The both are the the same story that rumiko sensei created because she loved anime and manga and wanted to do that. Comparing the two is a waste of time
After jumping back on forth between the old and new one that is only correct answer. In the old one everything is exaggerated or you can say that the new one is more watered down. But tbh I find myself spacing out while watching the old one. There is so much going on that it makes me numb. The new one is an easier watch and not to mention the new artstyle is gorgeous.
@@azraelthebloodedge6994 The new one has a worse soundtrack, significantly fewer episodes to explore characters, a huge lack of details, and no movies to go along with it. The old one is better, it’s not even close.
It's worth noting that, in the 80s Urusei Yatsura, the general level of misanthropy does ebb over time, something that's most noticeable in Shinobu's character. However, the staff of that show continually push boundaries further and further. The comedic timing is continually spot on, with an intensifying energy in many episodes matching Regular Show; the animation is often impressive even to this day, such as with Lum's skating tricks or the first-person chase sequences; and the tone of the show gets more and more varied, with some episodes dropping the comedy almost entirely in lieu of stuff that's sentimental, or action-packed, or unsettling. Really grunge themes start to emerge of, like, societal dissatisfaction, and the irreplaceable yet fleeting nature of youth, and the perils of chasing impossible dreams. Heck, the fourth movie is pretty much an art film, inviting the audience to an uncomfortable position of acknowledging how the show evolved over time and, while Tomobiki will always be in our hearts, our time in it as viewers must one day end -- like youth, trying to make it go on forever will lead to self-destruction. Really avant-garde stuff, and you can consistently see the staff's passion and skill shining through the entire UY production. (Incidentally, though I am not as huge of a fan of it, I also think their more grounded and mature follow-up in Maison Ikkoku is also impeccably directed). I don't want to knock David Production's work on the remake as terrible, as it's clear their putting in a solid effort, and the colors and character designs are all quite quality. That being said, I do get the sense that they're on autopilot, reusing many of their tricks for Jojo that just don't translate to UY's style of storytelling. There's an over-reliance on on-screen onomatopoeia and moments of high-intensity color shifts, but while in Jojo that helps in giving form and intensity to the characters' inner machinations and their stands' more abstract powers, here it just feels kind of weak. As though it's a substitute for the strong composition and timing of the original, or a manifestation of a pressure to "stick closer to the original manga" taken too literally. There's also a sense that somebody misunderstood why people screamed a bunch in the original show. The characters got loud often in the original as well, but there was more buildup to those moments. And when they screamed, they freaking SCREAMED; it was as though they had an entirely different voice for when they were mad, Ran especially so! DavidPro were kind of given an impossible task when asked to re-adapt UY; the original, for a variety of reasons, was lighting-in-a-bottle, and trying to reinterpret the manga again when the first adaptation was such a landmark would inevitably yield tough comparisons. That being said, I think if this were given to a different team or if the direction was stronger, there could have been something that either recaptured the spirit of the original or was different but stood out in it's own right.
I really like the new version for what it is. When it was first announced last year, I expected to hate it because the original happens to be my favorite anime series of all time, especially as the og story/animation kept getting better as the series progressed. It was okay, I still prefer the original, but everyone are free to like what they want!
New version comes closer to what it was in the original manga. This version pretty much removes making the mob characters themselves as they never were in the original manga.
@@etheri0n959 I figured as much. But when anime ends up getting a remake in Japan, unlike here in the west where they tend to stray even further from the source material, in Japan they tend to skew closer to it. But at any rate, Urusei Yatsura already has a huge cast so I don't miss the anime only characters with the mostly uninspired names.
I'm glad you enjoyed the new adaptation. I personally found the original adaptation's versions of the characters insanely more memorable for the reason I've stated, but glad you like it
@@etheri0n959 I agree 100%. People have that same argument with Sailor Moon Crystal “but it’s closer to the manga!” But the barebones manga is absolute horseshit with no character development and the 90s anime version with filler episodes actually gave nuance to the characters. 😂 sometimes purists can be very annoying. It’s called an “adaption” for a reason. Even Harry Potter differs from the book. Like come on
@@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736 The Harry Potter books are better than the movies. The books have more humor in them. In the movies they have to cut stuff out to fit the run time. Especially in the later ones.
Mamoru Oshii (Director of the of the original series until beautiful dreamer) never saw himself as a good comedic director. On the contrary he was a fantastic one. it’s hard to replicate his style.
I just appreciate the 2022 anime got me in to this franchise to begin with. I can't really comment on the differences from the original since I've never seen it. -but I'm inclined to agree that there was more narrative substance going on in that Christmas episode. However without that context I still found the remake to be just as emotionally resonant and I can tell there has been a lot of care put in to the new adaptation. There was always going to be changes bringing it in to a new era and landscape of anime. I think it might be more of a case of both having their pros and cons. It's just a matter of personal preference really...
The original Urusei Yatsura episode 10 8:17 had more of a big storytelling for lum and her darling aka Ataru with great voice actor's both Fumi hirano as Lum and TOSHIO FURUKAWA as Ataru perfect together ❤️⚡☺️
Never really thought about it until now that you mentioned them but Ataru's friends feel like more of an afterthought in the new adaptation. Design-wise Megane in particular looks like a mob character.
After Urusei Yatsura'd became weekly manga on shounen sunday I'm pretty sure 90% of the class students are just mob characters, the entire cast are just Mendou, Shinobu, Lum and Ataru. Sometime Ryo as well
You made your points perfectly! The Xmas episode's hilarious yet subtly sweet plot moved me to tears back in the 80s... and still does. Many talented artists crafted the original manga adaptation, and it shows in every episode. Terrific upload, ARIGATŌ!!
There is NO anime like the original. You can tell the people who worked on that show WANTED to be there. It’s one of, not only the greatest anime, but greatest SHOWS I ever seen.
The reboot is fantastic but yeah the original is a little bit better by 1%. I am not nostalgic for Urusei Yatsura. I am watching both for the first time at the same time. *Reboot* Pro: Introduces the characters faster, has a better art style, has awesome theme songs and it's basically the same story Con: They censor the violence a bit more. They have more freeze frames. *Original:* Pro: It's a little bit funnier and we get more Ten. He is one of my favorite characters. The episodes are longer after the first 20 so they have time to put in more jokes. *Con:* The art style shows it's age but it still looks good. It also takes forever to introduce the characters. Ruyoko is one of my favorite characters and she shows up sooner in the reboot.
It makes sense though. mamoru oshii was responsible for many episodes in the OG urusei yatsura and his love for the cinema and shot composition really shines. Also the OG urusei yatsura had many surreal moments and it got weird at times and the 80's aesthetics really helped the show. While enjoying the new one, I felt the entire show lacks the "Vibe"
Both animes are unique of its own. The original adaptation inserted a lot of creativity that isn't in the manga, and the new one insterted creative things while being true to the manga. I like both anime at least, and I really enjoy watching them.
2:13 That teacher was only there for one episode. Onsen-Mark (The teacher from the reboot) was their teacher from episode 37 onward, although I do recall him appearing at the end of episode 5 as an unnamed teacher.
Both versions are very good.. The new version is a greater representation of what the creator probably wanted… but the character development of the old series is a lot better…. All of the original old characters have taken a life of their own..
I honestly like the reboot a bit more because it seems to follow the manga a lot closer XD also the visuals are colorful and I like that. The OG has great scenes and jokes too tho
They are both good, but the original is obviously 10 times better. A lot of stuff is missing due to how condensed the new show is. It's like a lot of characters are almost absent.
I've watched both and I truly enjoyed both versions, both have charm and are truly entertaining. It's just people's preferences. Doesn't really bother me this is just like how most folks prefer DBZ than DBZ Kai.
Onsen is Ataru's teacher for virtually all of the show, he didn't replace the older teacher, the latter isn't even a proper character to begin with. Putting that aside I agree with you completely, maybe it was because of Mamoru Oshii or because the show has some of that "80's magic", anyways, if you dislike the new one having only watched 10 chapters of the original, you'll absolutely hate the remake by the time you fully watch the 1981 version , i say this since that one's first 50 or so episodes aren't the best the show has to offer, like, at all.
Really? I thought episode 10 was really strong. But if there's even better stuff coming im all for it. Really excited to watch more of the original show now
Really? I am on the first 50 of the original. My favorite episodes are The Mendou Siblings, The Caterpillar, The body switching one, and Parents Day. The ending to parents day is comedy gold.
It's been awhile since I watched the og Urusei Yatsura I remember Osen being the main teacher and there was this other teacher who has there for a couple episodes the one he showed. I couldn't remember if he was the teacher before osen or something , was he a substitute or was he replaced by osen
The new one is fine and a solid introduction for new viewers. But the older version is definitely better. Also the teacher that appeared in the reboot was also a mainstay in the original, they just took awhile until they replace the other one.
As a big fan of the original, I would say the new series is pretty good, but it's like reading an abridged version of a book. So it's missing chunks of narrative development the original had with longer episode counts for the story arcs.
wow, this video put me to tears. i totally forgot about how they chose to portray lum as a literal INVADER. its been a few years since ive seen the original and i have been really enjoying the remake. i definitely feel a difference but it was hard to put into words. i do still feel like the remake has ALOT of effort put into it, but thats mostly because every other remake feels heartless in comparison. i am also very happy with all the new merch that has been released and i hope we get more!
keep in mind, though both being based on the manga. the new urusei yatsura, is alot more aligned with the manga. Mamoru Oshii(yes that mamoru oshii) really put his stamp on the character and the humor during his tenor on the show, which is like 100 episodes or so plus the first couple of films.
I kinda prefer the new one, normally i'm for the older versions of things because the new one tends to screw something up or the director does something drastic. But honestly I like the new one more because it's more concentrated on it's comedy then the older version which it's comedy is SO CHAOTIC especially in the sound mixing and editing. Yes everyone in the newer version isn't as backstabby in the original but it's more subtle this time. Everyone is still motivated by shallow self interest but it's not as out loud and more conniving to me which i can appreciate more.
Hi, person who has actually been around when the original was airing. Honestly, I feel the recreation does lack the mean spirit of the original, but it's frankly for the better. The original also took a lot of liberties which yes, they were good, but an adaptation could never inherit a lot of them because it would just not work in modern times. Honestly I'm glad the adaptation exist. Urusei Yatsura is such old anime that is difficult to fully present to new audencies, and this has definitely sparked a lot of interest back in a very good franchise sometimes shadowed by his more famous cousins.
I cannot imagine the pressure and expectations of trying to adapt this iconic show, and satisfy old fans and newcomers. I admit that I'm still wondering WHY anyone would choose to do this, but it's not like I'm upset about it. I just hope that in this first season they can really make it "theirs" and that it can stand on its own merits.
Oshii was just a more masterful director than the reboot, let's face that as a plain fact. And the crew of animators kind of synced with him. There's a video by STEVEM posted just 2 days ago all about Oshii and him being handed the Urusei Yatsura series and how he pushed boundaries, he got in a bit of trouble for exposing Lum's breasts in just the 1st episode in a primetime spot. He replied with a smirk.
i think the only thing that's missing on the reboot version is the exaggerated expressions. it kinda feels like the director want to play it safe rather than letting the animators do whatever they want to make the animation feels more like animation.
People keep making the mistakes of thinking that since the new is more close to the manga, allegedly, it means all the characterization in the old one was thanks to Oshii
The new show is more true to the Manga. But the old one had Mamorou Oshi taking lots of creative liberties to turn the ideas from the manga into more of a show. They're both great to have though. I wouldn't say the new version is "redundant". I think if you want a show that's more literal to Rumiko Takahashi's work, then you'll prefer the new anime. But if you want something that is more dramatic and artsy, then the old one is absolutely better, especially in it's first two seasons.
This reminds me of Stephen King thinking the Shining wasn't good cuz it didn't tell the story he wanted. Then he made his own production company and showed us what his vision was and... they sucked. A book is not a movie and a manga isn't an anime. The director of the anime clashed with the manga writer but she should have staid in her lane lol.
@@Acesahn I will say, after watching every episode of the original and the first four movies? (still need to watch the OVA and final two films). I will say there's part of me that gets Rumiko's frustrations though. Like if you're Rumiko, and this is your property, and you don't have the foresight to know you'll go on to also get huge success with Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, you'd want that Urusei Yatsura train to last as long as possible. So I understand why she was frustrated when Oshi really insisted on moving things forward in Season 2. And ESPECIALLY in Movie 2's ending. As much as I really liked Movie 2, I can see why she hated it at the time. Where I think Oshi's direction was at it's best was his slow pacing of introducing characters between Seasons 1 and 2, his creation of Megane, bringing Ten in early but then quickly relegating him to be more of an occasional side character but keeping him established, and generally knowing when to "kick it up a notch" and give the animators some opportunities to really express themselves and show off their skills. That final point being the one thing that I think Oshi's replacement, Yamazaki, still did well in Seasons 3 and 4. Really I feel like Beautiful Dreamer (movie 2) had a great point that the worst fate for the series was to become "Simpsons'd" and just be an infinite loop where no progress is ever made. And I think the sheer burnout of the anime team in Season 4 (and especially in Movie 4) was really, really showing. I think there's an alternate reality where the 80s run of Urusei Yatsura never stopped, and it just became "Simpsons'd" and became another Dragon Ball or One Piece kind of property where it just keeps going forever? But there's a lot of factors in our reality for why that didn't happen, and really I think it was fated for the better this way. And really, after reading quite a bit of the manga. As much as I agree that I prefer the 80s version, I think that the 2022 version is important. I think it gives a frustrated Rumiko some deserved closure. Like there's a feeling as a fan, going and watching the jaded and cynical production that Movie 4 was, and seeing the original animators at the darkest depths of their artistic burnout and Yamazaki's bitter contempt for the hardcore fans. Going from that into watching something like the 2022 anime is a refreshing feeling of "Hey remember when this was all this series was?" It feels like a much lighter and simple series. And you know that even with great success it's not going to last forever, so it's almost just a simple treat for the fans at this point. In a way I think it oddly brings some necessary closure to an IP that has a very strange and complicated history.
I watched 5 episodes of the new one and 4 episodes of the old one. I have to say I like the new one more. I might watch the old one sometime in the future but first I will watch the new one.
Well I agree that Megane's gang weren't so enthusiastic and crazy as the OG adaptation I really missed the crazy obssesion of Megane with Lum, specially cause Shigeru Chiba performance as Megane was top notch (well at least he was recasted as Ryunossuke's dad, which is a great role for him anyway) Well about Onsen mark which is the name of the teacher that appears in the new adaptation, is actually in the original UY anime, he's the teacher of Ataru's class mostly in the series, yeah there are 3 teachers before him, (like the one you mentioned) but they aren't as relevant as Onsen mark in my opinion, so sticking with Onsen mark from beginning to end isn't a bad choice for me, and about the christmas episode yeah I think it has some lack of detail, like atmosphere and thematic, but I don't think the episode wouldn't work as well with the relationship of Lum and Ataru, in both the original version and the new one Lum saves Ataru of being humillated, so in both cases the point and the consequences are the same, but yeah in that regard the original version showed the events of this episode much better. Personally I think the new adaptation is good and funny, but the original has the charm of the 80's, cause UY is a Lovecom from the 1978 to the 80's and remaking a lovecom from the 80's is really hard nowadays, cause there's a lot of details and characterization that won't trascend as well as the original version, for example Ataru's personallity, some jokes would have to be turn down a little and that is not an easy task at all, in the end I think both adaptations are very good, and the new one it was very successful too. I think it isn't about which one is better or not, I think the focus should be if the new UY show works well in this era or not, and I think it does pretty good, they modernized the show pretty well, the original always gonna have more details and charm cause is an 80's anime, but this new adaptation brought very well the humor of UY to this era, well I think that if it would be necessary to make a more fair comparison we should wait until the new adaptation finishes.
Today 2024 after the show’s completion i find the original is vastly more interesting and more satisfying. The new adaptation does fall short and it does feel watered down.
I disagree with most of this. I never really thought about Ataru's friends that much. I am more interested in the main characters. Ataru, Lum, Shinobu, Ruyonske, Royoku, Mendou, etc. I would rather see them get more focus.
You disagree, but you say you didn't care for ataru's friends that much. Isn't that proof that what I said about them not being interesting is true? I don't mean to be hostile and I'm sorry if I came off that way, but I'd just like to hear more about this from your perspective
@@etheri0n959 In the original I kinda just see them as the mob of Lum stormtroopers. I saw them as more plot devices than characters kinda like the citizens of Bikini Bottom and their constant angry mobs. I can take them or leave them.
I see. Okay. In that case, I guess the new adaptation improved them since they cut down on the scenes including them, but because of that, it ends up negatively affecting the dramatic beat that happens in episode 5 of the new adaptation for the reasons I've stated in my video. If it didn't for you, that's great. I hope we can civilly agree to disagree.
@@etheri0n959 I agree with you parcially on Ataru's friends they do seem to be toned down in the new anime but you acting like they never support Ataru was kinda wrong because they do it in the original anime as well. They team up on occasion in the original anime and the episode where Ataru friends help Ataru win class president and help him win the bet against Mendo are also in the original anime.
@@icecreamhero2375 your acting like they arent plot devices in the new anime , in the original they had way more personality now there kinda just background characters they don't even tell you there names in the new anime
This is interesting. I'm British, and I didn't really get Urusei Yatsura until I saw those British dubbed episodes. The joke you criticised for having no build up actually really made me cackle. It's much closer to British humour in that execution than American. Obviously both are actually Japanese humour. And I do like both. But I do prefer the reboot. I found the joke delivery hit me harder and I wonder if that's because of my nationality. I noticed US media has a lot of set up and explanation with their jokes!
I prefer the look of the original Urusei Yatsura anime. The new Urusei Yatsura does a better job in capturing the look of the manga (although the character designs are a lot more representative of Rumiko Takahashi's art towards the end of the manga's run than the early art, which was very simple in comparison) but it just feels cold and digital to me while the original anime had a hand-painted warmth to it that can't really be replicated in digital. I also just prefer the colour palette of the original anime.
the original urusei yatsura manga is really great. it was written by one of the all-time greats rumiko takahashi whose resume speaks for itself. but the thing is while the urusei yatsura manga is fantastic, the 1980s anime adaptation is a masterpiece. and i know that as a fan boy that probably doesnt mean much coming from me, but if you just look at the staff. the og director for the first half of the series was mamoru oshii, THE mamoru oshii of patlabor and ghost in the shell fame. it had the voice talents of toshio furukawa and shigeru chiiba, people who are industry legends now but who were still just rising up back then. fumi hirano just IS lum to me. and those first early episodes of the original are the ROUGH episodes, the series only improves with its run time. and thats kind of the problem with the new adaptation. the original anime is one of those rare productions that improves upon the original in almost every way, but the new version is kind of just an adaptation. its a solid adaptation, 90% of manga would only be so lucky to get an adaption like this especially something as old as urusei yatsura, but i cant say i prefer it over the source material and i definitely cant say i prefer it over the 1980s anime.
I realized what you did in the first episode. The scene where Shinobu promises to marry Ataru if he succeeds in saving earth was all I needed to see. In the original Ataru is acting ULTRA dramatic as if trying to manipulate Shinobu's emotions with a "And tomorrow we may all die" speech only for Shinobu to agree with his self deprecations that his horniness is the cause for all of this which shoots his plan right in the foot lol. In the new one nothing like this happens, they couldn't recreate it.
Rumiko takahashi born October 10, 1957. Her Zodiac sign is Libra(the second decan of Aquarius ♒). Ruled by Planet Venus and sub-ruled by both planet Saturn and Uranus.
I think the main thing is that the original UA was very "raw" like there was a lot of anger and bitterness in the characters that was pretty funny. In the "new" UA it's very much targeted towards people who feel a lot of nostalgia towards the characters and in particular nostalgia for the romantic relationship between Lum and Ataru that sort of develop over the entire series.
I laughed and sobbed so much with the 2022 amine. Then I watched the old one looking at the recommendations like this, but unfortunately, I was bored. Anime drawing is often quite bad. Gags are not sharp. The worst thing is that the story goes quite slow like buying time. I was frustrated. I felt good-bad really depends on the person. Or old guys tend to glorify old amine they watched young time?
Lum isn't entirely innocent in the original anime but I think the animation team had a soft spot for her so some aspects of her character were softened just a little. She's still pretty posessive of Ataru, she's got a bit of a history of not being the best friend or self absorbed sometimes. But the OG anime is far kinder to her character. Which is fair because for Takahashi - Lum was originally this one shot character and the series was gonna have other wacky things happen to Ataru as part of the series with Shinobu as the long suffering girlfirend. After one chapter without her - the Okatu fans sent so many requests for her to come back that Ateru's friends were originally written in as those Otaku that just really wanted Lum back - which happened for the following chapters after. The original takes a bit more from the original manga and they stay more "straight" with the Manga so you get more of Lum being not only posessive, but also being almost deliberately malicious against Shinobu or Ataru. Where the OG anime generally tries to have Ateru or someone else do something on purpose or via misunderstanding to earn her ire.
Megan and Lum's stormtroopers are great because the reason they hate Ataru so much is why many in the audience hate Ataru. He got a beautiful alien waifu and... he doesn't even want her! Whats worse is she doesn't want anyone but him! This pisses them off so much lol
As an Urusei Yatsura scholar I disagree heavily with this video, I see where you're coming from but personally I found a lot of the characters in the 70s version way too cartoonishly one note and the story itself got lost in the majority of it's episodes being filler. This did lead to some great anime original episodes but I am very happy with this updated, more accurate interpretation of the manga that still keeps the heart of the series
me and my husband love them both of course Mendo had a lot of Nazi like images. example when Mendo and Lum’s mothers fought each other in the original series and someone referred to the Mendo conglomerates Panzer division. my husband is grew up in the early 90s and watched this series at Misawa AFB as a little boy i was born in the 90s so i watched this series later and love the original. the music of the original was great and it’s what is missing in the new one. especially Lum’s love song which was played once in a while when it was very prevalent in the original.
I hate the new smooth animation. The older and more jagged and rough animation just has so much more charm, like humans animated it instead of a computer.
Thanks for the analysis. I never read the manga and im wondering if the old anime is more accurate to the manga . Specifically the points you made about the people in the town being assholes and cynical backstabbing or two faced jerks lol. Honestly , todays society NEEDS to see the orginal anime for that , cuz it will act as a mirror for them all cuz many people today are really self absorbed fake pieces of shit 😂
idk i really l ike the new reboot i mean i didnt watch the old one but i just love the new it has a very beautiful charm to it i cant ignore and i had massive fun watching it
NOO actually the teacher that you're talking about in the new adaptation is called Onsen-mark and no in the original version that old teacher is also replaced with Onsen-mark and he's much better of a character there too! you should've watched more to see that, Onsen-mark then stays till like the end of the series. But also I do hate how the new show starts it by Ataru running and no one knows what the hell is going on, but the original shows you what actually happened before you get confused. The new show shifts some characters in both how they look which depends on the dumb new artstyle, but we gotta cope with it anyways then :\, and it shifts their characteristics like in the original version Lum's father is shown as a man with high loyalty and place and is a nice simple person with new people while the new show shows all of that except they show him as an evil invader instead, you can literally see that in the first episode and you'll get what I mean. I also HATE how they changed the 4 friends of Ataru's, well just like what they say, every masterpiece DOES have a cheap copy. But honestly, I am grateful that they at least thought of the show and made a reboot for it last year, it could have gone worse not gonna lie, I just hope they don't frick anything up anyway.
Personally I enjoy the new anime a lot, but yeah it’s very much not directed by mamoru oshii. Though aside from the jokes pointed out here I think most of them are fairly similar in terms of how they hit much more often than not. I’m not really that broken up about the stakes in the kumino otoko episode because in both versions it just reads as varying degrees of petty high school bullshit and it’s not like Ataru hasn’t already been publicly humiliated worse before already, but I will also admit that the joke of the sheer lengths the stormtroopers go to are very funny. On the subject, I don’t really have strong feelings about the stormtroopers themselves or really how nasty the cast as a whole is. They were sufficiently dysfunctional for me in the modern one, and the ways in which it was mitigated didn’t really bother me enough. I also think that Lum is rather conniving in all versions. Not overly so, she’s by far the most emotionally honest person in the cast, but there was never really a difference as far as I could tell. I also like the coloring and style choices for character designs more, especially for the alien characters, and the more conventional style also helps characters like Ran, who’s meant to look as cute as can be. It doesn’t help everyone, mendou looks a bit worse, but overall I think the more realistic proportions makes the violence ironically more visceral. One of the things I love about Ranma 1/2 is that even though her drawings aren’t super detailed, Takahashi has an impeccable sense of physical comedy and posing and this new one really gets to that. And lastly, I’m not super big on how slow the older show can be at times. Not that it doesn’t use its time to just spin its wheels, but I often felt that the new one was more efficient without losing too much in return. Even when jokes are done in more conventional ways in the new one, they’re still done effectively. I can take a few dramatic scenes being cut because the dramatic side of the relationships are always more an undercurrent to their comedic side in takahashi’s work. Like you outlined, some of the comedy doesn’t work as well, but what does work well combined with the style choices that I do think have a genuine leg on the original ultimately make the new show a personal favorite for me. I say this as a guy who ranks beautiful dreamer on his top 5 anime, and the new one more around his top 46.
The old series is better for other reasons too. For one thing, the art & animation are better, the colours are more vibrant & alive, even the backgrounds are rendered in lush, beautiful watercolours & acrylics (I wish I could frame them & hang them on my walls), and the layout has more depth, almost a 3d cinematic feel to it (which explains why the series & characters adapted so well to feature films & OVAs.) The character animation was also better on the original; much more vibrant, dynamic, lively and expressive; even the facial expressions were so on-point that you almost knew what the characters were thinking before they spoke, and the comic-exaggerations (when & where appropriate) were so wild and side-splittingly funny. The new version however has none of these qualities. The colours are flat & washed out & lifeless, the animation is stiff and (again) lifeless, the characters' faces are devoid of much if any expression, everything looks flat, stiff & repetitive, as though it were rendered with a set of rubber-stamps. I don't know if they were trying to cut costs or if modern artists just plain don't know how to animate like they used to back in the 1980s, or if they farmed it out to some 3rd rate studio in some other country to do the animation grunt-work or what, but the new series is, on several levels, just plain *_dull_* in comparison to the original '80s series. It's dull, flat, washed-out & bland. And they try to compensate for this by pushing everything along as such a hectic, frantic, breakneck pace that you barely have a chance to catch your breath or even have time to fully let the jokes & gags register. Lastly, although the voices of the 2 main characters are good, they still lack a good portion of charm & appeal of the original voice-actors, and the voices of the supporting characters aren't even close; some are _way_ off, in fact. I mean, admittedly, the new version has _some_ good qualities: it follows the original manga-stories more closely than the old series did, but still, that all comes at a tremendous cost in terms of the other trade-offs listed above.
This seems to be a frequent complaint about a lot of remakes. Lack of creativity in the storytelling approach. I've seen it with Sailor Moon Crystal, Rurouni Kenshin, and Urusei Yatsura.
Hi, wanted to say thanks, finally a video that isn't on the delusional side of things that new is better because of new animation, closer to the manga, or whatever BS comes up. What's worse, every argument used goes like this: -the "old" anime looks dated (especially the first season). Well, when asked what was definitely better at the same time frame (1981), they can't answer. -the "old" anime had a lot of filler, this (the new one) is closer to the manga. As if being a copy and paste of the manga was a guarantee of a good anime, and when you point out to these guys the very low rate of filler (less than 1 episode in 5) compared to other Japanese series like say, Detective Conan, Naruto, they resort to diversion tactics such as implying the level of discussion is lower than ever (sigh...) -they don't have the time to watch 100 episodes of the classic anime but they do for things like Detective Conan (1000+ episodes half of which are fillers), Naruto, and so forth... -The reboot has a better artsyle (?)... Well it's 2020s artsyle so is that really an argument in its favor? (especially considering that this artsyle isn't all close to the manga which is from 1978 remember?). To be clear: No I don't think so. If I sound harsh, that's because I feel that the justifications often used to preferring the new one are all missing the point. Anyway, enough ranting, I could go on and on. To say, I am in agreement with all of the points you set out, I've also outlined this in some forums to be downvoted because I wasn't going with the flow, you just outlined everything that is wrong with this adaptation, the pacing is so rushed it renders the characters annoying, the jokes just are flat since they cut things here and there, the general atmosphere to me is 2020s, not at all 1980s, as evidence by how much toning down has been done to the characters, so much so that I feel it is Urusei Yatsura Lite... Did we really need that? The classic show is a masterpiece of creativity, and it generally did improve upon the manga, while this thing can't even acurately be a copy of the manga it claims to be. I have often wondered what was the purpose of this reboot, but then, I remembered the Japanese practice of using anime series to drive sales of merchandise and that struck me as logical in that context. To finish, I have (rather forcefully at times) watched all 23 episodes, and they still leave a plastic feel in my taste compared to the original. So unlike most bloggers and fanbase, I don't want any Ranma or Maison Ikkoku remake. It is better at times to leave classics in the past.
OG had better comedic timing, better pacing (characters were given longer and proper introduction thus jokes just hit better) not to mention that voice acting was superb. In new one almost every single character with expressive temperament (maybe except Lum and Ataru) were butchered and made sound generic. Ram is probably the biggest downgrade: in OG her V/A would goes from calm, quiet, sweet and tender to serious, loud, furious and scary back and forth. Sometimes it's leading to situations were she spits crazy threats with her girly, cute voice or tries to keep peace while her voice is almost going off. In remake it's all gone - she sounds like a normal, typical girl and when she goes mad she just sounds like a mad teenager. In og? Sweet idiot transforming into maniacal psycho xD
i had to drop out from this anime right before ten was going to be introduced because i don't feel anything for the remake breaking neck pase and so many jokes missing a punchline or direction, events out of order for new plot convinience the remake broke my heart by not making beef ball joke and it was making me hurt watching it every further gag it has good vibes and many bad ones like i only liked 2 va's from the series and that was ataru and his mum because after knowing them for so many episodes they just sound like guest actors replacements . it would be very hadr for me to get back and watch the rest just to be ready for next season, and they is not the feeling you are looking in your hobby
The new series has a lack of comedic timing which the original excelled at. They cram way too much into these new episodes and the show suffers because of it. The teacher your referencing in the new series, is the teacher later in the original series though. He is featured in some classic episodes as well as Beautiful Dreamer.
i prefer the newer version when it comes to the beginning part to be honest. the og felt so slow and clunky in the beginning and the humor to me didn't really hit as hard and though it did add more to shinobu and ataru together, i couldn't really enjoy it as much. The og for ataru's character played more into the humor then the serious moments which also kinda made me not enjoy it as much. (although i really dont like how the newer one skipped over some moments between them like the date episode in favor of other stories like asuka)
the one episode with the rice cooker episode especially made me not like ataru even more, instead of being all sad and thinking about lum, he spends the whole time partying in some random clubs, so much so his body degrades. He was at the lowest of the low in that one for me. Only thing that made me enjoy that episode was that we already had a 'lum is gone' episode when she had to return to renew her passport so we had new scenes from the anime.
I don't even feel the love between the main two characters 😂 ataru and lum like wth is this and none of the jokes come thru In the new one sadly I just want new episodes to the original not a remake with fast pace to nothing
... the new shows urusei yatsura focuses more on the progress in the bonds between lum and ataru, that's probably the reason why the other aspects feel bland, and the changes in the new characters feel more modern, modern problems require modern solutions after all, the OG brings inspiration to the new, but don't bad mouth the remixed masterpiece.
It doesn't even do that part well in the episodes I've covered in this video. And if I feel something is bad, I can say that I think it's bad. That's called criticism
@@etheri0n959 from the point of view of someone who likes sandwiches and hates life without the fresh air to breathe, i will criticize that the way you compared the two sounded less like a comparison and more of a tunnel vision on what the new urusei yatsura had which was bland that the old one had which was better but not the other way around, a sort of bias if you will. Me personally i like to think that these are two different realities where one is hyped up to eleven and the other is a little more realistic to what would ACTUALLY happen if aliens that looked human but with powers came to do, the main moments of the manga ARE seen in both but where one was given creativity the other was given clarity where the movements feel more human, also stop reading this in a condescending tone most people do that, also good work. None of this actually matters what i am saying above, but at least add a percentage or a rating of in-between sections to better clarify an opinion, I heard all differences between both shows and knew what you meant but never quite grasped how much it affects you personally. that is all I will now let you have the last word.
I never read your words in a condescending tone. I was just responding to a sentiment that I disagreed with. And what you said about me being biased can just as easily be applied to you. The new version is more realistic? How? It doesn't do anything to change the plot points or the story in order to make the characters more grounded or anything. It's just less creative with how it frames its jokes and punchlines. I feel like this is kind of grasping at straws to justify you liking the new version better, but if you like the new one more that's fine and you don't have to justify that. P.S. This comment seemed a lot more condescending than the first where the only real problem I had with it was the implication that you're not allowed to criticize something you don't like. But if you didn't mean it that's fine. Just wanted to let you know in case you're genuinely wondering why your comments are taken as condescending
Now I gotta press x to doubt on your response to my comment. How am I supposed to take your tone in any other way? Love how you responded to my comment BTW, by not actually responding to any of my arguments. Shows that you really were just pulling any reason out of your ass to justify your stance on the show. Also what happened to letting me get the last word lmao, guess that was a lie cuz you were just too insecure to leave what you said at that after I responded again.
EXACTLY, the old one’s so good!
Absolutely love that the show came back for people who haven't watched it but honestly the original show was infinitely better
Sadly but true the original has more heart and funnier moments sad to say the new one is paced to fast and we don't get no side character moments
@@candypietravels its kind of made me go from wanting a ranma reboot to not having one at all if it's going to be sped through
I can’t for the life of me find a way to watch the original, otherwise I would

I really like the new version for what it is. When it was first announced last year, I expected to hate it because the original happens to be my favorite anime series of all time, especially as the og story/animation kept getting better as the series progressed. It was okay, I still prefer the original, but everyone are free to like what they want!
New version comes closer to what it was in the original manga. This version pretty much removes making the mob characters themselves as they never were in the original manga.
I don't really value accuracy to the manga because being accurate to the manga doesn't mean that the anime is quality stuff.
I love both adaptations, although the original will always have a special place in my heart.
Design-wise Megane in particular looks like a mob character.
yep his friends do feel like they're just background characters in the new one
In the original manga Megane was just a mob character a was never given a name.
Besides Kosuke aka Perm all of Ataru's friends pretty much stop existing after 30 or so chapters.
They don’t even tell you there names in the new one their basically background characters in the new one
I do agree that old is better, but I still absolutely adore the new one :D
To be honest, I like both versions.
I really like that Lum’s depiction feels more accurate to the manga and I really like that
THE TRYING TO ELECT HIM AS CLASS PRESIDENT THING WAS A WHOLE THING IN THE MANGA
So was Otoko….
New voice actors are doing great job with the characters they are given. But Toshio Furukawa and Fumi Hirano will always be Ataru and Lum to me.
Also the original has the really interesting films as well especially that second one Beautiful Dreamer
YES!!!
It was never a question as far as I'm concerned, new is fun, old is best.
I've watched both and I truly enjoyed both versions, both have charm and are truly entertaining. It's just people's preferences. Doesn't really bother me this is just like how most folks prefer DBZ than DBZ Kai.
as a fan of the og i have the same opinion as u i think the new one is fine but something feels like its missing and it needs some spice
This is interesting take because I’m still early in the original series as well and I absolutely Love it, so that means it gets even better. 😊
I like them both! They have their own charm, and that’s pretty interesting to me!
As a big fan of the original, I would say the new series is pretty good, but it's like reading an abridged version of a book. So it's missing chunks of narrative development the original had with longer episode counts for the story arcs.
I miss those Megane and Company even though they are not cannon they are just great.
I love both versions!
wow, this video put me to tears. i totally forgot about how they chose to portray lum as a literal INVADER. its been a few years since ive seen the original and i have been really enjoying the remake. i definitely feel a difference but it was hard to put into words. i do still feel like the remake has ALOT of effort put into it, but thats mostly because every other remake feels heartless in comparison. i am also very happy with all the new merch that has been released and i hope we get more!
keep in mind, though both being based on the manga. the new urusei yatsura, is alot more aligned with the manga. Mamoru Oshii(yes that mamoru oshii) really put his stamp on the character and the humor during his tenor on the show, which is like 100 episodes or so plus the first couple of films.
That is true. One of the best of movies is beautiful dreamer which just takes the idea in one chapter and pretty much makes up a whole new story.
Not entirely true. If you read the mana you see lots of characters characterized as very funny. It not all thansk to Oshii
Automatically agreed with the title and liked
The creative liberty made the original Adaption so God like.
The comparison with how The Simpsons changed, so much it birthed the term "Flanderization", to this show is just so spot on.
i think the only thing that's missing on the reboot version is the exaggerated expressions. it kinda feels like the director want to play it safe rather than letting the animators do whatever they want to make the animation feels more like animation.
People keep making the mistakes of thinking that since the new is more close to the manga, allegedly, it means all the characterization in the old one was thanks to Oshii
they "should" be seen as two "different" animes, new version adopted a more romantic approce while older decisely have a focus on folklore comedia
Going from that into watching something like the 2022 anime is a refreshing feeling of "Hey remember when this was all this series was?"
It feels like a much lighter and simple series.
The animation in the original show is beautiful and has a lot of charm.
Based. I didn't realize there was a whole level of irony missing because the townsfolk were toned down! I'll have to watch the original now!
Today 2024 after the show’s completion i find the original is vastly more interesting and more satisfying. The new adaptation does fall short and it does feel watered down.
For a channel with just 2k subs ur editing was awesome keep it up 👍
I disagree with most of this.
After 15 years this song still never gets boring.
The modern animation is far superior to the 80s anime
The original is better in literally every other way
I prefer the look of the original Urusei Yatsura anime.
Would you ever do a review of the original Urusei Yatsura movie's that would make a great video to see because nobody has never done it before 🤔
Btw, the remake of Ranma is coming soon , i will be curious how that remake ends up. Definitely make a video about that one
In the new one, you didn’t like Ataru doing the shadow clone out of nowhere 😂😂😂
Rumiko takahashi born October 10, 1957. Her Zodiac sign is Libra(the second decan of Aquarius ♒). Ruled by Planet Venus and sub-ruled by both planet Saturn and Uranus.
Will you be part 3 of Urusei Yatsura original vs New
I may. Haven't found anything to comment on as of now though.
@@etheri0n959 oh what about the original Urusei Yatsura voice actor's vs the new voice actor's that could be a good one
Yeah, I could talk about it, but I don't know if that's enough for one whole video for me.
@@etheri0n959 true but fan's would love to see it
Yeah of course
Thank you for this video. You described it perfectly
People forget that Rumiko's original story wasn't all that… good…
Drawing everyone else blue to create contrast is r4yc1st?... Americans sure have such a warped mindset...
Never heard of a joke? You sure have a warped mindset...
New is good but old is best as the old saying goes.
I hope they remake the episode “Full of Sunshine - Full of Amours” in this 2022 version
Megan and Lum's stormtroopers are great because the reason they hate Ataru so much is why many in the audience hate Ataru. He got a beautiful alien waifu and... he doesn't even want her! Whats worse is she doesn't want anyone but him! This pisses them off so much lol
Thanks for making this. The OG series is genuinely my favorite anime of all time. I hate seeing how they butchered it
As an Urusei Yatsura scholar I disagree heavily with this video, I see where you're coming from but personally I found a lot of the characters in the 70s version way too cartoonishly one note and the story itself got lost in the majority of it's episodes being filler. This did lead to some great anime original episodes but I am very happy with this updated, more accurate interpretation of the manga that still keeps the heart of the series
me and my husband love them both of course Mendo had a lot of Nazi like images.
example when Mendo and Lum’s mothers fought each other in the original series
and someone referred to the Mendo conglomerates Panzer division.
my husband is grew up in the early 90s and watched this series at Misawa AFB as a little boy
i was born in the 90s so i watched this series later and love the original.
the music of the original was great and it’s what is missing in the new one.
especially Lum’s love song which was played once in a while when it was very prevalent in the original.
I hate the new smooth animation. The older and more jagged and rough animation just has so much more charm, like humans animated it instead of a computer.
I think both have their value
Onsen Mark existed in the original too
Personally I enjoy the new anime a lot, but yeah it’s very much not directed by mamoru oshii.
What's worse, every argument used goes like this:
-the "old" anime looks dated (especially the first season). Well, when asked what was definitely better at the same time frame (1981), they can't answer.
-the "old" anime had a lot of filler, this (the new one) is closer to the manga. As if being a copy and paste of the manga was a guarantee of a good anime, and when you point out to these guys the very low rate of filler (less than 1 episode in 5) compared to other Japanese series like say, Detective Conan, Naruto, they resort to diversion tactics such as implying the level of discussion is lower than ever (sigh...)
-they don't have the time to watch 100 episodes of the classic anime but they do for things like Detective Conan (1000+ episodes half of which are fillers), Naruto, and so forth...
I like the original color scheme better
I can't even tell if OG UY has filler. They're really good episodes maybe a few I didn't love but they're not bad I just didn't enjoy them
OG had better comedic timing, better pacing (characters were given longer and proper introduction thus jokes just hit better) not to mention that voice acting was superb.
I like the new one cause I can actually find it.
i had to drop out from this anime right before ten was going to be introduced because i don't feel anything for the remake
breaking neck pase and so many jokes missing a punchline or direction, events out of order for new plot convinience
the remake broke my heart by not making beef ball joke and it was making me hurt watching it every further gag
it has good vibes and many bad ones like i only liked 2 va's from the series and that was ataru and his mum because after knowing them for so many episodes they just sound like guest actors replacements . it would be very hadr for me to get back and watch the rest just to be ready for next season, and they is not the feeling you are looking in your hobby
deserves more views
The 2010's ovas are even better besides the fart jokes.
... the new shows urusei yatsura focuses more on the progress in the bonds between lum and ataru, that's probably the reason why the other aspects feel bland, and the changes in the new characters feel more modern, modern problems require modern solutions after all, the OG brings inspiration to the new, but don't bad mouth the remixed masterpiece.
@@etheri0n959 press X to doubt, you didn't have to spell condescending three times bro.
Only thing i liked in new adaptation more than old one was Daaarliiiing ya i didn't found it cringe but liked daaarliiiing more cute than just darling
This anime is rather logical than emotional.
Sad urusei yatsura😢❤
The original is always the best..... 👍🏻
Согласен что старая версия "Несносных Пришельцев" была явно лучше!
