    My ranking would be: 2, 5, 1, 4, 3, 6
When movie #4 was being made, the crew already knew that the TV series was going to end. With that in mind, Kazuo Yamazaki said that the main message he wanted to tell with this film was "to move on" (especially for the Lum-obssessed fans), but since the manga was still being published at the time, he couldn't give an actual ending to the franchise.
In an interview, he said that he bought a ticket to watch the film on the day it came out. When he was leaving the theather, he saw a couple of 10 year-old kids looking very confused and disappointed. Once they were outside, one of them spat on the ground and kicked it. Yamazaki said that's were he knew that he messed up.
In my opinion, the first 2/3 of this film gives "Beautiful Dreamer" a run for his money, but fails to wrap the plot in a way that makes sense in the end.

Mendou’s plan is to force the town to wish for things to go back to normal and to destroy th me frozen dreams in the crossfire. Anyone who breathes in the fog has their dream turned into reality, which is why Ataru’s wish to get Lum back is what works. I feel the war storyline is fine but it feels thrown in like it was a half complete script. Even in universe it feels convuluted.

@@harizotoh7 I've read an "essay" on the 4th film made by a Rumiko Takahashi fan site (Furinkan), it helps to make a little more sense of the movie. Someday I'll rewatch that movie alongside the essay to see if I finally get it 😅.

    • @harizotoh7
      @harizotoh7 7 месяцев назад +2

Oh the essay is a confused mess and It makes the film more complicated than it really is. It is trying to be a bit mysterious but the script of the film is a bit messy. The big mistake is to think the film is complicated versus just not told well. It is the story of a X-files like horror story playing out of a 300 year old legend repeating and a supernatural being being birthed and growing. Major important details are said as matter of face asides rather than given detail. Like Mendo says the Oni legend was real and happened 300 years ago. Or Ataru saying the war will make everyone wish for the town to return to normal and destroy the frozen dreamscapes. And the scene with the grandpa is cut only because he said to check under the tree to see the end of the Oni princess legend. That is why Ataru flips out and rushes back because he now knows Lum is in danger.@@paulo143PE

Beautiful Dreamer is a film of it's own and nothing can't compare to the true beauty of it. I know a lot of people love his adaptation of Ghost in the Shell or Angel's egg, but Beautiful Dreamer in my opinion is his best feature to day.

Still think Only You is better
Beautiful Dreamer really suffered from pacing issues (especially the climax) and they have to give the Rip Van Wrinkle(Taro) speech like twenty times. One time would’ve been fine

My personal ranking (in terms of my favourites) would be: 2, 3, 5, 1, 6, 4. 2 is, to me, the most interesting one that is still emotionall-satisfying; 3 and 5 are the most touching & emotionally-satisfying (parts of them still make me cry-I'll leave you to guess which parts.) 1 & 6 are fun, though don't have the same depth or emotional punch of the previous ones. The only reason I'd rank 4 last is because, while parts of it are undeniably, hauntingly-beautiful in & of themselves, the film as a whole is so baffling as to leave me unsatisfied on an emotional level; it just didn't quite have the emotional payoff one would've hoped.

I will defend Remember my love for having fantastic animation, and some great sequences, and an amazing first act. It is quite serious and feels like a horror movie at times and I wish they had kept this up. The reveal that the antagonist is just some dumbass kid and he doesn't have a plan per se, is pretty annoying. The setup was so good! The extended sequence of Lum's "Space Friends" (my least favorite characters) trying to solve the mystery really lost me.
Lum the Forever is BRILLIANT and it strangely misses a key scene where Mendo and Ataru visit Mendo's grandfather who fill in more about the legend of the tree which is in the script but not in the final film. The Mendo family legend about the tree that makes it to the student film is 100% factual, and this is key to remember. Grandfather explains that the original Oni Princess was drawn to the tree, where it sapped her power until she died. This is what causes Ataru to freak out and rush home to get Lum. The being at the heart of the tree is a consciousness that laid dormant until the tree was cut, and it passively absorbs the feelings and memories of the town. Mendo figures this out which is why he launches his hare-brained scheme to start a war to make the town want things back to how they were. This causes the tree being to release Lum saying it has enough memories to play with. So despite the somewhat muddled execution of the plot, it's visually stunning and the closest the series gets to a proper serious horror film.

That clears up so many questions I had. LOL! But I also really enjoyed the 4th movie too as a meta commentary on its popularity that can't last forever.

    • @harizotoh7
      @harizotoh7 10 месяцев назад

They should have made it more clear that the events from the past are replaying, with Lum filling the role of both the village elder and the Oni Princess. And it appears that this is just the life cycle of the being which passively absorbs the memories of those around it - likely why it saps and is drawn to the most popuplar figure in the city. Tree is cut, spirits released, it absorbs an oni princess, the tree rebuilds. Now where this being came from is anyone's guess - it's just some lovecraftian style Old One or something. @@michaelyakiwchuk43

When you mentioned a bonus movie at the beginning, I thought you meant movie 6. What a pleasant surprise to mention this 2020 live action movie. I've never heard of this one before and I'll definitely watch it, so thanks for mentioning it!
    My ranking would be: 2, 1, 3/4, 5, 6
I'm a fan of UY since the late 80s when I first saw the TV series on french TV. In the mid nineties I collected the british releases of the movies on VHS, japanese with subtitles.
While I have a soft spot for Only you, I definitely consider movie 2 the best of the bunch. In my opinion, it's one of the very best anime of all time.
Remember my love on the other hand was an ok movie. It had a killer opening, some eerie scenes and I particularly like the cute & polished character designs in that one. I think it was a showcase piece for chief animator director Yûji Moriyama. The chase scene in the middle of the movie with Lum is greatly animated.
Lum the forever was a wierd one when I saw it for the first time. I love some of it's moody/eerie scenes and the opening and endings are fantastic, but the plot is confusing as hell. I think it was kind of ambitious with that big baby at the end, the clown parade (reminds me of Fellini movies btw) .... I like it. I'd put it in B tier.
Movie 5, the final chapter, is the one I probably like the least from the first five movies because it's basically an adaption of Takahashi's manga, and I prefer the anime over the manga in general (vor various reasons). The emotional ending however is absolutely great, so in the end I still like the movie (and the ending pop song rocks!).
Movie 6 is..... nah, let's not talk about movie 6. It's definitely the weakest of all 6 movies. All characters have lost depth and are reduced to their basic comedy traits, almost like when they were first introduced in the TV series, especially Ataru, who has been reduced to a lecherous moron.

I first watched movies 1/2 a couple of years ago and then watched all of the remaining films last year to see if I wanted to buy the blu-rays for the films. I ended up just getting the blu-rays for movies 1/2, which was good since the blu-ray for Beautiful Dreamer went out of print recently.
I’d rate the films: 2, 1, 5, 3, and finally 6. I’d have to rewatch 4 because it blew my mind too much.😵‍💫 I can’t believe someone made a film more surreal than Mamoru Oshii.
Looking forward to getting season 1 this April from Discotek.

The story for 4 is that the events from 300 years ago repeat again. Killing the tree releases the spirits from the people which coalesces at the base of the tree. It drains Lum’s power to birth itself and it becomes the big baby (2001 Starchild influence). Since it feels all the emotions of everyone in town it becomes the biggest Lum fanatic and wants her to itself. When its fog is breathed in they commune with turtle spirit and it creates their dream in reality frozen at the moment they awaken. Me do figures this out so he creates a war to destroy the dreams in the crossfire and to force everyone to wish things were like they were before. It causes damage but isn’t the key. It is Ataru who himself breathes in the fog and wishes for Lum back that causes the spirit to relinquish Lum.

    My ranking of the movies is 4, 2, 1, 5, 3, 6.
In the end, that movie may not have been the death knell of the Urusei Yatsura TV series, but it may have been the impetus for why Viz decided to dub Ranma 1/2 for the US audience instead of Urusei Yatsura.

Having binged on the OG DVD boxed set over the last couple months, I naturally have my own opinions on these movies, and I'm curious how they stack up against yours. My ranking from best to worst would be 5, 2, 3, 6, 1, 4 .
Only You: Honestly, I'd mark this as one of the worse movies, largely due to the fact that the first half of the movie relies very heavily on Ataru being a stupid horny asshole. Yeah, those are his character flaws, but this movie makes such heavy use of them you really find it hard to root for him. It does have a solid enough ending, and the quality is decent, but the overreliance on asshole Ataru just marks this down for me.
Beautiful Dreamer: I'm not a big fan of shilling movies for their "meta-commentary". I care about what's actually presented to me in the movie. Fortunately, the 2nd movie has a rock-solid foundation to lay its more metaphorical constructions on. The internal logic is solid and sound (as much as that can apply to a literal dream-world), and Mujaki clearly explains who he is and why he's doing what he's doing, so it's easy to understand the movie right from the get-go, once the big reveal is done. Definitely one of the best movies.
Remember My Love: I have to consider this one of the better movies. We don't make much use of Ataru's asshole side, the plot is remarkably coherent for a time travel story, and there's some legitimately sweet and bittersweet moments in there, which is always great. I will admit the fairy/dino/seagull lovers sequence is a bit out-there, but I immediately grasped it was trying to showcase how Lum's will to be with Ataru is stronger than the causality-bending curse, so I have fewer problems with it than some.
Lum the Forever: This is hands down my immediate nomination for the worst UY movie of them all, period. You can tell there was a really critical info-dump scene involving Mendo's granddad cut, because so much of the latter half of the movie makes no sense without having seen it - we don't know why they're recovering Tarozakura's remains, we don't know why there's a dead girl in the roots, we don't know why Shutaro believes sacrificing Tobimaru will end the sakura spirit's curse, we don't know why it fixated on Lum... This is just a shoddy knock-off version of Beautiful Dreamer, with no attempt to actually give us any payoff for the mystery it builds up!
The Final Chapter: This is an adaptation of the manga's well-crafted finale, so of course this is my pick for the best movie of them all. It does have its flaws from inheriting said storyline, such as Rupa and Carla's relationship being really messed up, but it does romantic drama and open-ended yet optimistic so well I don't even care. Seriously, Ranma 1/2's ending is a pale imitation of UY's, in my opinion.
Always My Darling: This movie suffers for coming out after The Final Chapter, so another non-serial throw-away storyline is just inherently kind of a let-down. The story itself is a competent little action-comedy romp, with a few well-done emotional bits, but nothing really spectacular. It is also undermined by Lupica and Rio's relationship being even more stupid than Rupa and Carla's, which is saying something for UY.

The skeleton at the base of the tree is the Oni princess from the legend 300 years ago. Last time the his happened the only way it was stopped was through her sacrifice to pull it to sleep. The process killed her and the same was going to happen to Lum.
