When I knew they would remake it the first thing I thought was that if the soundtrack wasn't the same it wouldn't be good. Nothing can top that soundtrack. It is one of the best things I have ever heard
It's crazy how the original is more animated that the new one. There's so many more dynamic movement in the original, compared to the new one where there are a lot of still or panning shots with only a character's mouth moving. It feels similar to how the Shaman King remake isn't much of an animation improvement from the original
OK I haven't got to watch the new one fully yet just some clips but unless I'm being fooled the new looks way more animated. I saw a comparison of the fight with Jine and the new is way more faced paced and vibrant.
@zoyx22 that's a staple of 90's animation. The new version lacks soul and character. It's like a cheap knock off that looks better initially, but turns out to be far inferior after some scrutiny
That's the trend of modern anime. Detailed still pictures, less subtle motions. They go all out in fight scenes for animation and visual effects though.
Anime industry nowadays is in shambles. There is loss of talent and the producers take most of the profit not paying enough to artists and directors while giving them strict deadlines.
Great analysis. The biggest difference between the 90s and 2023 adaptations can be boiled down to the 90s original actually taking advantage of strengths of being an animated adaptation with its use of color, composition, OSTs/sound effects, and rewriting minor plot threads to improve pacing (i.e. removing the old man betrayal is the right call in the anime because whereas it's quick to convey within a few panels/pages in print, it would take precious minutes of expository dialogue and animated scenes that are better used elsewhere). This growingly popular mindset that "closer to the manga = intrinsically better" needs to die.
As someone who has never watched the original I’m really friggin enjoying this series so far! It actually makes me want to go watch the og so I don’t have to wait week after week
For all the filler the original had, it was very faithful to the manga in many ways. One of the biggest changes early on was removing the old guy who betrays Kaoru and that'sreally it. A lot of the little things you pointed out was present in the manga. Likewise, the remake is both more faithful to the manga plot wise but also less faithful in heart. Most of the goofy moments have been removed and Kaoru's more explosive personality has been all but removed to make her a more agreeable female protagonist which doesn't really do her character justice. Overall I think the remake is just trying to be more grounded and realistic for some reason. Something that I don't think it needs to be. The additional historical context they added is very appreciated, though.
Just making me think about an encounter on a FMA03 reanimated post on r/anime where some guy was claiming that all old anime should be remade due to animation. Just completely disregarding directing and all this stuff. Seeing these actual remakes then just makes those types of remarks so much more infuriating. (The actual post was just op practicing some animation at emulating industry standard styling as the adjusted the aspect ratio)
it was the music and direction of the 1996 anime that really floored me. it has so much energy and emotion. the scene when Koaru realizes Kenshin had already left. the direction and music made the scene incredibly sad.
1996 anime is so much better, it actually has benevolence and purpose. Idc if the new one is more “faithful” panel by panel. The OG has soul, the new one is just content. Kenshin is like a emotionless boy here, not a passionate man. What they’ve done to the women also is abysmal. RIP Kaoru’s spirit, RIP Megumi’s foxiness. If making it more exact to the manga downgrades it this much, what’s the point. It is So boring.
well as a manga reader, I enjoyed the new adaption they follow the manga story and didn't cut any of the characters (so far) but the old one will always be iconic.
One of the funny parts when he thinks she's going to kill himself so runs in the bathroom to save her is gone. That part is relevant because to the end when he says he's willing to stay, he says he might accidentally see her in the bath again and she's like, "that's okay, because if you ever do..." and she socks him dead in the face thinking he would easily evade the punch.
one thing we forget to keep in mind is that anime viewers have changed. back when i was a kid anime used to be show dont tell. so much detailed went into making scene emotional and you have to pay close attention to understand those subtle details, but times have changed, people have changed you need a more direct approach and this new version is delivering that. I will always treasure the original run but i appreciate the new one as well as i understand is targeted for the new public.
I never read the manga. So I decided to read the chapters after watching the first episode out of pure curiosity and I found that the original adaptation changed a lot. Not to say they are all bad, I can't really argue with the more exaggerated expressions and actions of the characters making things more lively but the show gets points for me for trying to play it faithful.
As I have recently found out this is a strict adaptation of the Original Manga. So to anyone who has seen the original anime, the two girls and the old doctor have been cut since those were Anime original characters. Although I am a fan of the Original Anime seeing a faithful adaptation of the series gives me excitement since I only ever watched the OG anime and not read the Manga.
@@etheri0n959right here the timestamp you note shows how little you understand about adaptation and that realistically no one should listen to a word from you. "An adaptation should be good on its own merits" is true at a sub atomic level but there are hundreds of levels of adaptations. Coeurls, Displacer Beasts, and Xenomorphs all share that they were based on an alien from the short story Black Destroyer. The first two are near 1:1 copies while a Xenomorph is certainly not a cat like monster with tentacles for whiskers. There is really not a definite answer to a good adaptation because it's up to interpretation especially when adapting literature to film. Anime based on manga has a slight advantage here because it's literature normally has clear depictions of the original authors vision. An unfaithful recreation like the OG series isn't bad because it added in about 30 episodes worth of filler, and the new isn't bad because it didn't tick all of your hyper specific boxes of your own interpretation of the story. If you can't even figure that out then please just stop, whining entitled content and pretentious comments like this one have no place in a reviewers space. You're allowed to not like a thing, but don't act like some definitive end all be all who can respond to actual criticism with a timestamp... Especially when that timestamp is full of spite and vitriol.
Interesting video! The 2023 version is alot more manga accurate both tone wise & the way the characters are portrayed. The 90s version takes liberties by making it more goofy & very heartwarming at the same time. I personally love both for different reasons. Afterall I am a big fan of the live action films too which take alot more liberties. Trust & betrayel ova still takes top spot though.
Perfectly understandable. I'm glad that manga readers have another adaptation that they can enjoy. Hopefully I can enjoy the new one too after a bit. Thanks for the comment.
Couldn’t agree more. Idk if it’s the eyes or the small faces almost all characters have, it just doesn’t feel right when compared to the original. And the music is nothing to write home about either. But love for this anime means I will be watching every single episode of this new adaptation anyways.
I love seeing different opinions on this show. Kenshin helped me through a lot as a teen (loved the manga to death), and I enjoyed the anime, so I was really excited about the remake. I'm enjoying it, but I do agree that it feels a bit like it's going through the motions (mind you, I've just started ep 3, so it could still surprise me) and might be lacking that "spark". I do like the coloring with the new one so far, and how clear the art is, but the characters keep feeling a little...off to me. It's been years since I've read the manga, though, so I could be totally wrong, but I feel like the characters in the manga were a bit sillier. I'd love to see a bit more comedy mixed with the darkness in the new adaptation. I REALLY want to see the fight with Saito, because that's my all-time favorite fight in the og anime. Anyway: good and bad with both, and I love them for different reasons, just like the live action version.
Most of old anime have the dynamic & soul. I only read Yu Yu Hakusho when I was a kid & watching it during covid and wow what a performance. It really blew my mind that such an old animation have a captivating charm & dynamic movement. I have to agree that Rurouni Kenshin 2023 is somewhat bland. Really hope that the show will pick up the pace as Rurouni Kenshin is my childhood. Plus I prefer OP1 Sobakasu then the new OP.
Recency bias. There are lots of trash old anime. Imo the ratio between good and bad hasn't really changed throughout the years. If anything, considering the ratio is about the same, we have more good new anime per year than during the the 90s/00s because so much more anime is made per year today.
I don't think you know what recency bias is. And your logic of there's more good anime today because there's just so much more stuff being made today doesn't make any sense. Because there's so much more stuff being made today, it's much more likely that there'll be duds without the proper budget, that will have lots of scheduling issues, have recycled premises that we've seen time and time again without much originality, and are only being made on the off chance that it'll be profitable. A mentality of just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks isn't really that great for making quality stuff. There are definitely bangers that have come out recently, but counting all of the shit isekai and lazy adaptations that have come out, I don't think you can really say anime is overall better in terms of quality now than it was during the 90s or early 2000s. Also none of this really has anything to do with the new rurouni kenshin's quality since trends, or what we think the trends are, aren't related to that at all.
@@etheri0n959 Your are right, I realized that recency bias, applies to me rather than the person I reply to lol. (Projection much?) I flubbed my wording. Rather than recency bias, I should've said "survivorship bias" Do you think those issues you mentioned don't apply to old anime? From time immemorial scheduling and budgeting issues has always been around. There are tons of shit anime made in the past, we just don't talk about them anymore. That's why old anime seems "better", because we only remember the good ones. Most Anime an advertisement vehicle for existing manga (and light novels / toys) after all, so the sponsors will always worry about ROI. It's extremely rare that we get a show where the sponsor says "do whatever you need to make it good" FWIW, I have been watching anime since the original Kenshin was released. Even in the OG kenshin days, customers have to pick and choose what to watch, and that hasn't really changed. Also, this is only my anecdotal opinion: These past couple years we have had so many good anime released, and I honestly don't remember any year before 2020-2023 where we have anywhere close to the QUANTITY of good shows released. Granted every season we also get a fair share of shit anime! my 2c only ofc :)
I didn't say that for sure wasn't the case for old anime, I just wanted to show you that you're logic of, "there's so much more anime being made now, therefore, it's more likely that there will be good anime, was deeply flawed as it can just as easily be used to support the opposite opinion. Unless we actually sit down and get the exact statistics on the ratio of good to bad in both old anime and modern anime, there's no way we can really say which is worse or better overall. And even if we did that, that would heavily rely on people's opinions on what anime even qualify as good or bad. And then we'd have to have a discussion about what anime even count as modern or old. There's just so much room for error on the matter that there's no real way to actually determine which era of anime was better. Also, just because those issues I mentioned existed back in the day as well doesn't mean it was just as bad. Part of the point of my comment was to say how the increase in anime now has worsened this problem significantly.
Yes you're right. It's just my opinion. I've watched a lot of anime over the years. From my observation only, it feels like the ratio of good to bad is roughly the same throughout the years. My definition of good or bad is just the consensus between my friend group and the internet of course and as you said that's by no means accurate! There are a lot of amazing anime created in these past few years, it seems like we have no shortage of good shows to be watched. During the OG Kenshin era I feel like we get maybe one good show every season. OG Kenshin also nosedived quite hard post-Sishio arc. @@etheri0n959
I don’t think the new one is bad but it could use work. The 2nd episode is a lot better in my opinion, they gave the characters a lot more personality than the 1st episode, I know it’ll be good, it just needs a few more episodes to be fleshed out.
I watched 5th episode and one of my friend sent me this video if I agree or not. 100% I agree. I tought I was a bit cruel for new adaptation but after watching now sure of it. I miss old soundtracks, comedy, emotions but not because I love old one. Its because there is no sign in new one about emotion.
The new one SKIPS A LOT though, i mean the episode with Sanosuke and the paintings on episode 18 of the new show, isn't until episode 28 of the old one. In this new one, they skip ENTIRE fights, encounters and even characters from the original. Where are the two little girls Ayame and Suzume that call Kenshin "Uncle kenny"? Where's Doctor Gensai? These characters were introduced within the first 20 episodes of the original, but they are nowhere to be found in this new one. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE seeing Samurai X come back into the spotlight and get a whole new look and upgraded visuals, but personally, i would have rather just seen a 1 for 1 REMAKE of the original made with modern animation, sound and visuals. I remember watching the original on TV along with shows like Inuyasha (which is another anime i would LOVE to see updated). And on another note.....WTF is this new opening music?! The original was SOOOOO much better!
Excellent video, I loved your ability to explain what makes the original first episode great, without even having seen anything past that. Do you plan to continue watching it? Original or remake?
I plan on watching both still. I want to see if the new one improves or not and the original hooked me so I'm staying on board for a long time with that one.
@@etheri0n959 the original show is the greatest anime ever, in my opinion. I’d recommend at the very least sticking with it. The Kyoto arc is the most brilliant arc in shonen
First and foremost, from a contextual point, why would Kaoru just welcome a guy she just met, Kenshin is just there to stop by , learned about Kaoru and her dojo, and what the dojo stands for, that said, Kenshin believes her father would want costing her life just for reputation of the dojo, which is why he can't just feel at home, while someone's out there trying to use the name Battousai and disdaining Kamiya dojo, so he went out there to stop Gohei, and that oldman Kihei, is more important than just for plot twist, because Kaoru knew Kihei even before Kenshin, but then Kihei betrayed her, and he is the one connected to Gohei's group, after Kenshin went to their hideout and investigate , which is why he went back to Kamiya Dojo to help Kaoru after learning the connection, unlike the 90s anime, he came back to the dojo, because they need to happen. the context and story of the remake made more sense than the "relationship build up" of the 90s version. Kenshin WASN'T EXACTLY in town to settle down, he's a wanderer but then heard someone using the name battousai
First and foremost, everyone seems to be forgetting that kaoru did in fact offer kenshin to stay with her after just meeting him. After saving him from the police she literally asks him if he wants to stay at her dojo. So yes, even though they just met, she offered him a stay at her dojo. Secondly, even if that wasn't the case, the whole point of this episode is making the relationship of kaoru and kenshin feel natural and organic which the new version clearly doesn't even in the eyes of people who like this remake given how often people use this argument. Also there IS a reason for kaoru to welcome kenshin, you know, because, he kinda saved her life? It's not enough for her to want him to stay forever, but as a way of repaying him, it works. And yes, it does make sense for kenshin to stay in town during the first episode if the original. Even ignoring the fact that both versions of kenshin say they're tired of wandering as soon as they close the door, in the 90s, kenshin knows that someone is using his name to kill people from the beginning. So his reason for staying in town is the same as his reason in the remake. And him choosing to stay at kaoru's dojo for the time being was also because the killer was heavily related to kaoru's dojo. But even if this all wasn't the case, I have to stress the importance of the fact that kaoru and kenshin's relationship is supposed to be the central hook of the first episode and choosing not to focus on that is terrible from a narrative perspective, which is why the remake fails for me.
Though I'm extremely thankful for the remake but the OG is clearly the superior one. The OG emphasizes more on character and the values of life which we can learnt about. The battle music was inferior too. Though I'll still finish the new series without hesitation.
The OG adds characters, story and scenes that weren’t in the source material which is the manga , the new one is more faithful to the manga . i think what you have is called nostalgia and probably you never read the manga
@@symphonixblades nostalgia isn't a factor. The OG is just flat out better in being an animated film. There's no problem in adding stuff if it helps for immersing the audience. If K-On adapted the manga faithfully, it will never be as iconic.
Kinda feels like the new anime wants to rush through the Tokyo portion of the story. It needs to be a slow burn so when it’s time to move on to Shishio arc, we miss the simpler times. Just my 2 cents
I feel the exact same way. That’s why I think filler is actually important in the original, we get more out of the characters before everything is turned on it’s head.
Review seem to miss the point that there's a market for a version that's more faithful to the manga. The original anime made changes to make things warmer and yes those are going to be missing. The changes made to the original source material the first time through made sense to a certain point to launch a new series. (Marketing marketing marketing!) This project is quite intentionally different. Kaoru is a different personality in the manga (more passive) and Kenshin is not the over the top goofball. I get preferring the alterations the first anime made, but I'm happy to see the manga itself animated.
And I don't see a problem with you enjoying the new anime. The whole point of this video was just to talk about the things I preferred in the original anime. I didn't miss the point of a new adaptation, I just wanted to make a video on my opinion. It's completely fine if you enjoyed it.
@@etheri0n959personally its the opposite for me , i like the new one because the characters personality is more faithful to the manga . If you also watch Rurouni Kenshin live action you will notice that Kenshin is not goofy at all and even that one took some liberties as well , but kept most characters personality what they should be
@@symphonixblades The goofiness is a great way for kenshin to mask his err... reputation and it also makes a great contrast when kenshin does get serious.
Well said, wholeheartedly agree with everything. It's really sad how the remake is just so sterile and "clean" in the worst way possible, simply soulless. Great video, concise, well articulated points, etc.
I like the remake, really excited. Just a tad sad some of the silliness was lost and whqt you say, all that, happened to me. I never skipped the old series, nor even on rewatch, the new one on the other hand. Skipped almost half ep a few times
is it only me but the background music of the new ruroken is still the same but more upgraded but i know its the same. the newer version is following the manga right? if so, that makes me happy
"B-but the new one is more faithful to the manga!" 🙄 I mean don't get me wrong, I'm loving the new adaptation but that argument lacks so much subsance and yet so many people use it
Yeah. Thanks for being understanding of another's opinion even if it's different from your own. Really glad to know that there are open minded people in the community.
Ive watched all of them. The OG and the remake. To be honest, I think the OG is more entertaining than the remake one. Dont get me wrong, i like them both and i look forward to watch all of the remake episodes
1:20 I loved how the original handled this scene, we already knew (sort of) that Kenshin was the legendary Battosai cus it was kinda obvious from the intro monologue, but by showing how Kenshin acts like a fool on the outside but lives like a badass is such an awesome subtlety that really fleshed out his character that the 2023 remake really missed out on Edit: Also the back story on Gohei (massive jobber bad guy) felt much more connected in the 1996 anime than the remake, the fact that he was a former student was such a good motive that pushed him to attack the dojo. Since the remake missed out on it and went with how the manga did (not saying the manga is bad), it felt like there wasn't really an incentive for Kihei to take over the dojo, if they added in Gohei's back story it would've connected plot points up so much better.
The new adaptation is more based on the manga than anything else. In the manga during the first interaction with Kaoru, he does backflip into a support beam and does have to catch his sword with the sheath. Just track down and read the manga. Also, the original had cut so many characters like Hiruma Kihei and a slew of others.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the original version showed Kenshin crushing the bad guys hand preventing him from using a sword ever again. But the new version doesn't have that, which suggests that they probably intend for him to come back using his sword. I think the new version's pilot was so bad.
@@Ironclad17 I know that but in the original when he appeared, he hired Sanosuke to kill Kenshin because he couldn't do it himself. You missed the point I was trying to make I see
I was going to, but ultimately decided that it wasn't vital to the final cut. I liked that scene as a kind of karmic justice and cathartic way to finish him off in this episode, dealing with him in the same way kaoru's father did, only this time doing worse damage.
@@etheri0n959 same. I think it has some significance because it means they intend to switch up the way Kenshin meets Sanosuke. Also the way it was done originally really showed a very bitter man trying to gain revenge. This new version, I don't feel anything towards the guy.. he's just a dude pretending to be the Battosai. Also the old guy in the new version, he looks too similar to the same old guy who held Yahiko captive on the fact that his parents owed him money. So if they're the same person, then they've really changed up the anime from what it was originally.
The old anime added scenes , story and characters that weren’t in the original source which is the manga , the new one is actually more faithful to the source material
A lot of points you talking only makes sense in the 90’s, some of them, it is it’s own thing, the doctor in the 90’s is totally different character from the 2023 show, you didn’t consistently try to be objective, but you’re bias on 90’s, just like that doctor/oldman, if they stayed the same as the 90’s it contradicts how the story was envisioned by the creator, just for your simplicity on Gohei’s motive, Kenshin wasn’t meant to stay there in the first part, she barely knows him why would she be attached already to Kenshin?, she only lets him stay after being saved twice, after not letting her Dojo get taken over, in the 90’s version what’s with Kaoru punching Kenshin, the guy who just saved her, that’s how she say thanks, she was helpless and needed saving, and then she can do that? Not a good way to establish relationship.
The point of this video was to compare the two show's first episodes. What happens after and the way the changes in characters affects future plotlines is important, but it does nothing to affect the quality of these two first episodes. And yeah, there is no reason for kaoru in the new version to care about kenshin, that's why the show should work to make her wanting kenshin to stay feel natural like the original adaptation did. Also as a side note, kaoru did offer kenshin to stay after the first time she was saved by him. And you're misrepresenting the scene where kaoru punches kenshin greatly. She did that on accident as a joke in response to him talking about their bathroom incident. She didn't intend on punching him, kenshin just didn't dodge like he was able to during the fight he just got into. It's a genuinely cute joke and moment of levity after the big reveal of kenshin staying. It's better than the crappy joke at the end of the new one's first episode where kaoru just asks about kenshin's age with this really awkward comedic timing right before the credits roll. You seem pretty biased yourself, only determining if something is good based on the most surface level of analysis as well as if it's following the outline of the manga to a T.
@@etheri0n959that punch was more than just a joke, it’s trope of the series, like you can compare Kaoru to those type of character, Sakura, Nami, and brute, but damsel in distress in actual, Not being bias like, I just don’t wear nostalgia goggles, and Surprise surprise I never read the manga, that goes for most anime I’ve seen, only scan few pages, but not read the whole thing, so the Manga bias argument is out of the way, I’m seeing it for what it is, I grew up on 90’s anime, and you talking to someone who didn’t quite enjoy Hunter X Hunter 2011. Too much liberty and changes from the original vision can be good and bad at the same time, it creates problem, plotholes and misconceptions. The 90’s anime quality drops after Kyoto arc, it just didn’t feel as good as the previous, it just went fillers all the way to the end. At least the HXH 99 end in line with it’s creator’s vision.
@@MaxBraver555 and calling me nostalgia biased is way off too because in my video, I said I didn't watch the original first. It sucks to have someone assume something about you based on their opinion, huh? And yes that punch was a joke in the first episode. I haven't watched the rest of the original show so I can't say anything about the rest of the gags like that, but the interaction that is actually relevant to this discussion is definitely a jokey thing she was trying to do. She literally says she thought he would dodge and the embarrassed look on her face clearly tells you she unintentionally hit him. And the filler stuff you talk about is also not relevant because this is about the first episode only, so again that's irrelevant.
I'M SO CONFLICTED!!!! WHERE ARE THE FUNNY KIDS! AND LIKE THEY DID GRAMPS SO DIRTY!! JUST WHY!! T_T the Oros are sooo just... dry... the dojo seems more lonelier without the grandkids and gramps maaannn
It's definitely a lacking creative direction. I think the old cartoonic expression would not translate well into current anime style but there are ways to make those comedic effect. And you're totally right about the kaoru scene at the end. It feels like anime director for the old ruroken back then had more movies, cinematography background engrained more compared to the current ruroken. I am very cautious on how they're going to deal with the more emotional scenes in the coming episodes.
The trust and betrayal and reflection had the best animation abd direction. Although I consider reflection as a spit to the face of it's creator. Than even he called it out.
Nailed it. Some anime lover parents, especially dads who watch this with their children, would be proud to tell their children that the version of Rurouni Kenshin during their time was better than the current.
What is your point? He already tell much facts why the old one js better, hell even Hunter x Hunter 1999 is better than 2011 one, the old ones always looking to the detail and how to build something to audience, well the New ones usually only follow the manga and ppfffft sometimes is not working
All i know is that the fights with Saito and shishio better be epic. This is one of my fav anime and i hope the new one doesnt disappoint. That first episode threw me for a loop a little bit because there really was no introduction. They just kinda threw us in and it really didnt feel like a pilot episode. I want them to maybe incorporate more of the samurai X backstory though. I love that story!
Kenshins old voice fits for who his is and what he looks like. And no the eyes arent better in the new one, og kenshin when he changes his eyes turn a different color, u get color palette swaps like jojo, his eyes are more angled and sharper so u know hes really pissed off
On point, I feel the same way and was really excited for this remake albeit hesitant because I can see the patterns and read the writing on the walls and we are in a generation where things are just being milked instead of improved upon. Except some videogames.
I just found out today, but I already knew it wasn’t gonna be like the original. The original was a masterpiece and one that I grew up with. Growing up I love kenshin for his goofiness and his seriousness but also I thought it was weird that they try to pair a 16-year-old with a 27-year-old I know times were different back then but come on.
I watched the original, when it was fresh, the OVA’s (old and new), the Live Actions (which are the closest thing to an clean anime adaptation) and now this. The real difference between OG Kenshin and the new one right off the bat is exactly what you said: “Soul” It’s closer to the manga which I do respect, and I still want to see what they do with this new one. But I do wish it wasn’t “polished but generic” I’m really just hoping we get a complete Jinchuu Arc. But glad to get more Kenshin nonetheless.
Yeah, hope you find what you're looking for out of this new adaptation. I genuinely mean that. If it gets a lot better too, then I'll definitely follow up on this video.
@@etheri0n959isode 2 Rearranges events in the manga to make the following arc mesh better together as to not make the aarly mini/episodic arc feel disjointed and at least make the flow a bit better? It has its own merits and "not just riding off the source material". Imo, it's also not a good idea to just compare the new one to the "first adaptation and it is more objective to reflect it upon the source material too. I too like the First OG episode 1 better but that removed the "Olderbrother" for the fake Battosau that foreshadowed a land buy off scheme/scam that will become relevant to the earliest major arc. It might be twist people may not like for the villain but the land scheme thing is more of a world building aspect showing an issue that is predominant to the "meiji era" at that time. Since Ruruoni also do integrate a lot of the historical elements to it. Even the Live action knows that and mesh this early plot point and directly relates it to the big arc for this part of the story rather than cutting out the "land scam" stuff. Over all it is facing the HXH 2011 and FMA brotherhood situation. Those reboots in general makes the arcs that The OG adaptations did feel like more of a digest version of it. (The OG expanded on those arc more detailed and took time adapting it which is mostly a by product of how anime adaptations are usually "adapted" back then.) And in vice versa the reboot versions also faced the repercussions of having the source material already finished so the contracted number if episodes to put in the entire story is mostly set in stone and mostly these reboots shine on areas the original adaptation were not able to adapt, and removes the chunk of the many episodes of fillers (in OG ruruoni, that would be the entire season 2). To give an example although the internet like to clown about OG FMA, the manga canon stories in the OG,(which are the first half of the OG FMA) are better than the Brotherhood version of them. And fans mostly like "Brotherhood" for adapting the story after the 1st half of og FMA. The OG will probably absolutely do the the aearly arcs better and the OVA storyline obviously. and my hopes for the Remake is pace the "OG 3rd season" better and just adapt the Jinchuu arc. And maybe the ongoing Hokkaido arc. In HXH fashion
Your video really summed up my feelings. I hadn't watched the show since I was in middle school. And now that I'm in my 30s I decided to rewatch it on crunchy roll, and couldn't put my finger on why the show felt awful. I thought I was just ruining my own nostalgia. Turns out there's a remake and it sucks. Today I learned.
The thing is, I understand everything you're saying here, and I do agree with it for the most part. You're completely correct on all counts honestly. But honestly, my selling point on the remake is the voice actor for Kenshin. I FRIGGIN LOVE HIS NEW VA>??? SO MUICH??? ITS SO MUCH BETTER????/ So as much life the old animation has, the new one is modern but I can NOT get enough of Kenshin's voice XDDDDD this is veRY much a me thing XD Yes, hey, hello, I'm one of the basic asses who will consume whatever crap studios dish us because I am gullible and don't immediately see the bad in anything until it is pointed out to me.
I exactly feel the same as you feel. This new version is meh at best. The original Anime set the bar very high. I would love to hear more comparable with the future episodes.
@@jerome6578 the new Anime looks good, not the best animation but it's not a bad one either, it's actually in the good ones. As for story wise it's more accurate than the OG Anime as I said before
Watched the original multiple times. And while the original will always have a special place in my heart, the new one does match what current anime is. I am actually really enjoying it. But I can see what your saying.
Solid breakdown. I'd be interested in finding out what first eps you hold in high regard. My personal favorite is probably Samurai Champloo. Really a masterclass in introducing characters by showing and not telling.
Samurai Champloo had a really good first episode, yeah. And the only other first episode that I remember absolutely blowing me away was recently with cyberpunk edgerunners. That was a pretty great first episode and one that a lot of people can learn from in terms of direction, a solid sense of storytelling, and portrayal of a character's psyche and mental state degrading over time. It's all around pretty excellent.
I get a few of your points, but honestly, I think the less goofy tone works better. Kenshin is a war vet with PTSD who is trying to overcome his trauma via devoting himself to a more peaceful way of life. Nobuhiro Watsuki always wanted the story to be more adult, but the producers decided to shounen-ize it to broaden the appeal. If you watch the OVA Tsuiokuhen, there isn't a single joke in the whole series. There are barely even any happy moments at all. Kenshin's story is romantic and tragic, not primarily comedic.
I feel they're going for a much different tone with these two adaptations; the original one was more willing to lean into comedy to balance out the darker subject matter, more friendly towards younger audiences. I feel this adaptation is getting rid of over the top reactions, being more muted in order for it to be more mature, more serious and maybe even darker (like the OVAs). One thing you didn't mention was when Kenshin was getting arrested and the old guy paid the cops off, Kenshin was clearly disappointed that happened, that the justice he fought for was corrupted. The old guy talking about his motivations being driven by money and how money runs the Meji era, that sort of thing I believe will be tackled more. It's clearly going for something different, so idk if a 1:1 comparison will do in this case. It's not like FMA & FMAB where the original was animated while the manga was going so it had to create its own story while the latter could focus more on the source material, so they were similar in tone.
I don't really think that matters when talking about comparing these two shows. I'm comparing these two shows on how they handle the same material, which is the story they adapt for the first episode. And in my opinion, the original adapts that story better by focusing more on kaoru and kenshin's relationship. While I love the infectious energy of the original, that's not the most important part to me. What it boils down to is that the new show does not tell a story too well in its first episode. That's why i ultimately don't like it that much. And if we're talking about fma 2003 and brotherhood, those two shows have very different tones and stories as well past the point the original adaptation strays from the manga. The rurouni kenshin situation is pretty similar to the two fma adaptations, so much in fact that some commenters have already compared this to the fma adaptations already.
@@etheri0n959 well if you focus on two different aspects the story telling will be different. Also I’m not saying you’re wrong here, a lot of your assessment is correct. I just think this version is meant to be more grounded and serious. However I do think that is the way to do it when doing a remake, if you do a remake what’s the point of you do it exactly the same? Once again, I am not saying your assessment is wrong, I agree with a lot of the points you made, I just think they’re trying something is all and yeah, maybe the story telling falls short early, but the differences in comparing the two is kinda what keeps me coming back to it
@@reeseseater12 yeah, I didn't mean to sound aggressive, I just wanted to respond to your comment. But sorry if I came off that way. I don't seem to know how aggressive some of my responses sound in text. But yeah, I don't think it's bad to try something different, I just don't think the remake does that very well either. Like, I don't really see it as a more mature tale on the story, it's just more bland to me, but that might just be me, I don't know. Sorry again if I came off as aggressive. I'll try to stop doing that.
@@etheri0n959 no, not at all. I just wanted to make it clear that my disagreement isn't with your arguments, I agree with those. Just that I do think there was something you overlooked, or maybe felt you didn't have to include in your analysis. I do admit, the 1st episode of the remake seems rushed, the original felt like a fuller episode of you know what I mean. You're good
@@etheri0n959also keep in mind that the original strayed away from the manga , while this one is trying to be faithful to the source the manga at least from what i have heard. So as long as it adapts the source material which is the manga , faithfully thats all that matters to me
I think I know what’s been bothering me. It’s kenshins head/face. His face looks a lot younger and he’s 26-27 in the original series. He looks 21 in this.
It's pretty much the same situation where people compares the 90's adaption of Hunter x Hunter and the 2011 version. For me, the two adaptation did a good job adapting the manga. All I could say is I'm good with it as it's not gonna be like Shaman King 2021.
I haven't watched the original so I can't really compare the two. But I recently finished season 1 of the remake and I personally really liked it. About to start season 2
After watching three episodes of the "new" Kenshin, I can officially say that between the original series and the live series --- they should have left it be. This series feels empty, as you said, and it's all tell, don't show instead of show, don't tell.
The Second episode is way better. At least the new Rurouni kenshin is better than the new trigun. But I watched the old Rurouni kenshin at least 5 times.I miss the original music and I kinda miss the old voice actor but we can’t get everything thing in life
The new Trigun had an awesome season finale after a rough start. The new Samurai X (the dub name is easier to spell) Isn't even up to episode 3 yet. The Trigun reboot has a unique if offputting to some art style, while the new Samurai X looks like every other modern anime. How is it better so far?
I am watching RUROUNI KENSHIN for the very first time this new adaptation. Nor Movies. I love it because with the modern animation. Hope they'll cover the whole story.
Hearing just the opening song made me dilike the remake instantly lol. But I gave it a chance and watched through the first episode. It was just a decent retelling of the original story, with more detailed fights which is fine. I watched the original first episode right after and I found it to be better. Watching episode 2, I went in not expecting much. Yeah the rock music was still jarring, but cool and different I guess. But after watching to the end, I now wish to continue watching the rest of the series. One thing I really liked about the remake is that in episode 2, it took a few moments to explain the major clans of the Ishin Shishi faction and how the Satsuma became in charge of the police in the Meiji Era, while the Choshu were in charge of the military. I know that not a lot of people would appreciate that exposition, and it might have ruined a bit of the pacing, but as a history fan, I really enjoy those, and I hope they would continue with more historical info. The history is actually what made RK my favorite anime even though I consider many other anime to be better.
I see. Some people seem to disagree, but the majority of comments seem to think episode 2 is a massive improvement. I'll go into it and see if it's true.
The new adaptation sticks much closer to the manga, but at the same time, it toned downmuch of the humour, like Kenshin's funny expressions. Though they managed to make him more goofy again in the second season
Would love to here if the new Anime gets good or stays as bad as you described the fist episode. I wasn't planning on watching the remake, but I do have fond memories of watching the original dub on Toonami, so I would like to know if the remake does get better, although I doubt it will.
Im glad they are bringing it back. Still glad to of watched all the og dub and the movie. The og dub is my favorite and glad i seen it before this new one.
I grew up watching the old one, and still will watch the new one not for the fact that the comedic stuff were gone as they made it more serious and much better and because reol sang the ending song just kinda hits it way hard on my heartstrings LOL.
I really want to watch this shows original anime but I don't know where! Can somone pls tell me where I can watch it LEGALLY or where I can buy the whole set legally? 😭😭😭😭
I don't dislike the remake but I think its a masterpiece, its just fun to watch. Idk, I don't think much about it ig. I see what you mean though, I think you have a good point. I have hope for the future episodes, time will tell I guess.
Yeah, if it gets better, I'll be on board with it. Hopefully that happens. Happy for all the people who found something to love in this new adaptation.
Old kenshin looks more sharp but the new one has a great voice actor that’s perfect for him not Minton that he’s the same jp va of Kazuha so he’s played the samurai role before
I think the new voice while i like the voice actor for doppio. I feel kenshins og voice fits better cause kenshin is suppose to appear more femine, soft and someone who can put u at ease. Its what contrasts his past where he is killing machine. The og voice knows how to shift her voice for slice of life parts, for comedic parts and knows how to drop the bass in her voice for when shit hits the fan
After 4 episodes of the remake, the remake is only better in animation. The plot feels rushed and ep 1 is disappointing🙂 And why?? why did they remove the orange eyes when kenshin goes battosai mode? I can't even tell in the new anime if he's getting seriously angry or not because of the lack of facial details and the OG Manslayer Eyes!
Rurouni Kenshin 2023 isn't that bad I guess.. I still watch it every week.. But these adaptations throughout the years just make a lot of changes in the story.. Especially the live action.. 🙁
This remake, remaster or whatever is made by Lindefilms, The same studio who makes that thing called "Berserk 2016/17" and Tokyo Revengers, I don't have big expectations from this studio... And btw I watch the first episode from both of them and yeah I like the original more but that doesn't mean I don't like the new one, is not that to say "OMG what a disaster! They ruined the original anime" or something like that, it's good enough in his own way even though it doesn't have a opening/ending song like the original but It is something, hope it gets a bit better throughout the episodes
I think primarily the fight scenes are 1000x better and more dynamic however I started on the new show and went back to watch the entire old one, big fan of both regardless but I agree the original is better, I am excited to see where the remake goes though.
Idk, I watched the original years ago and I tried to watch it again after watching the reboot and the voice acting just felt off… maybe because Kenshin is voiced by an actual guy this time around. I love the reboot so far.
I’m just waiting for the fights I wanna see what they did to the fights. I’ve already seen the show in the story, but I haven’t seen is the fights animated in a modern way.
I just miss the old soundtrack. The way it shifted from beautiful romantic classical style music to 90s action was so good
When you heard that intro on a Saturday morning it could make you fly out of bed to see the latest episode.
When I knew they would remake it the first thing I thought was that if the soundtrack wasn't the same it wouldn't be good. Nothing can top that soundtrack. It is one of the best things I have ever heard
Noriyuki Asakura is still my favorite composer
Same and I feel like alot of the drama doesn't hit the same with out the original music
It's crazy how the original is more animated that the new one. There's so many more dynamic movement in the original, compared to the new one where there are a lot of still or panning shots with only a character's mouth moving. It feels similar to how the Shaman King remake isn't much of an animation improvement from the original
what really irks me is the solid black outlines of the characters, it really takes me out
OK I haven't got to watch the new one fully yet just some clips but unless I'm being fooled the new looks way more animated.
Then what about tokyo ghoul?
As someone who has never watched the original I’m really friggin enjoying this series so far! It actually makes me want to go watch the og so I don’t have to wait week after week
You won't regret it. Dub is amazing too
I would start with the movie (Trust and Betrayal) it is a bit difficult to follow at times, but it is fantastic
The intro for the original will make you cry..its so gangster, compared to this new trash lol
@@kevinsipley7858that's a good start... Basically it is an OVA series tht tells abt true kenshin and how he became hitokiri battousai
Watch the old anime and then watch the prequel ova.
The Old one is much better than the remake. The remake is kind of dull but has great animation. The og has more life and more movement.
Not to mention the OST of the original is way more memorable and moving.
Yeah, that kind of stuff is pretty frustrating to deal with. It's sad that a lot of people seem to agree with it though
The original has a good balance between Comedy and Trama and Romance
The new one focus most on trama and fast animation
it was the music and direction of the 1996 anime that really floored me. it has so much energy and emotion. the scene when Koaru realizes Kenshin had already left. the direction and music made the scene incredibly sad.
Guess this explain why I can't get into anime anymore

This is why I am a fan of the remake

Manga accurate? I would give it credit, still disappointing compared to OG.
Anyway: good and bad with both, and I love them for different reasons, just like the live action version.
the new one has no soul...
Rather than recency bias, I should've said "survivorship bias"
Do you think those issues you mentioned don't apply to old anime? From time immemorial scheduling and budgeting issues has always been around. There are tons of shit anime made in the past, we just don't talk about them anymore. That's why old anime seems "better", because we only remember the good ones.
Most Anime an advertisement vehicle for existing manga (and light novels / toys) after all, so the sponsors will always worry about ROI. It's extremely rare that we get a show where the sponsor says "do whatever you need to make it good"
FWIW, I have been watching anime since the original Kenshin was released.

The original was SOOOOO much better!
the stuff its "skipping" was never part of the source material.
Excellent video, I loved your ability to explain what makes the original first episode great, without even having seen anything past that. Do you plan to continue watching it? Original or remake?
I plan on watching both still. I want to see if the new one improves or not and the original hooked me so I'm staying on board for a long time with that one.

@@etheri0n959 I’d love to see more videos as you progress. Kyoto arc goes very under the radar on youtube
Completely respectable opinion. And it's definitely not wrong to give the new adaptation a chance. Thanks for the comment.
Same. The OST of the original can't be beat, and the dub is actually amazing
More entertaining sure but the new anime is more faithful to the manga , which i love , I always hate when animes stray away from the manga
1:20 I loved how the original handled this scene, we already knew (sort of) that Kenshin was the legendary Battosai cus it was kinda obvious from the intro monologue, but by showing how Kenshin acts like a fool on the outside but lives like a badass is such an awesome subtlety that really fleshed out his character that the 2023 remake really missed out on
Edit: Also the back story on Gohei (massive jobber bad guy) felt much more connected in the 1996 anime than the remake, the fact that he was a former student was such a good motive that pushed him to attack the dojo. Since the remake missed out on it and went with how the manga did (not saying the manga is bad), it felt like there wasn't really an incentive for Kihei to take over the dojo, if they added in Gohei's back story it would've connected plot points up so much better.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to compare and contrast the old and the new for people new to the series.
He appeared again later in the original series despite having his hand crushed though.
Really shows how far anime has fallen.

Why? I mean, one piece is very popular but has goofy expressions. Could it be more about the tone established rather than change of audience?
This one is being faithful to the manga so whatever the manga , which is the original source did its what this anime will do
I rlly like the new one without the expressions and the voice in the new is better also when he gets serious its just cool and all and his eyes
Lowkey, I might just finish the old one; I might even restart. The new one is cool, but sometimes the remastered anime isn't all that, in my opinion.
(The OG expanded on those arc more detailed and took time adapting it which is mostly a by product of how anime adaptations are usually "adapted" back then.)
And in vice versa the reboot versions also faced the repercussions of having the source material already finished so the contracted number if episodes to put in the entire story is mostly set in stone and mostly these reboots shine on areas the original adaptation were not able to adapt, and removes the chunk of the many episodes of fillers (in OG ruruoni, that would be the entire season 2).
SO MUICH??? ITS SO MUCH BETTER????/ So as much life the old animation has, the new one is modern but I can NOT get enough of Kenshin's voice XDDDDD
this is veRY much a me thing XD Yes, hey, hello, I'm one of the basic asses who will consume whatever crap studios dish us because I am gullible and don't immediately see the bad in anything until it is pointed out to me.
I exactly feel the same as you feel. This new version is meh at best. The original Anime set the bar very high. I would love to hear more comparable with the future episodes.

Can you do one on when Saito Hajime enters and figure Kenshin
The detail on the oldone is amazing.
It's pretty much the same situation where people compares the 90's adaption of Hunter x Hunter and the 2011 version. For me, the two adaptation did a good job adapting the manga. All I could say is I'm good with it as it's not gonna be like Shaman King 2021.
I MISS THE OP OPENING IT WAS JUST FULL OF EMOTION
I haven't watched the original so I can't really compare the two. But I recently finished season 1 of the remake and I personally really liked it. About to start season 2
Nice comparison, very spot on. We’ll see how the rest of the series plays out but I think some already know..
On the bright side, we have a banger opening. I also like the color of the remake.
I watch the 1997 and feels more historical, while 2023 feels more New Shonen Jump modern anime.
Im glad they are bringing it back. Still glad to of watched all the og dub and the movie. The og dub is my favorite and glad i seen it before this new one.
I watched the original one earlier this year and I'm currently watching the Remake, I like both to be honest.
The way of creating anime is different today.
However, I do think the shows are both strong in their own rights.
The new one is so emotionless and uninspired. They just wanted to animated cool sword fight moments, nothing else,
The Unique Charms of the 90's Anime.
yeah, I noticed the animation skills were better in the original too. to me it really stood out when the big guy lunged at kaoru in the first battle.
The old animation and style was sooo much better. The new one looked like it was made in Ms paint.
Forgot the old guy's name in the reboot but he gives off a rapey vipe. Knew he was up to no good. 😂😂😂😂
At the moment Kaoru's aesthetics is the only thing I find better than the old version of anime
The lack of heart is why i dropped the remake after just one episode. Its missing from the way they talk too
This remake, remaster or whatever is made by Lindefilms,
The same studio who makes that thing called "Berserk 2016/17" and Tokyo Revengers, I don't have big expectations from this studio...
Oh good I'm not crazy. I made nearly every point you did last week.
The reception to this anime has definitely been weird.
The only reason the old one didn’t have nonstop amazing shots (including during fights) was because they were limited with frames per second lol
