But can I order the parts and the board (including the touchboard) from JLC pcb for example and build it myself? I can seem to find an answer in the dicord plinky forum.
Thanks for the video! I bought one of these built and after seeing this with my limited soldering skills i think I wouldn't struggle very much.
Hi! Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the first plinky and the V3? Much obliged!! ❤️
Plinky v3 integrates TRS MIDI input and output directly on-board, so you sequence polyphonic chords externally and play a melodic line on top on its touch surface. You previously needed the the expander to do that. The revision also upgrades to USB-C, optimizes the build experience (LEDs, headers, sockets, stereo jacks pre-soldered), and introduces improvements to the audio path (less noisy).
ful der won!

Beautiful! It seems like I need a Plinky 😍
I was on the waitlist and missed my notification email again! Maybe next time...
Huh yeah looks like as of today, Thonk sold out of Plinky kits. ETA for the next round of kits is August. www.thonk.co.uk/shop/plinky-kit-001/
Hey, i know im late to the party, but would anyone have a good link to purchase one of these for United States residents? It would be most appreciated.
Hello! Get a kit from Thonk, full V3 kits are available here and they feature USB-C, TRS MIDI and a much easier build than you see here. www.thonk.co.uk/shop/plinky-kit-001/ You can find the new build guide here, LEDs come pre-soldered for the front panel now and you don't have to solder the headers or screen anymore. plinkysynth.com/docs/build-guide-black
I love it, happy patching!
That is a very nice set up that you have. Plinky sounds great.
Came here looking for Plinky sounds (ordered one yesterday!) and I'm loving what I see/hear. Subbed 👉🔘
sorry out of topic, but i really love the music background. sounds so cool!
Thank you! It's from an album Enrica and I made ages ago. It has lots of piano and some electronics, this track feature lots of Bass Clarinet though played by Simone Weber. The music we make has evolved with our modules now, but it's still dear to my heart.
@@MakingSoundMachines yes, love that bass clarinet! thanks for the reply. looking forward to your recent music. btw, i'm getting myself plinky (soon). just want to say thank you for making it available again. cheers.
Realy cool :)
Thank you! Absolutely loving the presets you made!
@@MakingSoundMachines They ARE really amazing. I think we now all must stride to produce even more presets to make this little wonder-box really open up and shine.
What are the huge panels mimicing the Stolperbeats leds? That's so cool!
The big LED panel replicates the display part of Stolperbeats - it's connected to the module in the bottom row via i2c and mirrors what's going on on the small display. Only two of the large modules are in existence: the one you see here, and we bring to shows like Superbooth, and a second one that's available for the public to play at Look Mum No Computer's This Museum is (Not) Obsolete ruclips.net/video/kr69QIOa0C4/видео.html
Ok, now I'm pretty sure my Stolperbeats is missing Percussive Maintenance. )
Haha yeah we need to make that into a finished module at some point.
I am beyond grateful for you guys showing this video. This is almost exactly how I wanted to make my synth! But I had no clue how to go about it. I wanted an additive synth where I could have these same modulation controls while using Faust for my dsp. You guys are amazing thank you so much ❤
Awesome that is fantastic to hear! I would love to hear what you come up with, making a hardware thing is an interesting and worthwhile journey - keep me posted on where you end up with it!
@@MakingSoundMachines I certainly will! Also I would love to support you guys further. Unfortunately I can't afford a kit right now, and I can't see a Patreon account but please let me know how I can show a little more support if you get a chance. THANKS AGAIN!
It don’t be sounding dark
Haha welll .. next one will be darker I promise.
@@MakingSoundMachines 😳
Lorn vibes. Sounds great!
Oh thank you! Just had a quick listen and I really dig it! What are your favourite Lorn tracks / what's your favourite album?
@@MakingSoundMachines I'm super into the album A/D right now. A little more ambient and chill than his other stuff. I'm digging into his sound design process. It's inspiring...and overwhelming. These Meska presets would be a huge shortcut, though it's probably worth learning to do it for myself.
@@NickVu Awesome will check that one out! If you are curious about the sound design, Meska published a walkthrough of the 32 presets here ruclips.net/video/zXjph5cix2g/видео.html - and also patch breakdowns for a couple of sounds, you can find those collected here plinkysynth.com/docs/play-guide The patch from scratch type breakdowns could help you recreate some of the sounds in a DAW - you'd need a flexible Delay / Verb and a crunchy saturation to approximate some of the sounds.
I'm loving it - raw, real, alive. I also definitely want to have a Plinky one day.
Hey thank you! yeah I love that it's possible to perform and record a little piece like this in one take! More fun than putting it together in ableton and drawing automation for sure (done a fair share of that in the past as well).
That's one good looking rack, and it sounds amazing.
Thank you!
🥳🥳
What I love about Plinky is that you don't need much else to make it sing.
Yeah it's really fun to play! It's worth checking out the presets, they do some great tricks with feedback - or if you want to build your own, check out Meskas build from scratch patches in the play guide! plinkysynth.com/docs/play-guide
its like a new chapter in plinky! thankyou meska & msm!
;)
Thank you for making such an awesome, inspiring instrument! It's like a little black rectangle of joy!
Hey Alex nice to see that you guys continue to produce this amazing module. For me always my favorite in my rack since day 1!!! I own the V2 I think ( it’s was the first batch builded by LPZW) Just wanna know the difference between my version and the new one ? Can we update the firmware to have the same or it’s also a brand new electronic module? Thanks a lot again and you have no idea how your module and Discord plinky discussion saved my mind during pandemic though time !!! Vive Plinky et vive Alex Evans 🙏
@@manublond118 Allow me to jump in and answer some of your questions - Firmware as well as Presets are compatible between all versions of Plinky so far, V1, 2 and 3. Find Firmware, presets and install instructions here - plinkysynth.com/ Upgrades from V2 to V3 in a nutshell: - USB-C jacks - TRS midi is now on Plinky itself, before it only used to be on the Expander - Updates to the build process (build is easier, screen can be plug and play replaced) - improved audio path I think with a V2 plinky you are golden, the big update is the onboard MIDI, but USB (client) MIDI works on all versions. If you do an update, make sure you only power from one of the USB _or_ Europower at any time, not multiple at once.
Lovely module. It was fun meeting you at Superbooth24. 🙂
yes great to meet you too! thank you for stopping by!
I can has this sound too? Noice!! Love this tune 🖤
Yes! you need a Plinky, but the presets are free here: plinkysynth.com/presets/

I think plinky is the most amazing synth ever ❤
yeah mmalex really knocked it out of the park! keep discovering cool stuff every time
Great little jam there! I just immediately went to Thonk to put my name down for a Plinky v3, only to find I’d already done it ages ago. Yay!
they are contacting the waitlist now, so you should get mail soon!
Sounds soooo good! 🤩Amazing job bringing back the plinky!
yaaayyy thank you! see you in Berlin!
Nice !
Nice little instrument. See you next week!
Whohoo! See you in Berlin!
This sounds great! I'd love to know more about how you go about making Stolperbeats play chords. Is it hard to do?
The MIDI maps are all tuned to chords, so switching from one map to another plays a different chord (usually they would map to drum expanders). When you long long press shuffle, Stolperbeats can capture the last incoming note from the MIDI in for each drum channel. The workflow is play a not, click a knob, for six instruments, save - I'd say it's not super fast, it took maybe half an hour to set up for 32 chords. Nevertheless, it's a fun hack to play around with.
@@MakingSoundMachines Ah ha, got it. I figured it was something like that. (Though I didn't know about long pressing shuffle.) I think I will stick to using other sequencers for notes and chords.
@@matthewcohen3228 yeah it's more like a fun hack. although one cool thing you can do, is if you stick with that midi recording mode, you can pick a lane and replace its notes on the fly (watch the Stolperbeats / Digitone clips from our channel for a demo)
What the!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's bonkers!
I’ve never used modular setups before. Is there a rack that hold the stolper at a single unit? Is that what I’m seeing here? Can it link up to the SP404MK2? Thanks!
What you see here is just the module itself on the table (probably not a good idea longterm). To run it you need Eurorack power, at least a +12V / -12V supply, and some sort of case - 4ms makes tiny cases called "pod" that would fit a small number of modules. Stolperbeats does not make sounds itself, but you can hook it up to Eurorack drums and MIDI devices like the Roland Tr-8 on the table. The SP404MK2 works as well.
@@MakingSoundMachines So confusing 🤣 Thanks for the reply!
@@401dB Yeah maybe. Sorry : D Happy to answer more questions. TL;DR to your original question - yes, look up 4MS pod and yes, works with SP404mk2
great stuff and interesting setup! I like the sound of the wooden baseplate :) , the dynamic of response.
Yeah that is really the magic of sending piezo signals into Mutable Rings! Rings is a whole other beast with live audio.
Expensive ✌️
They might be now on the used market, as the kits haven't been made for a while. But once we get new kits out to Thonk, Plinky will be available for the regular kit price again.
@@MakingSoundMachines Thanks for your reply. What would be the normal cost for this kit please?
Wow. I really wish they were still selling these kits.
We will help Thonk make Plinky kits, so they will be available again later this year.
They are up for grabs now! I managed to secure one via the waiting list, but you can order now for a Fall '24 shipment!
Dope
Yay thanks! Glad you like it!
Really don't understand what happened to plinky....
There was a big chip crisis starting late 2020 and the main processor for Plinky simply wasn't available until recently. We've been talking to Thonk and we'll help make Plinky kits available again in 2024.
Cute melody
Thank you! It's generated using TiNRS Tuesday, a new version of which has just recently come out.
@@MakingSoundMachines I used to have the original! I need to check out the new version
Hey, question, is the Stolperbeats shuffle percentage variable? As in, the more percentage dialed in the more off-grid the beats?
THIS IS SICK🤙
Wtf ..how and why xD hast the Cash Maschine Midi and Sound ?
The cash register plays MIDI - it's used to transpose a short sequence on a Beatstep Pro, which send CV to Plaits (sound generator). The trigger pattern is generated with a super early prototype of Stolperbeats.
Love this❤
Yes to FX Boy, yes to lighting, yes to Stolper 👾
Whoop glad you like it!
