Best Suppressor for Big Bore Rifles
Hahahaha that box of Federal is huge!! Looks funny. Is it still a 20 round box??
I bought this Ruger last year with a kit to shorten the stock for my 12-year old grandson. He took his first deer and I like the gun. One minor idiosyncrasy is that the magazine will fall out even when you think it's all the way in. You have push up on the rear until you hear the click. Hasn't been a problem since we did that.
I have that same setup great little rifle I also have the same scope but I have the freedom 6-18-40 great backpack setup for hunting the rifle has a removable bolt knob and mine comes in right at 8.5 pounds the 18 3/4 inch barrel is set great to go right into a pack or a frame . Mine shoot factory ammo 175 eldx right at 1/2 moa at 100 yards the 160 grain offering would be a great option for that rifle to get a little more velocity .
.50 express in a Japanese Browning has better steel than the Belgian made and can handle higher chamber pressures and routinely has muzzle energies of 6000 foot pounds to 7,000 ft pounds there isn't a single professional Hunter an Africa that wouldn't be opposed to have a client have that and go after Cape Buffalo or leopard or any other Dangerous Game
Being 74 years old I was introduced to the Ithaca Md 37 16ga when I was 14 years old. I have to say while I was in California you could use lead shot on everything except waterfowl. The Ithaca 37 had a 2 3/4 inch chamber which was no problem until the current Governor of California ruined the State. I fell in love with the Winchester Md 12 with the 3 inch chamber and bought quite a few of them when I had a Curio and Relics FFL- personally I feel that as far as pump actions go the Ithaca 37 and the Winchester Model 12s were the Finest Pumps ever made. My love for the Double Barrel 20 gauge I bought from a Hardware store was my first shotgun I even owned and has taken many rabbits , quail and chucker in California. Being born, raised and went to school in California and working in California my whole life when I retired I moved to Carson City,Nevada in 2017 and spend the summers in Homer Alaska were my 2nd Home is .
I like it but I have no use for it.
There are no lightweight aftermarket stocks for this rifle. I have a gen 1 and still waiting for a carbon fiber stock.
I run the Talley rings on my Mesa in 6.5PRC and constantly recommend them to the hunting party. Does anything beat them in the balance of weight, price and reliability? Great video.
Thank you for this video. We need more instruction on basic equipment care. These types of skills are very useful and help us be more successful and self-reliant.
Thank you! This is a very compelling case for this rifle. I admit I’ve overlooked the Ruger’s control feed rifles for some time now because of the relatively poor accuracy reports. However, if the cartridge of choice is a .375 Ruger and the quarry of choice has a vital area 12+ inches in diameter then 1.5 MOA is just fine. The rest of the rifle does seem well thought out for thumping big mammals at short to medium range in harsh climates. The price isn’t bad and it’s a handsome rifle to boot.
I like the idea but would like to see it applied to a small case. Imagine a 6.5 Grendel size cartridge performing like a 6.5 RPM from a 16 inch barrel. 😮
Love it. Revolutionary tech
Respectfully BS on 270 3006 not meeting the needed want to there. 😉 CAN you shade light on a ? for the Same rifle in 06.. 20 or 22" barrel..?? The standard is listed as 20" while the pure Ugly stocked color ,Predator model is listed as 22" Wondering if thats a mistake on there website.. Something havent took up with them yet.
BTW This shod be good series carry on n looking fwd to.
Both can do the job, but tend to take a bit more load development or experimentation with different brands of factory ammo. 600 yards is a pretty long shot. Since he decided to just try three brands of factory ammo and certainly wants to reduce the wind drift at 600 yards (so errors in estimating average wind speed is less important), it makes sense that he chose a magnum-class cartridge designed to shoot high-BC bullets. In addtion, a lot has been learned about chamber design in the century since the 270 was developed and modern "match style" chambers tend to be a little less picky with ammo for accuracy. The 7mm Rem Mag probably would have been the best choice of a "traditional" long-range hunting cartridge that could be easily found in a $700 rifle, but it is held back by its SAAMI specs.. He is probably hedging his bets and choosing the 7 PRC since it was designed to shoot sleeker, higher BC bullets (the Rem Mag needs a longer action/magazine and faster-twist barrel to do the same).
This is a really good video and I can tell that you shopped being a fair man for the people. You didn't buy a Tika, or Bargara rifle. You went with most every podcast has been going with for tge price, quality and accuracy and also a Ruger will be here for years. You really did an awesome job on this video for your followers. Thanks Podnah .
This 7mm backcountry may actually do what the 7prc promised but couldn’t surpass the old 7mm rem mag Backcountry may actually be that cartridge but the jury is still out
They released it too early. Should have included all the handloading information which will answer many questions or concerns. Too much hype with this one. Doesn't pass the smell test. Also, a move to replace brass cases will hurt the handloading market and obsolete many older chamberings currently still viable. If this technology really is an advancement, Federal would make much greater income releasing cases for all cartridges with appropriate handloading data for each.
JvB...I really need a Backcountry Hunting Podcast hat! Do you sell them?
I do on occasion... the fulfillment is a bit of a hassle and I always lose money on them! 😂 Happy to sell them anyway because I love having good folks wearing the brand. I just need to arrange a place to do all the fulfillment.
Spend the extra money for the Tikka, then a scope like Arken. I haven't shot the Ruger Gen 2, but I have a Gen 1 and it is accurate junk (won't feed, cheezy stock, bolt that sounds like a zipper and scratchy trigger
Supposedly they fixed the feeding issue and the zipper sounding bolt but I can’t speak from experience I was in the market for a fairly inexpensive 22-250 for coyotes and was interested in the ruger so I was watching a lot of reviews but still ended up going for the first gen browning xbolt.
The gen 2 is good and fixed all those problems. Tikka are not a budget choice although they are very good.
Hi here in New Zealand, 99% of suppressors are over barrel but in the USA you don't seem to have any. It decreases your OAL of your rifle. Is there any reason or is law preventing it
No, they're not restricted, they're just not as popular over here for some reason.
Appreciate this project, Joseph, looking forward to the next installment.
22-24" 6.5 PRC or 6.5 CM (7 PRC is not needed by most western hunters plus increased recoil) Ruger American Gen II swap out that trigger with a Timney or JARD. Get rid of the radial brake for a directional brake or a supressor. Shoot with Hornady ELDX. Top with Warne Rings and Leupold VX5 3-15 (heck find one used) or a VX3 4.5-14. Bob's your uncle and practice lots. I'm going outside your price range with all that but I dont care lol, save up the pennies or use your tax return etc. Big fan of the Ruger American Gen II as perhaps the best current bang for the buck rifle on the market right now. Tikka is too costly, poor stock, poor dbm vs the Ruger, decent action but overrated by many and you cannot adjust the comb like you can the Ruger American II plus as you mentioned stainless, threading etc. Bipod not needed shoot off your pack. Cheers.
Great project, & one that will be fun to watch unfold. I was one of the “sticks in the mud” who voted for a classic cartridge on Patreon. However, you probably made the right call for the reasons you listed…& I’m just as excited to watch this one develop
Thanks! And glad to hear it!
Whereas classic cartridges like the 30-06 and 270 can be very accurate, they often take more load development or experimentation with different brands of ammo to get there. This is a test to 600 yards with just three types of factory ammo, so he wanted something that is, on average, less picky and able to push a long, high BC bullet faster to reduce wind drift at long range. A lot has been learned about chamber design in the century since the 270 was developed, and the current standard is the "match style" chamber which came from accuracy competitions. This type of chamber has a tube of tight freebore (a clearance of a thousandth of an inch or less) that the bullet passes though prior to engaging the rifling. The bullet is loaded far enough out of the case that its shank starts off inside that freebore, aligning the bullet with the bore better than relying on the case shoulder and neck. The freebore also ensures that the bullet stays near perfectly straight as the rifling is engraved. This design seems to help with average accuracy with different types of bullet-powder combinations.
Whats the thing your sitting the rifle on?
Looking forward to this build
I need to see reloading possibility timevwill tell.
I’m building a 7prc right now for whitetail hunting, my biggest concern is how the Hornady precision hunters will do if a shot presented itself 100 yards or less? I’ve used them in 6.5cm and it was less than satisfactory, I haven’t had to track one with no blood trail from a creedmoor before that as I normally use Norma whitetail 140s and if they run they they leave leave a heck of a trail. The precision hunters did not do that.
I think you'll have great luck with the Hornady 175 ELD-X on whitetail, even up real close. It's a lotta bullet... if you find you're not happy with it, try Federal's 170-grain Terminal Ascent load. It's fantastic and will nearly always pass through a deer.
@@BackcountryHuntingPodcast pass through is what I’m after at short and longer ranges! Pass through usually equals blood trail. Thank you!!
@@BackcountryHuntingPodcastttttttt
I’d go with a Howa barreled action and MDT Field Stock. I’ll wait for the 7 BC Howa or Bergara action.
Great video and looking forward to the next in this series. Some crude person mentioned they don't like your voice or "talking style". Some people have no class and don't recognize class! We are fortunate to see and hear class from 60 to 80 years ago. Thanks for bringing that back!
I have the gen 1 go wild 7prc and I’ve shot a .44 group! Everything is sub moa if I do my part. I put a timney in it my trigger was creepy. My dad’s older gen1 has a fantastic trigger. Guess it’s luck of the draw. Anyways love my rifle. Put a vx5 on it.
Awesome!
i think with the name alone you have to get a 7 BC when available
Looking forward to the next episodes Josef! I’m working on setting up a 7mm-08 Rem build based on the Ruger American Gen 1. I just got the rifle and am getting the scope and rings next. 7mm-08 is more suited for my hunting area a game. I don’t get the chance at Elk here in Texas.
The 7-08 is a great round! I actually set my oldest son up with a Ruger Hawkeye in that cartridge as his deer rifle... It's dang hard to beat!
I set both my daughters on the 7mm-08 and they’ve taken a bunch of deer a couple black bears and a bull elk with them. I’ve been really impressed with the 7mm-08 and been thinking of getting myself one but I already have a 280ai and it’s my sweetheart 😂
PS - I'd like to see a similar project with a Browning X-Bolt 2. (Speed SPR?)
Well Ron, now you have to add an additional chapter to your 7mm book lol
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great video as always Joseph! My only change would be to use the Gen 2 Predator with a 22” barrel to get a little more juice from the 7PRC. My 2 cents.
Jim, I believe he was referring to the barrel length without the muzzle break. When I discussed this with my local gun store, they informed me that the marketed barrel length was with the muzzle break. Hope that helps! I am a big Remington fan and have recently jumped into Bergara, so I’m not as familiar with Ruger!
Ruger measurements are without the break on the rifle.
Congrats, keep them coming. Really enjoy your work
Great video!
I'm excited to see this! I've been itching to build my first rifle before I come out there next year. A 338 RCM would be soooooo sweet 🙂
That would be sweet!
Ready for part two
Dear Ruger, please fire up that old equipment and make me a Gen 1 Ruger American in 7mm BC. Let me customize it. No need for twisty barrel, fancy coatings, and silly new stock. I'm good with the sub - $400 bare basic rifle, like the Gen-1 Ruger American Rifles used to be. Thanks.
My friend the gen 1 was hot garbage.
Excited to follow along.. Unfortunately I have struggled to find any Ruger gen 2 in stock...
A pretty good idea, which I am going to follow, but you kinda lost me when you got to the choice of caliber. The 7 PRC already has some questions about factory ammo velocity, and the new 7 BC is already casting a shadow on it. The 6.5 PRC might have been a better choice. (Just my opinion.)
The 6.5PRC is as effective a hunting round as the 7PRC that is more often shot more accurately due to the lower recoil.
@@nootnuh Good point, recoil and action length is why I went with 6.5 over 7 PRC. Laid a couple deer out with it this year and the ELDX bullets, couldn't be happier.
I would have liked to hear his reasoning behind choosing the 7mm cartridge. It took me a minute to figure out that you were talking about the 7mm Backcountry. The Vortex guys developed a wildcat called the 6.5mm BitchCat which they called the 6.5 BC, so I thought it was a 7mm variation on this. 😀
Definitely a great choice for this project. Many folks out there love their Ruger American 🇺🇸 Gen 1 and Gen 2s even despite their shortcomings pointed out by gun reviewers. I am looking forward to seeing this come together. I’m also looking forward to Ruger releasing their left hand versions at Shot Show this year.
Love this rifle! Yes, being in this price range, it has a few short comings. But with federals loading in 175 eldx I am getting 3/4 moa. And with hand loads I'm getting 1/2" 5 shot groups. I was able to harvest a Blacktail and Black bear this season. Both shots were right on the money. My only regret is not getting the Ruger American Gen 2 Predator in 7mm Prc to get that extra 2 inches of barrel length.
That’s awesome!
Great video.
Congratulations!
Arken optics are a viable choice for optics.
I have my reservations about them but I'd like to try one.
Excellent presentation as always, Joseph. Now, if this _Ruger American Gen 2_ is the go-to budget rifle option. Then what are the mid and top tier equivalent rifles, if I may? Second, have you ever hunted the infamous *Kaibab* here in Arizona? I am sure the viewers/listeners would enjoy hearing any stories out of that remarkable strip of land. Many of us will never get the opportunity to caress the Kaibab regardless of our lifelong residential status here in the great state of Arizona. When one hears about "The Hunt Of A Lifetime" as we so often do; the Kaibab Plateau is the first and only place that comes to my mind. Perhaps this is a topic worth discussing in a future episode. Lastly, we welcome any and all content you wish to provide on the _6.8 Western._ Please and thank you. It has quickly become my new infatuation. In fact, I even went out and bought several boxes of ammo for myself and some reloading items for my Father. This is my incentive to continue the pursuit of this project. Nevertheless, there just seems to be something about the cartridge that sparked a renewed interest. Perhaps it is the name or the fact that is seems to be the silent underdog - so to speak. Although, the name _6.8 Western_ certainly has a nice ring to it. You just have to say it in a Clint Eastwood voice to really convey the point. Stay classy my friend.
