Great information in your podcast. I have been practicing with my 300 PRC off a bipod 100 to 400 yards. You three and other elk guides I have been following state a fact, practice, practice, practice with your rifle in shooting positions that are likely during a hunt. Thank you.
Encourage Tate all you can in what he is doing with processed based hunter, this type of experience is surely needed in the hunting landscape. Thank you Tate. Hope to take your class with my kids someday and hunt with you. God bless
Processed based hunting? You mean outfitters, exploiting wildlife for profit giving nothing back compared to what they take, and tying up land so that nobody can afford to go, so forget about taking the kids for $3000.00 , is now called process based hunting? 😂😂😂😂. If you need an outfitter to hunt cow elk, you’re not much of a hunter.
338 Win mag. My dad raised me on high recoiling rifles and in 1999 when I was 11 the 300 RUM came out. He handed down his browning A bolt stainless 26" barrel down to me. He used to shoot hornady 225 interlocks but I figured out a load with 225 barnes TTSX over 67.5 gns IMR 4350 that it enjoys even more. Same hole groups at 100 yds and 2800 MV. To me, there is no reason to consider anything else.
Tate mentioned the 7 saum earlier in the broadcast, what is interesting is many of the 6.8 western shooters are resizing the 7 saum to 6.8, they are very close. Love the 6.8...
Great podcast. I live in N. Ireland. Most guys here use moderator for noise control. Most moderators are over the barrel which is normally about 4". We are more into shorter barrel length. My 308 and 6.5x55 Swedish are 20" barrels and they perform great. My 6.5x55 Swedish stays super sonic to past 1100 metres. I agree with Tate, they aid accuracy & more pleasant shooting. I shoot a lot near castle so the moderator is unbeatable in such an environment.

Hey Joseph. Love the podcast. I have listened to nearly every episode. I have been contemplating a different 7mm rifle so, like many, I have been scouring the internet for information so I can make the right choice. I was confident I needed to move up from my 7mm Weatherby Magnum because the 1:10 twist would not stabilize modern 7 mm projectiles. I like my 7MM WM a ton. Stainless steel barrel and action (Rem 700 action) with an old Browning Boss muzzle breaker/tuner. It has been an accurate, reliable hunting partner for years but I thought it may be outdated especially for elk. I found an article written by you in "free library" on the 7mm WM. You had two and loved the cartridge. You mentioned the long freebore as a positive for shooting heavy for caliber projectiles. I know that Weatherby is hard to find and the ammo is expensive for everyday hunters but I think your listeners would enjoy a breakdown of the 7mm Weatherby and its comparison to 7mm PRC and 7MM Rem mag. Quite a few unique talking points on this cartridge and especially if the long freebore precludes it from the 1:8 twist for stabilization. Also, will the additional speed of 7mm WM be suitable for all bullet designs and perhaps excellent projectile choices for the 7mm WM. I know of one long-time listener that would enjoy an episode on one of Roy Weatherby's best cartridges.
My favorite Elk,Moose or Caribou cartridge is a 340 Weatherby Mag. 225gr Barnes TTSX bullet at 3040 fps has been one shot drops. 115 yds Caribou ,Moose 165 yards and 435 yds Elk. I love the copper bullets and like Ron Spomer says, the shot placement is absolutely the most critical!

Enjoyed all of Your thoughts , thank You for sharing experiences. The best video and the top content gentleman ! In EU we have an estimated 1/2 size “elk” where even we must reconsider our guns/bulletts and shot placement. We hunters are busy now with the rut in September momentan, we use 300WM mostly with 180-200 grain bulletts. Also 9,3 x62 and 8x68 S amongst the older hunters we use. But our shooting distances normally inside 250 meters to a trophy animal . To cow and calf 308-3006 is more than enough they are in average 100…..250 lbs body weight whilest Our EU bulls are cca 280….450 pounds. Anyway 7 mm-300 wm-338 wm are my favorite calibers ! Very very informative material You put together! ! ! Hey Joseph, thank you for having Ron Spomer on your Back country hunting podcast. I've seen you in a couple of podcasts with Ron on Ron Spomer Outdoors.
Have one, and it's definitely enough for elk out to reasonable distances. I think it's just a confidence thing. Craig Boddington's daughter took one to Africa and harvested all sorts of plains game including a nice zebra, which are crazy tough.

You notice Joseph didn’t mention Arizona. Hunting very popular here, but game populations are not huge. Unless you are a bow hunter, you won’t even always get drawn for deer, and you can grow old without ever seeing an elk tag.
It’s become obvious to me that I will never be able to get to hunt elk. Might have been able to afford when I was younger but never had enough time off from working a regular job and farming at the same time. Now at 71+ years with health issues that keep me out of the field even though I’ve got the time. Ron has commented on other shows that it’s cheaper to go to Africa than a guided western U.S. elk hunt. If not for health I would be limited to public land without guide which is probably a crap shoot at best depending on where. With all that said I’ve been accumulating so-called “elk rifles” over the years with the dream that one day everything would fall into place. Out of my stable here are my three horses all loaded with Nosler Partitions: 300 H&H, 35 Whelen and 338-06.
I was fortunate to have been born and raised 20 miles from the Diamond Peak Wilderness in Oregon so I grew up Elk Hunting and took Roosevelt Elk with both .243 and 7mm Rem Mag loaded with Nosler Partitions. My dad had his trusty Model 70 Alaskan .338 Winchester Magnum that he bought new in 1958 and used right up until his death in 2016. Now I live in Florida and hunt whitetail and hogs so I've went back to the good ole .243 Winchester.
I actually watched this episode Live or at least had live chat. I participated heavily when I could in the chat. 💬 I like the 3 more common choices, I knew JVBs not as common choices in the 280 AI and was glad to hear Ron mention the 300 WSM which is what I bought in 2019 for out west, but have yet to be able to use it for that yet. Part of me with the horrible ammo shortage which I would have went with something more common, but at the time my Dad and one brother had a 300 Win Mag and my other brother had a 7 REM Mag. So I tried something different. Thankfully 😅 I can reload. I enjoyed the story telling as well. Demonstrating how tough mature bull elk can be. Plus the point of shot placement with the biggest cartridge one can shoot accurately is extremely valid. Cheers gents
@TheWVgoodguy22 Thanks! This was a really fun episode to create... Unfortunately we have ongoing technical difficulties. The first upload was the wrong (unedited) file. This one glitched and uploaded as a very low-res version, so both audio and video are poor. We're going to take it down shortly, give it a rest, and try one more time. Hopefully third time's the charm!
I agree with Ron, the 300 WSM is kind of the best of both worlds. It’s an amazing cartridge that has a good following but should be more popular in my opinion. The 30-06 or 308 with a 165 grain S&B all copper bullet does the job as well!
I am glad they brought up the barrel length issue. That is something that may hunters seem to ignore. It is also important to note that a factory rifle with factory ammo can be very different than a rifle with a custom barrel and hand-loaded ammo. The 7mm SAUM, for example, gains a lot when put in a longer action and used with longer, higher-BC bullets. It becomes the equivalent of the 6.8 Western. The WSM series also gain extra oomph when loaded long. The SAAMI chamber for the 300 Win Mag is not great, so it can be a challenge to get an accurate load. Many find it overall less expensive to get a custom barrel with an improved chamber, rather than shooting box after box of ammo (or many reloads) looking for an accurate load.
Depends on the terrain for me... Super thick brush and Lee's than 75 yds, I'm taking my Marlin in 44mag. All others it's my 7 mag.... But if I were to build an all around Elk only rifle I'd probably build it around the 338 federal with a 26" tube... Great show guys....
seems most folks talk about the Cartridge..."What's the best Cartridge for Elk?" ....when they SHOULD be talking about what the best BULLET for Elk is.... : (1) - if it ain't Bonded, don't take it for elk, PERIOD ! (2) - 140 grains or above (IMHO) (3) - has to be going 3000 feet per second or just stay home (4) - if you cannot hit a 4 1/4 " clay pigeon at 250 yards EVERY TIME, practice more before hunting if you cannot see the sense in this, just stay home ... Edited to add : My choice? 6.5 PRC with 142 Accubond LR bullets @ 3050 ftsecs ....in my rifle 1/2 MOA shooter and hits like the Hammer of Thor Good Video guys Thank You.........OnWard.........
No best cartridge ! Favorite cartridge, oh yes ! Many of them, and some tied with others, no clear winner ! My favorite … several ! Can not decide ! Ok 7 mag, 175 gr….. never an issue…..close range, .32 win spec. Thanks 👍🤠
30-06 in 1964, nope 30-06 in 2024, yep Modern bullets, propellants, metallurgy, and machining can make a modern 30-06 better than the 300 WM came out as.
I have friends in Colorado that live on the divide at 10: 500 ft the matriarch of the family is killed 40 bulls in that many years with an 06 neck shots where his favorite the rest of the family has gone to 300 and 338 magnums the elk have gone up high during rifle season it used to be a timber hunt
I was watching earlier even commented and then it kicked me off and said the video was private now 30-45min later it’s back but not live This isn’t the first time this happened on your videos I’m not complaining just saying it in case you’re not aware I really enjoy all your content and I’m sure the second half of this one will be excellent
I agree. First time watching this 'cast. Nicely presented. These guys have done a few, it is obvious. Fun. Thanks to all. I do appreciate the discussion that included the 'Ethics' of the hunt. I've made the mistakes, and respect those who are willing to teach.
Thanks to watching too many Ron's plumber videos I have a 338 Federal in a 3585. I'm currently working up a load for the 338 Federal in hopes that one day I'll get a chance to do an elk hunt.
@lurebenson7722 I've got some loads still trucking over 2000 fps and over 1800 foot pounds of energy at 400yds. That would be my limit even if I had a larger cartridge
You need to make a trip out to the Olympic Peninsula for Elk. Massive heards in the Humptulips area and the beaches are close by so you can spend a few hours getting a limitless catch of Rock Crab.
Im a big fan of the 404 Jeffrey case. So i love the 300 and 338 ultra mag cartridges. I own 2 300 ultra mags one rem 700sps and a custom 700 longrange build. And my 338 is actually based off the 300 case necked up to 338 called 338 edge. Also longrange build. These are phenomenal cartridges capable of bringing down anything that walks with proper bullet choices and placement. After that i like the 300 win mag or my 3006ai
I’ve mostly used my 1992 Browning A-bolt stainless stalker in 338 WM but lately I’m thinking the 300 WSM, as Ron stated, is a great option in a short action rifle. I just bought a left hand Tikka in that chambering.
Just started the video but I'll guess the 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag are the top two. Maybe the 300 WSM as an outlier. If I were going to get a rifle today and either handloaded or always had plenty of factory ammo on hand, I'd probably be looking at a Kimber in 280 AI. I feel that many shooters just won't get good enough with the 338 Win or 300 RUM that probably the lower recoiling options will likely be better overall for most shooters. Having said that, I've never shot an elk so don't listen to anything I say. If I had to go today, I'd take my 7mm Rem Mag with 150 Gr Federal Fusions as it shoots them great. If I could do a bit more research, maybe a Partition, LRX, TSX or maybe CX.
What suppressor would you recommend for a Browning X-Bolt Western Hunter Long Range with a 24" barrel in 6.5 PRC? Anything I select is going to make a 30"+ barrel.
48ish mark Copper on Top of cup n core. I dont disagree with those thoughts.. Agree a good bit. However..I believe as this being on track therrs a bit more to it. BARNES ORGINALS..Shot a good deal of them n still have a supply ofdid the same ..best accuracy start with a clean barrel avoid shooting over regular jackets. Am thinking your on right track on copper .Gonna add this ..I think the cooper being a wee bit different hardness than gliding metal ,cant get the grip they need when fired on top of others fouling. I dont think based on liminted it matters with certain ones ie Nosler AB then Etips n Winchesters Deer Sesason then Copper Impact. I also think it matters between Coppers ie one brand to another for same reasons. Difference in alloy one to another. Lets not forget diffrrences in barrels as well. You 2 guys are likely in a better postion than I to shoot n find out.!!!!!! I mentioned the Win Deer Season n Copper Impact Late Uncles 350 Didnt matter with the factory 150 same for 1 my 06s cant say that on anothet stacked 2 then junk on the 3 to 6 Copper . Tried some TTSX loads in 223 then Some GMXs total junk with them. A good bit frustrating all the way around . One reason been cementing a good deal when this comes up. And still havent found out IF the so called Coppers ie Win Impact, Remington Core Lockt Copper n Cut for a couple are actually 100% copper or if gliding metal same as there jackets. If my liminted above with the Win n lesser range session with Etip on top of ABs Is correct n if these others are same material as there companies cup n core.. The answer could / would save a good bit of frustration n $. As well as there junk stay away from them ..Ie Impacts or GMX( Cx) vs power points n Interlocks to the seasonal ,crap a box of x 150s n lets go..( There still plenty of them) Of course Remington Hornady Winchester Norma Could send mes a few boxes of each type ammo n I will find .. 😂😂 Reason I said tou guys are likely better suited to find out.😉
I may be able to clear up one of your questions... I believe that (at least initially) Barnes has/had a patent on using pure copper in bullets. So most everything else has traditionally been an alloy. Whether the same alloy as a given company uses for it's jacketed bullets, who knows.
@@BackcountryHuntingPodcastI believe I heard on a Hornaday podcast that GMX was pure copper and they made CX as an alloy for some reason, I think it dealy with fouling issues better. Was their episode on the CX.
I have never elk hunt before but my buddy bought a cow 🐄 and it was wild when he got it home and got out we tried to catch it but had no luck so he ask me to hunt it and we will split the meat so I was 683 yards and I used my 30-06 180 grain and it dropped from where it was shot!! If I can go elk hunting I will probably use the same setup it’s more accurate then my 308 and hitting harder then my 6.5!!
Sorry but in Colorado you are not allowed to hunt under someone else's license. It's called party hunting and results in loss of game and hunting points along with large fines.
Get me within 300 yards and my 30-06 will work every time. I can hit targets all day at 1200 yards with it. But i wont hunt past 400 yards with that rifle. Still torn between the 6.8 and 7PRC for my next rifle. Ammo price will decide that in the end. I wont hunt with it till ive got a couple hundred rounds on steel at 150-500 yards.
I had the same dilemma before I finally chose between these two. I ended up with the 6.8 Western, and I couldn’t be happier. The only reason why I chose the Western is I prefer short action over long action rifles. Short action are lighter as well, so that’s what tipped the scale for me. The Western also has a lighter recoil compared to the 7 PRC, so that also counted towards my final decision. My rifle is only 5.3 lbs, so felt recoil was a large consideration. Right now, there’s more options in the 7 PRC than the Western, but that 6.8 is starting to pick up. ADG Brass is going to have their first batch of 6.8 brass available by the end of this year. They manufacture excellent brass. Pros and cons for both, but they are both excellent choices. You can’t go wrong with either.
Great podcast and info as always. I hardly ever notice these things but having heard you on Ron's channel first, your voice doesn't sound as crisp. Improving audio quality would do wonders to make the experience more enjoyable.

So why are Deer all of the sudden called Bull & Cow instead of Buck & Doe? Is it because of size? If so, what is the weight minimum/maximum before they change from Buck/Doe to Bull/Cow? does it not have to do with Antlers/Horns?
None of the elk I have ever taken with the 7mm REM Mag ever took more than three steps . I had always borrowed that rifle , however, I just bought a Weatherby vanguard sporter , wood stock, 7mm Rem mag with the 26 inch barrel …. It will be my last elk rifle.

In Norway suppressors are not a controlled item. Very strange that you need a permit for something to protect your ears.
Agree..That's American gun laws . In a country that says firearms are a birthright. We sure aren't very free..
Here in Canada suppressors are actually illegal. But that’s no surprise since the gov really doesn’t care about the people.
Product of Hollywood movies. People think they make a firearm silent - thus desirable to criminals.

Very entertaining and informative of course. You three should get together more often.
(1) - if it ain't Bonded, don't take it for elk, PERIOD !
(2) - 140 grains or above (IMHO)
(3) - has to be going 3000 feet per second or just stay home
(4) - if you cannot hit a 4 1/4 " clay pigeon at 250 yards EVERY TIME, practice more before hunting
if you cannot see the sense in this, just stay home ...
Edited to add :
My choice? 6.5 PRC with 142 Accubond LR bullets @ 3050 ftsecs ....in my rifle 1/2 MOA shooter and hits like the Hammer of Thor
Good Video guys Thank You.........OnWard.........
No best cartridge ! Favorite cartridge, oh yes ! Many of them, and some tied with others, no clear winner ! My favorite … several ! Can not decide ! Ok 7 mag, 175 gr….. never an issue…..close range, .32 win spec. Thanks 👍🤠
I’m a 28 nosler fan myself. For hunting I don’t have any issues with barrel burning
Loved this episode!
3006 NOW LETS WATCH THIS
Given that Ron just did a bunch of 3006 videos I'm very surprised that it wasn't mentioned
30-06 in 1964, nope
30-06 in 2024, yep
Modern bullets, propellants, metallurgy, and machining can make a modern 30-06 better than the 300 WM came out as.
How do you feel about a 270 Wsm, with a surpresser
Greatest vidio ever !!! Thanks again guys
I’d go 300 WSM over 300 Win mag, especially backcountry
20 in bbl 30-06 180 gr bonded bullet (Accubond) @ 2750fps, don’t need a 24 or 26 in barrel.
22" 😜
30'06 22" 165 Accubond 2900fps.
Great episode! 300 prc or 7mm Magnum
You guys definitely need to do more shows together!
Thanks for the video, great stuff. Love to see Twinkie on the video
300 Weatherby with 180 grain bullets hard to beat
I agree
Thanks for the great video as always, you said that Barnes made a 152 grain bullet for the280AI, I can’t find anything on their website. Is this new?
The bullet is a VOR-TX LR load, and you can find it on their website.
270
3006. Mild recoil comparatively speaking. Use the rifle you are comfortable with. Success depends largely on your proficiency.
The best elk cartage is 30.06 270 but that depends on the person thanks for sharing
🤠 You Won't Get Any Argument From Me, As I Have Taken My Fair Share of Big Bull Elk With Both!
Well said

7MM-08 WITH 150 GR ABLR OR 145 GR XLR
I was watching earlier even commented and then it kicked me off and said the video was private now 30-45min later it’s back but not live
This isn’t the first time this happened on your videos
I’m not complaining just saying it in case you’re not aware
I really enjoy all your content and I’m sure the second half of this one will be excellent
I had the same thing happen.
Lots of great choices....but as Jim Carmichael wrote "There are plenty of all-around rifles, but where are the all-around hunters?"
ENJOYED...N Timely God Bless You All.
I really enjoyed this episode, thank you!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it... Sorry about the fuzzy video and audio. Tech glitch that we didn't catch soon enough.
I agree. First time watching this 'cast. Nicely presented. These guys have done a few, it is obvious. Fun. Thanks to all. I do appreciate the discussion that included the 'Ethics' of the hunt. I've made the mistakes, and respect those who are willing to teach.
Great episode. My only comment on production is the microphone was a bit sketchy. Type and or location I am thinking. Thanks again.
Yeah, we had some uploading issues. Thanks!
Is the gentleman on the far left the same guy that’s often in Backfire’s videos?
Yes
@@flynnryder7798I thought I recognized him.
@@drakeslocum2564 Yep went on a Bison "harvest" last month with him (Tate).
@@danblumel he seems like a great guy!
How do you feel about a 300 Weather by mag with a surpresser on it. I owned both,.270 swm and 300 weatherby those 2 are my favorite cartiges.
358 Norma, 338 RCM, 358 win, are some favorites
338 win mag
"Translate to English!" Haha, stick to the All-American 30-06
You need to make a trip out to the Olympic Peninsula for Elk. Massive heards in the Humptulips area and the beaches are close by so you can spend a few hours getting a limitless catch of Rock Crab.
280. Rem
Thank you guys
Fantastic infotainment gentleman!
Enjoyed all 3 perspectives and loved the stories.
Glad you enjoyed it!
280 acly proved
Im a big fan of the 404 Jeffrey case. So i love the 300 and 338 ultra mag cartridges. I own 2 300 ultra mags one rem 700sps and a custom 700 longrange build. And my 338 is actually based off the 300 case necked up to 338 called 338 edge. Also longrange build. These are phenomenal cartridges capable of bringing down anything that walks with proper bullet choices and placement.
After that i like the 300 win mag or my 3006ai
Sounds like a bunch of fellows sitting around the fire, debating the notion of the 243 Winchester is all you need for deer. 😅
I’ve mostly used my 1992 Browning A-bolt stainless stalker in 338 WM but lately I’m thinking the 300 WSM, as Ron stated, is a great option in a short action rifle. I just bought a left hand Tikka in that chambering.
That is my choice also. 175 LRX AT 2900 ft . per.s. 700 yrd. Round all day long. Smasher.😊
300 win mag
For the suppresor advice, I'll try that when the theft is limited to sales theft alone
35 WHELEN GANG RISE UP
I have mine in the Rem 750.
Great moose round here in Maine !! 250 gr. Hornady
I'm here! 35 Whelen with muzzle brake, 250gr. HotCor @ 2710 fps and 4074 muzzle energy.
What's not to like!
It is an absolute thumper!
Why is there no mention of the nosler calibers, 26, 28, and 30?
6.8 western
So I was guessing your answers before and I went 2 for 3. Mr Ron threw me off as I thought he would be the Jack Conner 270 crowd
I mentioned the Win Deer Season n Copper Impact
Late Uncles 350 Didnt matter with the factory 150 same for 1 my 06s cant say that on anothet stacked 2 then junk on the 3 to 6 Copper .
If my liminted above with the Win n lesser range session with Etip on top of ABs
Is correct n if these others are same material as there companies cup n core.. The answer could / would save a good bit of frustration n $. As well as there junk stay away from them ..Ie Impacts or GMX( Cx) vs power points n Interlocks to the seasonal ,crap a box of x 150s n lets go..( There still plenty of them)
Of course Remington Hornady Winchester Norma Could send mes a few boxes of each type ammo n I will find ..
😂😂
Reason I said tou guys are likely better suited to find out.😉
I may be able to clear up one of your questions...
7mm rem mag.
300 win mag.
@@russellkeeling4387I think he meant a domestic cow.
35 WCF 250 gr Speer HotCor bullet. Good for any North American game
I really enjoyed this vid thxs JVB
Ron what’s the difference in chamber in original 280 ackley and new factory chamber?
Since no one brought it up 6.5-300 weatherby magnum
480k video quality? Looks like your camera is old school like Ron! haha
Haha, we did have some troubles uploading this video. However, Ron has his own channel, as I'm sure you know. Check it out if you haven't, however!
Best lightweight scope options for an elk rifle?
My favorites would have to be the Leupold VX-3 and VX-5s...
Great podcast and info as always. I hardly ever notice these things but having heard you on Ron's channel first, your voice doesn't sound as crisp. Improving audio quality would do wonders to make the experience more enjoyable.
@Hunting4knowledge really sorry about the fuzzy audio. Unfortunately we have ongoing technical difficulties with this specific film. The first upload was the wrong (unedited) file. This one glitched and uploaded as a very low-res version, so both audio and video are poor. We're going to take it down shortly, give it a rest, and try one more time. Hopefully third time's the charm!
So why are Deer all of the sudden called Bull & Cow instead of Buck & Doe? Is it because of size? If so, what is the weight minimum/maximum before they change from Buck/Doe to Bull/Cow? does it not have to do with Antlers/Horns?
In this video, we are only referring to elk. Male elk are called Bulls and female elk are called Cows. Deer are still called by the same names.
Best elk cartridge? The one in ur hands when the bull shows up!!!
300 winmag
7 rem mag
None of the elk I have ever taken with the 7mm REM Mag ever took more than three steps . I had always borrowed that rifle , however, I just bought a Weatherby vanguard sporter , wood stock, 7mm Rem mag with the 26 inch barrel …. It will be my last elk rifle.
That Weatherby 7mm RM will do all you ever need to do on elk! Great choice...
my choice 150 grain 270
7prc or 300 win mag
