Summer Fashion Forecast: What's In and What's Out!
Summer Fashion Predictions
Hi Everyone! My name is Samantha and welcome to my RUclips channel - Sewing in Switzerland!
One of my favourite videos to research and make is future fashion trend predictions!!!
This video is all about texture! So many embellishments and detailing, I love it so much!
These are what I think we will be seeing in late summer/early autumn within the fashion world. Will you be making anything similar? Do you follow the fashion trends and runways or are you a total fashion free spirit? I would love to know.
The garments and accessories I have been talking about can be found below, as well as the sewing patterns I think could be used to make dupes.

    Should the lower looper thread be resting over the upper looper arm? When you thread the lower looper you don't do this but at the end of that section it's above the arm, as it is when the upper looper threading begins. It's confusing.

    Oh boy, what a lot of ground those garments cross: from slinky, bias cut, cowl neck, figure hugging mini dresses; to long, elegant, embellished capes and then onto cargo pants! Phew. I must admit I do love me a cowl neck dress or top and I am rather in love with the concept of any cape. I had a cape as a little girl and I don't think have ever got over the love of capes. I loath cargo pants - not sure why but I really do not like them. Like you I have a dedicated sewing space and unfortunately no matter how much I try, I am just not able to keep it tidy. I would like to blame my kids or hubby but unfortunately, there is no one to blame but myself. I was surprised to hear you say how tired you are as I had been sitting there thinking how much better you are looking these days. I thought that perhaps with Spuds cancer being gone perhaps you might be getting a bit more rest. Sorry you are still feeling tired :(

    I sympathise with you about the heat. I don't do well in it either! It gets pretty hot where I live in France so I just close the shutters and sit indoors but it isn't much fun. One of my favourite summer patterns is the Grainline Scout Tee. I know it is very simple but made in a lovely fabric it can look really nice. I also wear a lot of Indian block print fabric as it is so light and floaty.

    What I would like to see from ALL pattern companies is a straight on front photo and straight on back photo. No hands in pockets (we can all see you have pockets, well done), no cocked hip. Just the model standing up straight and the photo taken head on (or back on). After that, go to town and do what you like but it is those two boring head on / back on photos that tell us so much about fitting. Cocking a hip totally throws out grain lines, hands in pockets pulls the fabric away from the tummy and potentially the front crotch line, making it harder to see what the true fit is. OK, rant over for now.

    There seems to have been a trend over the last year or two of using invisible zippers in trousers, often at the side seams, if not then at central back. My issue with that is that invisible zippers do not have the same strength as a regular zip. It is not that the zip is the simply reversed and a special slider is used, the teeth of the invisible zips are different and they do not the same strength as a regular zip. When a pattern shows an invisible zip in trousers I simply put a lapped zip instead. If someone is checking out my clothing close enough to comment on the type of zip I have installed they are standing way way to close.

Lol, just heard your comments on the dress. You hate it and I love it. It makes you think of a 1940's dress and that is the era of clothing I love. You want patterned fabrics to remove attention from the waist darts but guess what ...... I would go out of my way to draw attention to those wonderful constructs. Nope, sorry Sam, we will agree to disagree on this pattern. I find the shirt very sew-sew but that dress is gorgesous Hey, think of it this way ... If we ever met up, at least you would not have to worry we might both turn up wearing this dress.😁

    SH7 Oxbow pants - rust orange jeans for autumn. Yes please. I just bought a blue top recently that has this sort of rust burnt orange contrast in what my daughter described as a lava design. Either way the top is fantastic and if I could find a denim or twill that was in a similar colourway I would make these without a second thought.

    Hi Samantha. Great vlog, enhanced by a pug sneeze! I'm in Sydney winter so pants are very relevant to me. Some back story about Jo the designer behind FMN patterns. On her latest dress release she talks about the fact that she has long COVID and has not been able to sew and design very much for a long time. She acknowledges that this has impacted on the availability of photos showing the dress on different body shapes etc. I wonder whether this also affected the re-release of the skirt you reviewed. I really like the look of the Merchant & Mills pants and loved your friend's description of their aesthetic! I would like to learn to line pants because I have some nice wools which are a bit itchy.

    Hi at 11:04 you show the thread being passed under the arm connected to the rod, later in the video this seems to be over the arm (21:00 for example) is this a mistake or how it should be? I have an issue where the machine starts correctly, but I get lose loops on the back, when I cut the chain to release the fabric, I have 6 threads not 4, one is looped around the neck (where you are pointing to at 7:25), this can be pulled out to leave 4 threads, but it keeps doing it every time. I have rethreaded the machine multiple times, cant understand why its doing it. Thanks for any assistance

      I see this also. I was used to threading my 1034D (no issues) so I'm watching this to see what's different with threading the M343D. On the 1034D it stays as it's first done here, left under the looper arm.

    To your comment on the grain line I would add one thing. I would say on each piece of fabric you have cut, I would mark where "grainline" is. ie mark the incorrect grainline, maybe use a piece of carbon paper or sewing chalk paper between the pattern and the fabric to mark the grainline on the fabric. That will also be very illuminating as to why grainline is so necessary.

    With being bad with numbers, what I do if I need to add say 1/4 of a number, or half a number, is to find that number on my measuring tape and then fold that bit of tape into the desired numbers of pieces. For example if I need half of 10cm, I find the 10cm mark and fold that portion of tape in half and I can visually see that it is 5 cm. I have worked that way for years.

    I have used overlocking thread on my sewing machines for years and that includes using it on an industrial machine. My mother insists on using Gutterman thread on her machine but I still use overlocking thread. I would, however, warn against using old thread on a sewing machine. I used a thread that used to below to my grandmother when she used to sew for my father when he was a small boy. That darned thread used to break about every 1 to 2 minutes of sewing. I still use the thread but the spool has a little label on it saying "use for hand tacking only" as I know that at least it will be easy to remove :)

    Being good at maths is often down to the quality of the teaching. At school I was in the middle group and doing really well, so against my wishes they put me into the top group with someone who was doubtless good at maths but not teaching. So they put me down into the bottom group and I don't think I ever passed a maths exam. Later in life I had a job doing statistical analysis!!!!! One of the things that was taught well at my school was sewing, with a brilliant teacher, a skill that I have never forgotten.

    I sew for more then 20 years and I stopped buying branded thread at all. By accident I discovered that if I use embroidery needle for my sewing machine (Janome), I can use whatever thread I have, even the cheapest one, and have perfect seam without skipped stitches, shredded thread and whatever. I bough my Janome before pandemic started and everything was ok while I used needles that came with it. Once I started using standard needles, problem with skipped stitches started. I investigated the problem and discovered that it is usual for Janome and the solution is special Janome needle which was not available in my country. Found it in UK shop but it was very expensive. Found it in Taiwan for much more reasonable price but they did not ship to my country because of pandemic restrictions. I was locked at home with lots of time and limited on-line shops available so I started to compare technical characteristics of different needles and found out that embroidery needles are most similar. Now I sew everything, both knits and wovens, using only embroidery needles. They are tiny bit longer then standard ones that helps not to skip stitches and their holes are bit bigger then usual which is perfect for cheap thread. So I not only found solution to my skipped stitches problem but also can save on thread now. My favorite needles are Organ embroidery antiglue. Inexpensive, hard working and give perfect result every time. What I want to say with this - do not follow blindly brand recommendations. Look deeper and think WHY they are better and don't overpay just for brand.

      @SewinginSwitzerland Месяц назад

      Hello, this is such an incredible recommendation, thank you. I am always blown away by the creative problem solving sewists/sewers have and the way you reached this fix is so amazing! I have a Singer and will try this on my machine to see if it’s not just Janome’s they work on. I am not an embroiderer so not overly familiar with the needles - do you use a particular size needle? I always recommend to beginners using a newly purchased, branded thread so they can eliminate a potential problem right away, especially as they can often encounter those skipped stitches etc. Do you find they blunt quicker or snap or anything like that? Such a cool fix, looking forward to trying it out!! 😘😘❤️

    • @kristine2916
      @kristine2916 Месяц назад

      @@SewinginSwitzerland it is just standard 75/11 size sharp needle. Costs couple of euros per 5 needle box. I am sewing with it mainly knits (80% of my time) and replacing only when it starts to feel bad (probably every 8-10 garment). No, it does not cut my knit fabric, there are no holes and it does not run. Lots of leggings, pajamas, t-shirts and panties sewn for whole family. I am 55 and have grown up with old good Singer sewing machine and my mom and grandma never changed needles unless they have broken. When I got my first Pfaff 30 years ago it was good with any needle I had so I was very confused when my new Janome started to behave poorly. I bought best needles and best thread available and it behaved well for a very short time and then again started to skip stitches and even break the thread. Serviced my sewing machine twice, it did not help much. It was very annoying. If pandemic hasn't started, probably I would just look for another machine but now I am very happy with it because simple embroidery needle solved all my problems.

    be careful with Tiana's patterns if you are plus size. I am 5X according to their size chart and made simple sleeveless tank top just to test them. Grading was awfully wrong with shoulder straps at least 5 cm longer then needed and neck opening way too low. They graded the pattern without thinking that when gaining weight people gather it in certain places and definitely their bones and torsos do not become longer. I had to notice it immediately just by looking on pattern but unfortunately I only printed my size so it was not apparent until it was too late and bias binding were applied to neck and armholes. I salvaged my top by chopping off 5 cm from top and 5 cm from back straps (so whole 10 cm in total!) just because I loved the fabric but I do not want to try more complicated patterns were way more adjustments will be needed.

    Thank you Samantha! Love the Ethel top and the swimsuit. I do have the habit of wrapping the fabric around me🤭 ...now I'll have to imagine the catwalk strut! 🤩

      You are so welcome! Both look gorgeous, it’s really heating up here so I need to get my summer sew on! Ha, I am so relieved to hear I’m not the only one! I thought everyone did it 😂😂 highly recommend the catwalk strut. And the occasional superhero cape to shake it up 😂🫣😘

    I just finished Tiana's closet top. I made the Romy Lantern Sleeve blouse, I never really found the sewing instructions, I think you have to read the blog. I went on RUclips and found two sew along, Sew Happy did the best job, but I found a couple. The pattern is not oversized, or has a lot of ease. I would say it's a nice fit. Just don't size down. The pattern appears to be drafted for a large B or C cup. I am a C cup and it fits fine. I did have to drop the dart by 1 inch. Hold the pattern up and check it. I also found I needed a broad back adjustment. I can wear it but it would fit better with that adjustment. The shoulders were fine, because I didn't size down. I would also suggest checking the sleeve cuff, you might want to add a 1/2 inch. For your information, I am 5'6, and have an inverted rectangle shape, and a sewing C cup. Hope that helps. I made the XL.

      Thank you so much for such comprehensive feedback on your sew. I am very grateful! I LOVE the lantern sleeves, they are absolutely stunning. I’m a huge sucker for a statement sleeve! That’s such incredibly helpful information thank you, I’ll be sure to make a muslin as I think I’d definitely need an FBA at least. What fabric did you make it in? Thank you so much again, I appreciate you ❤️❤️

    I really love these recommendations! I'm a Seamwork member and made the Benning dress two years ago (plus have another one cut out) and I had no idea that they made it free! It's such a fabulous dress and absolutely perfect for the summer!

      Hello! Thank you so much, I really appreciate the feedback! How is the Benning to sew up? What fabric choice have you gone for? It’s next on my list to make, was really surprised it was a freebie actually, it is gorgeous! 😍🥰❤️

      @@SewinginSwitzerland The Benning is super simple and fun to sew up - the gathers take up the most time. I sewed it up the first time in a rayon and I've worn it summer after summer, dressed up and down. My new one is in a linen which gives it a different feel and structure in a different but beautiful way. It's a great pattern and Seamwork instructions are excellent!

      Thanks Kim, tried to do it so it wasn’t the usual ‘freebie’ suspects but a bit of a different selection! 😘😘❤️
