A gold star for anyone who understands all five media references ⭐
The 23mm was my first prime and, although I'm mostly out with my GR IIIx nowadays, I love this lens for the same reasons as you. Thank you very much for your video and I'll see you in the next one, too! :) Bdw. I truly enjoy your newsletter, it's really great work you put in there.
Understandable! Every time I use my friend’s GR IIIx I'm amazed 😭 I appreciate you watching, and the kind words about the newsletter. I deeply enjoy writing it!
Which 23mm for fuji x would you recommend if I want something with more character?
100% the Voigtlander 23mm f/1.2, such a lovely lens. I also have a video on it!
Dorian posts, I click. But for real, I have been shooting with the XF 23/2 and the Voigt 23/1.2. Just depends on the day and how I want to engage with the camera. Good atuff
I appreciate that! And yeah the 23/2 is my favorite first-party lens, while voigtlander might be my favorite in general. I need to try their 18mm f/2.8.
When not using the X-T4 with the XF16-50, I built my own X100V, I got an X-T1 with the XF23 f/2 and I'm a happy camper.
That’s quite the combo! 📸
This lens remains almost permanently attached to my XT4. I think i need to get the square hood though! Will it help my photography? No... will it make me happy? Yes. Love the video.
Square hoods look so good 😂 thanks for watching!
Apart from the FOV I think i really enjoy the compression of 50mm too. (Not a 33mm on APS-C... just a 50mm on any system, with whatever FOV that results in)
Drop dead lens to have is 23mm f2 / 50mm f2. You'll be able to handle everything in life.
It's nice to see you here too Jason.
@Enrique-the-photographer you too!
Those two are easily in my top 10 lenses I’ve ever used.
@doriyancoleman I agree. 50mm f2 is my default outdoor portrait lens. The 35mm f2 comes in second followed by Viltrox 85mm f1.8 II. That's my portrait trio. I always put my primes lenses in duos or trios. 18/27 16/35 23/50 23/35/50 12/27 and so on.
I absolutely love this lens! Its size, weight, aperture ring, ability to shoot from the hip, the way it tells a story at 35mm full frame, its weather resistance, and its character at f/2.0 are all fantastic. The only thing I dislike is my addiction to its field of view. I always end up putting this lens back on after using the 18mm or 56mm-it just feels like home to me.
We have that in common! Love the 18mm options as well, but I always come back to this. Appreciate you watching 🙌🏾
Def a solid lens!
Indeed! 📸
50 plus years of shooting, Nikons and Leicas, and this was my first Fujifilm lens, bought with an X-T2 years ago. I agree, this is a very fine lens. Its small, sharp and priced nicely. I actually bought a second one in chrome for my silver X-T3 which was stupidly redundant, but it looks cool. I always had a 35mm on my film cameras and this little 23mm on my Fujis leaves me lacking nothing from the film era in terms of image quality.
100% agree! Chrome on chrome is clean too 🔥
I *just* sold this lens to a friend getting into Fujifilm. It's a great lens that I recommend to pretty much everyone (previously his only lens was the XF 16-80 f4). It's so versatile… but personally I've come to prefer either be wider with the XF 18mm f2 or more narrow with the XF 35mm f2. If I could only have one lens it's what I'd want though. Still, it's really good and if I could justify having loads of lenses this one would certainly be among them. Incredibly versatile. Thanks for the video! Always good to see your stuff! :)
That's fair! I'm sure your friend will get a lot of value out of this lens. Appreciate you watching 🙏🏾
Have used it on my XT3, XT5, XE4 ... truly amazing
Glad you've enjoyed your time with it! This, the 35 f2 and 50 f2 are truly excellent. Thank you for watching 🤝
✌️
Much love! 🤞🏾
Dude, SO good to see you back. I love your reviews, and this video is exactly why. Tight script, great shots, good info 👌
Hey! Thank you for your continued support. It means a lot! 🙏🏾
@doriyancoleman especially love the shot at 4:38 , your b&w photography is some of my favorites!
I wanted to add a second system to my Olympus/OMSystems cameras. I got no further than the X100V and went Nikon ZF last year with a voigtlander 40mm 1.2 and a 26mm 2.8. I’m keeping the X100V until it dies but it’s that lens in your review that kept me away. I just wasn’t impressed with its closeup abilities. I had hoped they would update it when they announced the 40 megapixel sensor. And now with all the Fuji issues with the app and auto focus I feel like I dodged a bullet. Come on guys I mean Olympus/OMS I have been using WiFi to download video and raw since 2016. Get with the teens guys!
A pre-production X100VI, as well as the old-timer duo of the 35 1.4 and 18 f/2 are the only Fuji equipment I’ve ever had prominent AF issues with 🤷🏾♂️
@@doriyancolemanbeen videos almost all year with the firmware issues on the xt5 auto focus issues.
We’re so f***ing back.
My man! 🤞🏾
@4:00 Strangely, I liked it uncropped. Oh, and I wonder what you think of those that shot from 90mm thru 150mm?
It’s not just exif data that tilts me to the voigtlander 27mm f/2 - a key feature is its ability to utilize the magnification upon manual focusing feature. With the Thypoch, one must press the back dial to get a magnified manual focus. Love your videos
Self edit - although this benefit I suppose is marginal cuz only for x-pro3; x-e4 and later etc…
That's fair! All good reasons. Thanks for showing love!
Its 28 1.4 in leica fullframe, whats the focal length in fuji?
40mm
Its better if they make 18 1.4 28mm equivalent
Great video. Concise and to the point
Thanks! I try to make them only as long as necessary.
Hey Doriyan. I have this camera too. Such a fun camera for street portraits. I do struggle with it overexposing. Especially in auto mode. Even with a handheld meter in contrasty situations can be difficult. Any metering tips?
So much fun! When it comes to “tougher” lightning scenarios, I go off of instinct tbh, and/or lean towards a slight underexposure. I also don’t use a handheld meter so I can’t speak to that.
Wide and shallow. Can’t do it with crop. On the other hand, I am planning on taking my M50 with my grandfathers Zeiss 50 2.0 from his Contax Rangefinder. The adapters are ordered. Shooting with his lens on digital has been a dream for years and mirrorless cameras have made it possible. I will bring a 22mm along just in case. I’m really going to try and leave the R6m2 and 5DM3s at home. Wish me luck.
Not as fast as the 29mm F0.8 Voigtlander though.
There is the Kamlan 28mm 1.4 since some years ago. Much cheaper and quite good as well
Been using the thypoch on my XT-5 and my Xpro2 for about a month now. Took it with me and it was the primary lens i had on my cameras for the majority of the trip. The rendering is beautiful and monochrome images come out amazing. For the wet days i used the viltrox 27 1.2 due to the weathersealing, but as soon as it cleared up, back to the thypoch. I love this lens and the only downside i see is the lack of exif contacts. I got it for $480 on a B&H sale so the price was fine.
I got the Voigtlander 27mm and after spending time getting comfortable with manual focus it's practically become my default! Such a pleasure to have a compact lens like that for my x-t30 for running around town. 27mm is not the perfect focal length for me but I already have great options for the focal lengths I use the most, so I'm very happy to have it. I had never heard of Thypoch before but the images you made with it look great.
That Voigtlander 27mm is such a joy to use. And thank you!
Compare the new matrix movie image with the original matrix trilogy image and tell me which one looks better... The new one looks kinda disgusting to me, I can see all the little wrinkles on the actors faces, everything else is out of focus, why would anyone think that is a good thing? For me, people tend to compensate the lack in "quality image" with excess of "image quality", if you know what I mean.
People want max resolution to afterwards just complain about that clinical look, which lead them to slap a mist filter on it... and then go on the internet to complain their images are all blooming hard. . I mean, jokes aside, just look some of the all time favorite movies from the 90's, 00's, or even older, like the Matrix, Gladiator, etc. It always comes back to tone, color, composition and storytelling. Resolution is just a tool, not the goal. Most movies today are shot in 4K and delivered in 2K to be watched, which equates to being about a 4 megapixel image. And somehow 26 megapixels is not enough? . The one thing i find useful in high MP count is if I want to crop a lot, but it's usually not ever that agressive, just trimming the image a bit. I wouldn't want to shoot everything at 100 MP with a super clinical lens just in case i want to crop it to 10 MP later. So, yeah, 24~26 MP is the sweet spot.
Sometimes it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Not impossible. Just not easy. And so we may also have to learn to part ways with old relationship habits as well. It’s all coming full circle. And there is no fine lines that separate one area from the next. Poor habits find their way into our lives and spread like a disease often changing perceptions of the way we see ourselves and others see us. And so this is both important as a topic on camera and off camera. 🎥 ❤
Dropping gems! 🙌
Never yet heard of Thypoch as a lens manufacturer! Are they new?
New-ish! I believe their parent company is a respected film/cinema lens developer
@@doriyancoleman Thanks for the info!
The big problem that this lens solves is the problem of autofocus. It being a manual lens and all...
Have you tried the Viltrox 27mm 1.2? It’s incredible imo. It’s so sharp! I don’t own it anymore because it wasn’t what I was looking for (the 33 1.4 was more my thing), but with my short time owning it, it impressed me a lot!
I haven’t tried out the Viltrox, but my guy Dee Rosa has and I recall him enjoying it!
I guess the big problem is fuji has no expensive manual focus lenses?🤣
Viltrox’s 27 f1.2 is awesome
I’ve heard!
The Laowa Argus 25mm f/0.95 (Fuji X-mount and others) weighs a ton and doesn't have a focusing tab. It does have an aperture ring de-clicking option. The build quality and image rendering are superb. I don't care about the lack of electrical contacts. It is a 25mm rather than 27mm, but crazy not to include it in considerations. I use it a lot.
I only talk in detail about stuff that I’ve used
is this 35mm vs 50mm on fullframe?
Yes it is
I like the look of and the size of the voigtlander.
In my opinion, Voigtlander has yet to miss on Fuji X. The 23mm f/1.2, 27mm f/2 and 35mm f/0.9 are all fantastic.
I think the 27mm F1.2 from Viltrox already solved this problem. Great video though!
There's also plenty of fast Chinese manual 25mm lenses that are way cheaper than this that would be just as sharp and good looking as long as you put the lens hood on them (their only real drawback is flaring issues).
for me apsc is all about the size and weight. carrying a bunch of glass that covers full frame and use only a central part doesn’t really makes sense to me. full frame weight and size, but smaller sensor. the worst of both worlds.
That's fair. I would love for third parties (and Fuji for that matter) to prioritize small, pancake-ish, f/2 lenses for the system.
Using lens that covers full frame on APS-C makes plenty of sense as long as it'll result in a focal length you want, in a form factor that you desire in my opinion. I got a TTArtisan 50mm f/2 (somewhat) pancake lens which translate 75mm (77 to be precise) in full frame terms, this is especially attractive to me as it preserve the APS-C appeal of compactness while offering something native APS-C lens doesn't have currently. I suppose it really only make sense if the lens is compact, but if someone doesn't mind the size, there's nothing really wrong about using only the central part of the lens.
@@shira_yone I’m not saying you cannot use it. you just need to carry more weight then you have to since it has larger and heavier glass elements to cover bigger sensor area. that particular part doesn’t makes sense to me, but to each their own
@@artemkanaki9274 it really depends but in the case of budget manual lenses especially since there are many cases of corners flaws, putting them on a smaller sensor will then hide those imperfection while retaining central sharpness. This will significantly improve the value of those lenses that would be subpar at best on full frame sensor, but will be an over performer on smaller sensors. This applies to vintage lenses as well. Hence why it makes sense that having more glass than you need is generally not that bad of an idea. If the result is like this thypoch lens where it's massive and there's not much corners imperfection need hiding to begin with, then I can see it understandably not making much sense.
Still too long for my taste, especially with the hood. Looks funny. The native Voigtländer x have the prefect size.
That’s fair. I’m hoping Voigtlander or Thypoch comes to the rescue with a fast 18mm lens, preferably pancake.
Thanks for the great review Doriyan! I've been shooting with Fuji's 27mm a lot but also thinking of getting Voigtlander for better/easier zone focusing on the streets, but your video added this guy to the equation. Oh boy :)
You can’t go wrong with either! Voigtlander 27mm is ultra compact and a true “character” lens.
Voigtlander 28mm f/2.0 Ultron Vintage Aspherical VM Lens Type II solves the problem for fujifilm, plus its a lot smaller.
I’d love if Thypoch or Voigtlander made a 18mm f/2 next.
@@doriyancoleman Voigtlanders 18mm f2.8 is really nice, I don't know if you have seen it?
Sticking with my Voigtlander 27/40mm pancake, that’s a ridiculous lens and so small this would need to be that much better for me to take it off the xe1 maybe the XT5 but good luck getting the 18mm 1.4 off that body lol
The Voigtlander 27mm f/2 is an awesome lens. Wish they would carry over their design philosophy from the M-mount lenses
@@doriyancolemanI hear that like weather sealing would be nice but when I’m using it and looking at the images I’m not really thinking about how the build quality compares with leica
When I see everything is in focus I realize the only workable way for these is having a sunny day, f16, focus from 1.5m or 2 to infinity. I love third parties making manual bulky lenses, but I miss AF pancake lenses for the system. Even if they are 2.5 or f2.8… we are in APSC for compactness. I’m not talking about 27mm, that we have a couple of options (three, if we take into account the Fujinon 27mm mark I).. but other focal ranges. Good video, as usual!!
I 100% agree. If the large, “pro” lenses sustain the system and make Fuji money, by all means continue. However, more pancake and compact lenses are definitely in order. Thanks!
👍✌️
Much love!
Idk these prices don't make much sense with Fuji. Wonderful alternative for Leicas and Leica & Voigtländer lenses, but why should I pay so much Money for a MF lens with x mount? The floating lens element is dope and useful for Leica, but for Fuji? Eh, not much. If they would drop the prices, yes. At this price the Viltrox 27mm is a much better purchase both in terms of Image quality and build quality
That’s fair. Thanks for watching!
There is an audience that likes shooting manual on fuji systems. I understand the price discrepancy but people have paid more for L mount manual lens just to shoot it again on fuji.
Is Viltrox 27 1.4 ?
@@shuailuo8637 it is f/1.2!
HE DROPPED LETS GOOOOO!!!!
Out here! 🫡💯
Wooooohhh
First! I’m a fan of the electrical contacts from Voigt. I don’t know if I can go to another manual focus lens without it. Other options are the 27mm f1.2 from Viltrox. Biggest con is the weight. Also the TT Artisans 27mm f/2.8. I hear the biggest thing is the vignetting wide open.
Yo! The electrical contacts from Voigtlander are lovely indeed.
I like a vignette, from reviews it's longitudinal CA is the achilles heel. I've the lens on z mount and miss the exif but it's so new that I haven't done much post.
👏👏👏
