Nice to see you Doriyan. I agree with you on the size, I replaced my XF35 f/2 for the XF33 f/1.4 (much larger but I don’t regret it), for wide shots on my X-T4 I still use the XF16 f/2.8 and I’m more than happy with the results. Be well and stay safe.
thank you! yeah the size definitely isn’t a dealbreaker, but i can see why it would (and has) deterred a lot of people. still need to try that 16mm 2.8 myself. you take care as well!
OMG I laughed out loud at the "if your only flaw is some dark and handsome dude..." line hahahahah. As a fellow lover of this lens, I concur with everything you said, including the size. Hoping a refresh of the fujicrons is in store one day! But in the meantime, these 1.4 primes are so nice. I'll say... the 23 1.4 WR is, to me, even a little better. (and a tiny bit bigger too) That one has supplanted the 18/33 for me lately.
Great job. Enjoyed it. In fact I hit the bell. I don't want to miss any. And, I agree with you. I am not currently in the market because I just got a similar lens from Viltrox. The 23mm f/1.4. Really great chunk of glass. (and cheap) Oh, and I almost forgot, your pacing is PERFECT. Keep them rolling.
thank you! viltrox has made some great lenses for the mount, and that 23mm is one i have to try out (favorite focal length). thanks again for the kind words! 🙏🏾
I totally understand your point on size. Being seen as non-threatening on the street means not looking like a pro-level shooter which can make people uncomfortable at one end and possibly hostile in some social situations. To that end, I did go for the 18mm f/2 for the size. On the street, I'm at f/5.6 to f/11 most of the time, so it works for me. Your images look great and I know that the new f/1.4 beats the old f/2 lens optically and operationally, but I wish to remain stealthy, so I'll accept the "limitations" of my lens.
i see where you’re coming from. personally, i don’t think plays anywhere near as much as a role as people think. i’ve used larger cameras and lenses on the street throughout the years (even just used GFX for a bit), small cameras, and have always an overall great experience. to me, demeanor & how you move reign supreme. still, i can’t discount the lightness factor and preferences 🤝 thanks for the compliment!
Just discovered your channel. Appreciated this video - both the content and style resonated. One RUclips tip - if you start your timestamps at 00:00, RUclips will add chapters into the actual player, making it easier for people to jump through the video. Currently you're starting at the first "content" (e.g. "0:28 - Image Quality" in the description), but if you add "00:00 - Introduction" that should force RUclips to behave better. You might also need "00:28" rather than "0:28" - I'm not 100% on that. Thanks again for the content and keep up the great work :)
I have the 18 mm 1.4 and it’s a gem! I liked it so much that I bought the 33 mm and the 23. The linear motors really make focusing zippy! I switch out lenses for different subjects and it keeps my creative energy going. The original 56 1.2 has new life to it since I got the XT5!
@@doriyancoleman Ever since the XT5, I pulled the 56, 1.2 off the shelf and never looked back! It had been sitting on my shelf for years, for the slow auto focusing. It’s one of my favorite lenses now, I suggest you find an old copy somewhere, because I like the image better than the new version, which is to clinical!
Great vid! You Touched on my deciding factor which is size. I’m gonna go with the older F2. Optics are great on this but I Wish they would make a mark II pancake with WR and better optics. Rented an f2 and i loved taking my xt2 out. Felt so refreshing to have something almost pocketable i didn’t have to throw in a backpack.
Thanks! Size plays a huge factor! There’s days where I prefer the F2 as well. Down the line I hope a MK II version comes along as well; pancake lenses with great optics have a lot of utility. Glad you had that experience 🙏🏾
Great video Doriyan. I have no issue with the size. Compared to the Viltrox 27mm which I love, this 18mm is on my list. Currently using the F2 version which is a wonderful Lens. Great video and images. Mike
@@doriyancoleman Thanks Doriyan. I have been shooting with the F2 today and to be honest, it is a fantastic Lens. When you focus on what a Len’s is supposed to do, deliver great images - the Xf18mm F2 wins, I love it. A wide angle Len’s is designed to tell stories and connect layers, not isolate, that’s for telephoto. So my Aperture is f8-11 with a fast shutter speed. This lens delivers. The 18mm 1.4 is stellar and I imagine for low light would be fantastic. Great work from sir.
I had both the 18mm F2 and this one. I grab the 18mm F1.4 for astrophotography and its sharpness was spectacular. So many star fields. But wide focal length is not my interest. For street and everyday photography, I carry both the 35mm and 50mm F2.
I prefer the F2 much more for it's vintage vibes and pocketable size. In print it's more pleasing to look at over time. Soul over sharpness any day of the week.
Great video, lovely compositions and colours, really enjoyed it :) have you ever tried any of the Samyang/Rokinon manual focus lenses for Fuji? If you get a chance, they can be found for for fairly cheap, like the 12mm f2, 21mm f1.4 (my favourite), 35mm f1.2, 50mm f1.2 etc.
Oh man - I use the 18mm 2.0 the most for street, but the 18mm 1.4 looks so enticing. I think the size would be too intimating for me since I prefer the small for factor of the T30 ii I use with the small 18mm 2.0. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Btw I make short films, I’ve just filmed one about a young painter in Sweden, I’d greatly appreciate it if you took a look Doriyan, thank you! :)
thanks! the b-roll was all regular Astia with a +2 color boost i believe. the images were a wide range of film simulations that come with the cameras. i don’t use any recipes!
That’s tough. If we’re comparing the F2 versions, I think the 23mm is the better quality lens. However, the 18mm f2 allows for my favorite focal length. If we’re comparing the 1.4’s, definitely the 18mm 1.4. Fuji’s best 1st party lens IMO
I just sold this lens today. I owned it for a year and didn't really use it much. Too wide for me. I shoot more 35mm - 135mm. Beautiful sharp lens but not for me. I wouldn't mind a 18mm F2 or 18mm 2.8 not too expensive just to use it now and then. Hopefully some 3rd party manufacturer comes out with one.
@@doriyancoleman Idk why it doesn't exist yet? The 18 F2 is like 10 years old now. It's time. I'm waiting on getting an 18 1.4 for a good price. But if an F2 comes out? I'm looking at this lens and thanks so much for the review. Your fountain pic is outstanding!
