  • Is the Fujifilm XF 18mm f1.4 the best Fuji lens ever made? In this video, I review the Fuji 18mm f1.4 after having used it for wedding photography, portrait photography, documenting my family, and video work. I also compare the Fujifilm 18mm f1.4 to the 16mm 1.4, the 18mm f2, and the 23mm 1.4. If you're considering getting a wide angle prime for your Fujifilm camera, this video is a must watch! Hey! recently picked this one up. Quick question... I noticed that it sounds like something moves inside the lens when you move it before attaching it to the camera. is this normal? do you know why? thanks!

    Best review of this lens Reggie. Answered all my questions regarding to wedding photography especially the people distortion part which is a bug bear for me with the 16mm 1.4. I bought the Viltrox 23mm and have the Fuji 33mm. I'm thinking I probably won't use he 23mm much once I get the 18mm lens. Now I'm wondering if I should get the 50mm 1.0 to replace my Viltrox 56mm 1.4. My Fuji 1.2 died and it's such a fragile lens so even though I love the output, just not going back there until they update it.

    Big thank you Reggie, really enjoyed your review, tasty pro level presentation with views, interesting topics with your own personal touch. I love sharp lenses with great shallow depth of field. I shoot winter sports, action sports in all types of conditions and locations from snow to water to dusty deserts with long focal lengths. But when i have the chance I love that perspective of a 16mm f1.4 and the 56mm f1.2 for close ups. It adds atmosphere for the viewer that allows people to recognise the back ground which can be :"bokeh blastered" I'll put my name on that word Heh or slightly distorted. When I shoot I want my audience to feel the closeness of the action hence getting in tight it allows the thrill to nearly touch you. I'm from a videographer back ground hence this obsession to be close to the action. I moved to the fuji family 5 years ago love the tactile feel and film sims i have fun taking weddings portraits and travel with my Fuji gear.. Ps I still have my Nikon gear but that's for Sports only..I think you might know why. Cheers from down under.

    The 18mm fl (28mm in FF) is also my favorite angle of view back in Nikon and now in Fujifilm. I currently use the f2 version which pairs perfectly with the X-E4 as an everyday carry. The flare is amazing too as it actually glows yellow for some reason. This 1.4 version looks amazing which would be perfect if I was still shooting professionally. But since my priorities have changed, the f2 version works really well. I do hope Fujifilm updates it too with weather resistance and maybe better AF. Regarding the "snapshot" reputation for this angle of view, I believe it's actually what makes it better. It makes photos feel relatable and engaging.

      @@Reggiebphoto I found out the focal length fits better for me as with the 16 1.4. sometimes I thought it's a bit too wide. Distortion is really well controlled. And the image quality and sharpness is outstanding. You can crop in a lot without problems. And the with the linear motor the af is a lot faster as with the 16 1.4. Then the choice is about those 3 mm difference in focal range. And there are some 13 and 12 mm as well What about the new 23 mm 1.4 ? it is probably similar to the 18 int terms of quality. But probably to narrow in certain situation.

    Thank you for making this. I was hesitating with swapping some gear. Was leaning to just get the 33mm because on the 18-55mm I sold, I didn’t really like the 18 oddly perhaps.
    On your recommendation I got the 18mm f1.4 wr used and it’s my favorite for now, especially with my toddler. I have the f2 23mm, 35, and 50, and the 16-80f4 (like heavy), and though nice the 35 stood out. So I expected that the 33mm f1.4 was gonna be my new goto. But no, I love having that too for indoor/portrait but for being with my toddler or others, the 18 has been a delight (and on the x-t5 40mp you can crop in quite a bit if you feel your composition is close but not quite right)

    Once again, you killed it with the production. 18 1.4 is probably the best lens out on the X mount . I currently own all 3 of the new 1.4s and it's the most fun to use out of the 3 for the challenging factor. As you say , it really does push you as a photographer and fills in that gap that I needed for replacing the 28 1.8G lens . I also agree that the 23 1.4 can be redundant in the kit if you already own the X100V .

    hey - wonderful review, been looking at XF16-55mm f2.8 as a travel lens.... wonder if you've used that and how would you compare with XF 18mm 1.4? The new 23mm f/1.4 is excellent and it's the most versatile lens like it was before! I'm seeing a new wave for the lens xf 18mm f/1.4, but this focal length is much closer to the focal length 16 than the 23... Maybe Fujifilm will launch another focal length not so wide like 20 to see another wave for this focal length! :-)

  • @streetzine
    @streetzine 2 года назад +1

    I understand linear motor is the way forward but gosh I wished Fujifilm can make a proper 18mm F2 manual lens with focal distance and focus tab. Clutch focus is cool but focus by wire takes away from one thing I like to do is refocusing in long exposure shots. Yeah I can get an adapter but would be better to get a native build with exif contacts. Maybe I can wish for something like that on the next gen of x100 serie cameras since Fujifilm is pretty bold with cameras like the xpro3? I think it would satisfy most documentary/street style shooters.

      @@Reggiebphoto haha thanks for the response Reggie as I to agree with your philosophy and it sure does sound like Leica cameras would be a good fit. Truth is I love the Fujifilm ecosystem and the convenience of their film sims for personal documentation so this just sparks a good convo. Especially with the idea that they are pushing for higher megapixel cameras gives even more interest for cropping as you would do on a Leica Q2. Although one can argue why not opt for the gfx for cleaner output to crop from especially at higher iso (simply size and cost). Anyways it's only wishful thinking as I'm sure you've gave it some thought knowing you've shot on the 35mm mitakon for personal work. To reiterate I'll continue to keep shooting regardless especially on my x100v but it does make me excited to think about what direction Fujifilm is moving towards and how others want to see improvements.
      Anyways aside from that, rad video sharing your thoughts on the idea why you won't be upgrading the 23mm ii as it totally makes sense. Really the 18mm 1.4 is a marvel of a lens that ticks so many boxes considering video, sharpness, character, versatility, and speed. Perfect to both personal and working photographer. Can I ask where you got your inspiration for you intro? Reminds me a lot of the ballislife intro with a montage to follow, big fan. Definitely gets you hyped!
