Yours is the best description of the merits of the 40mm lens I've heard. I've used it since I got my Olympus OM 40mm f2 back in my film days. Well done.
What a well put together video. Really appreciate the examples you gave at the top. Man, some really great photos you shared and the ones that were particularly successful illustrated the point you were making: they had deep environmental focus and they succeeded because you put together a composition. The result is so pleasing. Going to watch your other videos now.
I love the 40mm in my old Canon. The light comes super nice and is actually very good for portraits. Very flattering. I think there’s extreme love for bokeh which I understand but when you’re going around with a pancake lens you will take much more pictures that with other lenses, just because is easier to handle. So yes, 27mm in APC is a great combo!
I have always been interested in the science of a "normal lens" , its pretty interesting if you look it up on wiki this focal length is mathematically related to the radius of a camera sensor dimensions and for FF 43.5 is the magic number related to the size of the image circle. Pentax actually makes this focal length
i have a close friend that is a former fashion shooter (made some big money doing that) that recently bought the same setup. He says that 40mm is probably his favorite focal length. I am currently working with a X-Pro2 and XF 35mm f2 for my setup as I try late in life (and after decades with zooms and a decade as a small town newspaper shooter) to emulate the first photographer that inspired me, the great Henri Cartier-Bresson. This was an enjoyable video. Thanks. It gives me an idea of why my friend prefers the 40mm FOV.
Excellent upload. I'm coming from the opposite angle, being a 28mm guy. I absolutely love that focal length for street, as well as 35mm. I've never really got used to 50mm, although strangely, I do love 85mm and 135mm. So 40mm and 50mm, are the two mid focal outliers. Having watched this video, I'm now thinking of getting that 40mm pancake, and giving it a whirl,… and my focal length journey will be complete. Giving Thanks.
that’s interesting! i’d have to say we have in common that 50 probably gets the least love in my street photography as well. give a 40mm pancake a shot! especially if you shoot fuji, i’ve seen the 27mm mk i for dirt cheap. take care!
Thanks for the video. A normal lens is defined as having a focal length close to the hypotenuse of the image format. For a camera that produces a 24x36mm image, the hypotenuse is 43.3mm. For me, the 40 and 45mm lenses was close enough to the hypotenuse to be considered normal lenses. The 50 and 55mm were too telephoto for me. The 35mm was too wide for me. For me, the fixed 40mm f/1.7 lens on the Canon Canonet QL17 G-III 35mm rangefinder was the perfect normal lens for street photography. For me, the Panasonic 20mm (40mm equivalent) f/1.7 lens was the perfect normal lens for street photography when used on a micro 4/3 digital camera.
Excellent video. This field of view feels very natural to my eye and how I see the wide. What I find amazing is how effortless I can switch from a Portrait to a scene with deep layers and a Wide Angle Frame. The XF 27mm has some optical magic going on. 40mn Photography is gathering pace judging by the number of interesting videos and articles I have come across 👍🏽
A great way to describe the 40mm lens. I did event photography including weddings for a number of years and while i can't say it's any thing like steet photography because at an event people have expectations of being photographed, many of the same focal lengths are used, you have to capture the interaction of the guests at times with their knowledge and other times without, you have to be aware of how light and shadows influence a scene and how to use it to your advantage, and you still have to make people comfortable with what you're doing. On Monday of this coming week i will travel to the Eastern Shores of Virginia, i will be staying on Chincoteague Island to photograph the wild life and different sea birds, the island is a watermans community and one of my cameras will be a Nikon ZF with a variety of prime lens, one being a Voightlander 40mm f1.2. This is the first time I will be using both the camera and lens so it should be an interesting trip.
Definitely agree that many of the same focal lengths are used. Even when doing photojournalist/documentary work myself, I carry in a similar approach to when I'm doing street photography. Hope you had fun on your trip!
40mm and 40th Birthday! Conspiracy? Great video bud, I get close to 40mm with my 1.33 crop it comes out to 37.24mm field of view with the 28mm and I enjoy it as well.
man i am 26 😂 40mm is that weird one where it’s hard to find a lens that hits it on the dot sometimes, but the neighborhood of it in general is definitely fun to use!
I like the concept of 43mm being the ‘true normal’ as it’s the diagonal of the 24mm x 36mm frame. Pentax have their 43mm f1.9 which is also a pancake lens. Great lens
I bought the xe4 and the guy at my local camera store threw the lens in for free😃…. The lens sat on the shelf off and on for the first couple of months. A month ago I put the lens on and it’s been on there ever since. I’ve discovered while watching reviews on items can be insightful it doesn’t replace the hands on usage.. There is something magical about this lens. In my opinion.
Very interesting perspective! Currently I'm working with only the 27mm on the Fuji and loving it. There are SOME limitations as you said but I'm doing what I did in past, work with the limitations to produce the best. Thanks for this video!
I m in love with my sigma 30mm f1.4, it's preety close to 27mm, yet it's perfectly sharp from 1.8 / 2.0 . It gives you amazing compression when needed. Good content! Keep it up! :)
Very interesting video and great images. 40 mm is my favourite focal length since my Minolta CLE days in the 80:ies. I bought my first 35 mm lens in 2020.
I've been making 40mm for the last months and felt like on the edge of wide. Recently I took 35mm lens and was shocked with the difference. 35 is so much wider than 40, that you need to come right to people faces, and this is very distracting and inconvenient. Yes, 35 is mostly better for a landscapes or architechture, but if you make street photography particularly with people, and you are finding the edge where you didn't brake the stealth, keeping the observer style, 40 is the choice.
I have a Voightlander 40mm f/2 on my full frame Nikon DSLR and the 27mm on my Fujis. I often vacillate trying to decide between the FF 35mm or 50mm (23mm, 35mm on Fuji), so the 40mm splits the difference and can do the work of either with a bit of movement. One neat thing that the Fujifilm 27mm did for me was that even wide open, you are just not going to get that selective focus pop, so I learned to embrace f/8 and compose for deep focus. With my f/1.4 lenses, I tend to shoot at or near full aperture because, well, it's there. My 27mm images look different than my 23mm and 35mm images and that can be good.
I bought the 40mm f/2 to use with my z6 II for street photography. I've since added the 28mm. I really like my 40mm. Nikon's 40mm z lens is very under rated. It is a very sharp lens. It has a close focusing distance. It looks great in black and white. It's one of my favorite lenses to use.
As a side note, Fuji has compact yet super sharp 16mm 2.8, 18mm 2.0, 23mm 2.0, 27mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0 & 50mm 2.0. That is quite a feat. As far as streets are concerned, fuji got it covered.
Been a longtime user of the Canon QL17 Giii (40mm, f1.7). Taking up photography after nearly 20 years with an APS-C digital body, the Pentax-m 28mm f2.8 lens that I forgot to get rid of has taken on a whole new life with its equivalent length of 42mm, which I find to be 'just right' for this kinda stuff.
kinda makes you wish that the manufactures put more time into “premium” 40mm equivs. not crazy expensive, but better than average. typically only 35 and 50 get that respect
40mm is such a great focal length. That lens used to be my favourite, also due to how small and incredibly sharp it is. But on RF mounts with the adapter it gets a little bulkier, and now that I got introduced to the RF 35mm with its f/1.8 aperture, compact size, and image stabilisation, the 40mm starts to loose a bit of its shine. It still love it though. It just gets a bit hard choosing between the two at times.
ahhh i see. back when i was tossing around the idea of using canon, their 35mm 1.8 had my attention. glad it’s working for you! 35mm is absolutely my favorite focal length as well, and because like you said it and others like 28 and 50 lenses usually get all of the favors quality-wise, 40mm lenses often get left behind
@@doriyancoleman The Canon EF one is sadly discontinued now, so I'll hold on to my copy foreverrrrr. It's very good for close-up portraits too, close to 35mm but distorting just enough less that the face looks very natural while still retaining more context than with a 50mm.
EyE agree. My usual street shooting setup is my X-E2 & the 2nd. Edition aperture ringed Fujinon 27mm pancake. Check out the fixed lenses of most cameras before the interchangeable DSLR revolution of the late 50s/early 60s and you’ll find that they all had lenses in the 40 -43mm. range.
Well done. I loved the 40mm f2 I had on my Nikon F3 so often. I do shoot a X100 and am considering the 27mm for my Fuji bodies due to many of the things you mentioned here. While the quality isn’t as good, don’t for get the 7atrisans 18mm body cap lens 😎
I shot with a Canon Rebel Xs and the 18-55mm kit lens from 2008 until the shutter died in 2019. Since then I've bought a 7D and a 5D Mark II. I needed an EF lens for the 5D Mark II, so I went with the very affordable 40mm f/2.8, it's more than capable and I get excellent results with it.
Great video, really insightful the dragon ball edit killed me lmao I want to try using a 40mm for photography as I've only ever used it for video work!
Right w ya. Excited, defied reviews and connected the not quite like the prior trinity Olympus Pro prime lenses: OM Systems new 20mm/40mm equivalent on my Pana Gx8 for the one lens street carry. Kinda da “Goldie Locks” lens as you so described.
I'm a big fan of 35mm.I'm also on the Sony system and I love Zeiss rendering. I picked up a used 40mm Batis because it's smaller, lighter, and has more consistent quality control than the Sony Zeiss 35/1.4. I'm still adjusting to it. Sometimes I think it feels more like a 50 than a 35. I don't know if it's psycholoical, but it feels different to the 35. I'm going to try and implement the advice from your other video about using 1 camera / 1 lens. Despite my FOMO, I figure I could humble myself and try it for a month and see what happens.
i see where you’re coming from. based on your last couple messages i think you’d really benefit from putting the others to the side and trying them one at a time. the “fomo” goes away after like three weeks i promise 😂 i exclusively used the 35mm f2 from fuji for 6-7 months, before a year+ long bout with the xh1 + 23mm f2 and the x100v. you can do it too! 🙏🏾
Thank you for covering this topic. I’ve had conversations with other photographers about the 40 mm. Seems we skirt around it with the 35 and 50. One of these days. 🖖
@@doriyancoleman I was thinking it would be nice if they had a large format version of the X100V and a 24 mm equivalent lens. This would be great for nature Images.
Great video, straight forward and to the point. I have a hate love relationship with the 27mm (40) I love its size and image quality, I hate its AF. But it is one of two lenses I use with my XE3. The other being one of my favourite Fuji Lens, and the cheapest XC15-45. Much better AF, in fact it is the one I use the most with the XE3. Cheers from Ireland.
the af is definitely spotty. it wasn’t until i paired it with the x-t30 ii that it became both quick and reliable, though i wouldn’t say it’s “bad”. x-e3 is an excellent camera. cheers!
man o man gimme a break : 28, 35, 50 and now 40 !… 🥸 I have the xf 27 (40 full frame) mk1 and its a fine lens. I dont know if my desert island lens is a 35 or a 40...certainly a gateway toward 50 for me as I am more a wide person (whatever that means)…
😂 gotta cover all the ranges for my people! and makes sense, we all have our preferences. at this point in my life i’d say mine would be a 35mm prime (or 23mm for aps-c)
40mm lenses are not all light pancake lenses. My Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 (E mount) is a fairly heavy lens at 420g but until (if) Voigtlander ever make a smaller f1.4 or f2 40mm, it is my go to street photography lens. I agree about the 40mm street photography perspective as it is just right for me. Not too wide or too long and you can step back to include more of the scene or play with the depth of field to isolate subjects.
I was really leaning into this one but the 2.8 is kinda making me think for the 24mm or the 35mm on fuji. I have the 16 2.8 and the xs20, but at night it seems like it is hard to get iso right with out looking grainy. What do you think, go for it or not? Mostly wanna do street but some portrait. Try to limit lenses as well for travel.
personally 40mm is the longest focal length i like, and it’s quite different from 50mm. not a financial advisor 🤓 but i’d say try it out and embrace the grain!
sup! optically both are excellent, so what i’d say is: if you’d like to capture a bit more environment / want a wider perspective, 23mm if you would like a bit more reach and compression, 35mm 💪🏾
@@doriyancoleman Yeah I generally shoot landscapes and have a 10-24 plus the 27 Pancake so thinking the 35mm will allow me to get some different type of shots (closeups) and expand my experience with Street without having to get up in peoples faces so much lol...cheers mate
Great video. Thank you. Very informative. Do have a specific or favorite lens you would recommend for my Canon APS-C DSLR (EOS 90D) to capture the 40mm best?
i appreciate that 🙏🏾 canon’s crop factor for aps-c is roughly 1.6, so i’d steer you towards researching their 24mm 2.8. can’t say it’s a favorite, (never shot canon) but it seems to be their 40mm go-to.
Nitpicking here, but actually, 27mm on APSC looks like 27mm on full frame, when cropped in by 1.6x - it doesn't look like 40mm. Only 40mm looks like 40mm - regardless the sensor size behind it. Equivalency is a myth. The only equivalent thing true for both 27mm on APSC and 40mm on 135 format is the angle of view.
That 2.8 is just not ideal or viable even for most real street photography, specially in low light in my opinion. But hey, If it works for some people, i guess it can't be that bad.
I’ve been rocking 40mm and 85mm primes when doing street. It’s been working for me.
glad to hear that!
40mm is where it’s at! I’ve used 40 and 43mm lenses from Pentax for ages. For many folks it might seem like a strange feeling length at first use. It feels like it’s too wide to be standard, but then too standard to be wide. I’ve met many people who get thrown off and don’t give it a chance. Once you get the hang of it, it’s absolutely phenomenal! It really is a Jack of most all trades! I’ve been using the 27mm (40ish) Fuji lens for a while now and absolutely love the thing.

For a camera that produces a 24x36mm image, the hypotenuse is 43.3mm. For me, the 40 and 45mm lenses was close enough to the hypotenuse to be considered normal lenses. The 50 and 55mm were too telephoto for me. The 35mm was too wide for me.

Well done. I loved the 40mm f2 I had on my Nikon F3 so often. I do shoot a X100 and am considering the 27mm for my Fuji bodies due to many of the things you mentioned here.
While the quality isn’t as good, don’t for get the 7atrisans 18mm body cap lens 😎
thank you! 27mm mark i can be found for pretty cheap on the used market.
just recently began using ttartisan’s 23mm, but 7artisan is on my list!
11 years is some great use! and yeah pancake lenses can make a great budget option for anybody’s kit
Great video, really insightful the dragon ball edit killed me lmao I want to try using a 40mm for photography as I've only ever used it for video work!
gogeta > vegito 😂
give it a shot! you might like it
Great scriptwriting! Kudos!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤝
Right w ya. Excited, defied reviews and connected the not quite like the prior trinity Olympus Pro prime lenses: OM Systems new 20mm/40mm equivalent on my Pana Gx8 for the one lens street carry. Kinda da “Goldie Locks” lens as you so described.
olympus and panasonic are some brands i need to try out; those gx bodies are always so highly spoken of. 40 needs more love!
@@doriyancoleman …yah, I’m a fan about IBIS and WR otherwise I’d be all about Fuji FF cameras and colors.
Despite my FOMO, I figure I could humble myself and try it for a month and see what happens.
i see where you’re coming from. based on your last couple messages i think you’d really benefit from putting the others to the side and trying them one at a time.
the “fomo” goes away after like three weeks i promise 😂
i exclusively used the 35mm f2 from fuji for 6-7 months, before a year+ long bout with the xh1 + 23mm f2 and the x100v. you can do it too! 🙏🏾
I didn’t really like using the lens. But the canon EF 40mm was one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. At all apertures.
Yeah, sometimes focal lengths don’t resonate. That’s some impressive sharpness!
Great video and insight!
thank you andrew!
While I only shoot 35 because of my Fuji x100t, I still prefer 50mm, fun video!
maybe the next x100 body will feature a built in 50mm equivalent 👀 nah who knows. thanks!
@@doriyancoleman there is an adapter to make it 50mm but that's more bulk 😔
Funny this popped up in me feed. I was just in CLE with my Ricoh griii and griiix-a 28 and 40.
two cameras i’ve always wanted to try!
Thank you for covering this topic. I’ve had conversations with other photographers about the 40 mm. Seems we skirt around it with the 35 and 50. One of these days. 🖖
you’re welcome 🤝 50mm 3.5 on GFX (40mm equiv.) is something everybody needs to experience at least once
@@doriyancoleman
I was thinking it would be nice if they had a large format version of the X100V and a 24 mm equivalent lens.
This would be great for nature Images.
I am trying to use a 28mm f/2.8 on my ASP-C Z50, which translates to a 42mm f/2.8 and see if I like it. So far, so good.
stick to it! 💪🏾
Cheers from Ireland.
the af is definitely spotty. it wasn’t until i paired it with the x-t30 ii that it became both quick and reliable, though i wouldn’t say it’s “bad”. x-e3 is an excellent camera. cheers!
You definately have a way with words, and backning it up with some great imagery. I’m glad @deerosa pointed me in your direction.
dee’s a great guy! thank you for watching 🙏🏾
I have my Panasonic 20mm f1.7 (40mm equiv) on my GM1 right now. Thanks. toronto canada
Great lens! Take care
The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 rocks on MFT. 👍
good to know, i’d like to try the panasonic system someday
man o man gimme a break : 28, 35, 50 and now 40 !… 🥸 I have the xf 27 (40 full frame) mk1 and its a fine lens.
I like that lens. I would love to have the rangefocus marks tho. U got tips on using maual focus on a lense without rangefocus marks?
unfortunately i don’t have any tips. i know most modern cameras have some kind of digital manual focus assist, but i’m not a huge fan of that
40mm lenses are not all light pancake lenses. Not too wide or too long and you can step back to include more of the scene or play with the depth of field to isolate subjects.
i didn’t say they are
I was really leaning into this one but the 2.8 is kinda making me think for the 24mm or the 35mm on fuji.
Yes sir I will jump on it. Also thanks for the quick reply! Subbing now :)
Hey mate, I have the 27mm (40) and have been thinking of getting either a 23 or 35mm fujicron to expand the kit, what would you suggest out of those 2
sup! optically both are excellent, so what i’d say is:
if you’d like to capture a bit more environment / want a wider perspective, 23mm
if you would like a bit more reach and compression, 35mm 💪🏾
@@doriyancoleman Yeah I generally shoot landscapes and have a 10-24 plus the 27 Pancake so thinking the 35mm will allow me to get some different type of shots (closeups) and expand my experience with Street without having to get up in peoples faces so much lol...cheers mate
If I don’t have my Fuji X30 with me, I use my Z6 with the 40mm f2 for street
great combo, really liked the z6 when i had it. i always say that if i ever go back to full frame slr-style bodies, it’d be with Nikon.
Great video. Thank you. Very informative. Do have a specific or favorite lens you would recommend for my Canon APS-C DSLR (EOS 90D) to capture the 40mm best?
i appreciate that 🙏🏾
canon’s crop factor for aps-c is roughly 1.6, so i’d steer you towards researching their 24mm 2.8.
can’t say it’s a favorite, (never shot canon) but it seems to be their 40mm go-to.
@@doriyancoleman Great advice. Thanks. I'll look into the 24 2.8. I might even go with the 1.4 if I can justify the extra cost.
❤❤❤
much love!
Well said
i appreciate that!
"size of my gear" lol nice
🤓
Drummer of Knocked Loose at 3:08😂
Why are all yyour photos 27mm
27mm on aps-c is roughly 40-41mm
@@doriyancoleman of course it is i should pay attention more --sorry
@@lindakantes873 all good 😊
Nitpicking here, but actually, 27mm on APSC looks like 27mm on full frame, when cropped in by 1.6x - it doesn't look like 40mm. Only 40mm looks like 40mm - regardless the sensor size behind it. Equivalency is a myth. The only equivalent thing true for both 27mm on APSC and 40mm on 135 format is the angle of view.
yeah definitely nitpicking
40mm on asp-c is closer to 60mm on full frame
this is true
That 2.8 is just not ideal or viable even for most real street photography, specially in low light in my opinion.
But hey, If it works for some people, i guess it can't be that bad.
Hm…Why do I feel like you’re trying to bait people with this?😂
Bro you gotta be Booty cheeks if you can’t use 2.8 in lowlight 😭 just retire and just go play Roblox.
what’s real street photography?
@@doriyancoleman having a 1.4 lens and taking sh** photos obviously.
