    I have a Leica one as well as the Minolta Rokkor version, and they are amazing little lenses. The Rokkor is a little more contrasty with better coatings, but they are about the same sharpness. The Leica is a bit nicer to use, but honestly, both are brilliant.

    The 40 Summi is one of my favorites. Been rockin’ one with a CLE for 3 decades. I love it so much that I have 3.
    From my research it’s a Wetzlar design. While the Minolta version is the same formula, I much prefer the coatings on Summicron than the Rokkor. Especially with B&W.
    Some of my most printed images come from this lens.
    Regards

      I selected the Cron over the Rokkor to go with the CL and CLE I picked up for the same reasons. I was thinking the Rokkor would be a little more sanitized look-wise.

    The 40mm Summicron-C is a Leica made in Germany by Leitz. The Minolta 40mm is a great lens too, manufactured in Japan with different coatings. They are different lenses. It’s not like the Hassleblad XPan/Fujifilm TX-1 which were exactly the same. Think of the Minolta as the Summicron-C’s Japanese cousin.

    It'll seem a bit of a weird person to pass it onto, but i reckon James Popsys, he loves a 40mm lens, and while he doesnt have a leica atm, he has had one/borrowed one on occasion

    Hi Mike,
    Great video!
    Thanks for sharing.
    In the 70’s I used a Minolta CLE and I loved it.
    I now have found in Japan a new old stock 40mm Minolta for CLE ( multi coated vs the Leica version)
    It is an absolute gem with only 90 degrees focusing.
    Perfect with the M11.
    I have many 35’s ( cron non asph, cron asph, lux asph , ) but this little one gave me amazing photos!
    Paired with an M, almost invisible!
    Peace

    This a great little lens Mike. My copy has the original Leica rubber lens shade which helps to control flare. I was recently in the South of France and used this as the only lens on my M2 and I loved it. It is equally effective on my M9 and M10 cameras.

    Nice video and your photos look great. I love this lens also -- I have a Minolta branded version that I got with a Minolta CLE -- but primarily use it on my M9 and my Lumix. Small size can't be beat. Reminds me a lot of the earlier 35mm Summicron v. 4, which is also super compact and produces great results.

    I love that these options exist. There's a few of them. Like the 90/4, for instance. It unlocks robust kit for just a few hundred dollars. After just buying Leica bodies, that can be super helpful!

    Really nice images. 40mm is my favourite focal length for street photography. Those old Leica lenses are amazing. I have a 1970 Summicron 50/f2 (v3) and an Elmar 90/f4 from the 50s. Bargain prices and lovely results, so much depth and character to vintage Leica glass -

    Interesting point it is closer to 35 than a 50. I love my 35 Cron IV for the same reason, so small, and light. just mentally feels effortless. It performs well with a good bokeh. It gets the most use of all my M lenses.

    The 40mm Cron was my entry into the Leica world along with a CL and CLE. It’s such a great lens with its own distinctive look. Still have it paired to a CLE for those days I want something smaller than an M.

  • @thedarkslide
    @thedarkslide 6 месяцев назад +2

    7:09 This is not exactly true from what I understand. The Leica 40mm is actually made in Germany and it was specifically made for the Leica CL, the only Leica M with 40mm frame lines ever. Minolta did not make the Leica branded lenses as far as I know. You should be able to tell from the "made in Germany" label on the Leica lenses. The Minolta branded lenses were made by Minolta, they are made in Japan. These were not made for the CL, but the later CLE which Minolta launched on its own when Leica abandoned the CL as it feared it would cannibalize M5 sales. The 40mm Rokkor is excellent. I would guess that it has better lens coatings than the older 40mm Summicron.

  • @ACatCalledBaudelaire
    @ACatCalledBaudelaire 6 месяцев назад +2

    The only real differences between the Minolta M-Rokkor 40mm and the Summicron-C 40mm are the filter thread sizes and the price. The Leica gets a not-insignificant bump in price.

      When I researched this before at least the v1 of the minolta is just a leica with minolta slapped on it . V2 was the minolta version with different coating.

  • @lensman5762

    I think that the best 40mm that I have is the one on my Olympus RD, the superb F-Zuiko 40mm F1.7 . These guys were designed for the Leica/Minolta CL film cameras as the Ms do not have a frame line for 40mm, you just have to select the 35mm and work inside that frame. The filter sizes are very strange and filters very hard to come by and expensive. The Leica version is more rare than minolta because Leica just pulled the plug on this lens without notice in 1976 after just three years of production.

    40mm is one of my favourite focal lengths for street. Does the M11-P have a gridline matching 40mm? I am using a Voigtlander Bessa R3A which has a 40mm gridline, together with the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f1.4.

    Interesting video
    Very nice lens and interesting project to let the lens travel the world and collect images shot with it.
    Just a tip, with older lenses (vintage) set your camera (in your cases) to 18 or 36 MP.
    They are not performing optimal on high MP sensors
    M10 - 24 would be the better camera for it.
    Never the less, some amazing shots you took with it.
    And again thanks for sharing them !

    I'd love to hear from someone who knows lens design why pancake lenses are often (usually) 40mm or vice versa. Anyone? I'm just curious as to the design elements. Takes fewer pieces of glass to do a good job at that focal length based on RI?

    • @jpm5205
      @jpm5205 6 месяцев назад

      If I had to venture a guess, 40mm is the closest to real life. The lens elements are effectively windows that don't need to bend light as other focal lengths.
