"Sonata in GM Op 49-2 no. 20 mvmt 1" Beethoven played on bassetti accordion by Paul Shigrove
This is a very fitting piece for the beginning of another sunny & cheerful summer season. I'm sure the mercurial composer wrote this on one of his good days. It's a RCM grade 8 level piece & is great for the intermediate to advanced level free-bass accordionist. It was published after the composer's death & should have been numbered with a much earlier opus number. This is a “light” sonata with a delicately playful & happy feel. Some critics think that it was composed for pedagogical use for an illustration of sonata form & they may be right. The exposition contains two related themes followed by a very short development section in the relative minor. The 'recapitulation' brings back the ...

"Carnival of Venice & Bulgarian Folk Dance" dazzling live performance by Oleg Sharov
Просмотров 14621 день назад
Oleg Sharov is another big name in the history of Russian bayan performers. He was born in St Petersburg in 1954 & studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov conservatory where he is now a senior professor. During the Soviet era he performed in concerts mainly in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia & China & it wasn't till Gorbachev's political "perestroika" of the 1990s that he was able to perform in Western Euro...
"Olive Blossoms" - Pietro Frosini plays his own composition (original vintage recording)

While Spring is still in full blossom I thought I'd post a piece that was emblematic of joyful state of nature. And there's no better recording of Olive Blossoms than this one by the maestro Frosini himself. There's a bit of excessive reverb in it but, on the whole, it's a very good recording for the 1930s. You can even hear the click of castanets in some places giving it a Mediterranean Latin ...
"Sonata in Am" (Scarlatti) - landmark recording of accordion legend Mogens Ellegaard

In the western world Mogens Ellegaard has been titled the "father of the classical accordion." As a son of a Danish cabinet maker, he began to study the accordion at the age of eight. From then on he was determined to acquire one of these instruments & the rest was accor...
"Organ Prelude in Dm BWV 539" - performed on bassetti free-bass accordion by Paul Shigrove

I've chosen to slow things down a bit with this meditative piece. The prelude is an example of the sheer beauty of Bach's musical imagination. It is a polyphonic piece with two voices in a modified "rounded binary" form & a work of soulful expressiveness. Notice the tension he creates with dissonant harmonies & how smoothly & effortlessly he resolves them. I thought I would just breeze through ...

I play many of his arrangements. Much respect for him. I have two copies of this very arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue that I play. Rather than pushing only for technical perfection like so many teachers, he was big on teaching correct phrasing, dynamics, and how to play a piece like the composer intended. He was still teaching and playing nearly to when he passed away at 100 years old. Later in life he performed for smaller groups and clubs and ran the yearly accordion camp in Washington state. I attended a couple of his performances when he was in his 90s and his playing was still outstanding. RIP Maestro

Well Paul, you and I have communicated over the last few years (name was @richardplante1229 then, have new handle now) and you seemed dissatisfied with the way you were performing overall. It was like something was missing. Then 5 months ago you played Scarlatti's sonata in d minor and voila... it was like a newer, more confident Paul had just arrived. It made me take notice. And the way you played this piece by Beethoven is spectacular. No hesitation, just a pure flow of confidence with sound. That's real music! I love to grow and I love to see others grow too. Thanks Paul. P.S. I'm enjoying listening to this so much, I've lost count of how many times I've replayed the video.

I heard that the piece was inspired by Musetta's Aria from LaBohene! I don't know if that is true but if you listen to the Aria and than this (slowed down of course) you can see where that idea may have come from.

An interesting observation & could well be correct. La Boheme,...that's Puccini right? Actually, throughout musical history later composers often "quoted" the works of previous composers, some unconsciously & others quite intentionally.

One of my favorite performers of the day. His accordion was a chromatic keyboard but he made it look like a piano accordion keyboard since piano keyboards were the new "thing" and he wanted to make sure he was "fitting in". as it were. I saw one of these about 50 years ago in a California accordion store. I wonder if it might have been one of Pietro's.

He was much more than 'quite a virtuoso for the day'! The fine playing in just this short piece requires a depth of technique, sensitivity to style, and taste, that many accordionists today have not acquired...and I dare say, do not care to acquire. Ellegaard was a great musician playing the accordion. I would make that claim only about a small group of so-called virtuosos today. Ellegaard also remained open to accordion development and adopted the Russian Bayan (in a C system configuration built in the Jupiter shop by Sergei Barinov). Finally, he selflessly pursued and promoted the continued development of original repertory. It will be a long time before his musicianship and contribution to music and the instrument will be surpassed.

I might give it a go again. While some might have both an acoustic accordion and a modern digital accordion as I do.... it might be a fun exercise to use the capabilities of a digital accordion to perform it. The Grand Canyon Suite always intrigued me and I love the "tone poem" and special effects when an orchestra plays it.

Thanks for posting this. He was quite the virtuoso for the day. Some performers of the modern era have gone beyond this but he was one of the first to show what could be done with a free bass accordion. The Russians took it to the next level with their Bayans. As a 76 year old accordionist (also free bass but piano treble keyboard), I am impressed how the accordion design and technology moved so quickly considering it is a relatively very young instrument.

Very enjoyable. Bellow changes are so clever that it sound like an organ. If expressiveness is the key, somewhat less tempo might be applicable, in a way that each new harmony comes as a surprise, like it would have been invented in the moment it is played... that will come automatically when the piece is left alone for a few weeks and then played again. Bravo!

    • @RobertKarlBerta
      @RobertKarlBerta 2 месяца назад

@@accordionland1205 I wouldn't say an accordion is necessarily simpler than an organ. An accordion has something that organs don't.... the bellows. Rather than just an air pump to make a sound, it allows amazing levels of dynamics and musicality much like the bow on a violin or breath control on a wind instrument. Also the volume control on an organ is very crude.... a volume pedal like a car accelerator. A bellows allows instant changes louder and softer... that is something a piano can't do either... it is loudest when first struck and then dies out. I have always said that in the hands of a very good musician the accordion is a very expressive instrument. As far as all the sounds an organ has available, accordions have different reed combinations and the latest digital accordions are much like an organ in that they have hundreds of midi sounds to choose from. Some prefer the traditional accordion, but there is a place for both and that is why I play both acoustic and digital instruments. 😀
