  • Oleg Sharov is another big name in the history of Russian bayan performers.
He was born in St Petersburg in 1954 & studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov conservatory where he is now a senior professor. During the Soviet era he performed in concerts mainly in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia & China & it wasn't till Gorbachev's political "perestroika" of the 1990s that he was able to perform in Western Europe & the USA. Here he's filmed live at a gala 1985 concert in Moscow for outstanding accordion & bayan artists of the Russian Federation. First he plays his own "arrangement of an arrangement" of Frosini's masterwork "The Carnival of Venice" then returns to the stage for an encore performance of the finale of V. Semionov's "Bulgarian Suite." Note that he converts to free-bass for the broken chord variation in the high register.
