Then do it. Balls like these exist and not just rarely. Most people just don't know of their existence. if you really want to, go to a dancing school and learn it there. Especially the respected and more traditional schools often attend or organise their own balls and if not, ask your dance teacher about local or national balls. If you are in the US, it might be a bit harder than in Europe but even there, many balls are being organised and once you are in the scene, you can easily go up to 10 balls a year (if you've got enough free time of course)

In Europe, the tradition is still very alive. In my country (Czechia) most of the high schoolers (some of them opt out, because they find classic dances boring) attend one semester long classic dances courses. You attend such courses as a class and meet there pupils from other schools from your city. Throughout the semester there are about three main balls where also parents are invited.

The class, elegance, and sophistication were truly something else. And the style. You can say what you want about their clothes, but I think they really knew how to dress for such occasions.

Austrian here. We also had a ball during the last year of school. At first, I hated attending the dance classes. It always got so late, at the same time we had to prepare for "Matura" which is the final exam to get a degree. We also had to write a diploma thesis and loosing a whole day per week to attend dance classes was extremely stressful. But when the day came to dance in front of hundreds of people, every exhausting thing was forgotten. It was one of my best experiences I've ever had, and I can't describe how glad I was to attend the ball. I hope that this tradition will never die ❤

Actually, it was the 19th century (before that, there was no waltz), and dancing wasn't quite as formal in Vienna - people held on to each other pretty tightly. Add to that the prominence of VERY low-cut dresses in the fashion of the time, and you get an idea of why it was considered so scandalous. ;)

As a classical musician who's not from Vienna, I've always been somewhat detached when playing waltzes - as though my interpretation was lacking even though I knew it was a dance. It's only now by seeing how the dancers twirl around and the skirts swish about and the gracefulness of their steps did I fully understand how waltzes really are..so thank you very much for this. It was an eye opener and a learning experience.

Here in Austria (where I live at least) it's basically a rule for any 15/16 year old girl and boy to attend a dancing school where you learn to dance things like many versions of waltz and also many more different classical dances. When you went there for a few months and the ball season starts. Every boy and girl searches for a dance partner with whom he or she continues dancing together and sign up for ball "eröffnungen" (the first dance, like the one in the video), where they learn the choreography together with all other "couples", til they day of the ball they trained for.
I loved my time at the balls as a teenager, it was always so romantic. I had my first kiss on one and me and my girlfriend had the best time dancing together in super fancy clothes with gloves and sometimes she even got to wore a little crystal crown.

As a 20 year old, I know I am in the minority of my age bracket when I say this...But here goes. There is no form of dancing that is more romantic and more appealing than the Viennese waltz. After going to a salute to Vienna concert in Vancouver where they had ballroom dancers dancing to Strauss Waltzes and Polkas, I was captivated by every move and close embrace. The way the pairs move together are simply beautiful, and the formal wear they are required to wear is elegant and classy. I would rather watch one Viennese waltz rather than 10,000 videos of modern “dancing” which I think is spit in the face of true beautiful dancing like this. May the Viennese waltz live long and be celebrated for many centuries to come!

People like you are so annoying. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you get to take a giant dump on it. Modern dance styles are just as good as the classics. They are just a different form of expression in dance. There is absolutely no reason to bash it. All you had to say was that you like more classic styles of dance. All this pretentious BS doesn't make you seem refined or cultured. It just makes you look daft. If you actually enjoyed dancing as an artform you'd recognize that all forms of dance should be celebrated and that they require a lot of skill to be executed well.

as a dancer. i have to agree that it is one of the most romantic styles of dances. but please dont be so rude about other dance styles. There is no true dancing. That is a concept that has come out of centuries of slavery and imperialism. Just like waltz, every style also has history and story behind it. Many modern dance forms have a foothold in empowerment and taking back power and a way of expression as a lot originated in minority communities where such styles end up being one of the few ways to express yourself. Coming from a purely dancers perspective, doing various styles really allows different emotions to come out when it is your way of self expression. So please, while you are entitled to your opinion, try not to drag other styles to make yours seem better. Have a great day!

There are always alternates for each dance in case something goes wrong. Sometimes they are needed to dance (it happens more often than you may think), and sometimes if everyone stays healthy, they have to sit out as you observed. But the opening committee also dances a polka, and the alternate couples for the waltz always get a chance to perform the polka (and vice versa).

I'm imagining the most intense moment between our two main characters, and how Waltz was the most intimate dance of the regency HRs.
How they felt the most of the tension unrivalling between their bodies, the gentle swish of her gown against his breeches, the subtle brush of her bosom against his chest when they spinned, their hands clasped, feet moving in harmony while staring intensely into each other's eyes, his hands firmly gripping her waist. Indulged in one of the finest conversation while they fall slowly for each other.
It seems like in every HR I've read, if the heroine is trying to evade the hero, or they both are avoiding it for some reasons, the luck would have it that they both would get waltz as their first dance. Because it involves the most physical touch according to books. How romantic. Sighs.

@@makatsue4598Well, these people are definitely not wearing regency dress lol. And the waltz wasn’t actually popular during the regency period. It didn’t become popular until later in the 19th century.
But regency dances were still very physical! You definitely would have been working up a sweat if you were dancing all night!
